When I'm at work, I'm 14 days on an oil rig, while my cell phone lies at home.
The work network has lots of blocked pages, and that's a bit annoying on my spare time.
So I was wondering if anyone knows of an application that makes it possible to remote control my phone through the internet (it's connected to WiFi at home)?
I have with success used TeamViewer for this purpose (on my laptop), but I was hoping the phone could take over this job now.

Could use a VPN setup to bypass those firewall blocks and give you access to home computer shares...
recommend OpenVPN. i have a tut avaliable for Desire HD aswell. once Uv set the OpenVPN Server up.
Just read about Webkey on Lifehacker. If your DHD is rooted then this is exactly what you asked for. You can control everything via a web browser.

I took my G1 to school today and tried to connect to the WiFi there. It is an open network, but it requires you to login using your school account via a website. Usually, when I connect with my laptop and open my browser, I get automatically redirected to the login page.
With my G1, the browser can't load a single page. It says connected to the network, but I have no actual internet access, and can't get to that login page.
Any idea how I can get around this?

I have the same issue at my work. I have a captive portal that does not seem to redirect properly on the G1. Other phones seem to like it just fine. My work around is to add my mac to the auth bypass, but this only works because I am the actual admin for the wireless network.
try finding the address your laptop connects to and bookmarking it on the G1 and see if it lets you pull it up that way.
As I am pretty certain entering the redirect URL won't work (though I am trying it tonight) is there ANYTHING else anyone can think of changing or looking at? I had the same issue on my old Nokia N80, but only recently.
As predicted, the URL method did not work. Tried many variations and still no luck. Any further thought on this, or if the G1 will ever support Enterprise authentication?

I have the same issue in our Enterprise captive portal using different Android moldes ( Samsung Galaxy S 2 and mini ), can not get the login page, but works fine with an iPhone.
Any ideas?

Good find! Works best with Opera browser (other browsers such as IE and Firefox, won't display pictures for some reason...) Has some connectivity issues when using longer than 5 minutes (yes, I have enable usb bugging enabled and stay alive while connected via usb) All and all, a good program for your laptop without draining your G1 or when the REAL internet goes out. Yes, it seems to be only compatible with windows. Since you're in linux, you may try running it through WINE to see what happens.

Did you experience the pictures not loading problem also while using IE or firefox?
this doesn't really seem to work yet
I was able to install it without much trouble and the initial connection looked promising (well, some pages came up anyway).
It was basically impossible to connect to Speedtest.net however and Speakeasy only rated my connection at 287/283 kbps at best (the G1 was on WiFi). I tested it again with the G1 on 3G and got a 409/330 kbps (doesn't that seem weird that it would rate better on 3G?) but then it seemed to stop connecting somehow and I had to restart the program and reestablish the connection on the PC. After a few more minutes it happened again. I would call this basically not useful at the moment, but I hope they can work the bugs out and get some decent speed out of it.
For reference, using Tether WiFi to connect to the G1 over 3G Speakeasy rated the connection at 699/316 kbps. And in my experience it's stable/consistent.
As a disclaimer, this was on my work laptop which has some pretty hefty encryption software installed. While this may be the problem, I didn't have any trouble connecting initially (multiple times).
Additional:
Their "reviews" section is just "customer testimonials", as my honest yet critical assessment of the app's inability to perform as intended was NOT posted and they didn't even bother to drop me an email to try to sort out the problem. I hope they can improve on the app, but they're quickly losing my respect and interest.
I just got this. I dl it to my sd card, connect phone to pc w usb, ran exe through windows. Installed program automatically onto phone. Windows asks to install driver for g1 and it does the work from there.
It seems to work ok, the first few tries on my desktop it would disconnect after a few minutes, restarted phone and its been better but still only seems to stay connected for about 20 min, which should be ample time to do alittle websurfing without getting mad about disconnects.
well they might not have replied because they are aware of the problem, and they clearly state that this is beta software. if you look at the known issues the first one is about the connection dropping and having to reconnect.
once they work out the bugs this software will be pretty useful because of how easy it is to use.
if only i could plug the g1 into the 360 would save me $100...or if i could share the connection with my windows media desktop(i use it as a media server for my xbox and its not even close to a internet connection).
i tried to connect it but it does the network doesnt have sufficient MTU settings. xbox live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364.

i've been using mine for a while now...no problems once i turn off the wifi switch on my laptop...recently when i plug it in tho, it says PDAnet is expiring soon...is this supposed to be a paid app?
This app is gay... It was pretty good at first... but once the guy updated to r1.5... its been acting gay... it would come up with random blockings... it blocked www.google.com... wtf?... and wikipedia... yahoo answers... so I just got root and installed WiFi Tether for Root users... works way better and doesnt have blocks...

This is supposed to be plug and play. A lot of people have said it's great. I have not been so fortunate. Anyway, could someone give me directions on how to use this. 1. plug in phone via USB. 2. settings/wireless settings/ internet tether (on). 3. Go to PC and click on G1Tether click connect. For me this does not work. Help.
This application is a fine hold-over for people who are too stupid to get root, but it is a VERY VERY poor imitation of tethering.
1) A real tethering solution will NOT require proprietary crap to be installed on the CLIENT.
2) Wired or Wireless tether for root users *IS* a *TRUE* plug-it-in-and-it-works solution. Run the program on the phone, plug in the wire, and you're done. No weird nonsense to be installed on the computer.
I'm running Hash's ICS on my D3, and can't seem to do anything with any VPN connections. On MavROM 3.5, I was able to make un-encrypted PPTP connections, because for some reason, MPPE support is missing in the Kernel. I know what an absolute pain in the neck getting a PPTP server up and working on Linux can be, so I can't imagine what a pain getting it running on Android is like.
Has anyone been able to make any kind of VPN connection on their D3 with a CM9 based ROM? I have yet to hit my logs, and start capturing packets, but before I did, I wanted to see if its even possible, since having a locked bootloader makes things a little tougher..
Anyone have anything for this? 3rd party options? This is one area where the iPhone just works, and I have had a hell of a time getting various Android flavors connected to our VPN. Either PPTP or L2TP. It's just not as easy as an iPhone or iPad.
This is certainly been a decision factor for Tablet provisioning for our sales guys. One guy did buy his own Android tablet, and just can't get the VPN working, where all of our iPad's work without modification.

I've been searching for months.. I have found no viable fix for VPN on either CM7 or CM9, and from what I've found it's an upstream issue in Android itself. Only solutions I've found connect to other service providers to provide anonymity. i have not tried paid solutions.
Not sure if this is an option, but OpenVPN works flawlessly. Unless you strictly require a PPTP/L2TP solution, try it out. I've got an OpenVPN server running on my router at home so I can connect from my phone at any time and have quasi-LAN access to my home network, comes in really handy. Not to mention it's a billion times more configurable than either of the built-in (and outdated) VPN types.
Android has never been known for its VPN compatibility, surprisingly enough. You'd think it would be a major focal point in terms of customer requirements, but I guess it's sort of slipped through the cracks.
Nevertheless, try searching the Market (or Play, whatever they've called it now) for OpenVPN Installer and OpenVPN Settings, the first app does what you'd think and the second is where you initialize and configure your connections.
I've ran into a small issue with internet sharing on my HD7. Everything works fine, however, I'll get a message t-mobile to enable my phone as a mobile hotspot, $15 a month. Before this I've never had an issue with internet sharing, probably used it for 5/6 months (ever since mango has been out.) The internet isn't blocked, it just keeps redirecting. Lately I've had to teamviewer my home computer to get around this, which is extremely inconvenient.
Anyone know a fix to this? Or is a new policy with t-mobile to pay for the service?

Actually, with all cell providers, tethering/hotspot has always cost as an add-on to the plan... with that said, I am T-Mobile with my HD7, and with the deepshining rom, I have never been charged (knock on wood). if you have the stock ROM, maybe it flags the data as tethered so they can track it...
Found something interesting today. While using my internet sharing, I only get the t-mobile redirect while using chrome. However, in firefox, I can browse freely. A bit interesting.

Its because they are "blocking" tethering based on browser UAstring, and nothing else. For this reason, you can extremely simply spoof your UAstring as early Firefox or Safari versions (or just use FF or Safari) and not get redirects. There are addons and extentions for FF and Chrome to easily spoof the browser UAstring to anything you want.

I've been using the "Firefox 4" UAstring. I've tried some Safari strings also but some pages don't load properly (mainly GMail and Google+).
Its a horrible policy that many people have been fighting with for a long time now. Not only does it not work stopping any moderately sophisticated user on their desktop (because spoofing is SO easy), but it inadvertently "blocks" anyone trying to request desktop sites on their phones. Many browsers (especially Chrome Beta for Android 4.0) by default browse in desktop mode (or let you easily request desktop sites), and get redirected inadvertently.
You can call and complain all you want and the CS reps will either play dumb, or are actually unaware of the process of how they're sending out these messages. I've yet to make any headway on them.
Backstory a little bit: I use my phone quite a bit at school and for our robotics program. The thing is that we have majority of the sites/downloads we need are blocked. Thus requiring us to use a vpn to download these/access sites.
So I have really no idea what is going on except that I might need to setup a VPN profile in my settings but I also have don't know how to do that. Thanks for the help in advance!
