backing up doesnt affect the ability to restore really. its more so that when you restore you can retrieve all the data you had. there may be a rare situation when recovery works but download does not. really before you flash anything power down the phone and try to 3 button into recovery. hold both volumes and the power button untill the att screen pops up. press the volumes first.
if that works pull the battery and try download. that's both volumes and plug in a usb cable. hold volumes till the yellow sign pops up.
if they both work then you can consider rooting and getting rom manager. with rom manager you can flash clockwork mod recovery and from there you can nand backup and restore. also get the development kit and try out adb. it will get you out of trouble in some situations. from adb you can adb reboot download which will force a reboot into download mode as long as the phone starts and doesn't go into a boot loop, even with a boot loop you may get a second to run the command if your timing is right. you can also adb reboot recovery and get into clockwork mod.
for apps only you can get titanium backup.

Help 2 day old Captivate Freezing up.

I have a Samsung Captivate and was able to sim unlock nd then root everything was running great, but because i wanted to change the rom and get rid of the AT&T bloatware I decided to install SRE rom from this site but first i had to install rom manager from the market, & install Clockwork Mod which i did so far so good. I go ahead watch the video follow it step by step except i didn't wipe data then install rom. So i decided to kinda start over i booted into recovery wiped data then attempted to install SRE rom again and that's when all hell broke loose phone freezing up on the home screen, not completing its boot process, rebooting by itself, i tried removing Sim card, Microsd, but still not allowing me to reboot into recovery with the key combo or ne other way for that matter. I then tried odin one click to reinstall factory everything but no luck. Sorry for the long story just trying to put it all out there. O yeah i'm a newb incase you couldn't tell. I don't have insurance to try to return to at&t. Thank you in advance for any and all help you may provide.

try getting your phone into download mode. If you can do that then use odin to flash everything to stock.
Are you able to get adb to access the phone? You can access recovery from there with the following command:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Also, are you getting into download mode when trying Odin 1-click? I've found a pretty fool-proof method pull battery/SIM/SD, putting the battery in, holding down the two volume buttons and then plugging in the USB. Works every time for me, and is easier than it sounds.
I was stuck on a boot loop the other night and that process got me into download mode so I could flash with Odin and then restore my backup.
Worst comes to worst, just bring it to AT&T and say it randomly did that. If it's only two days old, and you're under contract (didn't buy it outright) you don't need insurance. I don't even think insurance is available for this phone.
take out the battery, plug in the usb, put the battery back in, hold both volume buttons down, then hold the power button down... the grey/green battery icon will flash to a black screen, as soon as it flashes to the black screen the second time, let the power button go, and download mode should be there.
@rrrrrramos i do not have a contract with them. I obtained this phone through a friend that does have insurance for the handset. Since my computer does not recognize it i am not able to adb.
@magnumrt62 & rrrrramos I have tried these button, usb combos and nothing. I appreciate all the responses i will con't to try and seek psychiatric help...lol.
How would i know i am in dl mode? All it does when i let go of the power button after the second blk screen is nothing but show green battery nd con't to charge then goes to black screen. Computer doesn't recognize it.
Are you using the SRE with voodoo in it, if so that is not playing nice with ROM Manager, it is a known issue that Clockwork Mod dosen't recognize ext4. Sounds like that may be the issue. read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170
It sound like that is the problem.
I am unable to mount/unmount the internal/external sd cards because the phone freezes and does not allow for this. The few times i was able to get odin to recognize phone com3 i hit masterclear left it alone and 6hrs later it had done nothing. I can't even get into recovery mode. I am about to see if this beautiful phone will fly then bounce... O how a grown man wants to cry over his phone... LMAO... Can ne 1 close to orlando, kissimme, poincianna help a fellow Captivate lover out i got beer money, gas money, i'll drive too you. hell i'll even cook a new york strip or two.. HELP ME PLEASE..
To do master clear your have to be in usb debug mode and at the home screen. Fire up odin then plug the phone in odin will see the phone and then hit master clear. It will then wipe the phone

Thats where the phone freezes up at on the home screen and just stays stuck there. The last time I was able to get into the phone i switched on usb debugging but still nothing. I just booted up the phone and heard the sweet bing sound but still doesn't show up.. I really appreciate every1 taking time out to try to help me.. Just wanted to put that out there..
So am i one of the unfortunate souls to have "BRICKED" his phone. I will not give up yet.. As long as i see the sweet "S" i will not give up..
I don't think you bricked it. Something is going on with your drivers, if the computer won't recognize it. Obviously your phone has been able to boot into recovery before if you had ClockworkMod on it. Did you get into Recovery using the key combo?
I have not been able to get into recovery using any key combo. Right know i am actually in Android System Recovery by using adb reboot recovery and a lil luck and speed. It is recognized by odin3 0:[com3] but it will not do any thing. I clicked master clear and it states master clear started but that was 53 minutes ago.
You need to use the odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 as it is made to specifically use with the captivate. It also includes the jf6 kernael which is critical. I used method 3 for the I-9000 because SRE 1.3 put that kernel on the phone and screwed it up big time, it has different hardware assignments. When you put the battery in, hold volume up and down and plug in the usb, no sim, no external sd when doing this. No other version of odin worded for me, just this one. You can't do a master clear until you are fully booted, I don't care what anyone says, it will never work, besides, you don't need to. You need to hit the "Start" button in odin when it show that you're connected. It will reflash you phone with the proper rom and kernel.
Don't download anything else from there but the odin file, you have the drivers already and don't need the other kernels (what got you here to begin with ). just that version of odin that already has what you need.
Good luck man!

It's great that you can get into recovery mode through adb because that means you can get into download mode: adb reboot download. Then you can flash back to stock with odin.
Also forget about recovery. That's not going to help you right now. You need to be in download mode to use Odin
I'm going to give that a shot when i get home. Why didn't I think about adb reboot download wow guess you can tell i'm a real NEWB.. Thanks i'll let u know how it works out for me..

What is it that you don't understand. Master clear only works when you are at the home screen. You can't evoke it from download mode or recovery. You have to have your phone recognized by odin when you are at your home screen and then you can hit master clear. That is the only way that it will work.
It sounds like adb works so when you are at the home screen and you envoke adb reboot recovery it reboots the phone into recovery correct. If that is working then there should be no reason master clear won't work then. Boot the phone up normally and then run odin 1 click then plug the phone in if odin recognizes the phone then hit master clear and see what it does. It should work.
@ Everyone who suggested things for me to try THANK YOU. I finally got it with the adb reboot download. Didn't know i could do that. @Sparker366 I would envoke adb b4 it got to the home screen as soon as odin recognized it i would envoke commands, because the phone would freeze on me on the home screen Just didn't know about the "download" command. Thanks again every1...

[FIX] Enable download mode by force adb push update.zip without permission

MY Phone Condition:
My phone was previously install with voodoo rom and use clockwork recovery to restore to my stock rom that i backup and it crash half way.
My phone was hardware lock this mean no matter how i press the volume and power button , i will never get into download mode. non of the method posted work !
My phone cannot use "adb reboot download" because there is no OS and it was stuck in the recovery loop.
It does not have clockwork recovery because i formatted my internal sdcard
If i do have clockwork recovery and i use restore image or install new from zip , i still stuck in the recovery mode after reboot several times.
My phone does not mount to internal sdcard because i don't even know what i did on this part.
I believe i screw up my partition of the phone.
DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
You need the Samsung USB driver and you can get it from Here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
First Part
1. Download update.zip from the link below. This was post by another member.
The post is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
2. Place the update.zip in tools folder so you can push it into your phone by using adb command
3. Plug usb into the phone and your phone should be on the Android system recovery <2e>
4. Use your volume button to select reinstall package, don't press power button yet.
5. constant "adb push update.zip /sdcard" from computer , you will get permission denied.
6. While you are constantly pushing the adb command from computer. press the power button on the phone so it install update.zip from sdcard.
7. This is the part where it force adb push into sdcard without permission
8. once the update.zip install completed. unplug the usb cable from the phone and take the battery out.
9. put the battery back to the phone then press on both volume button.
10. While holding both volume button , plug in your usb cable and it will boot to download screen.
If you need use Odin to flash your phone to original stock rom. Go to the Second Part
Second Part:
If you get black screen with only 4 light on the bottom after flashing from Odin.
Follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
There should be T959-PDA.tar,T959-CSC.tar and T959-Phone.tar within the package.
Check "Re-Partition" , "Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time" check box. Use the PIT 0512 version. Use "PDA", "PHONE" and "CSC" from the link above.
After flashing with Odin, you will loose the download mode. repeat the first part and you are good to go.
Here is the link on rooting the phone

You figure it out after all. I already stated the condition of my phone ! My phone was pretty bricked at that point. There is way for me to push any files into the phone because i don't have permission and my phone will not go to download mode by using the volume button. It just stuck at recovery mode.
There are guide out there teach you to use "adb push download". This method only work if you are in your phone and you turn on debug mode. My phone crash at the clockwork recovery bootloader. Then i formated my internal sdcard that hold the clockwork. next i push a stock update.zip that does not have su and busybox so i lost the capability to push anything into the phone.
no download mode , no permission, no sdcard --> You tell me how can i use the method that post few week ago ?

unfortunately, i was one of those careless people to brick my phone via Voodoo.
Firstly, i tried to "FLASH" the disable_voodoo zip file via Clockwork, i put it in root, and never created any folders. i knew i had to disable voodoo before flashing but my steps were wrong.
sadly enough, my phone was also HW locked, so i got it exchanged. now im not using voodoo YET and i my new vibrant can handle OC and has the recovery/download mode via buttons.

i use shell to create the file that disable voodoo. after disable voodoo , i was able to do restore and install new rom unfortunately after restore or install new rom , it still reboot into recovery.
I also forgot to disable voodoo, and this was before there were fix instructions posted. So i basically effed up my phone to the point of being stuck in the samsung recovery loop, no hardware download mode, no clockwork recovery, no update.zp, no adb download.
I really thought I had completely bricked my phone, I tried this just out of desperation and what do you know, push update.zip over and over and click and it goes through, which allowed me to get into download mode.

nice , you just have to re-root and install the new rom again , if it brick again , just use this method and you are good again.many of us forgot to disable the voodoo before we restore or install new rom and this crashes the phone.
Need some help really bad
Ok so I have a similar situation as you did (OP), only mine is a bit worse... In my irrational "in the moment" fear of the situation, I used adb reboot recovery to get into recovery mode (HW locked phone) and I did the option that deletes all the **** on the phone and restores the phone to its original format (I think it reinstalled the OS or something, because it looks brand new). So now, whenever I boot up, it does the annoying black screen with the 4 glowing buttons thing for a while, and then eventually the OS actually shows up on the screen. Then it does "scanning media" thing over and over again, but thats not the main problem. I figured, hey this isnt so bad atleast I found your thread and would be able to use your method to help restore my phone... the problem is that somehow my "settings" button is totally gone from the app menu, and I cant get it into debug mode, so I cant use either adb or your method or ANYTHING!! My phone is practically bricked as I cant do anything because its constantly laggy and turns back to the black screen thing, and then when it is showing the homescreen I cant do **** because even swiping to another screen takes like 5 minutes to do cause its so laggy. So basically I ****ed up, and I really need some help.. Im kinda a noob at this whole thing and im really outa options as far as I can tell.. does anyone know what I can do to repair my phone? Thanks!

[Q] Rooted... now what

Hey everybody. So I rooted by phone following the instructions from theunlockr.com and their "how to root the samsung vibrant/captivate"
and then followed the instructions on their "how to load a custom rom on samsung captivate/vibrant"
Now what exactly do I do? I mean I kind of understand ROMs but if I want to install 2.2 what should I do? Is Cognition a good choice? How exactly would I install that? Also if I install 2.2 would I be able to go back to 2.1 when the official is finally released? I understand enough to mod my phone but not fully enough how to change it back if I mess up. So could I please get some help?
Also:
- What new things can I actually do w/ 2.2?
- Will I have to reinstall all my apps? Contacts?
Thanks in advance!
Download rom manager from market free version
To option flash clockwork recovery
Select captivate
Turn phone off
Vol up and down and power
When at&t comes up let go
Should go into recovery
Select reinstall packages
Brings you back to same screen
Reinstall packages
Should bring you to green recovery
Reboot phone
Power off phone
Remove bat, sim, and external sd
Put bat back in
Usb plugged into computer
Vol up and down hold plug usb in
Should have an orange android with a shovel, you are in download mode
Pull bat, put everything back in boot phone
If you can not do every thing listed I would hold flashing anything
Make sure you have usb drivers for phone installed and pc can see your phone
Don't forget to use Titanium Backup first so you can recover your installed apps. I use ODIN JF6 With 3 Button Fix to get back to stock.
There are a lot of good ROM's out there. I've been really happy with di11igaf's 3.0.2, but it's best to see what the people are saying in each thread and make an educated choice.

[Q] Captivate on Life Support, XDA docs please help!

I was going to install a new rom on my captivate (which was running AXURA).
I back up user apps with Titanium Backup, then I go into recovery mode to revert back to stock. There was only 1 nandroid backup in the console, and that was from the date I flashed Axura, so I thought it was a stock rom. I flashed to that, but when I rebooted the phone, I still had AXURA but without any of my apps or customizations. In addition, the haptic feedback vibrates constantly without anyway to stop it, and error messages keep popping up on the screen that give me the option to "force close" or "wait"
I went back into recovery and deleted all user data hoping that this would wipe the Axura but instead I still have the same error ridden Axura build now without keyboard! Also unable to do BT file transfers (I tried to put the new custom rom on through a BT transfer but to no avail).
I tried the four steps here http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode and still havent been able to get it into download mode so that I could use ODIN to fix the issue.
None of the computers I plug the captivate into recognize it (windows or mac). I have installed the drivers on one of the windows machines and it didnt recognize. the other windows box no drivers were installed but it still said nothing. The phone also said nothing even with USB debugging enabled it would not say anything indicative of a USB being connected rather it would respond like I had connected a charger (just the alert noise and charging graphic in menu bar)
I dont know what to do here...I want to get axura off my phone and get a working rom installed. At the very least I want a way to get a rom onto the internal SD or to have the computer recognize the device. What do I do?! I appreciate all help in advance.

You have ROM X with Kernel Y.
What color is the recovery mode text that you're booting into (red or green).

Yo Im a friend of his, his recovery is the stock samsung blue recovery
What he is trying to do is place the clockworkmod update.zip on the root of the internal sdcard but he can't get into download mode
Or
Flash using Odin
I am not too familar with samsung phone, I have a Droid X. Is there anyway to access the external sdcard instead of the internal?
**Update
So he still had the clockworkmod update.zip in on the root of the internal sdcard
he is able to get back into clockworkmod but the backup when restore, boots up with force close errors and he cant connect to the computer when booted and for some reason he cant get into download mode.
Is there anyway to access adb through the clockworkmod recovery?

If his computer wont see it then ADB wont do you any good as it will tell you there is no device found. Looks like a jig maybe in his future. Should have used odin to return to stock instead of a backup file.

So he reinstalled the axura zip file(which is what the nandroid backup was of) and it gave him a error on line 10 or something. he rebooted and the force close messages are gone and his phone works but his computer still doesn't recognize it!
Any Suggestions?
What happens when you plug the usb in? On phone and pc
Has he tried other usb ports or another computer?
I sympathize because I flashed p10.2 from p4. Tried to flash the update zip instead of doing Odin to stock. Scared me and I learned my lesson. Do it the right way the first time. Shortcuts can lead to problems.

[Q] Getting into recovery mode

Hi,
I was wanting to perform a nandroid backup of my phone so that i can upgrade to the latest baseband as I don't really want to wait for it to be released in the uk.
So I turned the phone off and then powered the phone back on. I have read through this forum and on google and found I need to press The power button and volume down until android appeared. So...
The first time I did this the first screen I got to was the updating screen. I let go before the screen appeared as my htc hero (phone before my O2X) booted straight into recovery mode after holding for a second or two. I had to pull the battery and let the phone reboot.
The second time I did it I got to a box with an arrow pointing out of with the android outside of it so I let go again. This time it has wiped the phone back to factory defaults.
Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong please. Obviously the nandroid backup is useless now I have nothing to backup but I'd still like to know for the future.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction
Sedge
If entering recovery reset your phone you didn't install clockworkmod recovery. Install CWM from a thread in the O2X development forum or download ROM Manager from Market
Oooooo that makes me feel like a right n00b.... cheers for that. Do i need root access for cwm?
If i was to get rom manager does that do the same job as cwm to get into recovery mode??
thank you so much for your help!!

Yes you need root, if you use the one from my thread, it gains a root shell to flash it, but doesn't perm root the phone.
Use SuperOneClick if you want proper root.
Cheers for that rusty. I might just perm root it tbh then i can also do a titanium backup and use that. When you say it needs root to flash, does Cwm flash something onto the phone to make the phone enter recovery? If it does, what does it flash?
Thanks again!!

It flashes itself so you can boot into it.
You can use ROM Manger to boot into it, vol- & power, reboot apps from the Market etc
