Much thanks once again!
Blacks are so sexy on this phone, beyond just looking great(where's the screen, where's the casing, I don't know!) and the power savings.
Hmm this is odd, I'm having issues.
ADB Push is giving me permission denied.
I also have Root Explorer and made sure /system/app is read/write access.
I also tried using Root Explorer to move the gmail.apk to /system/app and rebooting several times and nothing. Gmail app won't start at all.
Also tapping on gmail.apk to try to install it to /system/data gives a, "installation not succeed"
I have root working just fine, do I need to install the unsecure boot image?

Okay so I followed the steps, except I just did it with root explorer since I don't have a computer by me. The new gmail.apk just kept saying that it would not install so I put the old one back, and now that one won't install either. Help please?

Delete gmail.apk and gmail.odex from system/app with root explorer.
then dont install the black version just copy and paste in into system/app and reboot

Definately would work with a pc and adb. but glad your back to normal for now. let me know how it turns out with the pc
Yeah this is weird. Before I had to do it in recovery and adb push, and it worked.
Now with the updated gmail i tried that, and it won't push, i move it with root explorer, rebooted, and gmail isn't detected.
keeps giving me permission denied again.
I think we need an updated root.

Fixed it again by going to recovery, and mounting both /system/ and /data/ then the adb push worked (while in recovery) now gmail is detected and works.
Long story short, gmail kept freezing on me so I used Titanium to uninstall it and now gmail doesn't show up in the market and the apk's that I download don't give me the option to install them.
Any ideas?
I was able to get the Android email program to sync with gmail, but I still can't figure out how to get the actual gmail program back on.
Sorry, didn't mean to hit "Thanks". Don't know where you got the gmail apks, but try putting one of them in system/app then reboot.
You also might want to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937752 but just run the commands for gmail

I assume you're running stock rooted.
Try this,
1. Download the signed Gapps.zip from here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642189 its in the second post.
2. Now from the zip file you downloaded. Extract the Gmail.apk and GmailProvider.apk. Using root explorer. Copy those files into system/app
(of course make sure you mount r/w)
4. Reboot your nook and you should have Gmail again.
Make sure you back everything up as always.
It worked for me. Hope it works for you as well.

I'd recommend doing what racks11479 said. But to see the system folder, get Root Explorer. It lets you see the deeper folders. Just don't break anything while you are down there.

You might not have the correct permissions set.
If you are able to ADB to your device. I've modified the honeycomb market install script from "jleecong" @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937752 for the Eclair Gmail only.
All you gotta do is extract the zip to your adb directory and run (double click) "GmailInstall.cmd" and you should be good to go.
**As always *Use at your own risk* and make sure you've backed up.**
Hope this works for you.

Wondering if the gmail from eclair might be the answer to a similar problem I have. Been rooted since version 1.0 and gmail app would sync nicely. Rooted 1.1 using the nookdev instructions and that is working fine except gmail simply doesn't sync unless I go into accounts, reenter my account data and the sync screen comes up and then it'll sync. The android email app works just fine. Syncs seamlessly. So would replacing things help?
You could always google it

Question about your script.... I have a Nook Color that I have rooted and all set up. I'd like to pass it over to my buddy, but need to change my gmail info for his. Would this essentially allow me to do that without having to unroot, restore, reroot then reregister?
I am looking for a way to completely root a device with my B&N and gMail info, then allow someone else to register/set-up the device with their info. Possible?
If you just go into settings and About Device and do a "Erase and Deregister" you should still have root. And once rebooted they will have the option of registering the device for the first time.
They will have to go through the LogicZoom welcome process as well. So you might want to guide them in that direction if they don't know what needs to be done to get youtube and market working for the first time.
I've just done it myself to see if it works and yes it does.
Please use my suggestions as a guide. All actions you take are "solely your responsibility"
Just make sure you do a backup "just in case" before you try this.

Thanks, I will try this again with them. I wish I could be in person, but this is a phone support situation for me (grrr).
From the way they described to me, the "Erase and Deregister" worked for the B&N part but my gmail account was still there. So it didn't completely remove their stuff. Google Talk and the Calendar are still stuck on my gmail and not theirs.
Will try again though, and if anyone else has input I would appreciate it, thanks!

I renamed my the stock Gmail.apk to Gmail.apk.old and the same for the stock GmailProvider.apk.
Then I did as you suggested through Root Explorer. Now I have no Gmail at all in my apps list after a reboot.
I tried to launch it directly from Root Explorer but it says "There was an error parsing the package."
I renamed the new files Gmail.apk.new and GmailProvider.apk.new and renamed old files back to their original. I rebooted and Gmail popped up again in my apps list.
Why did your method for the new Gmail files work for someone else but not for me? What went wrong?
I'm using the Serendipity ROM and it has been awesome for me. My only complaint is the reskinning of the GMail application. Is there a way I can revert this back to the stock look?
Also is there an easy, free way to have full screen contact images when receiving or on a phone call?
Uninstall Gmail with titanium backup/SDK
Reboot
Install Gmail from market
If you are familiar with adb:
adb shell
su
(accept superuser prompt on phone)
rm /system/app/Gmail.apk
Now you can go in the Market and download the original from there.
Sent from my Captivate
edit: Nicely done Mikey. (and nice ROM while I'm at it)
adb shell
su
busybox mount -o rw,remount /system
rm /system/app/Gmail.apk
reboot
I used titanium backup to remove gmail. That's actually a pretty awesome it lets me uninstall anything i want. Anyways, Gmail is gone. Now that I try to install from the market place i get, "Install unsuccessful". When I click that it says "Incompatible Version".
You didn't reboot.
It appears I need to learn how to read directions. Thanks a ton. Now everything is nearly how I wish it could be.
Do you possibly know of a free solution to my second question?
Nope. 10char

Just in case any of you are like me and prefer the 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) Email app better than the 3.0.0.1 (Honeycomb) Email app, I thought I would share the APK.
Some ROMs have the Honeycomb email app installed by default, and for me it does not play nice when you are not in a good data area or on WiFi.
Warning, this is intended for 2.3+ ROMs, not Froyo...
I installed it by following this process:
1. Use Titanium Backup to uninstall the Email app
2. Use Root Explorer to move the attached Email.apk into the /system/app folder in R/W mode
3. Reboot
4. Goto Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Email to clear all app data
5. Setup your email account settings, and viola!
Someone else may have a better method. If so, speak up.
Hope this helps...
Email.apk is stock 2.3.3
Email.2.apk is what is delivered with CM7 as of 9/20/11

Awesome, guys!
Glad I could help.
I used adb to take the existing file, push it to /system/app/
Then mounted as rw
changed group to root (was showing sdcard)
chmod to 755
mv -p back to sdcard
remounted as ro
Then went to root explorer
mount as rw
ran Email.apk (ran as an installer)
when prompted I selected DONE (open will give FC)
mount as ro
Went to Titanium backup, where Email now showed in backup history. Clicked to install (Only choice was data only).
opened terminal emulator
su
sync
reboot
email now works
I may have done some un-needed steps, but that is what worked for me.
I made the stupid mistake of moving the original Email.apk to my SD card with a mv command and borked the ownership and group ownership, as well as the permissions of the file.
So far all is working great, and email push works just great!
Thanks!
JT
How can you tell what version is installed?
Edit: Got it.

Froyo uses a different framework. Custom apps like this can't be ported across rom versions.

Having a similar issue wherein when I try to "show only contacts with a phone number" I get a force close as well. I did backup/uninstall Yahoo authenticator, so I assume this is the issue as well.
I already can't wait for just a clean GB rom. So much of the bloatware on this phone seems tied in to the OS in weird ways.

Woah, how did you restore them? Are you sure they actually installed, or did you just move the app into system/app?
I fixed it! Thank god!
I FIXED IT!!!!
I had ALSO removed the blur_yahoo.apk from the list as well as AdService.apk along with the dreaded YahooContacts.apk.
I DID move them all back and changed the permissions for the YahooContacts.apk.
After much screwing around with the dalvik-cache, trying to replace the file correctly, rename things, name the yahoo contacts thing correctly, I finally did a full system reset from the bootloader and lo and behold NOTHING.
It fixed NOTHING.
Contacts still broken.
I logged back in to the phone and the damn thing still wouldn't work. I then opened the apps folder to prepare to move everything back and change it all back to stock so I can unroot and prep to take it in to VZW...I noticed the permissions for the other blur_***.apk's were still set incorrectly...specifically yahoo...I replaced all of the .apk files from backups along with their .odex files, but I neglected to correct the OTHER permissions. I fixed the other permissions, tried, still no dice...I rebooted and then BAM!!! IT WORKED! CONTACTS COMES UP NOW!
I AM SO DAMN EXCITED!

Forgot to post...here is the fix, restore these files and set correct permission, reboot and presto Contacts fixed
Sorry, just got around to checking this now. Glad to see the community got a fix in place. I hope some of my information came in handy for someone or maybe even contributed to constructing a fix.
Glad to hear this issue is resolved! Damn Yahoo app...why is this tied into Contacts at all?
now my com.android.calendar FC when I try to add an event, it worked before.
What am I missing now? :/ lol one thing fixes and another breaks...under settings...applications...all there is a service called Calendar Service and shows up as 0.00B, I need to know what this corresponds with and I may have solved my issue.
