Backing up Contacts app - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In my last few ROM updates I had problems with my contacts. I would export them menu>import/export>export to SD card, and then import them. However the contacts then would be all screwed up. Choosing a contact would bring up an entirely different contact. Moreover I found that I couldn't even correct it by hand. Even if I'd manually change the name and number, it would still decide to show me a completely different contact than the one I had chosen. SYncing with google seemed to make the process even more confusing.
So the last ROM update, I ended up starting from scratch and typing in all my contacts manually.
Before flashing another ROM I'd like to know if backing up the actual Contacts app (w/data) in Titanium would save all of my phone contact information.

I don't believe it does. I keep my contacts backed up in my google account. Every ROM I install syncs with my google account automatically and pulls my contacts to my phone

Titanium backup does backup contacts.
Just remember to backup "CONTACTS STORAGE" not "CONTACTS".
All contacts info is stored in contacts storage.

I am not sure of that. But contacts storage does restore contacts and favorites.
I am not sure of SMS groups. Maybe u should see for some file related to messaging app, or for sms storage.
Edit:
I just checked through TiBu. There are two entries:
1. [sms/MMS PREFS] Messaging 2.2.1 and
2. OMACP 1.0
Create a test group, backing these up, then delete one of ur groups, and try restoring back to see if these are the files that need to be backed up.
Please post ur outcome of we can all know if that works.

[Q] Best way to restore sms and contacts after flash?

Hey guys whats the best way or is there a way to restore all your contacts and text messages after rom flash. After every flash I have to redo all my contacts with photos and lose all texts, I use titanium back up for the apps but they say not to restore system data with tibu. thanks
The green system settings should be ok to restore, [sms/mms/apn] dialer storage will have your texts,.and contact storage will have your contacts.
Just restore those individually. Works for me.
i keep all my contacts in google so i never have to restore those, and for sms/mms/call log backup and restores i use
sms backup +

I use My Backup Root. When you back up Data (not apk data), you are given a choice of what you want to back up. When you restore data, you are also given a choice of what to restore.
When you restore APK+ Data, you are restoring data from the apks, not system data (with My Backup, TiBu may be different).
The only downside to my backup is most roms don't preload it like tibu. You gave to download from market after every flash.
If this has been any help, please don't forget to hit Thank You.

if you copy the apk somewhere and put it in /data/app in the rom zip before you flash you won't have to download it from the market. Fyi
Interesting, anyways i just used Ti-Backup to reload my text messages
I backed up:
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.2.1
And have none of my text messages on the new ROM. Granted it's nice to clear out, I had some things I wanted to keep
Should I have backed up:
[SMS/MMS PREFS] Messaging 2.2.1
Instead for future reference and purposes?

Have you rebooted since restoring that data? If not, do it.
Android Manager for me. No Google cloud needed. Also, you can export your contacts to a .vcf file before you flash and restore from it after. Do this within the Contacts app.
Yeah... the rebooting thing. My ignorance, and my apologies. All texts are back now

It backs up your home screen, minus widgets. But I think it only works on touchwiz launchers.
And you can back up almost everything, contacts sms, apps, etc.for a detailed list, look on the market page.
If I'm wrong, those with more knowledge please clarify.

[Q] can't restore contact from titanium backup

HI there
i recently restored my phone after flashing a different rom. everything went well and i restored almost everything using titanium backup. i clicked for "install missing apps and data" but unfortunately i could not restore my phone contacts. my contacts are also not synced with gmail. please help?
Did you click on the button in the top middle to bring up the list of programs, and restore contacts then reboot?(assuming you backed it up of course). Cause all it sounds like you did was that batch restore of MISSING apps. The contacts.apk was included so it didn't get restored.
i'm curious about this too. I dont need to restore my contacts but I've installed custom roms for a few friends who didnt have their contacts sync'd with gmail and after restoring what I thought was the contacts, it didnt actually restore.
so I've had this problem before, too. I'm curious to hear from someone who successfully restored phone contacts from TiBu.
Always sync your contacts with Google
I never used TiBu for contacts or calendar entries.

Not sure if this thread is dead or not but I just flashed my brother's phone and used TiBu to restore missing apps + data. For contacts I tried restoring [Contacts/Calls] Storage 2.2, rebooted and still nothing. I dont know what else can I do now. Is there any way I can pull the information out manually from TiBu backup files? I opened com.android.providers.contacts-20110625-144656.tar.gz and noticed the raw data is in the files. Any ideas would be helpful....
Thanks!

Did he sync contacts with his Google account? If so sign into Gmail from the phone and sync. I use the Backup with Gmail from the market to backup calls and texts too. All of my call history, contacts, and texts are synching with my Gmail, works great.

Restart the phone after restoring apps and system data.
When it comes to backing up my contact list I'm Old School. I still do it the same way I did on my Palm OS device. Export to a vCard file (*.vcf). Since android still has that feature I occasionally make a backup of my contacts as a *.vcf and copy it to my SD card, PC or dropbox. However, after reading this post I gave it a try and successfully restored my contacts, txt messages, call logs etc with TiBu. After a restore (I was able to confirm that the 'Restore missing apps + all system data' batch restore will restore your contacts etc. However they don't show in your contact list after a restore. You can try to force close the Contacts and Contact storage from the 'Manage Applications' -> 'Running' screen, and when you restart your contacts after that they should appear. However tried and true method is the simplest.
=> Do a Re-boot.
I tried it successfully four times and doing a restart of the phone worked the best, smoothest and easiest. Then all my contacts were successfully restored.
I performed this on a I897 running FireFly 3.0.2.2 (Froyo based ROM) I used the latest version of TiBu 3.9.0.1 free version and made sure that busybox was updated to 1.18.4
If you're worried about TiBu not working, exporting your contacts to a *.vcf file does give you a nice file that you can then import natively into Android and most other mobile OS. (I've personally verified that *.vcf works on Pantech and Lg messaging phones, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Thunderbird, Outlook)

Yea, don't use TiBU to restore any system apps like contacts or messaging ESPECIALLY when changing roms/android os versions.
I would recommend backing up ur contacts to your google account. Also, see if u can find a .vcf file in your TiBU backup

[Q] Contacts wiped after flashing, help?

Hi guys,
After flashing Slick2x-G, all my contacts are gone. I did a full wipe since it's neccesary, but after turning my phone back on all my phone numbers are gone.
I remember that when I saved a new contact I always chose LG PC Suite in the options. Is there any way to get them from somewhere?
Thanks!

If you backed them up before a wipe then yes.Else no
I did a clockworkmod backup and i did a backup with titanium backup, but no idea IF they saved it and if they did, where the files are.
Could you explain me?
The ClockworkMod backup wont help, but look for Contacts in Titanium.
I tried, but in the new rom I'm using right now is no titanium, where can I find the backups?
Should be in /sdcard/TitaniumBackup

You can do another thing.Full Wipe the phone restore the clockworkmod backup.Reboot phone.Open contacts.Press the options "hard key".Select more.then select Import/export.Export to sdcard.Wait for it to finish. It will save all your contacts in the sdcard. Then boot to recovery.Full wipe again.Flash the desired Rom.After that reboot phone.Open contacts...Select import/export from options...Import from sdcard.Select the file.Wait for it to finish. You will have all the contacts.A little long process but the best.
Thanks for the explaination, I'm going to try it tomorrow or so. I guess it will work! Thanks!

If you did a Titanium backup you just have to re-install Titanium and restore your contact app + data. it's what I do for Go contact. If your contacts were set as google contact they should be back automatically with sync.
Edit: doesn't work I looked at my contacts and only the google one are restored. You must use the built-in save feature in your contact app our use a specific backup app.

Yes, at some point I would recommend changing all your contacts from LG to Gmail contacts. Not only is it far easier to sync, it helps prevent issues that arise from apps that also use your contacts list, and it allows you to easily sync contacts onto any future Android phone.
I changed back to my backup since i couldn't get my contacts back. Is there any way to make Google contacts of all or do i have to do it one by one? Thanks!
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
very easily yes
in the contacts application, select menu, select export to SD, then select all contacts and these will be saved as a vcf file on the SD memory
then go back to the contacts application again, select menu, then select import from SD - it will ask where you want to import to, select import to Google contacts and it will be imported and synched to your google account.
After that you can delete all the phone contacts and just leave the google contacts - easiest way to do this is turn off view of google contacts first, it will then only show phone contacts, select all and delete them and finally turn on google contacts view again.
When i select export tot sd, it only exports like 21 of my contacts, which are my whatsapp contacts. Can't find any options to change that?

No idea what I did, but after changing some settings i fixed it! Everyone thanks for help!

If you have Titanium Backup Pro....think you can extract from the Nand backup...I would suggest you to try MyPhone Explorer where you can backup your apps, messages and contacts+files to the computer easily via wi-fi, USB, BT as well.
Hope this helps.

I know I have the pro version and have restored the app from it and it's still not there.
I think I backed up settings and not the actual messages.

yes it did not work. On the stock rom there was a app that backed up I think messages, contacts, calander etc. Do you know what it was? Maybe I could use that to get them back?

I am not sure if I used it.I agree there was something which used the battery and drained it fast....think the devs removed it as we can use the TB for almost all things....
My sim contacts don't show up in cm also.
Titanium doesn't save sms, at least for Go, I've never had them restored except for private box. The only way is to save them from within Go. Try Appextractor that can retrieve sms from nandroid.

Open the Contacts and I remember there is something to be selected, to show the SIM+Phone contacts....if not, only the phone contacts are only shown. Check the CM thread...you will get some answer there....
BTW perhaps Go just read sms in stock sms app that's why they are not saved by titanium. Try to restore stock sms app's data.
If you backed up the sms you will find them in GOSMS/backup just take the latest backup and paste it into /sdcard/GOSMS/backup/SmsRestore and then from GO SMS app restore the msges.
Hello!
For backup of your SMS, calendar and contacts use MyPhoneExplorer – as already stated - it is free and will backup those including all SMS.
Titanium backup is good for your apps – but since you contact/sms/calendar app has changed it with the update to CM7 – Titanium won’t help you cause it only restores data for specific apps – and if they aren’t there it doesn’t restore the data for them.
As for the contacts from SIM - did you do import from SIM?

Yes I have and it says "No contacts on your SIM card." I have tried my sim card in another phone and there is contacts.
I have tried AppExtractor and it restored contacts!! They still not showing from sim though
Hello!
I don't use contacts from SIM since my old Nokia 3210-days - so I don't know any other methods...sorry...
You could try to bluetooth the contact using your other phone - if it is able to or try to export some other format (i.e. vcal).
I used Thunderbird with plugin for vcal to import my old contacts from my SE P1i.
Me too, I use only google sync.
Ok. Thank you for all your help.
I have got them back using AppExtractor. On the stock rom contacts there was a option to import facebook contacts. Is it possible in cm?
Hello!
I don't use facebook - so I will guess...
I am pretty sure it should be automatic if set it up in...
setting > accounts & sync
...if you have installed the facebook app - that is - of course...
When you set it up to sync with calendar/contacts it should do so automatically - at least this is the way it does with my MS Exchange and WhatsApp account.

Can't restore backup done with Huawei Backup

Hi guys!
I have a big problem with my backup. I created it in Huawei Backup app and save it in SD card. Now i can't restore messages, call log and even contacts. Password that I'm inputing is correct, because once I tried to input wrong password I get notification about it. Restoring photos, pictures and videos is working properly, but if it comes to contacts or messages it says there is only one contact and one message, but before wiping data I had over 600 contacts and thousands of messages.
What is interesting, size of file named "sms" in HuaweiBackup folder is 84 MB, so I guess all the messages is still there!
I have done backup not once on my P9, but this is first time when I got this problem. Sadly, Huawei Service Center says that something went wrong (like I didn't know that...), and they can't help me. Contacts was not syncronising with Google account...
Please help me

Are you sure that you are using the same version of Backup app.
Maybe you backed up with the newer and now after wiping and reinstalling you have an older version...
Btw, now is too late, but from Contacts you can also easily export contacts to the VCF file on the SD card, and later import them back

Excuse me, but I don't understand why it should be too late. I think, as you've stated, the problem is due to that, but I think also that the user could
1) wipe and reinstall the system
2) update Backup app on the PlayStore
3) restore by the backup on the sd card
