So I rooted my new Captivate (Rogers, I896) using this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827544
Everything worked perfectly, and the Superuser Access icon appeared in the app drawer. Unfortunately, no programs can gain superuser access. ROM Manager keeps giving me an error when I try to do anything (flash recovery, fix permissions etc) and doesn't show up on the list of 'Superuser' programs. I haven't gotten any prompts to allow access, either, so I don't know what's wrong. Any ideas, XDA?
It's quite possible that your root is incomplete, that happens sometimes with some rooting methods. You should try re-rooting. That thread lists at least three rooting methods, which one did you use?

I rooted using the method from the link in my first post. You were right, though - it was incomplete. I re-rooted with z4 and it worked perfectly -- enjoying AXURA and the lack of TouchWiz =D

//EDIT: Please delete this thread. Titanium Backup installed BusyBox for me after I clicked the "Problem?" button. Sorry!
**Skip to the other asterisked line to skip the long story**
Last night I decided "(vulgarity here) AT&T!" and decided to load FroYo myself.
After reading for hours (on top of reading I've been doing for a few weeks) it seemed it was easier to root on 2.1, then update to 2.2.
I rooted, then installed 2.2 only to find out I was no longer rooted when I tried restoring my apps with MyBackup Pro. After tons of searching and trying 3 "one click" style rooting programs, many times over, the SuperOneClick method worked, only after I did the shell root, and then root button.
Awesome! I had a rooted 2.2 captivate! Restoring my apps with MyBackup Pro let me knew it worked, and then I was also able to install a non-market foreign language pack for the AnySoftKeyboard app. I also installed the MarketAccess app and I'm running the T-Mobile US code, so I'm pretty sure I've got root.
Tonight I wanted to get rid of all the AT&T garbage still on the phone, and a guide I found told me that Titanium Backup would allow me to do so (still not sure if it can all be done from the phone though). I downloaded and installed Titanium Backup, opened it up, clicked the button to allow SuperUser, but I get an error message:
Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work ! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.
Pretty sure I'm rooted, I am assuming I only require BusyBox be on the phone?
**I was under the impression that rooting and BusyBox was the same thing, or went hand-in-hand, one needing the other.
After now 4 more hours of searching, I can't seem to find a guide that only installs BusyBox, and I'm hesitant to try any of the Root and BusyBox in one methods for fear of the root not working and potentially messing something up.
I found one posting that requires a bunch of commands, but I have no idea where to do them from/in or what to do with the phone.
If anybody could link me to or tell me how to install BusyBox that would be awesome! I am rooted on FroYo. I have the drivers installed. I have DroidExplorer installed. Not sure of anything else that may have come in the .zip files I downloaded that might be installed, so assume only the drivers and DroidExplorer and installed.
Thanks in advanced!!
Busybox is an app on the market, download, open app, install, profit

One rooted when you try and run a program that requires root access a notification should open asking if you why to allow root access.
Click on the super user app. What happens?
nope nothing pop up to ask if i allow the access...
I have tried a two types of one click root program which is Superoneclick and another one by TGA_Gunnman..
But both act in the same way that nothing will pop up and ask whether to allow access...
What happens when you click on the super user app?
Have you tried rebooting the phone?
Have you tried replacing apk with market, search superuser in market, see if it shows installed, try to update or replace
You are on stock, correct
yeap i have tried to reboot after the rooting process...
I can open the superuser app too.
Yes im on stock.
Im thinking should i use z4root now?
Might as well. Did you check for the app in the market?
What are you looking to accomplish with root? What is your goal?
yup i checked the market too... it shows i ald installed the superuser..
Just want to root and use the rom manager to back up...
And i dunno y suddenly the root works! now im okay! Thanks for the help!
I guess we need to install again from market and reboot in order to use this...
No problem, who knows what the issue was. Enjoy, I am sure you will be flashing roms in no time
I've upgraded to stock 2.2. I rooted with SuperOneClick and that worked fine. I wanted to install SGSTools so I downloaded it to my phone. I tried to install it using SuperManager but it came back and said what I expected, that my phone would not install apps that did not come from the market. So back to SuperOneClick to enable Non Market Apps. It fails. So, how can I do this?
I also tried to use the AIO Captivate Toolbox but that didn't work either. I could not find the apk on my phone anywhere and the app did not show up in my app tray. I had this on 2.1 as well.
Any advice would be appreciated. Mostly just trying to learn.
Did you try using super one click? There an option to add side loading with it.
Finally got the question answered. SuperOneClick finally worked. I rebootedd twice and was able to respond to the superuser request prompt. Successfully installed SGSTools using SuperManager.
Before I get into it, I'm not sure if this is the best section for this. I posted here because it's a Samsung Captivate I am using and this is a question.
Anyway, I used a video to root my Captivate. I downloaded SuperOneClick, the USB Drivers for Captivate and .NET Framework. Everything went well and it said my phone was rooted successfully. Well, I used Root Check and Term Emulator and both said my phone was, infact, not rooted.
I also have the SuperUser app on my phone. I then proceeded to try again, where I got the error that my Captivate was already rooted. I used psneuter exploit to root. Now, I'm attempted to unroot my phone, where SuperOneClick seems to be frozen at "Waiting for device.."
After I unroot, what should I change or try?
Did you enable USB debugging from your phone? Give me more details on your rom and other stuff.
Also if your on gingerbread the one click root doesn't work on some gingy builds

Download any app from the market that requires root. Try to use it. If it works, your rooted, if not something is wrong.
Previously, I installed Cyanogenmod (http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=RC&device=mb886), and still had root access, but there was an issue with the baseband.
So I just installed HoloBlur (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356624), fixed the baseband (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233871) and now it seems that I do not have full root access and Superuser binaries will not update.
First, I downloaded the superuser binaries and zip files to try and update them that way (http://androidsu.com/superuser/)
But that didn't work so I downloaded and used this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su.fixer&hl=en), which crashed after trying to gain root access. No superuser options show up in settings, and Superuser wants to crash. I have tried superuser from Chainfire and Koush. Neither can update binaries, and the version by Koush wants to crash. I assumed I didn't have root access.
I have tried using motochopper again (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227938)
and I have tried using Myth Tools again (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262726) (basically another motochopper...)
Neither have worked.
So:
How do I gain root access again if none of the above methods work? Is it possible?
Yes, bootloader is still unlocked, and CWM is still installed. Just, no root access.
Flashing superuser.zip should work. That is what I did when I installed holoblur. I would need to find the link though

That fixed it. Sorta.
Went back into CWM recovery, selected to install from zip, and installed the zip from here: http://androidsu.com/superuser/
This was the one that worked:
(3.2-RC3)
md5: 6462ac14cd38ed7c539ce3e29a6b92a8
Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip
Apps are now gaining superuser/root access but it doesn't seem to be working like the normal superuser.
The default superuser apps still aren't working.
I'll have to check up on it more when I get back from classes.
Oddly enough, the chainfire superuser app now installs correctly.
For some odd reason, it requested access from the first one installed. Either way, it's working, and it seems as if all the apps that need root access are getting it. I don't see any special Superuser settings in the menus, but I'm guessing that's just a feature i've been seeing in all the roms.
Long story short: Problem solved
Hope this topic helps anyone who has similar issues.
