[Q] SGS Appears As READ ONLY CD-ROM Drive - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Weird enough, My SGS appears as a READ-ONLY CD-ROM drive when it's connected through USB. "The USB Storage Is In Use Screen" is on. Able to read the files in my internal SD card, but can't write any.
Under device manager, it shows up as Android UMS CD-ROM Drive.
Please help.

Which custom kernel are you using, I'm gussing you're on JPU...

Yes you are right, I am on JPU.
Using the Darky's 5.5 ROM over here
is this a common problem?

Flash http://project-voodoo.org/downloads/Voodoo-jpu_test-5.0.2-Froyo-GT-I9000-odin-pda.tar via ODIN as PDA, should fix the problem
Alternativly, you can flash http://project-voodoo.org/downloads/stock+Voodoo-5.0.2-Froyo-GT-I9000-unsigned-update.zip as update.zip from CWM (vol up, power + middle button) To place the file on your internal card, you can use CWM to mount the phone, OR place the file on an external sd card, and copy it over OR download the file directly onto your phone.

I actually found this,
I have problems mounting the sdcard on my pc, or it shows as a cddrive
This is Fixed in V5.5. otherwise use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=5741
If it you can acces it but can't write to it from your pc try to disable usb debugging.
Can it be the problem?

Can't see that link

Opps. it's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9804784&postcount=5741
I actually have the Voodoo lagfix installed, the links you gave me are they lagfixes too?

Problem fixed with the link above. Simple Thanks!

Write-Protected internal SD (Found problem)

Hi,
I'm using Darky's 5.5 Rom and after flashing the Advanced Voodoo 5 v1.1 Final final kernal. I can't change files on my internal SD, when I try to use mass storage and copy files, I get the error cannot copy due to "Write-protected".
I did a search and didn't get any hits
Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks
EDIT: Nevermind, its a known problem in Advanced Voodoo 5 v1.1 Final that the internal SD mounts as a cd drive.
Hi there, question you mentioned that the problem has been solved?
Can you point me into the right direction please?
Thanks.

Look on the first page of the Darky Gingerbread thread, there is a link to "Known problems" -- one of them is the SD card issue .. basically the int SD is being mounted with the wrong permissions. There is a zip to fix those permissions.
My problem was that since I couldn't even WRITE to my card, how the hell could I put the zip on my card ....
Two solutions:
a) Bluetooth transfer
b) Easier -- go to Market and install DropBox .. do the same on your PC , then you can swap files back and forth between phone and PC without connecting via USB.
hope this helps

[Q] Cannot Copy Files

Hi,
When i try to copy files to my Galaxy S, i get the message "cannot copy files". And when i try to acces the internal storage, the connection is lost.
I have this problem since yesterday, and i cannot copy anything on it. Because the connection breaks off. I have android 2.2.1 on it. I have reformatted the internal storage trough the phone, but the problem stays.
Is my internal storage broken, or is it just a software problem. Because yesterday i had installed Recovery 2e, and i think that's the problem
Also, when i try to put the phone in USB debugging mode, the internal storage is also not accessible, because it's read only. (my laptop shows the internal storage as a cd-rom drive)
it's very easy to tell if the internal SD is dead or not by flashing back to a stock ROM
like JH2 or JM8
then see if you can copy stuff to it
if all works, then you can flash back to a 2.2 ROM and see if everything is okay
once confirmed, then you can flash back to any Custom ROM
i now have the official FROYO.XXJPY 2.2.1 Rom installed. I will try to flash back.

FCs galore and USB storage wont allow changes

Gday, Well I have spent 3 days searching, researching, trying, flashing, rooting, rummaging and swearing... and am back to exactly where I started, so going to go out on a limb, and ask for help:
I have my sisters old Galaxy S I9000, when booted up it force closes pretty much everything, all her apps she has on it, all google related apps including Market.
Factory reset via phone (privacy menu) option, recovery menu option, and dialler code option do nothing. By that I mean they say they are working, the phone reboots, yellow text suggests everything is being formatted and wiped, and then it reboots to exactly the same state.
I have flashed various 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 firmwares, same result.
I have trie to flash custom ROMs, but can't because of the other problem; the USB storage appears to always stay unchanged no matter what I try to remove from it, or add to it (eg. zip files for installing). On my PC I can see the rive, and I can drag/drop zip files to it, I can even delete all the folders if I want, but when I disconnect the cable, the USB Storage in the phone is EXACTLY the same as it was before I connected it to the PC....
SOOOOOOOOOOO Frustrated....
I've searched high and low, forums galore, many seem to have had one problem or another, but nobody seems to have had exactly the same problems in their entirity. Even the forum I read about fixing the 'protected' USB storage suggested flashing a patch, which is a zip file, which is impossible for me to do as I can't write to the USB storage...
Your insight/wisdom/assistance o nthis matter would be GREATLY appreciated! Cheers in anticipation..
By the way, I am definitely talking about USB storage, the internal type, not my external sd card, I have had that removed for the last day or so to avoid any confusion. I currently have XXJPY 2.2.1 on the phone if that helps bt can change it to anything else that s Odin flashable if need be.
You say you had a patch thats a zip... If you have the external sd card put it on that, and then go recovery and install the zip, or however else you need to. Does it need to be on the internal sd card?
Or do you mean you can apply the zip but because you cant write to it it makes no difference?
Any chance your still on stock firmware then?
I can put zip on external SD card but when i choose install zip from card within recovery menu it shows USB storage folder, not external SD contents. Can't put zip file on USB storage as it wont let me write to it (even though it shows on my PC as having been added ok, at least up until i remount)
If xxjpy is stock firmware then i might be, but have tried several others and had same result. If u can recommend a different firmware ill happily dload and flash.
Im running darkcore, and the rom you see below, im not sure which CWM this is but i just checked with update from zip/sdcard and yes it showed me the internal sd card but just look for external sd, itll appera like everything else and i could go into it. So if it doesn't work in your current recovery menu, try install another one.
I've tried a few different recovery versions now, none show external SD card contents. But if i understand ur post correctly, ur suggesting that the external SD card shows within the USB storage list, like one of the folders on the USB storage? If that is the case, the only one it could be is /SD? But there is nothing in that, whereas there are several folders and zip files on my external SD card...

[Q] After formatting internal SD with NTFS it can't mount nor format even with CWM

It happened after formatting it with NTFS (it was a temporary thing so I can use it with one of Microsoft services), and my device is working and rebooting properly without any error messages..So what can I do now to make my SD working again?
(I don't really need the data that was on it, I just need the card to work)
Thanks..

try formatting the card from within CWM, i presume if you boot up the phone you can't mount/unmount it and subsequently format it from within Android.
but i would try fromating it as FAT32 from within Windows 7 first, NTFS is not supported by Android to the best of my Knowladge...
Thanks, yes I can't format it in Android since i can't mount it, I've already tried formatting it from CWM with no luck, it showed this:
Formatting /sdcard...
Error mounting /sdcard!
Skipping format...
Done.
And windows doesn't see the card at all when I connect phone to PC, so I can't use windows to format it too.

Try a formatting tool or recovery tool in My Android Collections
olaf2k4
Turned out you're right, the problem is android not being able to handle NTFS properly, I tried to format external SD card with NTFS to see what will happen, and I had the EXACT same symptoms, but of course I removed from phone and had it formatted using card reader and it's working properly now with my phone..
xsenman
The problem now is that windows can't see internal card at all, I've tried one of format tools form the link you put, but it didn't help since phone "doesn't allow" windows to detect the memory, any other way to do it? right now I'm trying this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1724078
It seems like it isn't easy to install NTFS support from the link above (since you need fuse.ko file that should be compiled for both your device and ROM), is there any kernal that support NTFS or any other easy way to do it?
If you are talking about your external sd just format at fat32. This is standard for sdcards and your phone wil reconize your card..
Unfortunately it is the internal one..

Finally, I found a solution, just do the following (I tried it and it worked):
1. First install the drivers ONLY if you haven`t already installed them, also if you have Kies installed there is no need to install these drivers, but you are better off installing these anyway : http://dev-host.org/ZRA
2. Download this package (it includes i9000 stock rom+kernel+odin) : http://dev-host.org/RAE, if you have a Captivate or a Vibrant just download a stock rom for your phone model and find a kernel which has root and cwm in it.
NOTE : The next step will require using the 3 key combo for accessing the clockworkmod recovery and also the download mode. The 3 key combo used below is for the Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000. If you own a Captivate or a Vibrant please click this link and choose your phone model to see what 3 key combo must be used, as it differs from one phone model to another : http://tinyurl.com/6q6ajpx
3. After you have extracted all the contents you downloaded and installed drivers, put your phone into download mode using the 3 key combo : volume DOWN + home button+power button, keep those pressed until it goes into download mode.
4. Connect phone to PC via USB Cable and open Odin (windows should detect the phone and install some drivers, after it`s finished you should see the message "Added!" in Odin which means Odin succesfully detected your phone so now you are ready to flash)>check Re-Partition Option>press PIT button and browse for the s1_odin_20100512.pit file, press BOOTLOADER button and browse for the APBOOT… file, press PDA button and browse for the CODE….file, press PHONE button and browse for the MODEM….file, press CSC button and browse for the GT-I9000-CSC….file. PRESS START button and wait for the green pass notification in Odin.
• When the phone reboots into the rom, wait for the setup wizard to appear and then just use the 3 key combo into the download mode again.
Close Odin and open it again> press PDA button and browse for CF-Root…file> Press START button and wait for the green pass notification in Odin.

No need to do all this.
Just:
- remove external sd card (if you have one inserted)
- reboot into CWM-based recovery
- mounts and storage
- mount USB storage
You will be able to see and format, FAT32, the disk using windows

Are u able to wipe data/factory reset? If u are able to do so do it and then follow my procedure... if u are not able, try to follow my procedure more carefully. It is the only thing I can suggest, sorry

I tried your method, but selecting "Mount USB" was throwing the error i mentioned in my last post. Though i solved it eventually. Somehow i ended up in the phone's own recovery/bootloader menu, had an option of "Low level format" there. Took around an hour or so .. but it worked :good:

burnt internal memory

Hello! First sorry of my english!
I have i9000 internal memory of his burnt. As a result, the device turns on only to symbolize Samsung Dwonload Mode and Recovery. I found a solution to put an external sd card partitioned and install ROM through Odin and then error correction dbdata file then the device increases. I Divided with minitool partition but the device did not initilaze. So i installed Recovery blue cwm that comes with cm10.1 (do not remember the version of Recovery) partitions divided his card and rose with the beauty device Orange Rom 2.3.5. currently i have a problem access to my files and when i run camera you get an error "Turn off USB storage". I found solutions to Root the device and install on your computer myphoneexplorer and through root explorer installed on your device. Then access the device via root explorer etc folder name change or replace the file vold.fstab the same file, but the device instruction set that gives access to an external card if it is inside. I did it but without success.
Would appreciate help on this issue and if I was wrong for the whole process I will be happy to correct Thank you very much!
