If your getting permission denied and your running cm6 thats very strange. Go into the app superuser and see what all is in there. You might have accidently denied permissions to it somewhere along the line.
Might have to reinstall SU, you can't be unrooted and still running CM..
SU had it allowed so i'll try to redo SU
okay redownloaded SU from market abd installed but no change it still says permission denied and it doesn't prompt to allow through SU.

I think your phone is missing the SU framework. Do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9057544&postcount=1949.
That worked thank you very much

Your terminal actually outputs a smiley with its tongue sticking out? J/k, sarcasm.
Have you tried deleting the terminal from the permissions list of your SU app? Then just re-add it next time you use it, since your SU app is a new version. Maybe it just needs to be re-added properly to the SU app.
Or if that doesn't work, try deleting the whole terminal app, then rebooting, then reinstalling it from the market.
Also try a dalvik wipe in recovery if none of the above work.

And sounds like you dont have root since its saying permission denied. That is what it says when you type in SU right?

not sure why you quoted me but permission denied is what you get for about any command the terms doesn't understand, it looks like he type tldTLD: and got back perm denied. Not everyone here speaks "american" as there first language.

If you are running Recovery v1.5.2, then it actually does wipe dalvik even though it gives you that error. It's simply an output error that returns the wrong string of text after the operation is done...but it DOES actually wipe your dalvik even though it seems like it doesn't.
If you want, you can update your recovery to a newer one where that output error is fixed, but I still use v1.5.2 and have no problems whatsoever.

It sounds like you lost your ability to use proper english grammar. Jokes aside, just type in su in a shell, and if a "#" sign appears, you "got root"

i downloaded, installed, and it said it was successful.. i rebooted, went into the settings to see if it changed, and it still said 2.2.9. i tried to do it again and now my phone will not reboot into recovery using droid x bootstrap or rom manager... won't even go into it if i do it manually... i tried to uninstall bootstrap and rom manager and reinstalling, no luck. please help.

Try these comands from :
AllDroid Public Board»Motorola»Droid X Forums»Droid X Rooting»How to get 2.2, Rooted, on your Droid X
under:
If you have /system/xbin/su and /system/app/Superuser.apk, but cannot use "Superuser" (no prompts from Superuser app, "permission denied" when you try to run "su"), just do the following:
Run "adb shell"
Run "/system/xbin/su"
Watch your screen for Superuser app to prompt for permission and click "allow"
Run "mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system"
Run "cp /system/xbin/su /system/bin/su"
Run "chmod 4755 /system/bin/su"
Open the SuperUser application on the phone (app launcher) and make sure that "superuser" isn't listed and denied. If so, "forget it" and return to step 2. If you can't find SuperUser, it's not installed and you should download from this posts attachments and "adb install Superuser.apk"
[optional] Run "mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/system /system"
This should help you get your su working again.
not sure on your process so if you still do not have the .13 I would go back to your process and see what you are missing. I rebooted into recovery from bootstrap when I installed mine. Then I had to do the above commands to get my su back.
If you still don't have it, try the FULL instructions from here:
MDW Presents: Droid X 2.3.13 - The Froyo Upgrade
read through it and see if #5 from step 2 pertains to you.
The biggest thing to remember is to mount before you select the file to load on your sd card.
This thread:
Motorola Droid 2Droid 2 Android DevelopmentHow to root the Droid 2
will also be helpful regarding root if you have further questions.
Hope this helps.
My su is working fine. Nothing is being denied when I open it. Just cannot get to recovery with any option... im lost...

Maybe just double check through adb shell even if you are not having su issues?
Run "adb shell"
Run "/system/xbin/su"
Watch your screen for Superuser app to prompt for permission and click "allow" (I never saw any request)
Run "mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system"
Run "cp /system/xbin/su /system/bin/su"
Run "chmod 4755 /system/bin/su"
I had similar issues of nothing being denied after a successful install and had to do the su commands. It helped me to reboot into recovery afterwards.

I saw your post in the other thread. The best thing you can do is go through the links I gave you. Start with the root thread and click the more directions link in it. read through the processes and make sure you download all files and also understand what sbf is. Once you have all of the tools to do root and load whatever leak or rom you want you should be set. Understanding what is going on is key. This is a decision you are making to alter your phone for your benefit. Take the time to download SDK and whatever else is needed for your computer. Become familiar with what shell is and how to get there as well as explore within it. If you can get shell down and how to access your su and run commands, you should know enough to start. There are many things you need to research in order to be confident in what you are doing. I am sure you will not have a problem, just putting the time in to figure out everything is key. This is what I had to do.
I think that this is the best advice I can give you. None of us can know exactly what you are doing so you need to know the processes and choose which one is going to work for your circumstance. Good luck and if you have anymore problems I am sure all of us on xda can figure out a solution for you.
ok, finally, with a little help i got my phone rerooted and back to normal. learned a lot in the process too. thanks to all...
Alright, so I've used the SuperOneClick application to root my phone, which tells me was done successfully, however, I don't seem to be able to access files in the system folder through adb.
Is there some way I can positively confirm whether my phone is or isn't actually rooted? Like I said I was using adb to push a file into the system folder, and was given a permission denied message. At this time the only thing I'm attempting to do to the phone is this:
/showthread.php?t=820749&page=3
It seems pretty basic and it's my first android phone, so I'm starting off small here..
Using the leaked 2.2 FW, other than the being rooted (attempted), the phone is stock 2.2..

If you type:
adb shell
su (after hitting enter, you should get a popup on your phone asking for superuser permission, click allow)
If you see this:
C:\Users\*yournamehere*>adb shell
$ su
su
#
Then you have root permissions.

I have the app on my phone, but when I try this, I do not get a prompt for super user permissions, and the CL shell returns permission denied
EDIT: I was going to look at the superuser app to see what was in it to give you more info, but it the "app" that I assume is actually my computer had denied permissions. After changing it back to allow, the shell returns
Code:
su

I've been trying to figure this out all day and I'm stumped.
My stock Droid recently failed to get past the bootloader.
I'm following the directions from the CM Wiki titled "Motorola Droid: Full Update Guide" (no direct link because of my new account, sorry) and others I've found and they all seem to be exactly the same.
I've got SPRecovery installed no problem and after I run the update.zip I get a successful install message, including "enjoy your root".
The problem is in the next step where I ADB it doesn't appear I actually have root access.
I think this may be because I'm connecting to my phone from the SPRecovery menu, but I'm not sure.
This is what my cmd screen looks like when I try to follow the steps under "Installing ClockworkMod Recovery" > "Second Method (manual method)".
Code:
C:\Users\XXXX>adb shell
/ # su
su
/system/bin/sh: su: not found
I noticed that in SPRecovery there are "mount options", so I tried mounting /system and trying again and I get basically the same thing, but without the "/" and without the directory
Code:
C:\Users\XXXX>adb shell
# su
su
su: not found
I'm not Linux savvy enough to know the difference unfortunately. I've tried 3 different update.zip from 3 different sources, but all appear to be the exact same thing.
Typing "busybox" in the ADB shell kicks back all the functions so it appears to be installed.
"adb devices" kicks back "040388990E0EDITED recovery"
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, it's getting very frustrating.
Do you have the opportunity to root your phone from the Recovery-Menu?
I have OpenRecovery (OR) and when I boot in OR i can manually chose to root my phone.

I'm about 99% certain that is false. If it was that easy, I would have heard about it. Plus the only SU app on the market states " Grant and manage Superuser rights for your phone. This app requires that you already have root.."
Hello All,
I have been in and out of every Dev and General forum about installing the CWM on Z8. Unfortunately I have yet to find a solid solution to the below errors when using MTM's ZV8CWMRecovery bat. I would be posting in related thread on the dev site, but I don't have enough posts to post in there. So far I have seen multiple users with this problem:
Recovery for ZV8
Press any key to continue . . .
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
Device found
Mounting Device
remount failed: Operation not permitted
Pushing Recovery

Installing CWM Recovery
/dev/block/mmcblk0p14: cannot open for write: Permission denied
Remove Trash
rm failed for /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, Read-only file system
rm failed for /system/recovery-from-boot.p, Read-only file system
rm failed for /data/local.prop, No such file or directory
CWM Recovery!!!
Press any key to continue . . .
I have only seen a couple answers to this that actually address the error messages. One being to manually copy the local.prop into the data folder. I have tried taking the local.prop file and moving it to /data but when I do I get the error message on my phone saying java.io.filenotfoundexception:/data/local.prop (permission denied).
I feel that this has something to do with Superuser mainly because when I have tried to use other methods like using quick boot or Rom Manager to boot into recovery, I get messages saying that Super User has denied access.
1) Is anyone else having similar Super User problems when they get the CWM installation error above?
2) Can anyone think of a correlation bewtween the super User error and the CWM installation errors?
3) Can anyone give any usefull insight into what these mean?
rm failed for /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, Read-only file system
rm failed for /system/recovery-from-boot.p, Read-only file system
rm failed for /data/local.prop, No such file or directory
Any support is much appreciated.

I am going to try the suggestion in this thread right now.

I will let you know.
OK, I have decided that my main problem right now is that SuperUser is denying access to every program that could help me (Quick boot, Rom Manager, Terminal emulator). Every time I try and run any of those I get a message saying it was blocked by SU. I have set SU to allow all requests, yet it still Denies access?
Anyone with Ideas on how to stop this without starting from scratch?

Sounds like the phone did not root properly. I had that problem before where i had superuser but no root access to anything. My solution was starting over from scratch, im not sure how to do it w/o starting over. If you have everything on the computer already then starting over should only take 15 mins or so. For me thats how long it took after i had all downloads and installs in place

Thanks for the info. I did end up starting from scratch and the superuser thing was definitely a root problem. I cannot figure out what permissions I need to change or how
