I bought my Captivate in December, and have since rooted, updated to Froyo through Kies, and even flashed a couple of kernels (currently running Firebird). I log onto and read posts on XDA almost daily, its kind of like my daily newspaper! Anyway, I have never understood how its possible that so many members have an i897 Captivate-based phone, yet is able to run i9000-based modems, kernels and ROMS. I've searched and googled, and can't get a straight answer, maybe my search terms need improvement, I don't know. But, is it possible to have
i9000 ROMS (with a i9000 modem/kernel of course) on our United States i897 Captivate? Or, is it that more members on this forum have i9000 based phones than I thought?

Im just taking a shot here, but i think its because our roms are based off the i9000 roms... (theyre not the same, but theyre in the same class...)

Yes. If you flash a stock version of an i9000 ROM then you will have orientation and Home button issues though. That is why there are kernels in the Captivate development section that are based on i9000 source code and reoriented along with other tweaks. You should also take care to read and understand exactly what it is that you are doing before attempting to flash any ROM, especially one made for an extremely similar, yet different, phone.
As I've learned the hard way, make sure to stay in the captivate development section. There are plenty of I9000, roms to pick from that will work fine for your i897. Just make sure to either use the kernel with the rom or pick a reoriented one. Keep in mind there is some call quality loss with the i9000 roms. And most of all, be careful with bootloaders.

So, I can take my cappy as it is now (stock Froyo, Firebird kernel), and flash an i9000 ROM, making sure to also flash an i9000 modem and kernel (if the ROM doesn't already come with one), and that's it?

Bootloaders, the one thing I haven't read up on yet. Think I'll read, read, read, and then read a little more after that. I forgot about the bootloaders. Thanks for the heads up Cdub3!

u only need to get acquainted with bootloaders if you are planning to jump to a gingerbread ROM other than cyanogenmod7 or miui from 2.1/2.2 ROMs. GB bootloader+2.1/2.2 secondary bootloader=

it must be a REORIENTED kernel in order for it to work. in all honesty, i have found that its better to select any rom from the captivate section rather than using a straight i9000 rom from the i9000 forums. go ahead and try a few out, but you will quickly see why i would suggest getting one of the mature i9000 roms from the captivate section instead. references to front facing camera, lack of haptic feedback on the home key, and other little things will begin to creep up on you. it gets annoying.

You should flash the i9000 ROM and then flash a reoriented i9000 kernel from the Captivate development section and while the modem must be an i9000 modem when using an i9000 based ROM, you should research which modems support your carrier best. I'll assume you are on AT&T and say you need a modem that supports the 850MHz band if you want 3G support everywhere AT&T offers it when you travel inside the US. The standard i9000 modems support the 1900MHz band, which AT&T uses in my area. I'd suggest following the guides in the Captivate Development section though. Most ROMs there have done this work for you. They are almost all based on the official i9000 releases. There is nothing wrong with playing around after you understand the basics though. I run stock i9000 Gingerbread with the i9000 reoriented kernel by xcaliburinhand. Then I tailor it to my liking.
Hello, SGS newbie here (phone not actually arrived yet, will be here Monday).
I think the phone looks amazing, only thing I'm not mad on is the iPhone look and feel Samsung have gone for with the home screens, so I'm thinking of either customising it or putting a different ROM on the device. Cyanogen, Darky's and MIUI are the ones I've read about the most.
What is Darky's? Is it more or less a stock Android with LauncherPro, or is it more than that?
Edit: also wondering - is the Samsung Gingerbread ROM worth trying, does it solve some of the performance problems of earlier versions?
Everything is worth trying! If you want to skip the usual newbie routine, then jump straight ahead to an AOSP ROM like CM7 or MIUI... You won't regret it.
Try Tweaky's AOSP

oh....and I expect your phone will come with GB installed any way...if not, depending on your supplier, Kies may offer you the firmware upgrade when you install it, and despite some reports (in my opinion) it represents a big improvement over 2.2 Froyo.
All the new custom roms are based on 2.3.3 gingerbread any way
Also pretty newbified here, but is it possible to get GB simply on a kernel flash and stay on stock rom, or will i have to flash a custom rom to do this. I have froyo 2.2 but speedmods kernel - pretty happy but would like to try out GB.

Navigate to Ramad's stock rom thread, choice of stock 2.3.3 rom there, both odexed and deodexed
Cm7 is pretty much same as nexus s rom with lots of additions( theme manager, dsp, cyanogenmod settings, etc). You can also try sammy gb roms if you wish( flash with odin, there is guides about it just google) but you have to downgrade the bootloaders before you go back to cm7 ( I bet you will)
Thanks for the info folks. I guess I'll stay on the stock rom at least for a few weeks and get used to it although I reckon I'll use launcherpro with it as I don't like the samsung launcher.

HI guys,
First of all great to be part of this community. This is my first Android phone after being an IOS user since the original iphone. I just like change so decided to jump on the android wagon. i gotta say so far i love it i have HC on the 7plus tab and my note is on GB 2.3.6 xxla4a and i think its a saudi phone n700jpla1 kernel. Now here's the deal the note is new i didnt change anything so not rooted its unloccked though, now i want to install stock ics or the galaxy sIII rom.
Before you start bashing, i read a lot but it is so confusing i don't wanna mess up the phone. I just want the easiest way to flash stock stable ics build and root it. the IOS was very limited you only had to jailbreak and there was a site with all tutorials to do it. With android there are so many possibilities from what i read (custom roms and dif kernels) yet it's not all in one place.
So to sum it up if a kind soul can help me out i'll be very grateful.
Thanks
Please note thing first - You cannot flash a Galaxy SIII Rom on to the Note. You cannot flash ROMs of any other devices on the Galaxy Note. (You can try but that kind of an exercise would brick your phone instantly). Different phones have different ROM structures which are not interchangeable. In fact you have to ensure that you only flash ROMs for your particular model which is GT-N7000.
and if you want stock ICS better to wait for stable version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646088
The first post should help you get clarity on how to install ICS (specifically the LPY version) and root it.
BTW it would be advisable to stay with GB for now. There is a bug with the all ICS versions so far that might cause a fully bricked phone. Read about it in the stickied posts in the development section.
Thanks for the replies you just confirmed what i was afraid. i'll just stick to GB for now until the update rolls out on my phone evetnough i'm not sure i will get one soon. lastly i'm getting the s3 when it comes out.Going all in with Samsung
Hey all,
new to the GNote forums, but been playing with android for some time now.
Just needing some tips on the way to gain rooted GB on my note.
im not super interested in getting ICS yet....but could be swayed
From what i can tell, i need to odin flash a pre-rooted gb rom (in particular an LC1 version of the rom) and then to flash a LC1 version of the kernel to suit. Sound about right?
My current plan is to
1. flash LC1 Open Europe from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025 with PC odin
2. flash LC1 kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 with flasher included in download
3. enjoy rooted phone.
My phone is currently stock (only got it a day ago) and am on Optus in Australia. I am running the following spec according to "settings/about phone"
Android 2.3.6
BBand N7000XXLB2
Kernel 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLC1-CL1003701
Build GINGERBREAD.XXLC1
does my plan above sound right for this phone?
I'm well versed in flashing phones, but coming over from the X10 its a very different technique and there are lots of different files to match up that im just not 100% on yet
cheers guys, already super happy to be a samsung user - love the note!

I have a French note from Kogan that I've had for a couple of months. I just updated to ICS via Odin last night and then rooted it. I'm on Telstra here in oz. It seems ok and the internet seems faster and more stable but I'll know more after a full week of use. Its my first Samsung so although I had rooted phones before I was a bit nervous about using Odin and the brick bug terrified me.
Sent from my gnote as always

Yes your plan sounds right - follow Dr Ketan's thread in the Development forum.
I bought a Note via UK - turned out to be Polish (it was one of the first released last November). I rooted it using Zergrush then always used CWM, so while Odin works I prefer to use Clockwork Mod as I can do all the flashing on the phone.
Some other things that may help..
I'm on Telstra and never (touch wood) had any modem / Nexg G/Wi-fi issues)
On Gingerbread I found AbyssNote kernel to be one of the best (everyone uses 4.2 version when flashing to ICS so you may find it useful to download) Not sure what my original baseband was but have used others and they all seem to be ok - maybe I'm just lucky!
Also Rocket Rom on Gingerbread and ICS seems to be reliable as well.
So if you feel the need to ICS - use the above kernel and ROM and follow instructions on RocketRom OP.
Haven't found a dedicated kernel or firmware version for the Australian Note, but since I'm on Polish one so far everything seems to work.
Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of the Galaxy Note - had it over eight months and never tire of it
thanks guys!
i took the plunge the other night - i figured that i had read as much as i could read and just dove in.
First up i Odin flashed a pre-rooted rom (LC1).
That was nice for a little while, but i wanted more
I then flashed the CF Root kernel on so i could have CWM. This was nice, i was able to take a nand backup so i could always go back to stock if i needed to.
Now, i was getting the hang of the methods for this phone. I used CWM to flash on CheckRom v6 (GB) but i really wanted to go for ICS.
I read that as i was on a non standard kernel GB rom, i could go straight there. Guess what? thats what i did next
Im currently running Paranoid Android v0.5 and am loving it!
Loving the Note, it makes my work iPhone 4 feel more and more redundant each day
Tim.
Hello All,
I"m having a Galaxy GT-I9000, which was originally from Europe. The last update I got from samsung is 2.3.3 (GINGERBREAD.XWJVH). I dont think samsung will publish any updates for this model anymore.
I would like to go with the custom ROM, I know It's not so easy to as I say.
Is there any easy way to decide and install it ASAP. Plz guide me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance

Actually this question was asked countless times already. I'm not trying to be smart or something like that but there are several similar threads already.
Try to look within this General Forum and in the Question & Answer Forum and you will surely get an answer.
Install slimbean. if unsatisfied try flashing others.

Just search a bit... http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665.
Make a clean install of ICS333 2.0.1 ROM. The most stable and memory friendly ROM so far (ever). It's very fast also.
The JB roms are on par - try SlimBean or CM10 (but flash Semaphore 2.6.0 kernel on CM10). Don't try JB 4.2 - tt's very new . Wait 1-2 months for good releases.
without creating a new thread, but along the lines of this subject already, can I ask, if there are any custom rom's that include the official samsung email application? I know that's specific, but its for some testing..A port from another samsung device maybe,,,tia
I am very happy with Slim Bean. It is "slim", and very battery efficient. I could use a full battery charge on 3.5 days, with mail, sms and few phone calls.
Just be careful with the last version, 3.0, that has a battery drain problem. I can only get 2 days from a load.
I used RemICS 1.3.1. very good, but lags at times.
Here look

Lots of customisation and awesome battery life!!!
