I would like to be able to compose mail and search with the Norwegian special characters, but of course since this unit's made for the US market they're not there. I tried installing Swype version for WVGA, but I couldn't even get it to show in the Extras or anywhere else. Can somebody please tell me about something I could use?
I tried to install the Scandinavian Keyboard by trygveaa, but I think the problem is that there is no way of changing keyboard settings. So is there a sneaky way of doing this?
Thanks in advance!
+1, very interested as I will be using mine in France, so would much prefer AZERTY keyboard.
+1 here, would love getting Icelandic letters
Hexodam, I know you need that. You can't write "Svarti dauði" in E-mails without them! You'll have to call it "brennivin", and that's not as cool!
Of course you could just drink mjød, but what's the fun in that?
Some people were able to install by replacing LatinIME.apk in system/app. You need to rename the softkey apk of your choice and replace it with LatinIME.apk. You have to make system folder writerble in order to do this. I wanted to install korean keyboared but no luck. After replacing apk korean keyboard shows up. When I touch it. It hides. Well don't forget to backup the original LatinIME.apk before you do this.
Thats exactly why, have to tell my friends "Drunk off my ass thanks to svarti dauði"

I tried with Astro, but of course it didn't work since the system folder probably isn't writeable. I searched for that on Google, but that looked a bit too scary...for me.

You can use Root Explorer to make it R/W, very easy to use.
Not easy enough for a Windows Mobile guy, it seems... I have Root Explorer installed, but I can't seem to find out how to make it RW. By Googling I found something about "Mount RW" by tapping in the upper right corner, but there's nothing in that corner.
I have used ADB and the method at NookDevs to make it RW, but that didn't really work. It says in the list that it's RW, but trying to delete or rename the LatinIME.apk nothing happens. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

So it's part of the system and doesn't show up under Manage APP settings? Do you just push the apk into the /system/app folder?

If you are saying that you want to install a random app you grabbed somewhere and the Applications Manager won't allow you to install it, you are correct. That is used to uninstall applications
You can install apps a few different ways. Personally, I only install apps while connected to my computer. So I simply...
Code:
adb install applicationName.apk
If I have a bunch of apps I wish to install, I use android commander (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622873)
Beyond that, you also have this option (http://android.modaco.com/content/s...e-clicking-on-your-pc-with-installapk-beta-1/) and there are also file managers (http://www.androidtapp.com/linda-file-manager-formerly-android-file-manager/) that will allow you to install apps.
Hope this helps!
Android Commander looks nice...and useful. Thanks for the links. I'll look into those programs to see if it does what I want it to do.
To elaborate on what I wanted...I took the IM.apk from enoms rom and installed it onto cy's rom using root explorer...but it shows under app manager...it's not 'flashed' into the system ROM. So I'm wondering how to install the IM.apk so that it looks like it came preinstalled with the ROM.
Hope nobody says that I need to make an update.zip... cause I think that would be a bit over my head.
Anyway...off to read up on the link you provided. Thanks!

ooooh! gotcha.
Push any system replacements over their original...so IM.apk, Mms.apk, etc all get pushed into /system/app as you originally thought. Sorry, I didn't quite understand what you were asking.
But through my confusion, you got reading material...
So I just installed better keyboard and I went to enable it and Im getting a message that says "This input method may be able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers. It comes from the application Better Keyboards. Use this input method?"
Should this be something I should be worried about?
No. That is the standard Android warning when installing any keyboard.
Anyone know if Swype is working on here yet?
Can't get alternate keyboard to enable
After I get an alternate keyboard installed, I can't get the checkbox to enable. I get the warning described above but then the keyboard doesn't enable and doesn't appear as a choice when you do the long press and select input method.
I have the same problem with an IME for pen reader. the main justifyer for me to purchase this tablet was to take notes at work but I can't get teh app to work... I am just waiting for 3.0 and hoping that it will evolve...

I was able to get SlideIt to work by installing it and then copying the apk file from /data/app and pasting it in /system/app. Then make sure to Mount R/W in the system folder and change permissions of the copied apk so that User is read/write and Group, Others is read only. Mount R/O. Now reboot. It should work now.
I am using TnT 2.2. There shouldn't be any need to enable it in the settings either. It will act like a system keyboard and will always be enabled. All you have to do is change input method by long tapping on a text box and selecting the newly installed keyboard.
I have tried this with a couple of other keyboards and it didn't work. Swype just says that it won't work with the screen size of the device.
I read this in another thread somewhere here. I can't take credit for this. Hope this helps.

I'm running the stock rom with the TNT enhancement pack. The strange thing is that I can't even find the downloaded apk file for the keyboard. When I go to the data folder in iFileManager, it is blank. What am I doing wrong?

From what I can tell, ES File Explorer can't see stuff in /data unless it is started AFTER the phone is rooted. Maybe the same goes for iFileManager.
So what I do is use z4root to get temporary root, kill ES File Explorer, then start ES File Explorer again. Then it can see /data.
Hope that this helps.

I use Root Explorer and I have no problems seeing any files at all.
Hi, I've searched, read, looked - and I'm not finding out how to do this. I've run several roms - and am liking the Precision line - but in the latest one, the swype keyboard was removed...and I really like the swype keyboard. Are there directions on how to get this working in my setup once I've flashed to the Precision 3.5 rom? I cannot figure out how to get a swype keyboard added - regardless of the rom, if it's not already there.....
Currently I'm running one of the other roms - just because I cannot figure out how to get this working. Sorry if I've missed something, I appreciate the time and work ya'll do - so trying to make as much effort as possible before asking repeat questions.
Cheers!
In the ROM you are using now get "super user" access (though I bet you already have it). Then download a file manager that will show root files (I use "Root Explorer" but it is a paid app); the only free file manager that I know of that will give R/W access to the root folders is "Android Mate" (just watch out it tries to be a little more than just a file manager and will try to become your home app, so don't let that happen).
Navigate in your current ROM to "/system/app" and find "swype.apk", then copy it to your external sd card so you will still have it when you load your new ROM.
Load the ROM you want and get "super user" access, download the file manager you used above (Paid or Free), go to your external sd card and copy the "swype.apk", navigate to "/system/app" and paste.
You should now be able to select and use your swype keyboard!
You can also use the free app Super Manager but it also tries to be more than a root explorer. Imo root explorer is well worth paying for.
Jeff,
Thanks - did that; so I'll reflash and try that. Do you know, will this approach work for the life wallpapers also. I started searching for that and gave up since that wasn't a rom deal breaker for me. :/
Thanks again!
Trying to use both the free apps failed - i.e. copying and pasting the Swype.apk does nothing i.e. I'm not ending up with this .apk in my system folder or any other folder I try. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, if you can't actually do this, or what. I don't want to buy something to try and change my keyboard....kinda silly TBH. Anyone know what might be going on?
Cheers!

Easiest way to get swype, I'm using precision as well, google swype beta then register and download swype installer, next install swype installer then run it login with user name and password you registered with it will bring up two options select either then download the rest is self explanitory.

Perfect; worked!
Thanks so much Jivy.

1. Change input method to any other keyboard.
2. In the /system/app folder, delete Swype.apk
3. In the /system/lib folder, delete libSwypeCore.so
4. In the /data/data folder, delete the com.swype.xxx folder
5. In the /data/dalvik-cache folder, delete the [email protected]@swype.... file.
6. REBOOT OR IT WON't INSTALL PROPERLY
7. Install and run the swype beta installer and follow the on-screen instructions. Installer link here http://db.tt/cD8HXlI
You also can rename the files to .xx.bak so you have a backup. This works 100% for me on Com Rom 2 after just installing today so I don't know how this will work on systems that have been used daily for a while.
I take no part if none of this works and permanently deletes swype from your phone. Your own fault.

Its the newest version of swype. I was running it when I was using JTs CM7 but I thought it was worse then our TW swype.

Its not I just swyped this from 3.0 I personally think its better I didn't make a single mistake while writing this when I usually do with older versions.

I completely agree with you, its a complete improvement from the last version. The word suggestion window is gone and moved to a frame above the keyboard, word prediction is way more accurate, swyping is more accurate, etc.
I'm a big swype user, so thanks for the instructions...may give this a whirl.
Where can I find the swype beta installer?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App

The biggest change (other than tablet support) with Swype 3 isn't even the much improved suggestion window or the faster and more accurate swiping: it's that Swype now does predictive tapping too.
No more need to switch between Swype and the stock keyboard or SwiftKey if you aren't in a swiping mood. That's why their tagline for 3.0 is - and I'm not making this up, just watch their promo videos - "Stroke it AND poke it."
So what color is the new swype?
Edit: My sywpe expired so im being forced to update. Instructions worked perfectly thnx.
Thanks for the instructions. Worked perfectly. Now to get used to the slightly different interface...
Thanks for putting this little tutorial out there cuz after updating to UKB2.1 the swype keyboard stopped working
I admit I might not the most brainy person when it comes to this
Had a heck of a time figuring out how to remove those system files... finally resorted to Root Explorer (paid app) to remove these files (I am sure there was a way to do it without, but I refer you to the above comment)
For some reason the swype beta likes to be authenticated twice...
and after the second authentication process, I made sure to reboot before using the keyboard...
so far it is working and I like the new keyboard... (I had better since it would take me another whole afternoon to figure out how to install the old swype keyboard)
thanks again and keep up the good work

Glad you got it worked out, but wanted to let you know not to feel bad about going to root explorer. You will likely find that you have a lot of uses for it - there is a LOT that goes on round here that having root explorer makes life a lot easier to follow...
Enjoy!
I just updated to 2.1 and my swype crapped out on me too. I've tried everything to get it working, but nothing works.
I've been trying to delete the swype.apk and other files instructed here, but they won't delete. 'don't have permission," "read only" or "Cannot Delete." I'm using Root Explorer too, and trying to switch Mount r/o to r/w, and it won't change! Someone help me! I'm going through Swype withdrawls already!
What program is everyone using to locate and delete files?
BTW, I've switched keyboards before I try to delete, still no luck.
neotrixy,
i remember having similar difficulty
try changing [mount r/o] button before you select the app you want to delete,
couldn't find a another protected system app to delete to try this again, but I was able to switch the mount button back and forth by pressing the grey button at the top of the screen
hope this helps
ps- i did find that someone posted a swype fix in the UKB thread (not sure if it works)... it is way back in the thread... but i had already switched to beta before i found it
No, i think already mentioned, for whatever reason, the button won't change to r/w. It's stuck on r/o. I don't know what the problem is, I've never had a problem like this before.
Thanks for the help though!
Any other ideas?
I think i got it fixed...I downloaded a newer version of Root Explorer, and it let me change the r/w.
Thanks guys!
ok,
It sounds like your Root Explorer program has not been granted superuser permissions yet.
I can't remember when it asked for those permissions, check in your superuser icon to see if Root Explorer is listed in there and has a green circle next to it.
I have been looking in looking around in the Root Explorer menus but don't see anything
I hope it is as easy as clicking the allow button in superuser, if not my other thought would be to uninstall and reinstall Root Explorer to see if it will ask for superuser permissions when you open it up.
good luck
Yes
Thanks for your help. I was so frustrated with Verizon having made that (or so they thought) permanent. That is so stupid they want their people stuck with an old version. Appreciate all your help. God bless in Jesus' Name.
Hi,
I installed Nameless ROM and I love it. However, I'd like to reinstall some apk from my stock rom backup, namely HTC_IME.apk and IMEXT9French.apk, which are french canadian HTC keyboard and system locale. I tried every way to install these. Copying to system/app, install from sdcard, from adb shell. Nothing works. I thought it might be because these utilize odex files and nameless don't. So I tried deodexing using xUltimate, but this too fails.
Any idea how I might fix this??
Thanks.
Did you try installing the apk with the default package installer
and what do you mean "Nothing works", does it not show in manage apps or the keyboard
I don't have the original apk installer because it came preinstalled on the phone.
By nothing works I mean that the french canada locale does not show under language and keyboard. Also the HTC keyboard in french is azerty whereas a french canada keyboard is supposed to be qwerty.
I know I can bypass this by installing another keyboard, but I liked the HTC one and I made a point to resolve this issue just for the sake of it and as a way to learn how all this apk and android stuff works.
I've finally been able to deodex the fils manually, but still not working. When I run the apk and choose install, I get an error message "not installed".
I guess there might be some dependant files that need to be present in the Framework folder or maybe elsewhere?
Any suggestion?
Thanks

Is it just the stock Canadian keyboard your looking for? If so let me know and I'll pull the apk and post it for you.
In the future Titanium Backup may be useful to you, it's saved my butt plenty of times.
You should be able to get away with unzipping this archive and copying the two files I've included to system/app/ then restarting the device.
Let me know if that works.
Thank, I will try that. I already tried copying these two files from my stock backup, but that was not successful. I'll see if it's different with yours. I'll let you know what the result is.
awful eourchas
I'm still getting the f$%?" ASZERTY keyboard whenever I switch to french. I found that I can keep the English keyboard and turn on the second language autocorrect for french, which is working but not ideal.
I will take a look at Titanium Backup and see if I can come up with something.
Yeah, I would try restoring with Titanium Backup, later tonight I can send you a TiBa file. Did the French keyboard use the qwerty layout when you were on stock? My girlfriend uses an Optimus l7 and her stock keyboard had two layouts, t9 and qwertz which was extremely annoying and hard to use.
Also, maybe it's worth while to look into another keyboard, I switched to SwiftKey and find its way more functional than stock. I don't find it is slow like I remember from over a year ago on my x10.
Sent from my HTC Desire C using xda premium
Yes my stock had a french qwerty keyboard.
I'll take a look at Swift Key. I had installed GoKeyboard but did not like it cause it takes way too much screen estate.
