Hi,
i am from Germany, and i was wondering whether it's more expensive if i'm surfing with hsdpa, because the icon at the top of the home screen is always changing its letters...
If i have an internet flat, does it matter which kind of symbol is shown at the top?
Sometimes some apps cannot transfer data, especially when i'm going by train - is that normal?
I recently read about the fact that people are able to switch their data transfer mode between 2g, 3g, g manually by adjusting some settings.
Where do i find those settings in my galaxy gt?
with kind regards...
anXy

Hi all,
I don't get to spend much time with my device or surfing the net for handy little apps so I am forced to ask this probably simple/stupid question to you people in the know.
Is there a way to configure my Vodafone UK v1615 to dynamically swap between "My Work" and "My ISP" network settings so that when I leave my wireless network the device automatically knows to dial up a 3G/HSDPA connection and use that if I open something like IE?
Or should I be configuring this somewhere else, like in the applications themselves (i.e. If WiFi unavailable use 3G)?
If anyone knows of a nice (idiot proof) guide to setting up the connections on a WM6 device that'd do to save you having to type out your own long winded instructions.
Thanks in advance for all the help offered.

Hi Macca,
I've not found a way to do this yet on mine, it is something I think WM6 lacks compared to Symbian. I still find it pretty simple just to hit the Fn key and then OK on the QWERTY keyboard as this switches WiFi on and off.
Something I found useful on the subject of data is the counter software you'll find on the TomTom CD that came with the phone. It gives you daily data usage, really handy for keeping check!
Have a nice evening,

Hi Ed,
thanks for the tip on turning the WiFi on and off, that'll save some time!
However, if I turn WiFi off and continue trying to surf, instead of my device making a 3G data connection it just gives me a "Cannot Connect" error, check your connection settings blah blah.
I'm sure this means I've just got my device configured incorrectly because I cant believe such simple functionality isn't available... (what am I say? This is MS we're talking about!)
Can anyone shed some light on how much configuration should be to allow my phone to switch from WiFi to 3G with out reconfiguration?
Many thanks

I seem to be having the opposite of this problem. My device seems to keep connecting to a 3G network by itself whilst it is already connected to a Wi-fi network. it is getting on my nerves now. I am looking for a way to stop the 3g from coming on at all, or at least ask me before connecting to 3g.
I dont get much data in my monthly plan from vodafone and dont want it getting chewed up whilst i am sitting at home with a wi-fi connection.
Bump.
Can anyone help me with this connection confusion?
Many thanks

Hi,
I would also like to be able to connect to my preferred network everytime I turn on the wireless rather than having to configure it everytime. Additionally, even when I am connected and because the signal is poor, it keeps disconnecting, which requires manual connection all the time. In my laptop, although the signal is poor, it never disconnects, it just grinds it out, and keeps working. Or, my expectations are very high for this phone. Can anyone help?
Thanks from a noob.
Hi, ocassionaly I can see that the Edge icon on my Diamond turns grey (it's shadowed) - never seen this state before, anyone know what it means?
I also have been getting that. I dont think it matters if it's EDGE, GPRS, 3G, or HSDA as I have been getting it with 3G after a soft rest
when I put a 3 SIM card in.. in place of the H icon I get an icon that looks like a mountain... triangle.. what's that mean? any ideas?

Triangle means roaming - so beware the costs!
When it's grey, means that it's not "Attached"...
Bye
I kept getting a "Grey" H icon and I actually found that I couldnt connect to the Internet. Also some of my texts wouldnt send and I couldnt make calls either (not sure if its related or not)
The only way I found to solve it was to switch HSDPA off, now I get the 3G symbol but its not "Grey" anymore and everythings working fine.
this is issue is also reffered as "black icons issue". have a search over this forum and you will find many reports of the same.
No, that's not true. This is completely different issue.
Also it's not true that the gray icon denotes unattached GPRS. For unattached GPRS, there is no extra icon, you just see the aerial icon instead of small letter inside the "signal strength" icon.
The grey state is weird, never experienced before on any device, and it's not explained anywhere so far.
I couldn't find it right now (though I'll still search it), but I've changed a setting yesterday and after this, the "grey" icons appeared. Untill then I had the "filled"/normal ones. That setting is for telling if the data connection is ALWAYS available or only BY REQUEST/ON DEMAND (from an application that needs it).
As soon as I'll find it again, I'll post it here.
i disabled the GPRS auto attach and the grey 3g icon started to appear...no longer the filled one...
I have the same problem since yesterday with edge on my workplace: big grey "E" icon, and it's impossible to connect to the net. But I have 2 or 3 network bars and a little "E" in the top left of them. At home I have HSDPA and no problem
i have a grey 3g icon... only came on after i disabled the GPRS auto attach function in advanced config...
I had disabled that function too. I've just re-enabled it and soft reset but I see no difference, it can't connect in edge

I had an isue a long time ago.
When I disabled/detached my GPRS, it was detached from my provider, ie it was detached on the mobile central.
Only way I could get it working again was to call my mobile provider to have them enable it again.
Yeah but it works on 3G and HSDPA, it's not the same parameters?

This is correct. Grey means Gprs/Edge/3G/Hspda is available, but not necessarily attached. When you connect (fire up a browser/mail/any other internet proggie) it will go black (and a lot bigger and uglier I might add). It's a bit confusing cos when you disconnect, it STAYS black, which is probably a bug.
hi
I just got the diamond, my first htc phone my free internet browsing comes on in a couple of weeks but till then just wanted to have a quick browse, just wondered once ive closed the web page down does that mean its automatically disconnected from the net or do i have to manually turn it off, i dont want to get a huge bill from surfing the net the whole time when i think im not connected
thanks
The icon that displays the signal strength tells you whether you are connected or not. If it has an antenna icon, you are not connected. Any other icon (such as a "H", "E" or "3G") on the signal strength icon (notice how the antenna is above the strength) means you are connected. There are options to automatically disconnect after a while, I use this.
ok thanks for that mine says 3g at the top so how do i remove that to disconnect?
many thanks
ok had a look through the manual and what i think the icon (3g) i have is showing that it is available there are no signal strenths below it and according to the manual this is what shows im connected or two arrows if its connecting does that sound right?
thanks
A silly question by a new user: how is it possible to stop an internet or data connection (no matter if hsdpa, edge, gprs) once started?
Thanks
use 'long key press' in settings, can be set to disconnect a data connection (sdpa, edge, gprs)
Use this program:

The connection stop after 1 minutes of inactivity

faulty url!
take this one:
GB-SOFT GPRS-UMTS_Tweak_WM6.1_Diamond
there you can choose the idle-time for disconnect
Anyway the manual stopping mode is to tap the bar that is on the top of the sceen...than tap the G E 3G or U icon and so you can tap disconnect.

Cool, also in stead of holding the end call button, wich locks the phone in my case,
Dubbelclicking the end call button alse ends my edge connection.
In order for your end key to stop the connection, you have to go to Settings>System>Long Press End Key>Select Terminate data connection
Then when you press and hold your end key, it will end the connection
if you prefer to stop internetconnection by shortcut, try VJKeyPress.exe 126
this one toggles internet connection
i've searched and i've searched and i cant find the resolve!
after retrieving hotmail, the connection stays active, meaning bars are lit up. for HOURS after unless i long-press-end key or something like that. even when i am surfing the web, after a page is fully loaded, the bars stay lit. on my old diamond, the bars used to go gray or "dormant" etc. therefore no tweaks i have found help (i.e. most operate with this rule "if the connection is dormant/inactive for xx minutes, turn off data" etc. well my connection remains ACTIVE unless i manually intervene)
what is causing this??? i only have spb mobile shell and spb phone suite installed. stock ROM.
hello? anyone? NO one is having the same issue or can help with this??? at this point i'd even be happy with a rude comment about how i should learn how to search coupled with a few links to threads which contain the answers! :\
I'm not sure I understand your question.
You're saying the connection stays alive after using mail or opera?
By default, WMo does not turn off data connection, so once you've made a data connection, it stays on.
Now, there are lots of programs out there that turns off data connection after a pre-set time. If you have Advanced Config on your Diamond, it's somewhere in there as well (I use SKTools and not Advacned Config so I can't point you exactly where, but it's there)
That said, many have tested battery drain and find that leaving the data connection ON or OFF makes absolutely no difference on the battery drain. It's only when you're transmitting data that drains more battery. Not sure if that's where you're coming from to want to turn off data connection

number16, my savior! i'll try to explain as best i can: when the data connection is started/being used, those left-right arrows appear above the signal strength, correct? what i call "active" is when those arrows are lit (presumably when data is actually being transferred). what i call "dormant" is when the arrows are still there but are gray/not lit (i.e. connection is still open, but not currently transferring data). well, up until a 2 wks ago, all seemed fine - the arrows would briefly stay lit when downloading a page, connecting to hotmail, etc, but then would go gray once the transfer was complete. now however, the arrows stay lit. sometimes for hours at a time even tho nothing is running, no data (that i know of) is being transferred, etc.
so what i was saying is that, yes, i know i can long-press-end key to shut it down, but that only works if i notice it otherwise it's just draining my battery. (most times it is in my pocket, and since it checks hotmail periodically, the data connection may open and stay on without me noticing). and yes, i know about advanced config setting (and actually, i DO have it set to turn off after a minute) BUT that only applies if "connection is not active for more than a minute". i.e. since my whole problem is that my data connection technically stays active, that advanced config setting doesnt work.
so my question is, what is keeping the connection active? why is it doing this? i am running stock ROM and only have spb mobile shell and spb phone suite loaded. and a few other minor tweaks via advanced config/regedit. i even tried spb wireless monitor to see what was active after a data transfer was complete (as far as i could tell) but it didnt really tell me anything.
does all that make sense?
thanks for any help you can provide...
I'm having the strangest problem with my O2X on T-Mobile UK. When I'm using a 2g connection all works as it should. But when im in a 3g area I get the little H with the up and down arrows below it in the top bar, and the little arrows randomly flicker on and off. The strange thing is that it seems that no data gets transferred. I can't browse the Internet or use any apps that require a connection. I've tried deleting all apn's and adding ones that I know to be correct (it works with a 2g connnection after all) and I've even tried changing roms, but nothing works! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Edit: it seems that the problem wasn't with my phone at all, it's actually the cell tower that I was connected to that has a fault. Now I feel silly, lol.
