What method gives better performance in swap? I use Swapper 2 and it stutters every once in a while when it gives superuser permissions to Swapper 2. Would it stutter if i used userinit.sh or another app? I'm using CM5.0.8 and have a 32Mb ext4 partition on the sdcard.

I am liking the Hero software and will diff be putting it on my Mytouch when some figures out how to root that phone.
1. I thought I would have more internal mem from the G1 after I did the part on the memory card in console? Hero running laggy and I thought the apps would run from my memory card ?
2. Bluetooth, notification lights not working when I recieve texts?
3. Laggy laggy lol it's awsome software

1. They should run from the SD if it is correctly set up. You should be running with a linux-swap partition also. JAC says to not use anything bigger than 32mb but I have mine at 128mb with swappiness at 60 and haven't seen a loading screen since first boot.
2. BT and LED are not working in any Hero build. JAC is getting closer to getting BT fixed, and I bet LED is next.
3. The lag should abate soon after adjusting you swap settings (The swappiness is set in the a2sd.sh file)
i did a fat32, ext2, and linux-swap part in the console
Please explain #3?
So you can abd pull the a2sd.sh and adjust the swappiness settings from there and push it back?
As for A2SD still using up space, I believe the phone needs to be restarted for apps to be moved to the ext partition.
How can I tell if the apps are running the sd card? I thought the JACHeroski 2.7.4 already had the swapper in it?
I have a 8gb sc card did this Fat32 6936 Ext2 7448 Linux-swap 7576
I did take the twitter and books marks widgets off the main screen seems to be quicker...I would like optimize my G1 so the rom runs smooth, so far i like the rom

If you don't have ADB, then type in the terminal:
$su
#cp /system/bin/a2sd /sdcard
Open the file in a text editor from your computer and change the echo 30 > swappiness value to whatever swapiness you want (Mine is 60 but I have a bigger swap partition. If you only have a 32mb partition I would leave it at 30, but I would recomnmend having 64mb and changing it to 60 swappiness)
then save to file back to the root of you sd card and type in terminal again:
$su
#mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
#cp /sdcard/a2sd /system/bin/a2sd
#reboot
and your swap settings are updated !
Cool thanks, I am actually going to take the 8Gb out and put in a 1gb, I am going to be selling the phone soon. Will the 1GB work for the apps to sd transfer?

Yes and no. It will work, but very slowly. The stock 1gb card is very slow.
Having an issue with this process:
Open the file in a text editor from your computer and change the echo 30 > swappiness value to whatever swapiness you want (Mine is 60 but I have a bigger swap partition. If you only have a 32mb partition I would leave it at 30, but I would recomnmend having 64mb and changing it to 60 swappiness)

/system/bin/a2sd
as stated earlier, yo copy it to your sd card
Code:
su
cp /system/bin/a2sd /sdcard
Then edit the file and save it back to the card
Then use this command to push it back, then reboot.
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/a2sd /system/bin/a2sd
reboot
Just make sure that after you've edited it and want to save you don't save it as a text file, which would add .txt

Don't worry about running 2.7.4 until it's completely refined. I am running 2.7.3 with a 64 mg swap partition and it is SUPERFAST with 6 home screens being used, with widgets on them all:

hey guys, i would just like to make sure that my settings are correct. i have a 32mb linux-swap partition.
im running cyanogen ROM and my swap place (on swapper) is /sdcard/swapfile.swp
Under advanced preferences, i checked the option of "Use Swap Partition" with the swap partition of dev/block/mmcblkop3
i always get a swapfile.swp in my fat32 partition.
thanks
Pretty sure linux-swap is automatic with the cyanogen's...
Nah, compcache is automatic on all new cm roms, but I found that it causes me the coma issuse on wake with it so I just use swap for it instead
ok im confused. so swapper and compcache do the same job? if so, then ill just uninstall swapper

If compcache is automatic, and you want to use linux-swap, you need to extract the user.conf from /system/bin, change the settings (the instructions are in there), and then push it back over. But if you're already satisfied with the performance, leave the tweaking to those who are more knowledgeable.
yeah im satisfied with the performance. ok i just uninstalled swapper. so about compcache.... correct me if im wrong, but my cache is currently being stored into my internal memory. i believe this is so cause i would always have to go to manage applications to clear cache
compcache has nothing to do with your caches. Compcache is a set of modules that compresses paged data to allow you to "extend' the available memory. goto google, apply fu.
ok so i made a linux-swap partion on my sd card that is 64mb. Now do i need to activate it somehow? or does cynogen do it for me? i tried to search but couldnt find. also do i need update my radio? it is 2.22.19.26I
You need user.conf and userinit.sh files on your ext partition. There's a guide on how to set that up here.
ok and can i have compcache and linux-swap at the same time? or do they do the same thing? also do i need to make a partion for compcache? and i cant find the htc keyboard in 4.2.3.1, does it come with it?
i thought if you have 4.2.3.1 you didnt have to add the files as it does everything for you? am I missing something.
is compcache and linux swap the same thing? and do we need both?

lol, no.
Swap is virtual memory. It uses a seperate partition to act as extra RAM, but it's nowhere near comparable to real RAM.
Compcache compresses what's in the RAM, so there's more space to cram files in. The problem is constantly compressing and decompressing files in RAM puts a heavy strain on the CPU.
so do i need to put the usernit files on or did this rom already do it?
does anyone know how to use the user.config app to do this?

You DO NOT have to add any user int files to your sd for swap to work.
Its already rolling if you installed correctly.
go to terminal and use the print command to view your allocated spaces for each ext
Better yet, use the "free" command to see if it is really being used. I am pretty sure Cynanogen does not use a swap partition by default. It needs to be enabled. A easy way to check and setup your swap it to download swapper.
When I type free in the terminal I see 0 for total, used and free swap. I made an ext4 and a 32mb swap partition on my sd card. How do I enable swap on Cyanogen 4.2.5?

UFS
XFS
EXT 2/3/4
FUSE
NFS
RAMZSWAP
SQUASHFS
but it can`t create swap file! also i have sd-ext visible in root explorer and when i check to use extended prtition instead swap file it say:
turning swap off partition FAIL
swapoff: /sd-ext/: is a directory
formating swap partition FAIL
mkswap can`t open '/sd-ext/': is a directory
Hello. I have installed CM 7.2.0 (R3) have applied OC kernel, Partitioned an SD Card and Installed Darktremor Apps2SD. I set the size for Ext3 1GB and for Swap 0MB. I followed the tutorial and everything went according to it. It even stores all .APK files un SD-EXT. But still I`m getting low disk space notification and can`t install no more apps.
I tried to re-install ROM several times and made all actions but the result is the same.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
have u apply the a2sd command on terminal emulator?
open terminal, write:
su
a2sd check
a2sd zipalign
a2sd cachesd
reboot
sent from Nokia 3310
or u can use ungaze script.
it's simple than darktremor.

if you have apps installed on sdcard first move them to internal memory then move them all by the command in terminal emulator also move the dalvik cache to sd because dalvik cache alone consume about 60 mb of internal space i will suggest you to use link2sd because it is an app and u can move the app which you want a2sd script will move all the app automatically
