Apps backup

So, I thought I backed everything up when switching from 1.5 to 2.1 leak. Then I realized that the apps I had paid for while running 1.5 were "lost". I put that in quotes because maybe Im not looking in the right place. If I go from the 2.1 leak to the 2.1 OTA rom from HTC, will I be losing my paid apps? Is there a way to backup and reinstall these apps on the OTA 2.1 rom? Thanks for the help.

If you are rooted u can use titanium backup, but it doesn't sound like you are...

I'm not rooted. When I installed the 2.1 leak I backed up every folder on my phone before install. When I went into the folders to transfer the apps and games I had on 1.5 I couldn't find any of the things I had backed up. Also, certain apps like Bank of America and Lookout no longer let me log in. Any ideas on what I did wrong?

If I'm not mistaken, the only security on the market is that the apps are not accessable to non-root users. Since you were unrooted, you couldn't have copied them.

Hmmm... didn't think about that. (Still a NooB ) So, if I were to update from 2.1 leak to 2.1 OTA, would I lose the apps that I have paid/registered for or is there a way to backup or reinstall them on the new 2.1? Thanks again.

[Q] Titanium backup not working after Froyo update

Updated my phone to the 2.2 JPM firmware successfully and then applied the root using the CF-Root v1.2 method. Everything working fine so far I applied the new Voodoo-5-pre6-Froyo fix and phone rebooted fine. Now I go to install Titanium backup and it requests root privileges which I confirm but it still says it cannot attain superuser privileges when attemping to run Titanium.
Anyone know what's up? I wouldn't mind getting my old apps back

Simply restart Titanium, happens to me all the time. Once restarted, it should work normally.
However, generally if you have come from a non-froyo ROM, it is recomended that you do not use Titanium to backup, due to the 2.1 system data causing a force closes.

Thanks so much. I kept hesistating whether I wanted to try one of the froyo roms since it was taking FOREVER to get the official version and I was tired of waiting around.

I want to flash my galaxy with Froyo (still have 2.1). Therefore I would like to backup my firmware first if something goes wrong so I can re-do everything. Since you said that backing up a non-froyo with titanium is not recommended, which one would you recommend? Do you know any posted thread which could help me in this?

Unrooting my captivate to get AT&T 2.2?

I rooted my phone (I think) using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (I think). Looking at the phone with SUPER MANAGER the ENABLE ROOT function is NOT checked off. Does that mean my phone is not rooted? Is there another way of telling if my phone is rooted? I read somewhere that you need an unrooted phone in order to get the AT&T froyo 2.2 which hopefully will be released any day now. If I need the phone unrooted to get the update is there an easy way to unroot it that will not wipe out my programs and data?

that exe you are referring to is stock 2.1... there is nothing rooted about it

Ummmmm did you or didn't you run that program while in download mode? If you are unsure about that then I suggest you stop trying to mod your phone for a while and do some reading.
As far as being unrooted, no one knows. But I can tell you I plain don't care about an official release from att. I will continue to use roms that are developed by folks around here. they are better than anything that att can put out.

Pirate, I have been a member here for a long time, & been doing a lot of reading since I got this phone. I have never seen so many people get bricked and that scares me. I tried to root the phone just in order to make backups....I am a backup freek and for good reason. My last phone was the DASH 3G (still have it). I got the HTC Windows phone but only kept it a couple of weeks before realizing how far it has to go. The Captivate is definitely a lot better than anything i have ever had and it does not seem necessary to flash it in order to get all the nice apps running. I will be happy with the AT&T update if it ever appears. I have spent the past few weeks customizing the Captivate and will post my homescreen and a list of apps I am using.

Do you have the SuperUser App in your APP drawer? If so you are rooted.

I have SUPERUSER PERMISSIONS.....some of the apps listed inside it are:
titanium backup
rom manager
root explorer
sqlite editor
one click lag fix (I dont think that one worked)
So do I need to UNROOT in order to get the AT&T update to 2.2?

Just odin one click and master clear.. then hook up to kies...

first of all, 2.2 is not coming soon....
second of all, you ARE rooted
third of all, doesn't matter if you "unroot" (although you dont really seem to be a candidate for rooting anyway)...because once you're rooted or once you change the existing software (which you did with the program you listed in the first post between the "i thinks"), you negate the ability to recieve over-the-air updates from at&t
not that ANY of this matters, because the second those firmwares hit at&t phones it will be here and available to flash
not to mention we already have 2.2 available unrooted (the leaked version (might be different))
if you want me to send you the one-click ODIN file to flash stock 2.2 let me know

So it's a confirmed fact that rooted phones can't get the OTA updates?

nope only that some people have reports that they have not been able to update after they try and use atts update....

1. Does my home screen get reset?
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2

Not necessarily true - for Apps/Data you should be fine restoring. But I wouldn't recommend restoring any type of System Data as it would conflict with the update.

As in? Froyo specs means you will have additional functionality - the biggest one is Flash for websites. That and you will be able to run more applications from the Market vs. your current Eclair 2.1 ROM.

Thanks for the response. I have titanium backup, as well as SUPER MANAGER which also does backups. Also have ROm MANAGER but I am sure that will not apply....As for my installed apps & widgets I have a list of everything installed. Looking forward to 2.2 and FLASH 10 WHITESOX!

The official Froyo update has been coming "any day now" since September.

Just personal preference to run Titanium Backup - I know it works and I can use the free version to do everything I want or need.
Yea - I had forecasted we would see the Froyo OTA update from ATT with Source before Christmas - It does appear we won't see this update until sometime in 2011 - like um never?
At this point your stuck with either the OTA JH7 Update 2.1 Eclair - or you can get the Leaked Froyo (not recommended stock) or your plethora of Custom ROM's in the Dev forum.
I swear I think the Captivate has more custom roms then a room full of bunnies. I look at the other Galaxy S line and I see a few - but not as many to choose from here. This is the one major plus of owning a Captivate I guess

which one to get?

Backup before a ROM Update

Sorry but I'm really newb on this.
I have done the update from 2.2 to 2.2.1 with Kies, the first day I had my Galaxy. Now I'm waiting official Gingerbread to update, always with Kies, because my Galaxy does not have the "3 keys combo".
I have now many apps installed, and many files I need, both into internal and external SD. When I will update to Gingerbread, what I will lose ?
Is there a way to backup all installed Apps, and reload them after the update ?

if you flash officially through kies, then all your apps should get backed up and restored,
if you are going to flash using odin or similar software, you will lose your apps, so you should use a tool like titanium backup (requires root)

Yes I can only use KIES, no other way !!
So, it does save and restore automatically ? Or I should set this thing in some option ?

i'm pretty sure the same thing applies from Eclair to Froyo via Kies, which is what i did with my i9000m. it changed it from 2.1 to 2.2 as above, automatically and none of my settings or apps were affected at all, including apps i had paid for.
it only reset the home pages - the shortcuts on those pages by default (all my ringtones/notifications/wallpaper etc remained the same).

[Q] Upgrade to Gingerbread - what happens to apps and user data?

been reading with interest this forum and was very pleased when Kies finally told me there is an update to my UK unbranded Tab's firmware (didn't want to go down the DIY update route...)
Just have a couple of questions about it though, which I am hoping someone may be able to answer: so here goes:
- what happens to user data (settings mostly, as photos/music/etc are backed up anyway)
- what happens to installed apps? Will these be automatically re-installed as part of the update process?
- what about rooting under 2.3? I am using the excellent z4root to get temporary root privileges so I can run my backups with Titanium (which I guess is the answer to the first two questions) - will z4root work in 2.3? If not, any equivalents so I can restore with Titanium and not worry all settings/data will be lost?

Note I would like to go the "normal" (Kies) way of updating...

1. Home screen settings are not saved.
2. Apps are retained
3. You lose root and only way so far to root is CF root

There is a one click root that will work on stock gb too. It's not perfect, and you really have to read the instructions, but it works, and remember to donate.
Advice for restoring apps with titanium - be sure to restore apps, but no data, as this is the cause of so many problems on upgrades.

If you are talking about super one click root the latest kies update cannot be rooted as the exploit had been patched/closed.
I am also interested in other rooting method.

With Titanium backup you can backup applications.Contacts you can backup with gmail and you can even backup sms with the application ' restore and backup sms '

Be careful with titanium backup when restoring data FROM OLD FIRMWARE. Restore only the app on a new firmware to avoid problems.

Make sure the back up folder is on your external sd card, or your back up will get wiped when you repartition.

The apps will re-install anyway as I understand it, providing one gives the same gmail account to the device after the update, since they will appear in "my apps" on the market?
My current firmware is FROYO.XWJJ7? (whee can I find the CDA, PHONE etc?)

The rest of the firmware info is on Kies, on the general tab. But it looks like you're on a different build to me... My build is JMI. I'll just have to wait, maybe...

Gingerbread can be rooted. After you install your gingerbread rom, you flash a kernel into the rom that has the root.
In the development section look for CF-Root v3.3. You flash that kernel using odin3 1.7 in the phone section. It takes ten seconds, the the tab reboots, and is rooted.
Then set up your google account, go to the market, get titanuim and install it, and in titanium change the backup folder to your external sd card, and restore your stuff.
Go for it!

The version of your phone (=modem) you will find in settings -> about device, under "Baseband version".
The CSC-version can be found if you enter *#272*YOURIMEI# in the phone-app. Your IMEI can be found in settings -> about device -> status under "IMEI".
Have fun with Gingerbread.

the1madsailor talks about updating via Kies. He specifically mentions this in the first post, too.
Odin was just brought up when the question of rooting by installing CF-Root arose.
By the way: in Odin kernels need to be inserted under "PDA", not "PHONE". "PHONE" is just for the modem.

Been reading about CF-Root and how to get back to the stock ROM after rooting for a Galaxy S II which recently landed on my hands, which I assume is the same (if not identical) process for the Tab?
Not taken the plunge yet with the Tab as I'm dreading having to re-do all the customisation of all the apps, settings etc...
Out of curiosity, what's Samsung's liability if a "proper" upgrade goes south and one looses all data? Given Kies is not backing up anything worth backing up, surely they (Samsung) have some share of the blame?
Might just go for it in the end and hope for the best (the proper upgrade). From the GSII I can confirm all *paid* apps appear in my account, the free ones need to be manually located and re-installed.

You can upgrade to the stock gingerbread (I recommend the JQ1 GB) then root using the CF-Root v3.3.
I don't know about the sgs2 process, but if you go to the overcome rom thread, you can download a perfect step-by-step guide. Start at the beginning of the guide, and stop at the end of the CF-Root step. Why put it off? Gingerbread is a hundred times nicer than froyo.
Go to the market and get the appsaver app, and back up everett app you are concerned about.
I will be free all day tomorrow. Pm me, then we can exchange email adresses. It is a faster way to discuss things if you get in trouble. I have calouses on my hands from holding many hands of people as they learn to do these things.

I will not be able to do much before the weekend anyway, but what I was thinking is the following (please correct me if I'm wrong):
0. Backup apps, data and market links (where available) with Titanium (using z4root at the mo - wish there was something like it for 2.3 - so simple and easily reversible!!!) - DONE!
1. Let Kies do it's thing (whether that's just an update to 2.2 or the whole thing through to 2.3), making note of all versions (PHONE, PDA, CSC)
2. If I get the 2.3, get ODIN and CF-Root 3.3 and run the rooting process
2(a). Get the Overcome ROM and follow the instructions (not sure about this as it doesn't seem to have the modem included so not sure what that means)
2(b). If I do 2(a) above, get a copy of my stock ROM from somewhere for reverting to stock if needed
3. Get Titanium installed again from the market and restore everything (apps, data and market links) from the backup folder
What I really want is to upgrade to Gingerbread through the "official" channels but be able to restore everything as it is at the moment with regards to the apps and their settings/data. The Overcome idea is simply because I wouldn't mind having a slightly improved version of Gingerbread with things like Ad-hoc WiFi capabilities (am I right in understanding that OC has this embedded instead of me having to copy the wpa_supplicant file?)
Am I missing something?
