Cant get winimage to work - Nook Color General

I downloaded winimage and im following the root instructions and when I go to disk I can choose the sdcard but then there is nothing in the folder I extracted nooter to. The folder is empty. The instructions say to click on a drop down menu to show hidden files but I have no drop down. What gives?

When choosing file next to the file name field where it says Virtual Hard Disks (*.vhd) click there and instead choose All Files. Your .img should now show up and you should be good to go.

THANK YOU!!

noob qn...copy Kaisertweak XML to phone

noob question...i managed to copy the kaisertweak.exe to \My Documents\Personal by just browsing to it and doing a 'Save As'. However, this doesn't seem to work for the XML...it wants to display it in the browser. I've tried renaming the xml file with a .dat extension, an .exe extension and without an extension...but it won't let me download the file. What's the best way to get the xml file from the web (http://www.fxnexus.com/storage/kaiser/kaisertweak.xml) to my device?
(I don't want to use an intermediary PC to transfer files.)
thx, fxs.

all you got to do is in your browser hit FILE > save page as. select only save xml, not full page. if that dont work, then just go here and download the ZIP file that contains both the new kaisertweak exe and xml files.

On IE ...on my device?? I don't have a File Menu option!
Once I load the xml file within IE...all I have at the bottom is a 'Back' menu option, and a 'Menu' menu option. 'Menu' has Edit, View, Tools etc...but no 'File'.
I tried doing a Edit --> Select All --> Copy and then, went into Word Mobile to paste it all and save as text...but then, I'm left with a '.txt' file that I cannot rename to '.xml'.

do it on your PC not in the WM. if you insist on using your device to dl, then i suggest installing a unzipper. then you can just download that kaiser tweak zip file to your phone. unzip it on the phone and you got both the exe and xml right on the phone.
Can't install Kaisertweak on AT&T Tilt
I've tried installing this two ways:
1. On my PC: when I click the .exe file, I get the message: "KaiserTweak.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
2. On my Tilt: when I click on the .zip file, it shows KaiserTweak.exe and KaiserTweak.xml, but the latter file has the Opera browser icon next to it and the description "Unknown Type." When I tap on KaiserTweak.exe, I get the message: "Unable to open file \Windows\-IA Zip Temporary Files\KaiserTweak.xml". Press OK to ignore and risk data corruption. Press Cancel to kill the program." When I press OK, nothing happens: I'm brought back to the display of the .exe and .xml files.
I'm assuming the program is not installing, and that I'll know that the installation was successful when I see KaiserTweak when I select Start/Programs.
Thanks.

Is there a Cabs installation tutorial????

I've searched and I've asked and no one wants to help...Could someone please point me in the direction that I need to be in
Purpose
Sliding sounds
Games
and other applications..
Thanks
A CAB installation is just like a Desktop installation but on your phone... Transfer the CAB to you phone (I put all mine on the memory card), click on the CAB, then install app. Generally if you have a memory card, the CAB installation will give you the choice to install to the phone or card.

So I copy the folder to the card..Then I click the cab from the desktop or using the phone???
*tries it out now*
Thanks man for you input
On your storage card create a folder called "cabs". Then put the cabs you want to install on your phone in this folder. Then open up file explorer (on your phone) and go to the cabs folder. Then select the cab you want to install by pressing it on screen or with the hard down key. Your phone will start to install the cab and it will ask you where you want to install (either phone memory or your memory card), choose which one you want. Note that some programs work better when installed to the phone (read and you'll find out suggestions). After the installation is complete your phone will tell you that it was successful.

I don't know
"click on the CAB, then install app. Generally if you have a memory card, the CAB installation will give you the choice to install to the phone or card."
Do I unzip with the phone or the desktop???? I copied the folders to the card...after that I'm lost...How do I run the application???

Unzip the folder on your computer and transfer the cab over into the "cab folder" on your memory card. Open file explorer on your phone, navigate to the "cab folder" on your memory card, select the cab to install and your done. No need to copy the whole folder to your phone, just the cab.

That is not a .cab I will attach a cab for you to try. I it is the transformers sliding cab. No need to unzip. Just download it to your computer and transfer it to your phone with either activesync or take out your memory card, stick it into your computer and put it in the folder you want. Let me know if it works.
Ron
thats the one I'm trying to use...So I need to pull the memory card out and active sync it... So how do I add those to the active sync task????

Open activesync and conect your device. Make sure you have a green symbol and click explore which is to the right of schedule. It opens your device and navigate to your memory card and cab folder if you have one. Then on your computer right click on the cab you downloaded and select copy. Now go to the window you brought up when you hit explore and right click in the destination and select paste. Now you have the cab on your phone. Next, on your phone open file explorer and navigate to the folder where you just pasted the cab and select it.

+1!!!!!!!!
Do not uncompress (unzip or rar) cab file.
He is uncompressing the cab into a folder and transfering it. His compression software shows the cab as compressed.
Just transfer the cab uncompressed and click on it and it will install. I bet that does the trick.
Also, if you want you can change it so that your compression software doesn't see CABs. I use WinRAR and you can just uncheck it under options>settings>integration and just uncheck CAB.
... LOL?...
a .cab is the "installer file" in windows mobile.
Steps:
1. Copy the .cab file into your phone
2. Open the File explorer in your phone and look for the .cab File
3. Click on it
4. Choose the place where you want to install it
5. Enjoy your new program(or sliding sound or anything)

Thanks Batchell..However I was able to get my question answered by ANOTHER HELPFUL FORUM!!!!! I've only had my phone for 2 months and I DIDN'T know that you didn't have to unzip the files...I didn't have to worry about that stuff with a TREO... So to all that was helpful I really appreciate it..and the others with all of the slick jokes are bunch of assholes...yep I said it..Thats why I asked for a tutorial for cab installation smartass!!!!!!
This is a developer forum. If you ask a question here, it is assumed that you have a moderate level of computer literacy. This includes being able to unzip files.
Next time, please state you know NOTHING and people will give you the appropriate level of help.
Before others flame you even more for your last comment, I'm closing this thread for being inflammatory.

Code:
[b]Download the attached zip file.
Extract it to (wherever you like) then follow the instructions below.[/b]
==============================================================================
Step by Step instructions on how to create your custom splash screen
for the Diamond and Rafael windows mobile.
==============================================================================
Step 1: Create your image
-
Choose, find or create the image you would like to have as your splash screen.
Use your image editor (photoshop is my choice) to adjust your image.
The size of the picture needed for the splash is 640x480 72dpi.
Save it as (24 Bit) (bmp) in folder (2-bmp to rsb to bmp).
goto Step 2.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2: Convert your image from *.bmp to *.rsb
-
Run rsbbmp.exe in folder (2-bmp to rsb to bmp).
Click on [Add Files] and choose your bmp.
Click on [Convert All]
Your image has now been cloned and converted to rsb format.
Move or copy your rsb file to folder (3-rsb to nb).
goto Step 3.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 3: Convert your image from *.rsb to *.nb
-
Run Splash-RSB Converter.exe in folder (3-rsb to nb)
Choose VGA (640x480) then press [Convert].
Choose your rsb and save it in folder (4-patchsplashv0.1) click on [Done]
goto Step 4.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4: Patch your image file.
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember, patchsplash.exe is a command line tool. If you run the program by double
clicking on it a cmd window will open showing you examples of the command line you
will need to type to patch your *.nb that is all.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, open the folder (4-patchsplashv0.1) in Windows file explorer. Copy the
address found at the top of the explorer window.
example: D:\PDA\HTC\splash\4-patchsplashv0.1
On Windows, Start Menu->Run... Click on Run then paste the address you copied
from win explorer then type the rest of the line needed for patching.
My example:
D:\PDA\HTC\splash\4-patchsplashv0.1\patchsplash R YOURFILENAME.nb YOURFILENAME_P.nb
\patchsplash R YOURFILENAME.nb YOURFILENAME_P.nb -> Rafael
\patchsplash D YOURFILENAME.nb YOURFILENAME_P.nb -> Diamond
Press enter and you're done!
A cmd.exe window will pop up telling you the process is complete.
REMEMBER
The first part of my example "D:\PDA\HTC\splash\4-patchsplashv0.1\"
is what I copied from win explorer.
"I" then move the new "_P.nb" file to the folder (5-nb to nbh) so not to
confuse it with the unpatched file.
goto Step 5.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 5: Create the *.nbh for flashing
-
Run NBHutil.exe in the (5-nb to nbh) folder.
Note: (the NBHUtil.xml file has to be in the same folder as NBHUtil.exe).
On first tab 'Build NBH', in the 'Target Device' list, choose "Diamond" or "Rafael"
located ad the bottom of the list.
On the right side, you have the "NBH Items". Click on the [...] button for "Splash".
An "Open" window pops up. Locate and select the .nb file that you just created.
Press [Build NBH!]
Type a file name and save!
This will create a .nbh file in the location you chosen. ((5-nb to nbh) folder by default)
goto Step 6.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 6: Flash your NEW Splash Screen!!!
-
I personally like to create a new folder for my newly created .nbh files.
In each folder I have my (*.nbh) and a copy of (RaphaelCustomRUU.exe).
In this way I can quickly flash which ever splash screen I want without any extra effort.
Create a folder. Place your new .nbh and a copy of RaphaelCustomRUU.exe in the folder.
Run RaphaelCustomRUU.exe, follow the instructions and you will have a new splash screen!
Enjoy! ;)

thanks HueMann very helpfull

Haret.exe Android Install and Boot from Windows Mobile

*Update: These instructions now seem to be outdated. I will started an updated thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648045
------------
(sorry I tried to post some live links, but the forum won't allow them cause I'm a new user, so this may not be as helpful as I hoped...)
I just spent some hours wading through the forums to find complete instructions for installing the newer android builds using the WM haret.exe linux booter (rather than flashing the entire phone and loosing WM) on my touch Vouge.
I am a bit of a newb, but since I did not find complete instructions, and had to figure some things out using trial and error I thought I would post what I did figure out here in hopes of helping others.
First ignore the install instructions here. sourceforge.net/apps/trac/androidhtc/wiki/HowToInstall . They are old and need to be updated.
Erase all previous android files from your sd card
Go here: sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/
haretinstall.zip
open the zip and place the andboot folder and all its contents on the / directory of your SD card
then download eclair252_androidinstall.zip
unzip eclair252_androidinstall.zip to get androidinstall.tar
copy androidinstall.tar to your sdcard /andboot folder
(unnecessarily steps deleted - see below)
Then on your phone's file explorer run haret.exe from /andboot folder on you sd card
click run and immediately hold the volume switch up as linux boots
the boot menu appears. choose install
if the installation hangs hold volume up again, and choose quit
As I said I'm new at this, so my instructions may be off or misguided. If so please post with corrections. I just know I was looking for a guide like this and couldn't find one so hope this helps someone.

Actually, you just answered my question (which I never posted) about NoRootFS.... Thanks for posting this!!!!
THANK YOU!!!
can you explain what is the benefits of doing it this way compared to the way its always been for me. it was as simple as downloading the sqsh package zip file from my favorite build here. witch included all the files i needed to run anroid. I copied the android folder from the zip file to the root of my sd card and simply ran haret exe. It used to be complicated but not now that most builds include all the basefiles needed for boot. I never had to hold any volume buttons or install anything. i probably look dumb for asking this.

Although I have not yet tried myself because I have a Polaris and WiFi is not yet working, my understanding is that NoMoRootFS makes more space available for the ROM and makes it easier for developers to roll out updates. In the thread for Myn's (most excellent) Warm Donut, there are several themes and updates that can only be applied to Rev2 if you have installed via NoMoRootFS.

correct. with the OP method, the .nbh file is just taking up space. you never need to do anything with a .nbh file if you are using haret. OP, please fix and I will add to my list of FAQs, otherwise very informative. thx.

Did didn't get past the Linux menu. It only ran for about 4 or 5 seconds then locked up. I had to soft reset to get my phone functioning again.
I did exactly what the instructions in the 1st post said to do.
Downloaded andboot file to \storage card\andboot
Downloaded androidinstall.zip & placed in the andboot file
Clicked haret.exe
Selected run while holding up the volume key
I read in the post that the below items were not necessary so I skipped them:then download vogueeclairnbh.zip
unzip vogueeclairnbh.zip to get VOUGIMGx480.NBH
copy VOUGIMGx480.NBH to your sdcard /andboot folder
I'm running stock rom. My carrier is nTelos (CDMA).
I notice that your rom version and radio version are not the latest. You may have to ungrade those before you can get it to run.

always good to have latest radio. i don't know if it will interfere with you booting linux, usually it creates problems with gps or data once you are in android. but who knows, anything is possible I suppose.
list the files that are in /sdcard/andboot/ emmie0702
I've always wanted to update me ROM but there is not a Server cab out there that will give me back my settings for nTelos. Its a small cell network therefore no one has bothered to create one (I really can't blame them). So I've never tried it out of fear of Bricking my phone. For some reason nTelos did not offer WiFi, GPS or MMS with this phone through their network (didn't know that until AFTER I bought it). They have it for other phones but not this one for some reason. That was a little annoying when I 1st got it but I've leaned to live without it. I love my phone even w/o those things. I get pics emailed to me & can email them to other's phone through their carrier address (eg [email protected]). WiFi would be nice but I never use GPS. As far as the Radio. I assume it sort of the same step. I pretty much have to install it & it will wipe out or "Hard Reset" my phone, right...causing me to losing all my network info?
Here are the files I have in the andboot folder:
androidinstall
default
haret
initrd
READE-BASEFILES
zImage
zImage-eclair
** I could not file the "eclair252_androidinstall.zip" file to download so I downloaded the androidinstall.zip under the "2010-01-05" folder from sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/. Could that be the problem or could it be a combination of my Radio/ROM & the androidinstall tar I downloaded?
Thanks for the help guys!
is it androidinstall.zip or androidinstall.tar?

I've always wanted to update me ROM but there is not a Server cab out there that will give me back my settings for nTelos. Its a small cell network therefore no one has bothered to create one (I really can't blame them). So I've never tried it out of fear of Bricking my phone. For some reason nTelos did not offer WiFi, GPS or MMS with this phone through their network (didn't know that until AFTER I bought it). They have it for other phones but not this one for some reason. you should be able to update your radio without touching your rom, there is a radio only version of 3.42.50, see the faqs noob guide to flashing, it is in there.
I am unsure what you downloaded; it looks like you have the right basefiles, but if you got androidinstall.zip from 2010-01-05 I don't think it will have anything compatible with the norootfs method, and is probably causing your problem.
delete androidinstall.tar, download this and drop the androidinstall.tar that is inside into your sdcard/andboot/ folder. then run haret and keep holding volume up until you see the install menu. then post back.

OK. Same thing...phone locks up at the same place. I downloaded the file you attached & downloaded the VOGUIMG.nbh file that was linked on PPCGeeks. I followed the instructions on PPCGeeks post "This is the vogue radio 3.42.50 designed for the vogue (this is not the titan port). I removed it directly from the bell rom and recomplied it as a radio only .nbh. This is a radio only rom designed to be flashed from bootloader from sd card and doesn't require a hard reset. Copy VOGUIMG.nbh to root of fat32 micro sd card 2gb or less and place phone in bootloader and it will run."
I still get the same outcome. Both your attachment & the VOGUIMG.nbh file are located \Storage Card\ on my phone. When the Radio instructions say its designed to be flashed from Bootloader what exactly does that mean? Do I need a program for that or is it suppose to start when I Run the default.txt after I select haret in the andboot folder?
the place you got the link to the radio only version also has instructions on how to flash your phone - see the before starting area. short: get into bootloader mode, then flash.
I still think there is something else that you are doing wrong, I just can't put my finger on it right now; i'm hoping others will be able to help.

OK. I figured out how to get it in bootloader mode (power button + camera + soft reset). The Red/Blue/Green screen pops up & then a Grey screen that says "loading...". Its been "loading" for over 5 minutes now. What could be the problem?

Instructions to create and load EVO splash screen

I know there are other methods out there for achieving the same thing. And I have touched on a few "after thoughts" in the actual process of loading the image to the phone. If these can be confirmed, please feel free to update these instructions. After browsing many, many pages in forum after forum I was unsuccessful in finding anything detailed enough from start to finish. So I decided to write this up!
These instructions work for anyone who rooted using the "UnrEVOked" method such as that given at HTCEvoHacks.com. I have not tested these instructions with any other root method out there.
With a bit of practice, this method can be mastered and done in about 20 minutes (depending on how long you spend creating your splash image in PhotoShop)
For the sake of these instructions, all references and instructions dealing with PhotoShop are assuming you are using PhotoShop CS5. Commands may be slightly different on older versions of PhotoShop, so it may take a few extra clicks to find what you're looking for.
1. You can download custom boot images from the web, or create your own in PhotoShop using ANY sort of photo, graphics, text, or combination. You MUST make sure that the image size is set as the same for the EVO's screen resolution (480x800). For this reason, I would double check any image file you try to use prior to converting it for use with your phone.
2. Open your image file in Photoshop and make whatever tweaks or enhancements you like. Remember to "flatten" the image prior to saving it out if you have multiple layers in your file. You can use the next step to re-size the image first if you like, but depending on your current settings in PS it should not matter.
3. Right click the file window (the one that contains your image) and set the "Image Size" settings to a width of 480, and the height to 800. These measurements MUST be in pixels as well. If you have the "Constrain Proportions" box checked, you may not be able to tweak these individually without affecting the other. So uncheck that box and change the size settings. Click ok to close the box and the image will re-size within Photoshop.
4. After you have finished creating your custom image, flattening the image, and resizing it to fit on your phone's screen, it is time to save the file. Navigate to the "file" menu and click "save as". Here, you can choose where to save it, name it, and choose the file format. It's probably easier to go ahead and save it as "splash" now, so that you wont have to rename it later. Either way, this file MUST be named "splash" when we are in the final stages. Save it as the "BMP" format, and you will get a pop-up window for the BMP options. "File Format" should be set to Windows... and choose the depth option of 24 Bit. The "compress" and "Flip row order" boxes should be unchecked, and you do not need to go into any advanced settings. Once you have saved the file, You can close PhotoShop.
Now the File needs to be converted from the BMP format into an IMG file. This is so that the boot loader in your phone will see it when you flash it to your phone.
There are a few conversion tools out there, but I have found Splash Screen Creator to be the EASIEST way to convert the file with a few clicks.
The link to download this small program is here... http://www.addictivetips.com/?attachment_id=43073 ... and it is FREE!!! (I did not create this program)
1. Download the .zip package from the link above.
2. Extract the files. I found that creating a folder on my desktop to secure these files (and these files only) to be less of a headache.
3. After you have extracted the files, you are ready to convert your "splash.bmp" file. You MUST move this file into the same directory that you unzipped the Splash Screen Creator to. It will only find the bmp file in the same directory, which is why having its own folder is easier. Move your "splash.bmp" file to the same folder and open "RUN THIS ONE". This will open the program in a command prompt.
4. Choose option 1 to convert your existing .bmp file into the required .img file. The next option will ask if you would like to flash the file to your phone. This option is not necessary for these instructions, but I have read of others being successful. You can try this option, but if it fails, go on to the remaining steps.
5. Go ahead and close the program by pressing another key to exit. You should see your new "Splash.img" file in this same directory. Rename this as "splash1.img"
Now that I think of it, naming the BMP file to "splash1" prior to converting to the .img format may solve the error when trying to flash the file to the phone
within Splash Screen Creator. The img file MUST be name "splash1" prior to updating it in the boot loader in the next steps so it makes sense that the program would come up with an error at this point. I have not tested this theory at this time, but you are welcome to. If someone does test this, please update these instructions
to save from many unnecessary steps below!
Your next steps require access to your original "PC36IMG.zip" file that you used during your root process. If you do not have your original "PC36IMG.zip" file, you
can try to download one here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8913849&postcount=156 ... I have not tested this file yet, but worth a shot if you dont have it.
1. Make a COPY of your "PC36IMG.zip" file and move it to your directory where you have worked with the custom splash files. This saves from getting confused between files and flashing the wrong one to your phone. You're also making a copy so that your original "PC36IMG.zip" file is NOT altered.
2. DO NOT unzip the file! Simply drag your "splash1.img" file over to your zipped "PC36IMG.zip" folder and copy it in there. If you get a prompt to overwrite an existing "splash" file, go ahead. Afterall, you are working with a copy of the PC36IMG.zip.
3. After you have added the "splash1.img" file into the "PC36IMG.zip" folder, you can now move the zipped folder over to your sd card. Make sure that it is the ONLY copy on your sd card, and that you have not placed it in any other directories. BOOT LOADER WILL NOT FIND IT IF IT IS IN ANOTHER FOLDER!!!
4. AT THIS POINT YOU WANT TO BE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR ROM!!!! YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CURRENT ROM AND DATA AFTER THE NEXT STEP!!!!
5. Reboot the phone into Boot loader by holding the volume down button and pressing power. The boot loader will find your "PC36IMG.zip" and ask you if you want to update. Press the volume up button to say YES! Grab a coffee, chug a beer, or take a piss, cause this step takes a few minutes.
6. Once the boot loader has finished it's update, reboot your phone. it will now display your new custom splash screen!!! (but you're not done yet)
Because you updated your "PC36IMG.zip" files in the boot loader, you have in effect re-flashed the stock rom (rooted of course) back to your phone.
Allow a few minutes for your phone to boot up, log into your g-mail account (so that you have access to the market), and download Rom Manager (or your favorite backup manager), and restore back to your rom!
Like I said before, I have only done this on the HTC EVO that has been rooted using UnrEVOked through the process explained on HTCEVOHacks.com. I have no idea if this process will work with other configurations, and I accept no responsibility for the outcome of your actions!!!!
cool bro thanks
Thanks very helpful
