So, the other day I was working. Great story, huh.. Anyways, I pulled my phone out of my pocket, and I noticed my Clockr date widget had magically turned on it's background (I have it set to transparent), So I went to fix it, but when I clicked it, Spare parts came up?!? I thought maybe I must have just clicked something else, But the next 8 times I clicked it, the same results came up.
So, I'm wondering if there is some kind of custom shortcut to have a widget linked to a different app. Apparently, my pocket is smarter than me and knows how to do this. If there is such a thing, I would like to know about it here is a screenie so you can see that I didn't just click spare parts.
Im kinda confused but if you're asking how to make custom settings shortcut, just hold down finger somewhere empty on the screen and you can set it up.

Yeah, not anything close to what I said. I'm also pretty sure if I didn't know how to create a custom SHORTCUT like you said, I should not have rooted my phone.. Anyways I'm guessing my phone just glitched and what I'm trying to find out doesn't exist yet, due to the large number of responses I got
Beautiful Widgets has options to open diff apps when touching diff areas of the clock/weather widget. Its in the settings somewhere to change it.

I'm looking for an application dock like in open home..does anyone know if their is one available without open home?
thanks in advance....
Haven't seen one, but it would be sweet. Just a widget with last 6 apps used would be cool. Or drag and drop, like a tray.

you mean like when you hold the home key down?
It's not quite what the OP is looking for, but try "Bar Control" which allows you to put launcher icons for your favorite apps in the status bar.

Exactly but a widget.
Seems silly imo, but thats my opinion...unless you mean something like the iPhone dock? dxtop has a second tab that keeps track of recently used apps. That's the closest thing I've seen yet. Since 1.5 is officially on its way to the masses I think you'll see a ton of widgets hit the market soon.

its in one of these "HOME" apps somewhere..
yea i cant wait until more widgets come out.. i had to not use Open Home anymore just to see the stock widgets.. money comes, money goes.. LIFE!
Id be willing to bet money that once stock 1.5 gets pushed open home will open their app up to the new widgets.

They have a working beta and it works with all widgets. When you install it though it wipes your screens clean and you have to redo everything. Also folder icons go back to default at random But its a small price to pay for the widgets i think

SweeterHome has app trays that can be installed. You pick the apps/shortcuts, etc you want in the tray and can customize almost EVERYTHING!
Also, has what they call "springboards" which is an icon/shortcut that will open up an app tray (or) that can contain anything you want.
I've been using it for quite some time. It is in development - but, most of the major bugs have been worked out.

Anyone else wishing they would have modified the market to allow for Apps + Games + Widgets in the menu? It's going to be a pain in the butt finding new widgets with all the apps.
I love dxTop implematation of the app dock.. just swipe the drawer pull tabs to the left or to the right and there ya go. BRILLIANT!
I've searched this and other forums and still can't ffigure out how to change an applications name for a Rooted G1. I've been able to change an application's icon by switiching the .png in the drawtable folder, but where the heck is the apps name info stored?
Thanks for your help in advance.

That is probably going to require either editing the appropriate xml files, or rebuilding the ROM from source to be able to get access to other appropriate files. It may be more trouble than its worth. There may be an app for it, but I am not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in if they know of another way?

Well its been a long minute since I've used any home replacement but you can still use bettercut on with using open home or ahome. The only thing I'm wondering is when you change the name of the app does it only change on the home screen or in the app drawer to. I'm to lazy to do it myself.
You don't need a home replacement to use Bettercut.

O, well I know I didn't help either with being confusing. Its one of those days.
bettercut is only for app shortcuts on your home screen, it won't change the name in the app drawer.
BTW does it work without a home replacement app?

Yes

Thanks for everyone's help in trying to solve this one. As previous post's have noted; Bettercut will only change the name on the Home screen or App drawer, not in the application list.
How about this...if it's too much trouble to rename, is it easy to hide an application from appearing at all?
Thanks to everyone!!

No its actually quite easy to keep it from appearing.....uninstall it.
Oh come on you gotta admit, you were asking for that one LOL
I'm assuming you don't want it appearing in your app drawer? Is that the issue? Are you talking about applications that come on the ROM that you don't want anymore. Please provide not only the end result of what you are looking for, but also a little background and maybe that will help with an answer.
Yes, I did set myself up for that one.
It's a 3rd party app that runs at startup. I would like to hide the app from appearing in the Manage Application menu. Thanks again!!
You can use the modified launcher to hide installed apps from the app drawer but I dont think you can hide from the manage applications section.
Thanks for the input Rodney!
can u also rename apps with the modified launcher?
Would it be possible to modify a firmware or create an app that runs automatically, that would let the home button be used to lock screen? Kinda like the last thing, after returning to the home screen?
yes i guess it's possible, since it's open-source you can almost all you want.
I guess it has to be implemented in launcher.
Should be possible...
Alternatively, is there a widget that simulates the lock button ?
Would be handy for me, i always mute my phone when i want to lock it LoL
hello guys ...
Perhaps there is an application that can do for you ..
Download by market a free application called "lock screen widget"... put the widget on the home and lock the screen just click on the widget ..
I find it amazing ..
I hope you like it
Sorry if my english is not very good
Im using a paid app called screen off. Works great. Tried other free ones but didn't work well.

Thanks for your suggestions. Im only interested in the actual home button. If someone would kindly start develop something that could do the trick for me, I would be the first to donate 10$?
I'll try to look into it, I have simple yet not-so-sure-about idea.

So I've been spending the better part of an hour trying to convince widgetlocker to block sms popup but can't seem to figure out the proper system name. I have tried "SMS Popup", "android-smspopup", and "com.smspopup.*" any help would be greatly appreciated.

why not just uninstall SMS popup or tell SMS popup not to try and unlock screen?
It doesn't unlock the screen. It pops up in front of widget locker instead of waiting for me to unlock it like it does by default. I tried the whole trying to figure it out through installed apps thing too. Even tried finding it before the names changed in running apps list. Not happening.

I'm also trying to figure this out... I love the customization for individual contacts that SMS Popup offers, and I'm not ready to lose that.... so if anyone can figure it out... haha.

I have never once said it unlocks the screen. And it never unlocks the phone on any setting. It does turn the screen on by default but I turned that off long ago. the problem is when I turn the screen on sms popup sits on top of the lockscreen with widgetlocker. Widgetlocker has an option but you need the actually system name such as "com.handcent.nextsms" to handcent. I just need that one little line of text to fix this. Just don't know what it is for sms popup.

Ahh but I am using sms popup as I like the stock sms app.

All you had to do to get that line was navigate to /data/app with root explorer and find SMS popup.
net.everythingandroid.smspopup-1.apk
Its a liveable issue. It doesn't wake the screen at least but I know there has to be a way to figure it out. Its probably not even that hard but I don't know enough about programming or how android works to do so. I've been on vacation since the issue started and getting on a plane home now. Hopefully ill be able to figure it out with a better workspace blah.
Edit: either you posted that while I was typing or im blind. I actually tried that my device just showed smspopup.apk I thank you very much sir.

I'm interested in this as well. I have TuneIn Radio installed, and always get the option to open that or Clock, but that's it. If nothing else, I'd like to open a slideshow or news reader.

I've been waiting for an Android app that does the picture slide show like WebOS pretty much since CM9 came out for the Touchpad.
Maybe one day!

check out Desk Clock Plus that i mentioned above. I got to play with it a little last night, and there's an option to do a slideshow. unfortunately, idk how many more goodies we can expect to see for our old beloved touchpads.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Seems to need a load of permissions considering it's application (a clock) - I'm always wary of an app that wants loads of permissions and especially control of things like system settings without proper explanation, etc.

Yeah, I hear ya. It has a ton of different settings, I think including stuff like changing the lock screen and display/screen timeout, which I assume that is for. I wish there were more fine-grained permissions sometimes, or a way to disable certain ones and still have the app work, just not the particular feature that the permission relies on. I believe in CM that's possible at least to some extent.
