Hi guys,
I was just wondering, when the JPU (2.2.1) update comes, I would like to upgrade to it from scratch (remove voodoo, hard-reset the phone, etc).
As of now, I have stock 2.2 + voodoo. How do I completely remove voodoo and everything else, and update to 2.2.1 (not just disable voodoo)?
Does the upgrade through KIES remove voodoo?
All I want is a fresh new 2.2.1 phone, as stock.
Many thanks!
Any ideas?

create a disable-lagfix file/folder in /sdcard/Voodoo (/sdcard/Voodoo/disable-lagfix)
and it should disable Voodoo. alternatively you can disable it via recovery. it does the same thing. (creating a file).
when 2.2.1 is out(if ever), Kies should be able to upgrade without a hitch though i've never personally used it.
it's best to remove all lagfixes and tweaks and all that funny custom stuff prior to upgrading if you're aimming to be "clean".

Thanks, but what I was aiming for was a totally clean phone.
Meaning no disable-lagfix folder in sdcard. Just clean, stock phone.
Does the firmware update fix that or is there a way to achieve that?
Unless I'm mistaken, you first need to disable lagfix as described above. After this, you need to flash a new kernel which doesn't include voodoo or another lagfix. If you're flashing stock JPU or any other stock firmware, that will take care of your problem.

Hi,
I recently disabled supercurio's voodoo lagfix on my Bell's I9000M with success (ie. everything's back under rfs). However, I still have his kernel on my machine. How do I revert back to the standard, stock kernel?
I'm quite new to the whole business of Android firmware "hacking".
You will have to flash the stock (JH2) kernal, but I do not know where to find the stock kernal. Maybe someone can provide a link to it.

It is my understanding too. I guess an update.zip with the proper kernel would be all the I would require and it wouldn't erase my system.
You can flash some of the custom kernals others have made into a update.zip. But if you want the original JH2 kernal, You will probably have to flash the whole ROM via Odin. I have not seen the original kernal in update.zip format, maybe someone else might get us a link to it. I would also like to get rid of Voodoo on my phone and go back to stock. I'm affraid of losing my internal SD.

How do I flash with Odin the original JH2? Can I extract the required files from the Kies install directories? I don't mind reflashing everything.

If you are gonna flash it all...you might as well just flash the latest 2.1 which is JM8. The "how to's" can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 but I do not see where to download JH2 or JM8.
Here is where to download JM8 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780867

I got the I900UGJH2.rar file and I'm currently flashing it with Odin. Wish me luck! First time doing that kind of thing.
Let me know how it goes and where you got the file. I will be doing this soon also.
Also, I think you have to repartition with 512 pit to get rid of the Voodoo. I dont know if uninstalling Voodoo with disable folder/file gets rid of th ext4 completely.

Just an update to say that the flashing went well and I'm now back to the state my phone was when I got it.

EDIT: I'm on JM5, do i have to reflash JM2 to get froyo, cause Kies doesn't let me upgrade

Use the registry hack found here to get kies to do the upgrade. Remove the lagfix before flashing

As it was mentioned in other threads, yes you have to. I'm not sure though if it applies to all of plethora of lag fixes out there, but it is always a gooooooood idea to remove modifications before trying to do something official with you phone, better to be on the safe side.
As for the JM5 I don't know but I suspect that if Kies doesn't recognize that firmware it will not let you do anything, i.e. if you flashed ROM from other region. But thats only a guess.
Cheers.
EDIT: Bah I've been forestalled :F

you should be able to flash over but it is considered good practice to start from stock, also i think you need ji6 froyo before jj4 froyo which cog2.3b* are based on, so the accepted proper procedure is masterclear and flash jf6 from the one click installer get android id with android id changer, flash ji6, also a one click installer, and then flash cognition. all with odin. you can clockwork recovery flash cognition but it is another proceedure to root ji6. after cognition is installed reinstall android id changer and load the id from the stock rom.
i usually flash over without lashing to stock ect unless the flash over has issues. and overclocking is handled in the kernel you need to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828052
with odin, no .pit file needed just drop file in the pda slot and flash in download mode. overclocking is enabled by default so you need set cpu to manage it.
there is a link to an app to manage under volting, my settings are -50mv low and -75 high. it also handles the scheduler, i use cfq. anticipatory seems to work eqaully well. some suggest deadline and it may be better real world but i dont see it in benchmarks. and real world is too subject to placebo effect and coincidence.
this kernel also has a universal lag fix handled in clockworkmod recovery which replaces the stock recovery. best setting for that is no rfs jfs overkill but in the advanced settings disable bind to dbdata. it's fast! 17.299 mflops in linpack, and it's the first time that i have had a lagfix improve a linack score(at least it appears to)
Here is the steps that got me from ji6 2.2 to cog.
First if you don't already get titanium back up and back up all of your apps you don't want to loose and copy the file to your computer and remove external SD card if you have one.
Then i used the 2.1 version of odin one click to go back to 2.1 after that do a master clear then root your phone and down load rom manager. Using rom manager flash the clockwork recovory mod.
Next download cognition 2.3b3 then go back to rom manager and select install rom from sd card and find your cog rom you just down loaded and it will do the rest
Once cog is on your phone you can put you titanium backup file back on your phone and redown load titanium backup and restore all of your apps.

Check out the Cog wiki.

If you have clockwork installed, you can install over any rom. I would clear data to be on the safe side, though.

no you cant. it will only work if he has 2e recovery kernel. if it was the ji6 leak then it is running 3e recovery and no matter how hard you try, it wont boot into clockwork.
answer:
use the ODIN version of cognition. doesnt matter what rom you are on...
Ok so I am trying to flash cog via oden. I downloaded the file and am looking at the how to on the wiki but, in the wiki it says that all the files will be in the download Odin.exe PIT.pit PDA.tar PHONE.tar CSC.tar. The only files that I am seeing are the pda file the odin.exe and the pit file none of the other ones. Is this normal?

Yes. That's what is supposed to be there. That's all you need for that particular rom

Cool thanks a lot for your help. Just to make sure before I do this. I did a back up using tibu, Im going to pull the sim, open odin, and flash. Is it really that easy or am I missing something? Thanks guys I really appreciate it.

Cool gonna do it now. Will post results
Ok just flashed and that went well, but it wont let me open any apps. For example when I try to open up tibu it tells me I have to force close. I also dont have 3g
i dont know if there that is a common issue, but im sure you will need to reflash. you may want to flash to stock.
it's a multi step procedure and annoying but it is usually safer , i guess i got lucky.
i dont know for sure if you need to flash ji6 before cog 2.3b, design gears may have fixed that, i didn't read the details of why it was needed.
i would;
(optional)master clear, remove sim and sdcard. you will loose everything including titanium backups and posibly nand backups. master clear is done with the phone booted normally.
flash jf6
flash cognition 2.2 by meathod of your choice (so you have root and clockwork recovery)
flash cog 2.3b3 in clockwork mod recovery.
I don't know iflosing every thing is worth it for me, I really do want to flash this rom and try it out, but right now seems risky, I flashed back to froyo that I was running before. I thibk I'm going to do some more research and see what I can find. Thanks for all your help guys
Hello.
I currently have a 2.2 galaxy s firmware witch i got using kies. I added the voodoo lagfix kernel to it.As i have read in the description, clockwork mod doesn't work with voodoo, so i'm stuck using odin for updating.
So, for the question: Is it safe to upgrade to 2.2.1 from Kies? And, moreover, how can I flash a costum rom like darky's or cyanogen? (i'm not sure about them).
P.S. How can I come back to stock 2.2 and delete the Voodoo kernel
Please help,
Thanks
create a folder within the Voodoo folder called "disable_lagfix" then restart the phone, it should convert back to RFS from EXT4 and return the rom to normal (ie. no lagfix applied)
once this is done, download whatever rom you want (JPY is the latest uk OFFICIAL relese i believe) or create your desired rom within Doc's Kitchen....
So, for the question: Is it safe to upgrade to 2.2.1 from Kies?
Yes otherwise it would not be offered by Samsung .
And, moreover, how can I flash a costum rom like darky's or cyanogen? (i'm not sure about them).
READ each post for instructions .

You should be SURE before flashing custom ROM. Read and collect as much information from their thread. This will minimize the risk for you to repeat same problems others have had...
Cheers...
Ok I read a lot about rooting and tried CF-root. Now I figured I'll revert to an older stock XXJPU with pit etc. Won't that remove root and completely wipe my phone? Or do I have to revert to the original 2.2 that came with my phone?

You don't have to revert to the original 2.2 - go for the 2.2.1 (JS5) and you won't even need any lagfix.
Flashing will remove root and will wipe your settings and apps so don't forget to backup.
Enjoy your SGS.

Thank you for your response.
Yea I've flashed it with JS5 now (with voodoo lagfix) and it's very responsive.
I'm experiencing some force closes on certain apps though.. Either way it's the best phone I've used and indeed a very fun gadget.
