Bootloader mode: To access this mode, turn off the SGS, and then press VOL UP + HOME pressed while pressing Power. Then you will enter recovery mode.
In recovery mode you can wipe the system and you can flash a file named update.zip (if you have installed a such file in the root directory of the internal memory). These update.zip files are usually made to root or modify the SGS, and if you want to install a custom ROM, it might be necessary.
If you have installed another recovery image, the bootloader/recovery menu might have some extra features, i.e. nandroid backup and access to other settings.
Download mode: To access this mode, turn off the SGS, take out SIM and SD card, then press VOL DOWN + HOME pressed while pressing Power. Then you will enter recovery mode. Then the phone will say "downloading", and then you should connect the USB cable to a PC running the Odin firmware tool. Read more about Odin and firmwares on samfirmware DOT com
Disclaimer: Not every SGS has this 3-buttom combo - if not, search forum for "3-buttom combo fix"
Hope this helps you.

Hi Sparkle1975, I've searched the forums and read many times what you have copied and pasted.
In your answer you say that Bootloader mode is Recovery Mode.
(Bootloader mode: To access this mode, turn off the SGS, and then press VOL UP + HOME pressed while pressing Power. Then you will enter recovery mode.)
Within the app Quickboot it offers the options of reboot, recovery, bootloader and power off. Recovery and Bootloader appear to be different options.

Just in case anyone else has the same problem as me:
For me VOL UP works, so I can get in to update mode, but VOL DOWN (download mode) does not work. If I enter update mode, then hold power until it reboots, quickly presses VOL DOWN+HOME (but not power) it enters download mode.
A few more steps, but it works.
Official swedish 2.3.3 firmware in mine.
Edit: This was tested a few times with the SIM and SD out. I haven't tried it with them in.

[Q] Is there a difference between 'download' & 'recovery' mode?

When I hold both the volume buttons and press the power button, I am calling that 'recovery' mode. Is 'download' mode something different? If so, how do I get into download mode?
Yes, download mode will display a big yellow triangle with the android robot in the middle.
In download mode you can't do anything. Odin3 send files to the phone and all other commands.
I'm not sure if once in "download mode" you can boot back without flashing your phone...
To get into download mode you power off the phone (You can remove the battery to be sure) then plug the phone into USB. Let the battery screen show up, then do your key press (Volume up + Volume down + Power) hold all three until the third black screen (immediately black, battery, black, battery, black) then let go of power. That should give you the big yellow Android shovelling the crap.

Just yank the battery out. As long as nothings flashing onto the phone or anything (the blue progress bar isn't showing) then you should be fine. At least in my experience.
Yes there is.
Recovery Mode is where you would load an update.zip file. Two ways to access: 1. from adb type: adb reboot recovery 2. Power and both volume button method.
Download Mode is where you would load roms and kernels with Odin. Multiple ways to access, two easiest IMO: 1. if adb is available type: adb reboot download 2. Pull battery and usb, Install battery, hold down both volume buttons, keep buttons held and plug in usb cable. Dont touch the power button.
That is correct, if you havent flashed anything just battery pull and reboot to get out of download mode. Also if you botch a flash and your phone is frozen, when you reset the phone will go into a bricked mode that will show a phone, warning sign and computer. If your phone does this you'll need to do a battery pull and manually enter download mode reflash.
diff btw download and recovery mode

yes there is a difference between download and recovery mode
"download mode"
is that where you can able to install custom or stock roms or you can flash your android in this mode
but in
"recovery mode"
you have some commands given by phone you can use these command for reboot your android or reset to factory and other commands

If you flash darkys rom you can access recovery and download mode by using the power button, like when you get the option to either power off or reboot. Don't know if thats any help but i said i'll truy.
Thanks for reply.
But if you can boot, you have adb access, and it is easy to reboot into recovery ("adb reboot recovery").
The problem is that I just "corrupt" my rom and I can't boot. My phone just loop over boot screen.
I can boot into "download mode" and flash with odin. But I would boot in recovery and flash with an "update.zip". That why I want to know if I can have an "adb" access or other access throught download mode (and reboot into recovery).

[Q] Crashed after Cognition ROM 217 install

Had the cognition 216 ROM installed and working. Then tried to install the cognition 217 unhelpful ROM. It failed during the install of the files. Now I am unable to get the phone into download mode. It will go back into recovery mode. I have tried all the button combos for download mode. All I get is the battery image. Any help would be appreciated.

Which button combos did you try for download mode? Since you see the battery image, I believe you should be able to get back to download mode.
if it will go into recovery mode, then it will go into download mode....
method 3 in the ONE CLICK ODIN STOCK ROM thread....

Method 3KEY COMBO)
Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
Insert the battery
Hold both Volume buttons (from i9000 just down, don't touch the power button)
Plug in the USB cable and continue holding both Volume buttons

holding the volume buttons down. It goes to the battery image. I will try again and see if I get different results. Took out the battery, no sim, pushed in the center of volume button, boots into recovery screen.
I can get the phone into the recovery screen no problem. Using the volume buttons does not get me into download mode. If I hold the volume bottons, it still boots into the recovery screen.

on the table of contents, click post 3: adb tutorial and follow the instructions on there until you get to where the command prompt says something like "\android-sdk-windows\tools\", plug your phone in through usb while it is recovery mode and in the command prompt type "adb reboot download" and unplug your phone immediately after the screen goes black. it will then boot into download mode, so open odin on your computer, for whatever you want to flash, plug the phone back in, and click start on odin.
edit: fixed the url
That got it. Was not aware that you could still use the SDK at this point. It is restoring from ODIN. Many thanks.

[Q] can't root and can't enter recovery mode

hi all!
i have a problem with my samsung galaxy next.
I'm not able anymore to enter in recovery mode and also to root it (i have also tried to root it via pc).
If i try to enter in recovery mode (vol up+home+power) the phone says "ramdump mode".
Another problem is that if i try to restore factory settings the phone reboot in recovery mode showing some error and it doesn't restore factory settings.
I can just reload stock rom via odin :crying:
I would change rom, with the stock one the battery draining is unbearable.
the problem with the recovery mode came after i came back to stock rom (i have tried mod rom).
Try vol down+home+power. It will work.
EDIT: Oops this is the download mode! As other guys telling Home+Power only.

Turn off your phone, Hold your Power and Home button at the same time, when the Samsung logo comes up, release the power button BUT keep holding your HOME button. Then go Wipe data/factory reset, it's the same thing.
"Press "thanks" if I helped you "

You don't go into recovery by holding volup+home+power buttons. You go into recovery mode by holding only Home+Power buttons.

Problem with Download Mode

Long story short, I have the I8190L version of the phone, currently on stock ROM. I got the phone a few weeks ago and I have rooted it right away, there were no problems while rooting, I used the Galaxy S3 mini toolkit and used the "Flash Insecure Boot Image and Root device" option, with SuperSU 1.25. Fast forward to right now, I want to install CyanogenMod, so I went and tried to boot my phone into Download Mode, to try and flash CWM recovery in order to install the Cyanogen ROM, but I simply can't start download mode, when connected to the USB pressing the Vol up + menu + power sequence, the phone just starts normally (The OS will load completely). adb reboot download doesn't work too, vol up + vol down + power and plugging in the usb cable doesn't work.. I did several hard resets and I removed root too, noone of those worked. I don't know if that is relevant, but I installed a patched google play (4.1.10 Chelpus version), I could not find a way to remove that. I can't reroot too because I would need to start my phone in download mode. Anyone knows what is happening?

are you connecting your phone to PC before you go to download-mode???
try this: download-mode (Vol up + Menu + Power) and now connect your device with your computer!
flash CWM or whatever you want...

That did not work, when it is about to go to download mode it seems that it fails and either boots the OS or just turns off (depends on how much I hold the buttons), and since adb reboot download doesn't work I think something got corrupted (adb finds the device and reboots it, but it just starts up normally).
I'm not sure why, but noone of the articles I read mentioned the actual CORRECT download mode sequence, which is: Volume Down + Home + Power buttons, and then click on Volume Up, it is working now. Thanks.

Well if you looked at the screen you would know what to press after vol down+home+power
oh my God,
you are all right.
i mixed up step one and two of Download-Mode - sorry
first you have to push Vol Down + Menu + Power (few seconds)
start odin as admin
second you connect your device to PC
third you push Vol Up
fourth you flash via Odin.
I often flash ROMs via Odin and / or use CWM so that works automatically ....
