Hey guys im new to the Captivate. I use to be a heavy iphone user i had the iphone 3g then 3gs then 4 and well i decided its time to take the jump to android. All my iphone were jailbroken so obviously im interested in rooting. I rooted my Captivate the day i got it (Last saturday). I really want to get 2.2 Froyo. Now i keep reading about roms. I know how to load them but what are they, anything you can relate them to as iphone. Now on to my main question since im not to android friendly yet i want a stable 2.2 which one would you recommend to be the most stable. Ive seen Cognition and Axura but i dont know what they do nor do i know if theres better. Sorry to seem like a noob but i mainly got this phone for the learning curve of it so tell me everything haha.
Don't flash Axura first! If you do you'll be disappointed in every other rom you try, lol.
Cognition is a great first flash. It installs the lag fix for you and is very stable (get a non OC version). Axura is my favorite. It is very fast, has some IU tweaks, and they have great support. I still recommend Cognition as a first flash though as everything is done for you during the install. You can pretty much install it, change your wallpaper, sync your contacts and be done with it. (Make sure you sync you contacts with google before you flash)
One thing that I overlooked during my first flash is removing the sim card. Don't forget to do this.
Cognition was my first flash, and I haven't found reason to try something else. Its super fast and stable, and was really easy to flash.
I'm running the beta6 version. These phones are not known for long lasting batteries so I always avoid oc roms.

Cognition was great, but Perception is even better
Before Flashing I would read the post READ BEFORE FLASHING!!!!! under the dev forum - and make sure you understand how to restore before flashing.
And comparing Apple to Android really is trying to compare Apple to Oranges (pun intended).
NOTHING is the same between the two pretty much.
And.. I'd def go with Cognition as a first ROM - as it is a "basic" ROM that is currently using a Captivate kernel.
After you are really comfortable with tweaking your phone - you have your choice of ROMs. Just beware that the i9000 ROMS have their own unique issues - so flasher beware.
A rom, more or less is a package that updates your phones software. most roms are based off of foreign leaks.
When you flash a rom you are not just getting 2.2. In almost all cases you are getting a new kernel, most of which have s lag fix to further improve performance. Your modem will be changed as well, some moderns enable hsupa or basically faster upload and download speeds then what you have with stock.
Roms also have their own theme. Changes in the notification bar, menus, custom animations, boot animations. Etc
Do not flash anything till you read some, I would suggest starting with this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
This is a program that allows you to go back to stock, also allows you to recovery from a bad flash.
My vote on which to flash us axura or assonance. Axura may be the best option as it is a very user friendly thread and there are many people there who will help you if you need it.

You can have multiple roms saved to your sd. Flash stock, load rom. want to change, flash stock, load rom

started out with cognition and Axura once it was available.
Cognition, Axura, and Perception were my first three roms and didn't think i would wonder from DG.
Still think DG does great work but i have just about everything with the exception of Darkys (though i have seen a few new ones pop in in the last couple of days i haven't played with Insanity and the ginger clone)......
once i found and flashed Chronos i haven't looked back or missed any other rom enough to flash something else.
So my recommendation would be chronos.

Titanium Backup, it is free in the app store.
You can backup your apps+data, but it is not recommend to backup system settings. It only takes a few minutes to set the system settings, not worth any possible problems later on if you choose to restore them IMO.
ok i just flashed to Cognition Do i need to do anything i read something about the battery also keep seeing something about Voodoo care to help me?
I would read more before flashing
go to your my files. Should see a file called voodoo. Go inside, should be logs, go inside. If there are files in there voodoo is working. Not a bad idea to do a couple reboots

The last time I installed Cognition voodoo was installed automatically, not sure if they have changed it since then. Did your captivate talk to you during the first boot? They usually have a voice telling you what is going on while installing voodoo.
Ok voodoo is running because there 2 folders and file in there

I don't remember doing anything to the battery. They say to make sure it is fully charged before flashing. Maybe there are some tweaks you can do, somebody else who uses Cognition more will have to answer that.

You've got me interested. I'm going to try out Chronus. I'm a fan of minimalistic roms... it would take allot to sway me from Axura though. It just runs so smooth.
Hello, I just recently purchased a Samsung Captivate on At&t. I go to school with a kid who's totally into developing for android. He rooted my phone and put on the clockwork recovery, and Titanium Backup. We removed the At&t bloatware from the phone and now I'm picking up where he left off and I'm going to attempt to put a ROM onto the phone, I'm just having trouble picking one!
After reading and trying to understand everything, I'm trying to decide between the latest Cognition Rom, Perception Rom, and Paragon RC1.
I'm assuming they're all based on some version of Froyo. I'm looking for the one that will offer stable performance and better battery life than what the 2.1 is giving me now. Also, I couldn't tell but do any of these keep the Samsung UI or keyboard? I kind of actually prefer them to the normal android keyboard and interface.
Thanks!!
Dr3amCast
Well I've never used Paragon. But I have used Perception and Cognition.
Perception is based off of a leaked Froyo (I Believe)
Cognition 3.XX is basaed off the just released Rogers Official Froyo.
Both of those two roms have Swype/Samsung KB's to chose from
Try cognition. I think all of them are pretty equal in quality but cognition was made to keep a stock appearance with increased speed, stability and features while also offering better battery life and gps accuracy. I would say all of the roms you mentioned deserve a flash though. Also serendipity and firefly but who has time for all that.... i do.

I'm currently running Cognition 3.02 btw
I switched over from Perception 10.1 when Cog 3.0 was released.
just FYI... But as Blazin said. They're all worth a look!
Okay, thanks for all the advice! I think I'm going to try cognition first. I've seen a lot of people using Serendipity. So if I don't like cognition, I might flash back to 2.1 then try that.
No problema.
Just a heads up. Alot of people here say you don't have to, but I like to flash back to stock before any ROM. Just ensures a good flash

Okay, just wondering, I'm not sure what a "kernel" is, I'm using "Kernel Version 2.6.29", but do I have to change that as well to successfully switch to Cognition v3.02
thats the stock kernel for the capti ate.
When you flash the rom it will update I it to the set included in the package
Capti-sent
I'm quite sure you will end up flashing all three roms... Highly addictive.
No idea why everybody thinks it's SAFER to flash back to stock first. Delete user data in CWM and everything will be fine. If odin messes up, phone gets disconnected, power goes out, etc. while flashing the bootloader files then your phone is screwed. Well...at least hard to recover. It is NOT safer by any means.
I've tried both perception and cognition.
I really think you should try both of them out and decide.
And you should also look at other roms?? Just saying...

I have tried most roms on here. So far my absolute favorite is the Contiuum GT rom. Very lean and smokin fast. Second place would go to Cognition.
My best advice is to follow the threads for a bit to see what other users are experiencing. Usually people will post any issues and you can judge if it is crucial to you or not.
Me personally, I've been following phoenix, cog 3.0, and serendipity and so far still not sure which one to go for. I'm running on Cog 2.38b and it's pretty solid with some minor theme tweaks. Why break it if it works right? I'll probably try something new when I get bored.
maybe i am a little biased in my opinion of what ROM i am currently running....as I had a hand in developing it

Phoenix or firefly...

I've flashed Cognition and Perception, but I have to say that I'm enjoying Phoenix 3.5 the most.
I successfully flashed Cognition onto my phone last night...was enjoying it although didn't notice any improvement in battery life. Today, it wont stay on for more than 3 mintues without rebooting and being stuck at cognition boot screen. So much for that one! Now I just have to figure out how to flash back to the original 2.1...is that odin program hard to use?
Im using cognition 3.02 and love it no problems at all silky smooth. Battery life is ok not great so far
So, I have a SGS I9000t and am currently very frustrated with the official firmware 2.2.1, since some apps are having terrible issues. Whats worse is that lots of my programs are having constant crashes. My available ram is always getting capped, and i have to uninstall some programs that add functionality that while unnecessary they're nice to have.
Now I have been thinking, what to do? I hear I could flash my device. Doing so would improve its performance, even update to gingerbread. So now i have some questions. I bought this phone and recklessly installed darky's rom. It worked, but without 3g. Other than that, it was pretty amazing. I kept screwing around with it trying to fix 3g and finally bricked it. Took it in for warranty and got a new one.
I dont want to repeat the same mistakes, so this time i want to be extra careful.
Is there a way to do a complete backup? Like every single piece of data in ALL of my phone's memory backup. In case this flash goes wrong, I can just make it work just as it was before?
Is there a way to try roms before flashing? Like just load a rom on top of another rom without altering the current rom.
I would like to evade roms with 2.2.1 firmware, because of the problems mentioned before, so whats the best, non 2.2.1 rom available? Most stable, just plain best.
Since y phone is a i9000t my modem seems to have some problems when flashing, so here are the details of my phone: Model GT-I9000T // FW Ver 2.2.1 // Kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 // Build FROYO.UBJP9
Im sorry if this is a lot of info, i just want to do this right. If I flash my phone its for better funcionality, not to get worse. Thanks for your time, if youve read this far. Hopefully you can help me out.
You are asking to be spoon fed information that is out there already!

Ahh yes. Ive read a lot actually. Not the basic stuff though. I may have to sit down and read up.
One quick question though, Im sure its not in the FAQ.
I have been dealing with my phone and I see now that many of the problems im having are created by the apps themselves. Will changing my rom actually help greatly? Is 2.3.3 recomemded?
Sent from my GT-I9000T using XDA App
samsung use rfs file system that decays over time, hence people tend to lagfix to cure this, ie. Convert to ext4, this is done through a kernel tweak, you need to start reading and learning, im sorry but I wont do your homework for you!

Your problems are not due to 2.2.1 Its the best non GB rom .
Your first step is factory reset .
Second check Kies for an update .
Third step would be to remove these problem apps .
But i just spotted the problem at some stage you installed a darkys rom
Known killer of phones ..
Total removal is flash stock froyo 2.2 rom with pit and repartition checked .
jje
I flashed darkys rom but traded that phone for a new one. So I have a fresh factory 2.2.1 and its working very well. My biggest problem is the bug with programs resetting/not saving settings because the old data stays after uninstalling. Also the rom runs great, what im looking for is better compatibility on perhaps another rom. But you say its as good as it gets so I may be staying with this rom.
Edit; Also, I must add that Kies cannot update my device, because my service provider has my device locked on that firmware. Now what you suggest is flashing to 2.2, then updating to a stock gingerbread rom through Kies? Should'nt I just flash GB and get it over with?

Yeah, ODIN is your friend.
Well, now that I have a couple of people here, I will ask, which if these two roms would be better to install?
Gingerbread 2.3.3 stock Samsung or
Juwe's Smart Edition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964672
I like how juwes sounds, but it says something that bothers me, and that is, that it has no bugs, and that is an extremely ignorant claim, since the gingerbread release will always have bugs, no piece of software is perfect, ever. That said, it could be much better than samsungs, so help me out on this one. Thanks.

If you go around looking for a problem, you are most likely to find one. This applies to more than just phone firmwares. Like you said, no system is truly perfect... With that said, I would recommend you try a custom ROM over any stock one... And Juwe's ROM is a pretty trusted one on this board... so sure, go ahead and try it!

I'd say that the voodoo plus app still will be quite useful as it works its magic regardless of kernel. You might find yourself on a standard kernel one day, and then you will still be able to enjoy the improvements of voodoo.

This is a known problem, i had it happen to me several times on froyo firmwares. Solution is to go into settings, applications, then clear data and cache of the problem program, then uninstall it, and go into /data and /dbdata/ and find any data the program has left behind and delete it. Reinstall the app from the market, and the problem should be gone. Havent had it crop up in gingerbread yet.

First post, so take it with a grain of noobness.
I would like to get my feet wet in the rooted phone arena by using Voodoo, but I don't see that it has been updated for the Cappy running stock/ ATT Froyo. I see some stuff on the I9000, though, but I'm not sure if that will work, and the information seems somewhat dated.
So a few questions: is there another lagfix I can try that doesn't involve flashing a ROM?
Can I use Voodoo lagfix on my 2.2 Froyo phone?
Should I just nut up and do some more homework and flash to one of the latest ROM's?
You should definitely read more. There are dated kernels for 2.2 that will have lag fixes implemented that you could use, although I would suggest roms.
but reading its best

Well, If you like Froyo, forget about stock froyo and flash a custom ROM. Cognition is good. Plus the froyo custom ROMS are easier than most to flash. If you are a noob, this is where you should start. just make sure you READ TONS about flashing before you flash the first time. Good luck!

I run the latest froyo version of Cognition and absolutely love it. Ive run into small issues with just about every other rom ive ever flashed but with cognition I dont even run into the casual force close. Its just smooth as butter. I would highly suggest flashing an entire rom as typically the kernel is made to work directly alongside that particular rom.
Read up first though or your going to end up with a pretty little paper weight.
Lagfix on stock is stupid.
Reading and comprehension are the best but consider, when you've picked out a rom youtube it and see if an instructional video has been made on how to flash and watch it, twice if need be. I only recommend these because , being a noob( I speak from being one ) you don't know the time frame between steps, and if it sets on one for a few minutes well..it can be a little un-nerving ,anyway ,custom is the only way to go,.
well it would be different if he asked for 2.3.3 lagfix..

I've not been on 2.1 since phone came out. I would use odin one click to goto 2.2 stock. Root it then install cwm and then follow this guide if your going to try Galnet's MIUI.

Then just pop the MIUI.zip on root of sdcard and install from CWM.

Wow... so... You should probably READ a lot more before flashing anything, but I'll give you a few hints to get you going:
1) Make sure you understand what a "PBL", "SBL", "Kernel", and "Modem" are and how they are placed/installed in your phone.
2) Learn how to correctly and safely use ODIN (and/or Heimdall).
3) Learn about the various methods of recovery for "soft bricks", and if necessary for your hardware revision, possibly invest in a jig (also learn what a jig is)
4) There are 2 different types/branches of ROMs for the Captivate:
-- Samsung Branch
-- AOSP Branch
Within the "Samsung" types you have:
- i9000 ROMs (like JVP, JVR, JP8, etc)
- i897 ROMs (like JF6, KF1, etc)
Within the "AOSP" types you have:
- CM7
- MIUI
- Other AOSP-based ROMs
Which is "better" is relative. CM7 and MIUI have features that aren't present in the Samsung ROMs, and both offer a bit more customization than the Samsung ROMs. However, only the Samsung ROMs offer GPU accelerated video playback, and they tend to have significantly better battery life than the AOSP-type ROMs. Also the Samsung-type ROMs used to be much more stable than the AOSP branches, but recently, the tide may have turned in the other direction. Some of the low-level radio settings are also unavailable in any of the AOSP builds. And finally, some of the Samsung stock camera features are unavailable in CM7/MIUI.
It really all depends what you want... Do you want closer to stock "open source" Android? Or do you want Samsung's vision of what they think Android should be?
Also, the whole kernel/modem part is dependent on what branch of ROM you plan on running. When using a i9000-Samsung ROM, you pretty much have to use an i9000 kernel and modem. When using a i897-Samsung ROM, you pretty much have to use an i897 kernel and modem. The rules for CM7/MIUI are a bit more vague, but at the very least you'll need to use a CM7/MIUI (most AOSP-type kernels are interchangeable) compatible kernel.
The best advice is really to try them all out and see what you like the most. If you're currently on stock 2.1 (which it sounds like you are), at the very least you should upgrade to some variant of Gingerbread (2.3.4 preferably). You will definitely notice a big difference in terms of speed and functionality. From there, well, it's all really up to you...
OR alternatively, just start throwing stuff on your phone and see what happens. Just PLEASE don't come crying back in the Captivate General forum with a "OMG I bricked my phone!!! Plz help!!!" thread. Fair warning...
Just a suggestion, but become familiar with Odin one click. Make sure your captivate has 3 button recovery, and read, re- read, and read again the directions of every rom before you flash it. Always make a nandroid back up if possible, and read the threads.if you have questions, so did someone else and the answer is probably already out there .use search. Some People will rip your head off if you don't. as far as miui goes .....i was a flashaholic when I got phone. After switching to miui, It is very unlikely that I will ever leave. Best rom ever imho. And it updates every Friday so that satisfied the flashing urge. Usually it gets better with each release. The last couple have been a little rough though. Might want to spend the 8 bucks and have a download jig on standby. Can get it from mobiltech videos. Its worth it though

Fair warning...

a very simple and easy way to start with...
2.1 is eclair..
2.2 froyo
2.3 gingerbread..
means 2.1 is oldest and 2.3 is latest in case of official roms..
so obviously new version will hav more features and faster in speed...
so now u can take baby step and install 2.2 ..and use it for few days..and get the feel of it..then again after sometime u can install 2.3...
or else u can directly jump to 2.3....which is gingerbread....u can install stock kf1 on ur phone..its leaked official gb...if u search a bit..u will get it..
then u can use it for a lil while and get the feel of gb stock rom..in the meanwhile u can read xda abt available custom roms..and then install any of them...
coz every memeber here in xda will suggest the custom rom they r using..coz they r lovin the rom then only they r using....like for me..since the time i started flashin..i always used APEX ROM..so i will say its the best....
but again thats just me..
so decision is always urs...
