Hello,
Even at the lowest brightness, the NC screen is still too bright at night. Is it possible to get a lower brightness level on a rooted NC?
Thanks,
Anat
If you are Rooted and have Quick Settings installed, try to adjust the Brightness from the app.
It also has an Auto Adjust brightness setting, if the Nook has a light sensor it will most probably work.

Automatic brightness doesn't work when set. Screen will go to dim and won't change. I believe the light sensor is to the left of the N button. At least I think it's a sensor.
Could anyone with a rooted NC try AdjBrightness (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731032) and see if the brighness can be set lower than the factory mininum level?
Thank you very much.
Yep adjbrightness works great with the NC. Great find!

Do you mean that I can get a lower brightness level than the factory setting? How much lower is it?

looks darker than stock to me.... enough to where it might be too dark in any lighted setting.. It sounds like that's what your looking for..
wow thats some serious hackage any value below 5 causes the screen to flicker for me, but with brighness of 5 i can barley see it in a pitch black room!
What value is approximately the factory minimum level? The software seems to be a solution for me Thanks.

Wow! great find
definitely gonna try this out when I get the chance
I would like to state that this app still works wonderfully for CM7. Its great because I find the stock brightness to be way to high when it is at its lowest setting.

Hello everyone
I just got the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S yesterday and my worst nightmare has come true. I have sensitive eyes and keep brightness on all my equipment at the lowest level. I had asked someone before buying this phone and he told that it is manageable but now I find out that the screen is way toooo bright even at the lowest setting!
It strains the eyes + drains the battery.
Suppose we are not connected to internet through any source. Then if we refresh any widget we get the error "Please check your network access" and the screen goes dull in background. Now thats the perfect setting I would like for the phone.
Any idea how we can reduce the brightness even further through Mod or through factory settings or somehow?
I would really appreciate any help on this one.
Regards.

Try fiddling with your phone in the morning, just as you've woken up. It works as a nice wake upper though. .
Android default min brightness is 8% (even though it reads 0%).
Two apps that give you less than 8%, both goes to 0% :
- Brightness Level by CurveFish
- Dimmer (Night Mode) by geekyouup
Also, look into changing your background color to black, it'll save you battery and be easier on your eyes. Lastly, the browser has its own brightness setting, found by hitting menu > settings.
Alternatively, only use under direct sunlight.

Thanks. I would try the dimmer and see if 0% helps somewhat though I have read that its only marginally better.
I am hoping that there should be a way to reduce it somehow since it gets reduced when we see some error just like I mentioned in 1st post.
I agree even at the lowest level its way to bright.
I have the curvefish brightness app, but even set to 0 its too bright for use in the darkness.

I've actually written that it's only a marginal improvement, but I omitted that opinion here since I think my opinion is less applicable to someone with sensitive eyes. You might perceive a 3x decrease than what I did, not sure if that'd still be enough.
Again, I think changing to a dark background will get you more mileage, if you haven't already done so.

Currently I am using a relatively black background but when surfing most webpages have white background and that really is painful! I guess I may have to look for some tinted screen protector!
i know this may sound strange, but If I wear my sunglasses at night while browsing it works quite well
You can also use tasker for lower brightness levels..

I am currently using "Dimmer". It takes the brightness levels from 30% (Though in settings it show minimum only) to 10%. I have also tried "Quick settings" so I guess tasker would perform the same function.
When we have locked our screen and we have to unlock we have to slide the screen. When we do that it seems like we have to slide a transparent layer of glass which is quite dark.
Now I am no developer but is it technically possible to create an app which is like a layer of tinted glass on screen so that it dims the screen further?
Regards
I haven't tried the dimmer apps yet but I DO agree that I miss my iPhone which can be set to a much lower brightness level for better privacy, night vision, "before sleep reading".
but I think it has something to do with the display technology. The OLED for Samsung may not permit such low levels or so. I am not sure...

At first even I thought that and I was worried about that. But there are some times for example when you get some error on the screen the major part of screen goes quite dull so it is indeed possible to do that technically I guess just that it cant be done through brightness.
I am baffled why did the Samsung/Android guys set lower level of brightness as option also. It would have cost them nothing and would have saved us a lot of strain and battery life.
PS: Is this the issue with Android or Samsung?
To someone with a bit more knowledge: how hard would this be to do something about? We all know the screen dims to a level that's not for the moment available to manually set some time before it shuts off, so it's got to be a way.
The screen is just too bright for me at the lowest setting - meaning it hurts me eyes (some pity here Samsung) and consuming a lot more battery than it needs to.
+1 for the app that will do this
got me new galaxy s for a couple of weeks now.. but really miss my old htc hd... the minimum backlight setting was awesome for nighttime reading/browsing.
switching on the sammy in bed in the week hours of the night makes my eyes burn! hehe.
an app to force lower or add a filter over the entire screen would be awesome!
samsung galaxy s has a SUPER AMOLED display which is why its bright even at lowest level.

Well I dont know for sure. The device has been working same since the 1st day. I guess its just that the brightness is too much for me. As far as the screen is concerned I didnt notice anything significant but any easy way to check about the problem?
Regards.
hey all,
I have a 360, and picked up a R to try out (I like that it looks like a "normal" watch). One thing I have been tinkering with is the screen settings. I like the "ambient" mode on the 360, which I guess makes use of the sensor. With the G, so far, all I can see if on or off. And even with the brightness dialed down to 1, it still seems pretty bright at night. Has anyone found this to be an issue or to address it? I have a little time to decide which I want to keep.
Any other advice for the watch would be much appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance!
With Wear Mini Launcher you can setup brightness below Level 1.
With "SWApp True Dark" you can setup brightness from 0% to 100%.

Thanks, I will give it a shot. Can you automate the timing of the brightness level? So, now when it gets dark at 5pm, adjust?
Thanks again
It has a trigger setup for night but not understand well how it works :
Seem to automatic dark after "x" minutes between "00:00 To 00:00" so you can go dark 1 min after no interaction between 20:00-06:00 I think.

How's your auto brightness working? If I set mine to auto it just dumb. In a dark room the screen just gets dark. I mean, it's always in a lower brightness setting.
Can't use it in auto.

Same. I never usually like autobrigtness for the reasons you mention. I remember an app called Lux which was great at the time, as you could customise the brightness levels per lighting environment and was much better at managing brightness automatically.
For now though I generally keep my brightness around 20-30% indoors, pretty much 100% daytime outdoors (or ill put autobrigtness on then) and around 0-10% in the dark/bedtime - sometimes with reading mode on too
Surely it's something to be fixed... Unusable for now

I think it's just not possible to manually set highest brightness of display in Android 9. But is there any way how to set it via some app or edit something?
I know there is toggle for adaptive brightness, but setting it for full brightness will just make display cca 70% of possible brightness. The 100% brightness is on only when sunlight comes to the light sensor. When I use Note9 for flying DJI drone on sunlight, I want to have 100% display brightness for that 10 minutes of flight. It's just sooo annoying that I have to use separate flashlight - shining to the Note9 sensor to have full brightness on sunny day in shadow. Otherwise, just manually set brightness is not enough for flying and reflections are stronger than display...
Thanks for ideas!

Really easy fix..
- pull down notifications
-expand all notifications
-expand brightness settings by hitting the downward facing arrow (brightness settings)
- select "show brightness settings on top"
Now you can bump up your display brightness for those 10 minutes. It would be absurd to spend any more time on an app selection

Thanks, but I can say I'm kind of poweruser So again - When you set brightness manually all the way up, it's just 70% of possible brightness. It still uses light sensor to detect light and if you face the sensor (still manually on full) towards the sun, ONLY THAN you'll get 100% of hardware brightness.
Haha, okay... Maybe somebody else with Note9 and experience with Samsung's "outdoor display mode" may know. Anyway, see the attached image, maybe you get that point from other user...
I've use to do it on my Note 2 this way, I don't know if it will be any help. I know what you mean, the extra brightness is there, you just want to be able to switch it manually.

There are a number of apps in the 'Playstore' that purport to do what you want.
The one that I use is called 'High Brightness Mode', it's a free app and enables you to place a widget that can be used to manually crank up the brightness to beyond the 100% shown by the brightness indicator,.
According to the instructions, it goes a lot higher if your device is 'rooted', but nonetheless works on 'unrooted devices too.
It seems rooting is the only way how ti get 100% brightness...

could have just tried turning on adaptive brightness. from what i read outdoor mode wont trigger unless you are on adaptive brightness at exactly 100% brightness.
if i had to guess its because the max brightness in the sun causes display burn in- so to limit the issue they only allow adaptive brightness to go past the 75% software max

Yes, but as the OP was trying to point out, the software absolute max is actually about 15-20% below the hardware absolute max capability.
This can be enabled by tweaking the sys file related to brightness, to rewrite the specific line, you need to be 'rooted'.
jd14771 said:
I have yet to see you provide instructions on how to do that.
regardless you dont need to be rooted to get the extra brightness, conditions have to be met in order to save the screen from burn in abuse. There are tons of people reporting burn in from the outdoor mode. it only make sense that only adaptive brightness can take the screen into danger territory, probably has safegaurds built in to avoid damage to this $1000 phone. so far ive provided more insight than anyone.

Once 'rooted' there are a number of 'Magisk/Xposed' modules that can be installed to push the brightness beyond what's available by default.
Did you want me to detail the 'rooting' and install process?
If you do a quick 'Google' you'll find a number of threads on 'XDA', 'Reddit' etc, going back a number of years which are the focus of the OP's issue.

The brightness slider full to the right, regardless of the adaptive brightness setting is as bright as the phone gets.
How do I know this? Because e-ticket apps such as Ticketmaster and mobile payment apps like Samsung Pay go full brightness when showing barcodes, and there is no difference between manually set 100% brightness and 100% brightness when set by Ticketmaster and Samsung Pay.
The problem you are facing is caused by those who wrote the software that displays the video feed from the drone.

incorrect, the sun brightness method as well as youtube and the photos app does go brighter than the screen is normally i have max brightness past the line adaptive brightness off performance mode turned on with brightness set to 10+ specifically which boosts the brightness past the normal brightness as well as vivid mode but still not the same as the brightness you get in youtube apps or on the photos app, the xperia 1 and xperia 5 does this too and i thought it was specific to them.
