Hey guys - just wanted to create a little poll to see who leaves there screen on auto-brightness, full, or manually controlled but somewhere in the middle.
I use auto, but I use tasker and screen filter to turn the brightness automatically at night.
Auto-Brightness unless I read in a dark room where I manually set it to the minimum (auto usually puts it there anyways). The other exception is when battery is low, I put it at 0% or whatever minimum allows me to see something.
I'll submit a vote when I can indicate minimal brightness. More than bright enough for me unless I'm outdoors.
i usually leave it on min. brightness and turn it up when needed (e.g. outdoors)
i like SGS to be set on auto, it works better than on the SNS
on the SNS i need to set it to manual
I use auto mostly and manual ( 0% brigness ) when watching movies in my room )
I'm at minimum most of the time (voted 'at the middle' as it is the closest).

i cannot vote as i leave mine on minimum brightness to conserve battery
Almost always at minimum, and often auto when outside.
Minimum being too bright I also sometimes use Screen Filter.
There should be an option to use auto, but choose relative brightness (an offset). Using Screen Filter almost does that, but it is too unstable.
Even beter would be to be able to tweak a response curve : screen brightness in function of ambient light (I want it dimmer inside, but still full brightness outside with sunshine)
I think Samsung does not allow screen to be too dim also because it then shows too much imperfections in amoled...(ex. plain white is not uniform at all)
Using Screen Filter to dim a lot brings bad looking screen. But I guess a great part of it is due to number of colors too low, so you loose too much by filtering. Maybe Gingerbread will improve in this matter (doesn't it manage more color shades?)

I use auto most of the time, except for image viewing and video.
I use JustPictures as my image viewer and set it to automatically turn brightness to full when looking at an image.
For videos I use mVideoPlayer which has a manual brightness override which I usually leave at about 50%.
I also use the Speedmod kernel which allows the brightness to go even lower than normal if you use manual brightness. I use this low setting when using my phone in the dark.
I just got my Asus tf701t and, while first using it, the home and back buttons did not work in portrait mode and the screen would change brightness at varying time intervals (usually a few seconds) when the brightness was set very low. an update to 4.3 cured the back and home button issue but the screen still can't stay at one brightness level when I set it to very dim. It's not changing dramatically, more like a few percent, but enough to be distracting.
The odd part is that the dimming/brightening issue almost seems application dependent. It occurs far more often in the home screen or skout but almost never when playing shadowgun dead zone or when using naked browser.
Does anyone else have similar issues?

I don't have the flickering when not on auto and lowest setting.
However some apps can dimm the screen while loading.
On the TF700 the stock browser did that when loading a page but on the TF701 the brightness doesn't do that.
You have an ambient light sensor built into the device. It adjusts the brightness based on the lighting in your environment. It can't be turned off either.

It can't be turned off? So when you turn on automatic brightness it just changes the brightness more drastically? This doesn't sound right.
Based on the other poster's response, I think I need to return this unit. The screen dimming/brightening happens to often and randomly to be part of my apps and I even noticed, in some apps, that just touching the screen causes a brightness change.
Even if this is by design, it is far too distracting.

My 701 is doing this as well. Turned off auto brightness, turned off power saver, rebooted. When it comes back up the device acts like auto brightness is on, with screen brightness fluctuaating randomly. Turning power saver on and off again seems to solve it, but that behavior is very annoying - it's why I turn auto brightness off in the first place.
US SKU running 4.3 installed via ota, no root or unlock or anything - straight stock. Its also my second device, my original had a bad cable and wouldn't charge. Serial number ends in 072259.

I also tried turning power saver mode on and off and for me it seemed to improve the situation but not eliminate it. I am going to return the tablet and wait for the nexus 10.
Ugh, mine has been doing this, too. Can't believe there isn't a setting somewhere...

I'm quite convinced it's a software "feature" but currently there seems to be no way to turn it off?
It's one of those "Adjust brightness of the screen based on content" or "Changing LCD refresh rate and colors for power saving" but sadly it does it the wrong way around (This has been going on for a while now, manufacturers don't really get it). When there is a lot of bright content the brightness will rise and when there is mostly a dark screen it will fall.
Of course, this should happen exactly the other way around. When there is a lot of bright/white on my screen it should lower and when there is mostly black it should become brighter thus giving you more contrast but keeping the overall lux that comes off your screen the same...... My Intel graphics notebook does this too and it's very irritating. There they do it by manipulating the LCD screen and lowering the refresh rate and other tricks to save battery. First thing I turned off.
However way it goes though, you should be able to turn it off!

I'm having the same issue. I think it's the smart dimmer option Asus have used before but they forgot to include it in the Asus customised options. I'll have a dig through the ROM to see where it is stored.

It is very annoying when reading magazines that have a lot of white background. My screen will be stable for minutes then, often on a touch, will change the screen brightness, seemingly by 5-20%.
I was just getting ready to return it, and thought I would check here to see of anyone else has this problem. Has any actually called Asus with this complaint? I would be interested to know if they see this as a hardware defect, software bug, or working as designed.
PS - I just placed a technical support request about this on the Asus Website. Here is my problem description:
Even with automatic brightness & power saving turned off, the brightness of the screen will change over time, often seemingly in response to a touch. (Reading Mode is Off as well.)
The period between changes can vary from several minutes to 30 seconds. It happens both while docked and undocked. It happens with apps and just at the launcher.
The amount of brightness change is 5-20% and it will often seem to step through some values before it stops at a particular one.
Given how fantastic looking the screen is, this unwanted fluctuation is particularly annoying.
I also own a TF201 and have not experienced this problem on that product.

I have this issue too but not a real biggie as the connection problems between dock and tablet.

I heared a lot of people say I about this, but happily I seem to don't have it or I don't detect it. What is this dock problem about?
I suspect this is the same "smart dimming" feature that the 700 had.

Yep me too and as soon as I root I'm going to see if the same fix will turn it off
There seems to be no way to disable this. Some believe it's the light sensor, but I've taped over mine with black electrical tape and tested and I don't see any difference in the behavior. Check our my Youtube video if you are a user who doesn't see the issue (look for threads in this same XDA forum).
I've finally been able to get someone at Asus to look into this and it's been sent to TW for review. I haven't heard anything back yet. I strongly recommend that other people who are annoyed by this (I find it tremendously distracting) to search on "asus escalation" which will bring up a special mailbox. Here is the link (although I do not know if the link will work for you). This should get looked at by someone with at least some ability beyond reading a script. If enough people do this, I think that they will fix it. Since you can temporarily override it by toggling smart saver on/off, it has to be fixable by software.

I returned my tf701, waited for cyber Monday, and bought the Samsung note 2014 since the nexus 10 2 is so elusive. I put in an escalation request anyway and included a link to this thread in my complaint.

I also saw this issue on my TF701. This seems a "feature" of Tegra SoC
I've recently bought the 9.7" version of the Tab S2. I was aware of how unrealistic and oversaturated the AMOLED display is on default setting, but luckily this can be turned off, so it was the very first thing i did (though now the white balance is off, but at least it is not oversaturated).
Unfortunately i wasn't aware the fact that the display at below ~75% brigthtness flickers. The lower the brightness the more disturbing it is. And it drives me crazy. I hate the flickering cheap cr*p LED light bulbs, i hate that most notebook screens with LED backlight are non PWM free, and are flickering And after having this tablet for three days, i am hating it too. I frankly believe these products should be banned, because it hurts your eye, and your brain. I thought when we said good bye to CRT monitors, flickering screens will never be an issue again. Unfortunately they are :/
After googling the internet i found this article gs5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/eliminate-screen-flicker-lower-minimum-brightness-android-0157760 but the solution unfortunately requires a rooted device, wich would trip the knox and void the warranty, so it's a no no for me. Then I found several other apps on the play store which are doing the same without requiring root access: drawing a black overlay over the screen and you can set the transparency of it, so you can get a lower brightness without the flickering, because your screen brightness is around maximum, the lowered transparcy of the black overlay makes it less bright. Unfortunately none of these apps work like the one for the rooted devices, wich has a second slider at status bar, so instead of the brightness you can change the transparency at the notification screen. The non rooted apps i found do not work this way, they don't have the extra slider, you need to tap them, so you can get to where you can change the trasnparency and that's very uncomfortable. I tried so far Darker and three other Screen Filter apps, but none of them works with a second slider :/ Also using the Screen Filter apps when there is a smooth color transition on the dipslay (default background picture for example) gives ugly end result. Using a Screen filter app might reduce battery life so i might need to charge it more often (i don't care), but since the display is not flickering, it is always on, it might will burn in faster (i do care, i intend to use this tablet for 3+ years) So i am currently in debate wether i should return this product and get my money back or not. It is a really great device, but this terrible flickering of the AMOLED screen makes me super unhappy, wish it had an IPS display :/

It's not an S2 issue, I've seen several other phones and tablets in low light conditions set to a low brightness flickering like mine.. But you can test it, set a low brightness and start waving your finger in front of the screen like crazy. If you see ~10 seperate fingers -like in the picture attached- instead of one blurry (what you should see if there was a constant backlight), than yours is flickering too.

I see what you mean, but it doesn't bother me as there is no perceivable flickering at all and it only happens when the brightness is below a certain level.
If that certain level would be around 20% brightness i wouldn't care. I haven't tested out yet, but that certain level is somewhere below 70% So -for me- it would flicker all the time.
Eh, there is no screen flickering but your finger is flickering over a light source aka *screen*. It's an optical illusion you are referring to.
I am also very sensitive to pwm on displays, it takes me less than a minute to feel sick from the display having pwm.
Any further solutions to this? Thank you.
I'm using the the app 'Night Screen' it does the job on Android 7.0 on my LG G6 which uses pwm under 35% of brightness even though this is an ips screen. Hope it helps.

Thanks for answering this 3 years old post I used Darker in the last three years to eliminate the flckering and was happy with it. I checked OLED Saver now, but it's permissions says to me it's a big no no.
Unfortunately, since Android 8 apps cannot draw a an overlay over system areas (notification bar etc., thanks google! ), so i guess i'll never have an OLED screen phone/tablet again.

First my question - Is there a way to prevent the Note 8 from entering the RED area of the screen brightness slider when in Auto Brightness mode?
Now my reasons for this question, should you care of course
I am a quite devoted Pokemon Go player for over a year now, which has lead to a significant screen burn-in on my previous S7 Edge. Now with Note 8 I am more careful in how I play the game. I have started by making the game run is immersive mode, I tend to deliberately switch between apps to prevent same game elements stay on for too long and finally, I am using the phone with the screen as dim, as possible without causing me difficulties to see it.
HOWEVER, I would like to use Auto Brightness as it actually learns my preferences quite well with one exception - whenever it sees a direct sun beam, it automatically boosts into the red zone, even is the bright light has been there for a second. OK, I admit that the screen brightness is amazing in direct sunlight, staying saturated and crisp and also the system's reaction to a spray of bright light is really fast, except for the fact that...I don't want it.
It's not about saving my battery, I have a 20 000 mAh battery pack always with me. I only want to prevent my screen from burn in and overall degrading faster than normally.

i suppose there is memory function, when u drag the slider back to the illumination level of ur choice, it remembers the next time and limits the brightness. some amount of patience is needed till the system 'learns'

Yes indeed, some time is needed for the system to fully learn the preferences
I am experiencing automatic dimming of my screen when set to maximum. The big thing is Adaptative Brightness is Off. I also set Power Mode to High Performance to make sure power management would not dim. I even bought an app that supposedly cranck up brightness beyond system limits (did not work)
I first noticed this when taking pictures of my garden in bright daylight, the screen was dim and even going over the orange marker on the dial I still struggled to view the screen (sun was almost 90 degree angle).
However when I placed my hand over the screen I could see well but then I noticed a sensible dim. At first I thought it was some king of optical trick, so I tried to repeat the experiment in different conditions to the point that I would simply crank up brightness and have a strong light over my phone then I used a black sheet of paper just above sensors. If I take the sheet off the brightness ramp up a bit, if I put the sheet over the screen dims. And again no auto Adaptative Brightness is turned on neither Power Mode in save.
I guess this wasn't supposed to happen, if I want to ramp up brightness as much as I want I should be allowed and the system should not interfere with my preference? I don't need to justify my use to anyone but as a courtesy to those that are inclined to help me, here it is: I work a lot with gardening and construction all day, including strong daylight, and I need to take a lot of pictures for my work.
What can I do to squeeze this bit more brightness from my Note 9?

Try the the twilight blue app filter. It works wonders with the bulb features on your phone
