Hi,
I wanted to know if there is any way to run a different OS on this phone that supports all of the hardware.
I love the specs of this phone - and the form factor, however, it doesn't matter which ROM I use, the phone is just so unbearably slow. Even with the light ROMs.
I simply hate Windows Mobile. The processor is not that slow - it should be able to do plenty - but everything takes 3 seconds at least to open. I've missed an inordinate number of phone calls just because the stupid send button takes 10 seconds to respond.
Is there any option at all to forgo a WM ROM and use a different OS entirely?
How can I take advantage of the amazing hardware - but not be dragged down by the software?
HELP!
Moved as not ROM Development.
Try flashing stock then ROM, changing Hard-SPL.. etc.
Never had problem with slow OS unless the ROM is an issue to which is very uncommon..
If it really takes 10 seconds to get the phone to answer a call...
One thing to check is memory -- Do you have a lot of stuff in your calls list or MMS texts? Clear them out.
Which ROMS have you tried? Any 6.1 or 6.5s?
There is no other usable OS now -- Android is getting close but it won't work with all the phone's components

The last ROM I flashed that's exactly what I did - I flashed to a stack ROM - changed the Hard SPL.
The ROM I love - Shifu did a phenomenal job - but after a while - everything just begins to lag...and it's not just this ROM - it's every ROM. After a few weeks - everything just starts to miss a beat and then slowly unravel.
I'm surprised that you've never had any problems with the OS - the consensus is that WM is a generally slow OS - I just thought maybe there's a way to take advantage of the great hardware in the phone without having to use this OS.
Thanks for the advice though.
If you have any other suggestions - they would be much appreciated.

Maybe not 10 seconds - but I have missed plenty of calls because the phone was completely unresponsive.
I do have a LOT of SMS' - maybe that's it. I just flashed to a new ROM (jjblaster3's 6.5) - it's great for now. I hope it stays that way. But they all start off great...you start installing a few programs and then nothing moves.
Thanks for the SMS/call history advice - I'll start clearing out now.
Anything else you can think of would be great.
I went through similar problems. Currently I am using the ROM "forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428261". This was the best ROM that I tested for my Kaiser.
I was not very fan of windows mobile too, because that i installed android at sdcard and recently found a very good application "forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623792" to streamline the boot process for the android, without having to wait for the windows mobile start and then boot the android. Android is fantastic, but as has already been said not everything works. The GPS and camera are the major problems yet.
Thanks

Thanks for the advice - I'm not going to head down the Android route yet...but I will check out the ROM you suggested. Have you tried any 6.5 ROMs you liked? I'm running jjblaster3 6.5 v2 right now.
Well personally, I like the STAXXX STYLE ROMs...they are 6.5.3...and VERY fast in my opinion.
ROM Suggestions
Thanks for the suggestion, any ROM recommendations would be much appreciated, here is what I'm looking for:
1) A fast ROM
2) No bugs with common things like text messages, bluetooth, WiFi, Internet
3) Good battery life
4) And if possible - 6.5 - but not mandatory
I know a LOT of hard work goes into cooking the ROMs, so I'm not complaining - but I've found that there are always small bugs that are real deal breakers for me.
I've tried:
1) AthineOS Manila Edition
Text issues, backlight issues
2) Shifu (3.2)
Text issues, screen rotation issues, wifi issues, phone got stuck a lot towards the end (had to soft reset twice a day at times)
3) Jjblaster3 v2
Battery life (very poor - need to charge twice a day) - because there is no easy way to switch between 3G and GPRS (any quick fix for this?)

I have actually already downloaded that one - so as soon as my battery is more than 50% - I'll flash.
Thanks!
Do you know of anything to look out for bug-wise?

No bugs reported so far
I see in the Dev forum that the first RC1 of Cyanogenmod 7 for Milestone is available, but when I go to download it here, it doesn't seem to be available. I guess it would be called update-cm-7.0.0-RC1-0.07-11.02.18-Milestone-signed.zip but that last one available was the 11.02.15 release. Does anyone know whether the RC1-7.0.0-11.02.18 has been withdrawn for some reason?
I've been testing each and every build with good success, so I'm really keen to try the new one. I would ask in the dev forum, but I'm relatively new at the XDA forum and am therefore not eligible to post in it.

Well, I eventually found the correct download link at https://github.com/downloads/nadlabak/android/update-cm-7.0.0-RC1-0.07-11.02.18-Milestone-signed.zip
Thanks,

How is it working out so far? I've recently just started using cm6 but I don't want to install too much / get invested in it if CM7 is solid enough to use day 2 day.

I would stick with cm6 for now. CM7 could use many improvements and as of now is very memory hungry (I was on the feb.10 release). CM7, however, has many bug fixes that are not implemented in cm6, for example, the wifi fix (wasn't working with some n routers before I think [depending on the security type or something] ) and it seems as though there is also the random freeze + random reboot fix (using another, older kernel) I would not switch to CM7, until many bugs are fixed. Also some games don't work.

It's great. But video playing not working for me.
So I installed CM7 to try it out, and on RC1 my videos play fine (widescreen) using the included "Video" app. Well most of them do, one of them is displayed 4:3 for some reason?
I'm finding that it works quite well. Battery life is good, but there are a few bugs that need working out. CM6 is probably better if you need your phone to be 100% reliable, but I like to push the boundaries and play around.
Bugs or missing features so far:
- Button lights and keyboard backlight not working properly for me (and at least one other user here)
- Auto backlight brightness not working for me at all
- Volume button swapping/remapping not yet implemented, so that in lanscape mode left means louder (which is the wrong way round for me)
- Memory usage is a problem, so that Launcher pro keeps having to re-initialise
- Camera is VERY unreliable
- Getting random reboots and lockups, especially in Google Maps
Still, things are getting better with every release and I can always go back to CM6 if I want, since I made a Nandroid backup in OpenRecovery before I installed the CM7 update. I've just installed the RC2 update, so lets see how that goes...

Dear all,
it is my first try to run cyanogenmod (10.1 Rel 7) on my SGS+. But when using it, I immediately found plenty of issues:
- Navigation is only partially working. After a while the maps starts jumping around and dark semi transparent overlay sections appear so that one cannot see the full map. In the forum I found the hint to deactivate Dithering. Done. Only little improvement.
- Alarm clock is not working when the phone is turned off.
- Screen goes off after dialing a number (workaround: lift phone to the ear and lower it back down -> screen is on again).
- No FM radio app (in comparison to the stock rom).
- Skype video is still upside down (as with stock rom).
My colleagues were very enthusiastic about cyanogen mod. In contrast, I haven't really detected the advantages. Are the developpers still working on the issues? Is there anything I can do to support you guys?
To answer your queries:
-Navigation- use the bug reporting method on the CM10.1 forums and submit it as a bug report either in the S CM10.1 thread or on JIRA. More details are given in the CM10.1 thread OP.
-This feature doesn't work even on stock. Its not a bug, and its not just CM10.1. MIUI allows this apparently however.
-This is normal, not a bug either. When you call someone the screen goes off because you're going to lift it to your ear anyway. The 'workaround' is actually the proximity sensor, and a similar thing happens on stock roms. The only solution to this is to press a button when the screen initially turns off.
-FM Radio isn't included in CM builds by default, as the API needed for it needs some intense changes made to it. There's Spirit FM if you want to run the risk. Check out the thread for more information.
-Skype on CM10.x is a known issue
Try CM10.2 and see if that helps the first issue, if not, report it using the methods in the CM threads. Otherwise everything else is as normal/known.

Irrespective of a few bugs there are definitely a number of advantages to using CM.
Have you noticed how smooth CM10.1 is? For me it's smoother than stock. Definitely a plus.
The pre-installed applications are more polished/work better and you actually have control over them. Don't like one? You can remove it. Unlike stock where you are stuck with a lot of junk (unless you have rooted your phone).
Bugfixes! We're no longer stuck with a 2 year old version of an OS for which we don't receive any bugfixes.
Customizability. CM gives you a lot more features to have your phone just the way you want it.
Overclocking and undervolting.
Not everyone had this problem, but my phone took > 5 minutes to get a GPS fix on stock. It takes < 10 seconds on CM.
And that's just what I came up with in a few minutes. Yes, there will be a few bugs and features which you think are weird (like the screen turning off when you make a call) but you'll find that on any piece of software. If you personally feel CM is a downgrade then it's your right to think so and go back to stock ROM. That doesn't mean the average xda-user is going to agree with you though.
(I think there are also a few ROMs based on the stock 2.3.6 versions, but since I've never used them I wouldn't know which ones are worth trying.)
I have been using CM11 for a while now and I am experiencing frequents hangs and hiccups. In particular the systems doesn't seem to be able to handle an installation, what I mean is that whenever I install or update an app the system hangs like if it can't handle a multitasking session, the systems freezes. Also, I ofent have my device frozen and I can't turn it on, the screen stays black for long periods, in the order of 5 minuts or more. I'd say this ROM is not functional. Is there anyone else who is experiencing the same problems? I am not sure whether the ROM is not working properly because of some setting I changed but well... I was thinking about going back to stock or to re-format and start over with a fresh CM11 because it might also be that I did something wrong. Any comment or suggestion, personal experiences? is CM11 working on your xperia sp's?

It did start lagging after a few weeks and for me the recent button took forever (3 secs ! thats a lot since it never took that much long) to open recent menu. So I reinstalled it not knowing whether it was my fault or CM and to my surprise after a few weeks it did it again and I switched to PAC rom. Never looked back. IMO pac rom is the best experience of kitkat on sp.
Hello guys,
I've been testing all lolipop roms that had listed everything as working. Such as crDroid, CandyRom, SlimLP. On every of those lolipop roms pretty much most of the important stuff worked. There were stuff like equalizer not working or too dim notification LED, but from time to time I got touchscreen freezes. I mean I could use phone for a couple hours and then the touchscreen would freeze really often, sometimes it froze for couple of seconds and that was it and sometimes it could last for 10 minutes. This is really annoying and unacceptable if developer says that the touchscreen works.
I ended up contacting crDroid developer - davidteri81 and he said that the touchscreen works fine for him. I asked in the thread and I got only a single response saying he doesn't have this issue, but the sensivity is too high.
I've tried like literally 4 lolipop roms on my Z1 and each one of them had those touchscreen freezes. I even ended up flashing liquidsmooth in which I didn't had this issue, or it just didnt had the chance to happen since most stuff doesn't work there and it isn't usable as a daily driver so I quickly got rid of it.
My question here is:
Do you get touchscreen freezes? Please reply only after minimum 24h of usage. If you don't have any touchscreen freezes on lolipop rom on the Z1 then please, tell me what Lolipop rom do you use as I couldn't find any that wouldn't have a buggy touchscreen.
Please tell me if it works for you without issues or do you also have this issue on the Z1 as I'm puzzled because it couldn't be just me since I did a full phone wipe, flashed the phone clean, even wiping internal memory, but it still happens and I cant find a way to use any Lolipop rom everyday on my Z1. The more replies I get, the better.
@olokos: I'm on CM12 official and use it now for many days. In this time I never faced any touch freezes on my Z1.
I've got some other "bugs" that confused me a bit and make some manual fixes like Wi-Fi MAC. But for me I can say that this ROM is really stable and I use it as my daily driver.

Same for me, although, the touch screen did freeze once, but I locked it and unlocked it and it worked again. It's probably hardware since I got my Z1 replaced because of this issue that even happened on stock ROM occasionally.
using CandyRom 5.0.2
I never faced any touch freezes issue
@olokos: I'm on 20150214 and now I've got touchscreen freezes. This is the first time for me on Z1.
But I think that this could be a global Cm12 issue, because my Nexus 7 also get some freezes and I thought that something is wrong with my fingers or tempered glass.
The problem is how to debug this?
im on candy 5 and my screen dont freeze, but my screen percieves touches from nowhere... but only if i have earphone plugged in .. thats more than just annoying
anyone has the same prob?
sry for my really bad english
Touchscreen freezing issue definitely isn't hardware issue on custom roms. I haven't tried CM12 or any other apart from those listed on XDA, but I will propably build some lolipop rom from source by myself if I get enough reports that will be useful for me. If touchscreen works for you then please, tell me what rom you are using and for how long you use it, what't the way you flashed it.
I only need those 3 things. If touchscreen doesn't work just for me then I'll build my own stock based rom based on Sony sources. I just have to make sure that the touchscreen issue isn't just on my side.
All I need is:
Do you have touchscreen issues? Yes/no
What ROM/Kernel you are using? CandyRom 5.0
For how long? 5 weeks
Answer those 3 questions, legitimately and I'll consider that. I'm not sure If I'll have enough time to work on this, so please, be honest with your answers because I'm not going to fix the touchscreen, or maybe I will if it doesn't happen for everyone.
I experience dramatic touch screen freezes as well since the first time I installed Lollipop nightlies. (4 weeks now). Tried clearing cache, factory restores, de- and reinstalling apps. Reflash kernel, format SD, reinstalling gapps, puzzeling at logcat logs etc. Nothing helps. Random freezes from seconds till minutes. Only thing that 90% of the time will help is keep pressing powerbutton until screen becomes responsive. It happens more when I have a lot of (hangout or whatsapp) notifications, or when trying to type something (stock keyboard). Tried other keyboards: no luck. Tried every toggle: WiFi , Bluetooth etc. : no luck.
I experience dozens of freezes a day. Almost to the point that cm12 is completely unusable. Love this ROM, but this is a real showstopper.
1. No
2. AOSP Vanir 5.02
3. Since first availibility (12/14)
I experienced this issue on 2 roms in 2 forms
1. No (coming from Stock 14.4.A.0.108)
2. KitSlim_AMG [Evo 8.1] / iHackers advanced Stock Kernel
3. Since installing the Rom
This was the first time i experienced touch-issues. Not a freeze of the screen, but the screen sometimes started registering touch-events on the wrong places. This was temporarly fixed by locking/unlocking the display.
1. Yes (coming from KitSlim_AMG [Evo 8.1] )
2. crDroid-5.0.2-20150303-honami / 3.4.0-crDroid (packaged with rom)
3. Since installing the Rom a day ago
This time i get freezes. And they are much more frequent than those "ghost-inputs" from KitSlim_AMG. Unlocking the device also fixes it temporarly.
