X11 port for Hero? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just curious, how hard would it be to get X11 drivers for the Hero? Has anyone worked on this at all? It would be awesome if we could run Mer or Ubuntu natively.

probably not too bad. Chances are, there are generic drivers already built in that we could use.

would be sweet if someone can make it work..
i imagine it will be a battery killer
You would have to have the Debian OS installed on the side, which has been discussed on the forum many times. And then you'd have to run it on Debian. After hooking up the phones WiFi to Debian, which as far as I know, there aren't any Drivers made yet.
So, the G1 is capable, but it takes a great deal of work.
Not even mentioning the fact that it is illegal to crack the WiFi codes in some places...
Also, this is not a development question, it should be in Dream Q&A.

Aircrack for Android
Hi
Look just go here:
javapassionblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/aircrack-ng-su-android.html
As much as I would love it, no. I've been hunting this for a while myself. The G1 doesn't have Android drivers capable of monitor mode.
There is hope though. SHR Linux is a distro designed for phones. It started as an OS for the Openmoko Neo Freerunner and was planned to spread to more but it sucks on everything but the Freerunner and the G1.
http://www.shr-project.org/trac/wiki/Devices/HTCDream/InstallGuide
Anyway, SHR Linux uses the wl12xx driver, a mac80211-based driver for the wl1251 (the G1's wifi chip). Driver stability is sketchy but if we're lucky it'll go into monitor mode without crashing. The procedure to use the driver is written here: http://www.htc-linux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Dream#Core_Status
I haven't tried SHR Linux yet, it's on my list of stuff to do. I think I'll give a go today.
Before someone says "the chip doesn't support monitor mode", yes it does. Some guy made monitor+injection drivers for the N900 which uses the same wifi chip as the G1. Google "N900 bleeding edge wifi" if you want to see it, it's on his blog. 'Why can't we use this working driver for SHR/Debian/Android' you ask? Because that driver was designed for the Power Kernel mod of Maemo, but the driver would definitely help devs if they sought to get monitor mode from Android.
Slack
Don't forget about Backtrack's older versions as well (when we ran aircrack-ng through slackware)... BT had been using Slackware in some of the beginning releases of development and aircracl-ng ran beautifully.
Slackware has been around forever and has alson has a ARM based release of their distro for a little while now. I think it would be nice to see any of our devices running slackware and aircrack together, But who knows.
I liked BT better when it ran Slack anyways.

i have all this working with your fantastic tutorial and files provided and good links, but i have one problem, the resolution looks like it is set too high for the g1 480x320 res, and which buttons do you use to close airodump-ng to use aircrack-ng to crack the key??
Work in ZTE Racer in Android 2.1 yes or no
Hello Everybody!
I am using Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 and I can successfully run monitor mode on it with bcmon. I can run tools like reaver, aireplay-ng, aircrack-ng, airodump-ng and they all work perfectly, but I would really like to run airbase-ng, but when I try to run it, I got:
sh: airbase-ng: not found
Can anybody help me to get this tool working?
Thanks!

[??? TO DEVs] Is it possible to port Maemo on HTC devices?

Hello
Title says it all.
Do you think it is possible to port Nokia's MaemoOS (www.maemo.org) from the new Nokia N900 to hTC devices?
Thanks for answers.

Hi,
What are the difference with it and Winmo, Android,...?
that's hot!
im curious too about maemo...
i've taked a look on the web,but i found nothing....
It's Debian based running Hildon-Desktop on top...
With enough devs doesn't seem too hard to port, we already got Linux Kernel running on some PDA's it's mostly an Hildon-Desktop doing the rest.
Would be interesting indeed, I am currently waiting for Android to the HD, but Maemo would be nice too ! And I think I am not the only one.

There is community driven edition of Maemo called Mer. It is fully open source and it should in theory be possible to run it on blackstones at the moment. But it is not that usable/fully polished as Maemo 5 on Nokia n900. HTC Touch Pro is already mentioned on http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer/Status.
PS. I'm following UPS delivery of my n900, will have it on monday
Don't forget that the N900 is a really powerfull device with alot more "oempf" then our HD's.
I think that as an linux distributable, android is allot more qaulified for our HD's then Meamo will ever be
Thank you all for very good replies
I did not think that this would make such an interest...hope more people will read this and maybe some DEVs too
probably yes, but given the time and effort required, it would be easier to just have people buy an n900. poeple choose a blackstone because they want winmo/tf3d or whatever
i like to think it like this - if someone found a way to attach a coffee machine to a blackstone, id be interested, but given the time and effort required to get it to work (not to mention practical) i wouldnt be too fussed. anyone who wanted coffee machine functionality might have bought the wrong device
id say lets android working first then maybe work on other linux OSs would be easier
A couple of things:
By default Mer uses LXDE as its desktop but you can switch to Hildon (the n900 UI) using update-alternatives (Google it).
However Hildon uses Clutter which uses GL, and it all runs on Xorg, so unless there's a hardware 3D driver for Xorg for your device you're going to be out of luck I think (unless you like horribly slow and jerky UIs). Afaik there isn't an accellerated 3D Xorg driver for Raphael. Not certain but pretty sure.

WebOS on N1

Is it possibile to port the webOS from palm devices on non palm hardware such the NexusOne? just to know... it would'be great to use any OS on this device
i don't think its possible
I know the N1 lacks a phisical keybord and the WebOS is not for other than Palm devices BUT the N1 is a pretty open platform, so is android...
I know it's a long shot but is it possible to run WebOS on the N1?
or Is it possible to emulate WebOS on android?
Theorically I mean
theoretically, it would be possible... at least to emulate... practically, very hard considering hardware differences...

It's 100% impossible. WebOS isn't open source.
TY guys.
I tought devices were not so different from each other in the guts, apart from the phisical keyboard (wich I think is possible to substitute with a software one) the OS have to deal with the usual hardware (RAM, ROM, CPU etc.).
The fact that webOS is not opensource is the real problem so...
Sorry for the noob questions
Now its opensource. Can we port now?
Now webOS IS open source so we will probably see it on our N1 one day

Saying it is and having the full source are completely different.
well HP is pushing webOS to become opensource so the source will be available eventually and i can guarantee an XDA dev will get it running on an android phone.. probably wont be the nexus one though

[Q] Windows 8 on Dell Streak 7

Has anyone figured out how to get windows 8 on the Dell Streak 7. This owuld be interesting. Can someone try to see if its possible.
You cant, period.
Win8/ARM isnt even available yet
Win8 needs a UEFI bootloader(?)
No drivers
I'm going to take a look at it, but most likely it won't happen.
For get about windows on the streak 7.... It would make more sense to have full ubuntu on this tablet...

agreed...
Thorough there is no Arm version of windows 8 at this moment it will have one mobile version, microsoft work on it ( for getting inside mobile market )
concerning Drivers , like other windows version , drivers are inside because it supporte tegra 3 , so tegra 2 also ( i suppose that , no source)
So yes I think you can .
Question is : How to put it on.
But i join precedent post , i prefer have android 3.2 ( and i would want test 4 if i find tutorial to do it ,thanks if you mp me links ) wich is designed for this wonderful tab ( yes i love it ! but damned I hate the browser installed, and stil no chrome available ...sigh )
I m french man so ... sorry for my poor , bad , ugly english . ( don't report me i do my best ! )
Interesting...Sent from my Dell Streak 7 using xda app-developers app
If you are that desperate for windows on the dell streak 7 look into windows embedded or windows compact embedded (more than likely the one you want) then theme it to look and work like win8 although you will have all kinds of problems with it initially but hey at least its progress... also win8 (yes the RT variant too I believe) is locked to utilise the touch screen features on display ratio's greater than 1366x768 although that could probably be changed with registry patches, so unless you could get it on the streak 7 with native OTG support then you may have some luck if you manage to port the RT variant to the streak in the first place...
TLDR: probably a fair bit of work pulling it from an RT device first then even more pushing it to another
Windows 8 RT (ARM VERSION) will be coming out soon, on the Surface Tab. I'm sure a port of it is going to be possible, maybe not for this device but for other Android devices in the near future.
Hopefully someone will dedicate their time to porting Windows 8 RT onto this device.

that may be the case, but not valid for this argument as nobody has ported wp7 to a device which it wasnt natively designed for.. windows is closed source for the most part, android is open source apart from the odd drivers (majority of OEMs withholding some/most information and/or kernel source) may as well make use of win8 embedded seeing as it is now out
Win8 RT won't be available as a separate system. It will only run on the devices where it is preinstalled by manufacturer. The chance you can run it on another device is pretty close to zero.
But the strongest point - why would anyone want it? A system which is heavilly locked, has no apps, no options to customize, almost no support from developers and apparently no future.
I would appreciate if I could run Ubuntu on my Dell Streak 7. That would turn it into a next generation device with the ability to use all desktop Linux applications.

RT and embedded are completely different, RT wont be run on "custom class" devices while embedded will, that is why you wont see slot machines running anything apart from windows embedded..... which of course you can run unsigned drivers on (extra win factor) so that pesky luna driver wont be an issue if someone decompiles and converts to win
A idea I had to getting win8 running was to install backtrack5 and then run win8 on a VM through vituralbox inside BT5. Only things stopping me at the moment from testing it is getting the mount points swapped around for the system and SD card; because BT5 the VirtualBox and win8 would all need about 17-18GB of room total. As soon as I get them swapped and everything installed I'll give it a try and report back.
I havnt had a chance to check the device manager on a Surface RT, but likely the largest hurdles for win8 on any arm device:
Bootloader: The Surface RT (and likely all windows RT devices) uses UEFI, and all android tablets do not.
Windows RT is essentially Win8core/arm with things removed vs the x86 and x64 versions.
I would expect that it takes advantage of UEFI services during bootup, and we would essentially need a uefi bootloader ported to the S7.
Ram: Win8 doesnt like 512mb ram, arm or not. If we could hypothetically boot it, it would likely not run well.
Display: The S7 has a 800x480 display, which means that all "metro" apps will not run, and as winRT currently has no third party apps, it would be completely crippled.
Drivers: I didnt get a chance to poke around winRT's device manager, but some components may already have drivers.
I would expect that it's like win8/x86 and win8/x64 in that it just needs a working driver and it does not need to be tailored to the specific device.
(for example: if you have the win8/arm driver for a broadcom BCM4330 wifi card, it will work for all winRT devices that use it)
If we hypothecially were able to install winRT, we would likely have no touchscreen drivers and battery drivers.
Also the tegra2 likely wouldnt have platform drivers while the tegra3 does.
Even if you were able to write your own drivers, winRT might require drivers to be signed and there might be no way to disable signature verification on winRT.
I expect that windows update can deliver driver updates in the same way as win8/x86/x64.
WinRT is essentially a "desktop os" and not a "mobile os," you can even repartition a surface RT from within windows like you would expect on win8/x86/x64
On android you could use repartition a live device, but it's simply not designed for it.
Just because it's install media isnt available means very little to us, this is true for wp7 and somewhat true for android.
Granted: if we could run winRT, i'd definitely use it (even if it was crippled by the lack of "metro" apps). Not all of us want desktop linux and would rather stop using the device if we were forced to choose.
looks like win8 embedded is the next best thing if anyone is really that desperate for win8... even then its an issue of drivers
I think it would be better and easier to get ubuntu native on the streak if you want a desktop environment.

[Port Request] OUYA

I would like to see Ubuntu running native on OUYA but my knowledge about porting Linux of any kind to other devices is simply not existant.
Is there anyone able and willing to do it? I think it should be relatively easy to do if you use ubuntu touch for asus transformer infinity (tf700t) to start because it also uses tegra 3 t33 as SoC. The touch enviroment obviously doesn't have to work so if you got time left you could do a preinstalled with KDE for good performance experience.
If tools like CWM or a cyanogenmod are helpfull you should go to the OUYA section of this wonderfull forum, they are avaliable right now.
Thanks for reading. Klindworth

Ubuntu touch was designed for Mobile devices.. OUYA requires you to have a display like a TV or a monitor, if you know where I'm going with this then what you're asking to be done is the same as running Android on a desktop. Just get the normal Ubuntu that's designed for desktops and laptops. Ubuntu touch is only for small devices.
There is no "normal" preinstalled Desktop version of ubuntu with bootloader out there for the OUYA.
Ubuntu touch is still a real linux just with a different kernel like the ARM server editions and another GUI optimized for touch
or am i mistaken?
The benefit of ubuntu touch is the optimized kernel for ARM SOCs like Tegra3 not OMAP 3 or OMAP 4 or the TI ARM structures. With a lot of time and reading and searching i think i should be able to compile one or i could use the kernels already made by canicoal.
Uninstall the touch stuff an installing an alternative GUI and so on shouldn't be the problem.
My biggest Problem is to get it running without an proper boot.img.
Ouya has, like other Android devices, no real bios or efi and the only way i know to change the OS is via ADB in combination with CWM an fastboot to change the system data and the boot.img.
So if anyone knows how to port it i (and many other ouya owners) would be really greatfull if someone would take the time to port a version of ubuntu to the ouya and ubuntu touch seems to be the easiest option.
A tutorial to boot any linux natively on ouya(not chroot or something like that) and change the bootloader would also do it but it would be a lot of work to write one for retards like me

Why would anyone want a mobile operating system on a device like that... Yes, Ubuntu Touch is still real Linux but if you wanna get an OS on OUYA that was designed for small screens and touch then be my guest.. And there already is Ubuntu desktop versions for ARM. You're better off getting the ARM version, stripping it down and putting a simple GUI.
Didn't find a Tegra3 optimized arm version yet and don't know which arm kernel version would be completely compatible. is a kernel optimized for cortex A9 enough? Link??
also the problem of no working bootloader still isn't solved.

You're not going to find a version optimized for Tegra 3 on their site because Ubuntu already recognizes the chip..
I don't wanna sound like an a-hole but the idea is a bit far fetched.. the OS isn't even 100% stable, most core functions are working such as calling, wifi and other stuff.. but okay you get it to work right?, then what?, even if you use a GUI like GNOME which I doubt anybody is gonna want to port (since GNOME is made for desktops and laptops) you're still gonna be very limited. Plus does Ubuntu touch even support HDMI output yet?. There's just too much work for this..
