I somehow don't have an internal_sd folder. Is this possible? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I've been have problems putting any update.zip into the correct folder on my captivate. I don't see an internal_sd folder anywhere!!! I see an external_sd folder, along with a hidden "sd" folder. Am I a moron? Can someone help?
I always get the error when trying to reinstall packages that says something about verification.

Your internal card is the folder that is mounted by Windows when you plug your usb cable and click Mount. Drop your update.zip in that spot.
By default it's the /sdcard.

So it's not an actual folder you see when you mount? I see all the other folders, DCIM, external_sd, etc... but no internal_sd folder. So it's just the root folder, with all the other folders under that? That's what I originally thought, but I kept getting the verification or no mnt/internal_sd/update.zip error.

So from what every thread says, the correct place to put the update.zip when using windows is in the hidden "sd" folder under the main root?

No. When you mount your phone to the pc, assuming you have windows, it will detect it then add a Drive letter under Computer. When you double click the drive letter representing your phone, you are viewing the Internal SDcard. That is where you put an update.zip. You will also see DCIM, Android, download, LOST.DIR, etc.

haha this is what I thought initially.. it's the root of the SD... maybe I just had a bad file or something. I'll give it a shot, tonight.

[Q] Deleted sd folder!

I have a Samsung Captivate and I accidentally deleted the sd (at least that is what i think it was called) folder. How do I get it back? If I just create a new folder that says 'sd' will it still save things onto my internal sd card?
my /sd/ folder is empty at least looking at it from the OI file manager on the phone
I think mine was as well but I want to put music on my phone and i want it to go on the internal sd. I tried seeing if the files would go directly on the sd so i put a few music files in a folder i created but when i checked my task manager the internal memory storage changed, not the internal sd storage.

It depends what OS you are running.
2.1 used /sdcard for internal and /sdcard/sd for external
2.2 moved these directories under /mnt but left the old directories empty

Does anybody know what to do if the sd folder is deleted?
I noticed I had an 'sd' folder and an 'external_sd' folder. The sd folder was blank, so I deleted it after I viewed it on my pc - there was nothing in it. It didn't seem to be needed. But now I can't view certain files on my phone only. I can view them on my laptop via USB connection using Windows Explorer.
To attempt to find this folder on my phone, that I CAN see on my laptop using Windows Explorer, I created a txt file in that folder (that I can't find on my phone), naming it 'sdmissing.txt'. I searched everywhere on my phone, even from root directory, trying to find this file and couldn't. Yet after connecting to my laptop via USB, I can see it. What can I do??
Thanks in advance for any help!

backup important data and apps with tibu or any other apps in the market and perform factory reset with your phone it should bring you back to where you are.

Turn off and on ur phone to see if it works for you or not. I found that sd is a hidden folder and its blank. When I flash custom roms, I do it without going to stock. But, I do delete Android, data, sd and some other folders, that I know will be automatically created after the reboot/flash. When I go to cwm recovery to install rom from zip, I do see the Android folder and sd folder showing up there. Don't panic. Just do normal shutdown and restart. If that doesn't fix, reflash the custom rom if you are using one.

How can I back up my SD card as an image

Want to try different ROM on my card but don't want to lose my present cm7 image. I thought I read that you could use win32diskimager to make an image that could be put back on but I don't seem to be able to. When I mount my card to my PC and ask win32 to read I get an error 8 message.
Is their some other free software that accomplishes this?
Pu the SD in the reader, open win32imager, select a directory and a file_name for your image, e.g. myimage.img, select the driver with the SD, read. It will create the image in the location you specified.
dd if=/dev/sdc of=cm7-sth-MMDDYYYY.img

Thanks worked fine after I gave it a directory & filename. Not the most intuitive software but free and it works.

I did this on my 16GB SD card and the image is only 4GB. I suspect it's only one partition. I am still looking into it.

[Q] How to format my SDcard without rebuilding?

I have a few odd files on my SDcard that have ASCII symbols as part of the name. I can't rename them or deleted them so I am was thinking about formatting my SDcard. I guess my questions are:
Can I format my SDcard without having to totally set CM7 back up again from scratch?
What's the best way to format it and what file system should I be using? I have a 16GB card I added a while back, I'm not even sure what file system it is on currently, can I look somewhere?
I am guessing I can just USB mount my SDcard, copy all the contents from it, format it (through Clockworkmod?), and then copy everything back to it?
I already copied everything from the card to my PC and I just skipped the files that had weird names and were stated as being invalid and would not copy.
You can see what I am running in my signature below.

When you format an SD Card it doesn't do anything to what's already flashed to your phone. Just backup the files you need to a computer then format the SD Card. Once its formatted, put your files back on. Simple as that.

There are invisible files and folders which in linux are preceded with a period like .android-secure etc. I know on mac they are invisible too, don't know about windows though. You may want to make sure you copy those too.

Yeah, I'm on Win7 and I have no files hidden, thanks though. I successfully used Clockworkmod this morning to partition my sd card, format it, and then copied all the files back. Seems to be OK thus far.

Basic Android folder, file structure and names

Okay I'm a newbie wanting to root and uinstall CWR but have been confused after reading several How to's. My S7 came with v2.2 and I received and installed v3.2 on the first day.
I read a post mentioning this link: http://www.androidcentral.com/dell-streak-7-getting-bugfix-update. I "thought" that I followed the simple instructions but maybe not! I downloaded the file, renamed it "update.pkg" and while connected to my PC copied it to the root of my S7.
I put the S7 into recovery mode, selected install update.pkg from sdcard. Now this is where some of the confusion starts. While connected to my PC, nothing is refered to as a sdcard and I don't have one installed.
Okay back to the install. The S7 errors with four lines of text. It's looking for either "update.pkg" or "update.zip" with a file path: /mnt/sdcard/sdcard2/. I forget the exact wording but it's something like Failed or Can't Mount followed by the file path.
This left my S7 only booting to the Dell Logo and unable to connect to my PC beacause it wouldn't boot up. I had to do a factory reset which surprised me going back to v3.2 and not v2.2.
The file path mentioned above appears to show that it was looking for either file in the sdcard2 folder which is inside the sdcard folder. I had and since reinstalled the File Expert app which shows /mnt/sdcard/ and /mnt/sdacrd2/ or sdcard2 as a seperate folder not nested within the sdcard folder. Here again, the term/name "sdcard" is used and I don't have one. Is "sdcard" used to refer to the 16GB of internal memory? I assume so.
I'm not sure now if I would have used File Expert to copy "update.pkg" to the sdcard2 folder that I may have worked or not? On the linked page above, you see that I posted a comment about the problem and there is also another person has a screwed up S7 now too!
EDIT:
Nope, sdcard2 is indeed the optional sdcard slot which is empty and File Expert just errors.
When you boot into recovery and you are at the main menu with all the different options, choose the option to update from "internal" sdcard. The key is "internal" sdcard.
Sorry to not be more specific but I don't have my DS7 handy.
Good luck.

I believe that there was only one option to install the update.pkg from but the point or question is, where is it looking for the file at? It appears that it's looking on the sdcard2 which isn't there!
This makes me wonder now, when a procedure states to put a file on your sdcard, just actually what are they refering to? The internal memory sdcard or an optional plugged in sdcard?
They are referring to the removable sdcard. If you don't have one, I'd suggest picking one up. It doesn't have to be a 32GB or even a 16GB. Then, put the update.pkg file on the root of that SDcard.
The filesystems can be very confusing on the DS7. Try it with a removable SD card and you should have better luck.

Yeah, why refer to the internal memory as sdcard?? The procedure for installing this update doesn't mention that an optional sdcard must be used either.
There's another thread where they appeared to have done that and it still failed! I may just wait till Dell puts it out OTA.

[Q] Multiple Internal and External Storage Paths

I was looking through my phone and found something a little odd. First, I found multiple paths going to my internal and external storage. For internal I've got "/sdcard", "/mnt/sdcard", and "/storage/sdcard0". For external I've got "/sdcard-ext", "/mnt/sdcard-ext", and "/storage/sdcard1". Is this normal or is there some problem on my phone?
Also, in my /mnt and /storage folders I have several empty folders called usbdisk_1.X (1.1 to 1.7). Are these normal or used by anything?
That's absolutely normal. The "real" storage path should be in the /mnt folder. The other ones are just symbolic links to that directory.
As Android is based on Linux you can see what symbolic links are in following Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link
It's not exactly the same but it's like when you in Windows right click a folder and select "Sent to" --> "Desktop" it's creating a link on the Desktop to that folder. When you open it you are directly in that folder. Difference on Linux is that you don't really notice that you are in a "link" folder.
So if you have a structure like /folder1/folder2 and you create a symbolic link to folder1 within folder2 and you would open they symbolic link in folder2 it would show you as path /folder1/folder2/folder1
Hope this explains it a bit
Thank you for clearing that up. I was thinking it was something like that since the occupied space on my sd card looked right.
It sounds like the symbolic links are the reason for my phone having two sets of "usbdisk_1.X" folders, but what are the folders for?

This are mount points. I'm assuming they are there if you want to use a lapdock and connect usb drives to it. As you haven't one connected they are empty. Linux is mounting external data just to a folder.
I was incorrect in my last post - the "real" path is /storage (just checked via Root Explorer by opening the properties of /mnt/sdcard-ext - it will show you /storage/sdcard1 as "real" path)
So for example if you remove your external SD Card you will still see the folder /storage/sdcard1 and as well the symbolic links like /mnt/sdcard-ext
But if you open them, they will be empty as you removed your external SD Card, so nothing is mounted to that folder anymore
Thank you very much for the clarification.
