*deep breath* I apologize in advance to the mods if this starts off yet another ROM flamestorm, but here goes.
I was running the original leaked froyo build, but it was having issues with slowness and just not being responsive, so I decided to look into something more up to date for my phone.
Did a bunch of quick reading and decided that Perception seemed to be rich on features, and being on beta 9 a good history of active dev support, so I loaded it up.
...
what I got reminded me of something a PC warez group would put out for a keygen app. I don't want to see an advertisement for the dev on the lock screen, etc. Don't want to put down the efforts the dev(s) put into the release, but it's got waaaaay too much bling for my taste.
Can anyone give recommendations for a ROM that's solid, and actively maintained to add in new features to benefit it - that doesn't have a bunch of l33t bling?
Once again apologies if this caused headaches for the mods, but asking general consensus that does keep current on dev for this device and explaining what I don't want seems to be an efficient way to do this.
Thanks
Other than that advertisement on the lockscreen did anything else bother you?
you CAN flash different lockscreens
All custom roms have their own personality. I think based on your comments you may like assonance. Be aware though that the top bar had a ginger bread look.
Axura is nice but the boot screen does say axura

Assonance. No advertising anywhere that I've seen, and it's a very good ROM.
Sent from my Android using the power of my dreams.
to be honest, the entire procedure of loading up that rom annoyed me from the beginning. Between some female robot voice saying things I couldn't quite understand while it was doing...something. To the huge logo screen that came up during the load/boot process, to the additional of a dozen or so urban-sounding ringtones that weren't part of the original leaked froyo I was running (yes I know I can go in and delete any offending ringtones) to the fact that it seems any stock wallpapers that weren't garish were removed (solid colours, please?) To the animated advertising on the lock screen, which pushed me over the edge.
I admit I was guilty of not researching in depth, I might have known in advance what I was getting in to. My phone was getting so chunky in just navigating screens and attempting to make phone calls, I needed something. And while I was going thru the hassle, I decided I'd try to get something solid loaded on it.
My phone is my workhorse, I just want something solid, functional and dependable. I have no desire to show it off. I have a Viewsonic G-Tablet that is my playtoy that's I customize and put all the bling on.
But my phone, I want it lean, mean and a bit more functional than the stock Android.
All i900 roms have those ring tones.
Wall papers are all over the internet
As mentioned assonance had no advertisement, or branding
The voices on boot are part of voodoo. The lag fix. really it is a comfort thing. as long as she says something every so often you know things are progressing. Without it you will be wondering why your phone is taking 6 minute to boot

Try this ROM here. Super stable and very good on battery life.

Give the Devs a break. They put a lot of time into making this ROMs and they don't get paid, they do it cuz they like it. You don't have to rant about it, just uninstall it and get something else. And like mcord11758 said, you can customize the lockscreen and ringtones and you can get any wallpaper you want from the internet. An the voice thing only happens the first time you boot up when its applying the lagfix.
I have only tried Cognition (beta 6). There is a boot screen that says cognition, but that's it. You can change boot screens if you want. I feel its a great mix of vanilla and touchwiz. Its super fast, and been amazingly stable. Those voices only happen once, like others said it let's you know you're not bricked, still working.

The whole point to flashing a custom rom...is to have a good working solid base to work with if you choose to leave it as it is... Since these are Android phones that can easily be modified to your liking (after all isn't that what you are trying to do ? )...and since you are loading a custom rom that has tons of people giving their input on how it looks and what features it has in it...it's really time for you take responsibility of what you are posting and to stop expecting a plain vanilla rom when you can easily see how far along it is in development that one is.
Learn to read and research better before you flash a full featured rom with tons of customization in it. They all have change logs on the OP for you to see what is in it...and if you don't understand what your flashing...then perhaps you should refrain from doing anything like that until you are familiar enough with it. You can post questions about all the roms if you don't understand it's features...you can also read the thread and what folks are saying about it...even if it is as long as it is...This way...you become familiar with it..and how it was developed over time.
Complaining about a very popular rom's features or it's designer because you didn't take the time to research what exactly it has in it or does is childish at best.
If you find my post offensive...or flaming you...I am sorry...but no one twisted your arm to modify your phone..just as no one can force you to read and research before you attempt to modify your phone...but you will be better off doing just that and to learn what it is your attempting...and wanting on your phone...before you flash anything. All of the roms have different features..modems..lag fixes..some are over clocked..some aren't...some have talking voices at boot up..some don't...all this information is available to you....BEFORE you do anything...
Mac
Protip: The majority of the custom rom's are not built for use, but for the dev themselves. If they like it that way, and you don't, too bad.
That being said, CyanogenMod is probably the only one that fully fits your requirements, as it's built from AOSP sources, rather than a modified samsung rom.

Hi guys. Hopefully this is the correct board to post in. I'm a former fan of CyanogenMod. I used the old CyanogenMod builds that ran Android 2.1, but when 2.2 came out, I jumped to a rooted stock 2.2 ROM.
After trying CyanogenMod 6, I'm pretty disappointed. It felt much slower than stock, and it no longer had the CyanogenMod feel.
Anyhow, are there any developers that actually make clean and stable ROMs? With every N1 ROM I've looked at, the developers seem obsessed with changing the Android GUI around, and not adding more important features.
There really seems to be no ROM that keeps the default Android GUI look and feel, but adds things like a percentage in the battery icon, a white-on-black Messaging app tweak, and some of the under-the-hood performance tweaks.
Maybe I'm just angry, and maybe no one shares the same sentiments as me, but I'm just curious to hear back from others. Am I going to have to bake my own ROM to get what I want?
Thanks in advance anyone who took the time to read my rant.
Edit: I wanted to note, after seeing a friend's Motorola Droid with the BuglessBeast 2.2 ROM on it, that looks like almost exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, that seems to be a Droid-specific ROM.
Push Mms.apk from latest CM6.0.0-RC1 to whatever ROM you wish, and you got the black background in MMS.
There are some close-to-stock ROMs, like Geo411m's.
Personally, I use LeoFroyo with black bar until CM supports SD-EXT in framework, that would be a good enough reason to switch. I'm already tempted to switch to have browser enhancements, but I don't feel it's a good enough reason by itself. For some reason, Browser.apk crashes when pushed, probably has some CM-only framework dependencies.
I'm a fan of Kang o Rama
I'm really liking Geo411m's ROM, aside from the trackball-unlock (no way to disable it as far as I can find?).
Maybe I should just learn to bake my own ROMs-- I don't really want much past the stock ROM, just a couple things, really.
There wouldn't happen to be any informative threads on how to do so? I looked around but couldn't find much.

There is no one ROM that is perfect for everyone. Maybe you guys are new to Android and this is your first device. Maybe you've just been spoiled with the variety of developer support... but most of us former G1 owners who rooted were very adept at picking bits from various ROMs and pushing those bits into a developed ROM that was already largely what we were looking for. I remember downloading and pulling out frameworks, changing icons, pulling/pushing apps, etc. That way, you end up with EXACTLY what you want. Perfect example... I was reading comments on Engadget to Cyanogen's latest Froyo build for the G1, and some ass complained about the "ugly" rounded notification bar. All he has to do is push over one or two files from any of a gazillion other ROMs and he'd have his original notification bar back.
Think of custom ROMs as a starting point... and then find and push the parts of other ROMs that you really like over a good custom ROM. You'll learn a lot and end up self-sufficient. You'll probably also feel very proud of doing some of the work personally.
ummm, what exactly is wrong with MoDaCo ROMs? modaco's philosophy is being as close as possible to a stock ROM, with just a few improved tweaks. modaco ROMs are like stock ROMs. you tried this?

Try Modaco's roms, their basically stock, just rooted. His was the first one I tried, but I switched to evil because I like black status bar and theme. Modaco's roms are not themed, and the same way stock is set up his is set up, nothing extra. If I did'nt like my roms themed, I would definitely rock one of his for sure.
Using geomod411's rom myself. Added a2ext support and it's all good. It's practically stock so I'll be looking to add things like black mms later.

I tried this but it didn't work. I had to push it from Recovery because when the phone was on I kept getting an error about it being read-only.
adb push Mms.apk /system/app/Mms.apk
Worked in recovery... but my text messaging interface has not changed. It's still the stock/white.
EDIT: Did it a ghetto way. Used Root Explorer, removed /system/app/Mms.apk -- then installed the Mms.apk that I pulled out of the CM6 zip. That worked.
Are you seriously complaining about Cyanogens CM6 RC1?... You do know what RC1 means right?
Anyway, CM6 is the best release of 2.2 for N1 out there.. it's just in a working stage now and there are allot of things to fix... that's why it is a Release Candidate... and it was in Alpha testing not long ago.
If you want a clean and simple go back to stock...

Not to get on a rant here guys, but I came from Win mo and those guys really work it over there......

No new looks , no new feel.

Also, I doubt much ROM development will happen (except for a few champions of the people, like DG) until the Samsung official Android 2.2 comes out, and more importantly, the source code for that 2.2 version is released.
But to be honest, with a piece of hardware this capable, even the 2.1 ROMs are pretty sweet. That and other projects are currently ongoing. Take for example the Vodoo project, which basically has entirely scrapped the default filesystem, and gone with EXT2. And will soon be coming with other tweaks and options for the awesome SAMOLED screen in our phones. Those aren't exactly simple bits of code being whipped up.
Yes, I come from the WinMo side of XDA as well, but around here, it's quality not quantity that counts.
Yikes.

Everyone is so mean to the OP. He cant help it he is sofa king we tar did.
It's actually understandable why the OP is asking. I too spent a lot of time with WinMo and was used to having 10+ ROMs available. But I quickly realized that WinMo NEEDed modified ROMs just to give it functionality and performance. When I got my HTC Touch HD I thought I had the pinnacle of mobile phone technology, but yet I was still always trying new ROMS because I wasn't satisfied with the performance and functionality.
This Captivate is my first Android phone and from what I can tell we don't actually NEED a ROM to make the phone awesome.
WinMo needed ROMs to be a good experience, hence there was a lot of people focused on that aspect of development.
Android, and especially our awesome phone, doesn't need a new ROM to be a good experience so most of the genius developers are able to focus on other projects like various applications rather than just simply trying to get our phones to function.
WinMo required lots of hacking and ROMs to get the same functionality that our phone has by simply installing a new widget or app.
So to the OP, if you ever check back, you don't see a ton of ROMs because frankly they're not required. Welcome to Android! It's a much smoother and satisfying experience than your previous WinMo experience. I can say that because I was just like you just a couple months ago.

Yeah, I don't doubt that there WILL be more ROMs. Especially with the scrabble to get Froyo before Samsung releases it. This is a new phone after all. I just know that with my old WinMo phones the first thing I would do with them is feel unsatisfied and attempt to install some hacked ROM to feel a little less satisfied.
With this phone I'm just happy right out of the box. Of course I don't use the GPS so maybe if I did I'd grumble a bit. But otherwise I think this phone is just incredible.
Specifically for the Samsung Captivate, why did you choose the ROM you have currently flashed on your phone and why? If you know about more than one ROM, would you mind telling me what you liked and disliked about each? It would be very helpful to me.
Please post this on the right section...we want to keep development for actual development...
I'm using Bacon and Axura with Red Soul theme. I love both rom because they are fast!

I do apologize. Didn't realize I posted here and meant to do so in the Q and A.
Could we get a mod to move it, please?
I asked the same thing...in development.....got a tongue lashing for being in the wrong thread and was directed here....wish you all would make up your mind!!!
I was a flashing fool. Did my fair share of trials and tests.
I ran through the Cognition roms. Loved each one as they got better and better. Vodoo lagfix is pretty easy if you understand how and when to disable. Pretty straight forward and noob friendly.
Perception is fast, shiny and new. Based on the I9000, the roms seem to need a bunch of tweaks and changes to get it to run decently. I was never happy with the performance I got from these and well I never really used it to it's full potential either.
So for now I'm back on JH7. I mostly use the phone just as that, a phone. No real advantage in using a custom rom for that.
It still depends on what you are looking for
Similar to earlier post I used the cog roms for a while. Easy to install and stable.
Currently on perception, much faster then stock our cognition. It has a ton of options for tweaks, but is a little more dangerous because it is less idiot proof. I am on the build 3 release and to be honest I will not be changing my rom for singer time.

Currently running auxura. It is a fantastic rom.... but you need to have a little knowledge on how to flash and use cement.
Its a very complete rom with an awesome theme and it is quick once you set it up correctly.
But. I do live Cognition .... just waiting for another release before. I flash back to it again lol.

I'm using and loving di11igaf's ROM. I used many variations of Cognition and I really appreciate it for bringing me into the world of custom ROMs, but the last version (2.3B6) seemed slow in comparison to AXURA and di11igaf's ROM. I really like the theme and speed of di11igaf's ROM.
Thanks for all the replies! I keep learning more and more every time I check this board out. I'm an ex iOS user and decided to move to Android and everything is tons different, very open, in fact. I think I'll continue to do more research on all the different ROMs and builds and make a little database for myself based on my research and decide from there. Then again, I'm sure the only way to know what I want is to flash each one.
I have yet to see any rom to match the speed of a i9000 based Rom. I have tried almost all of them and always come back to i9000 ROMs as they have the features I want and the best speed. Of course we all have different priorities.
I have a few more questions before I make the leap to buy my first ever Android based device.
The Questions:
Will Rooting make my phone more susceptible to being Hijacked/Hacked /Virus?..so on. I presume its no, but security is nothing to play with. Does McAfee have an App? (That was a joke)
Is there currently anything I should stay way from that doesn't currently work or isn't stable with 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich?
Will Adobes Apps (Photoshop Touch for example) work on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000? I ask this because said app is made for a tablet...but the GALAXY NOTE isn't your average tablet since it's a phone? It meets the resolution requirements... just not the size. Hence the confusion. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?Would Paranoid Android assist me in this concern? (I think it would based on what I have seen)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...
Flash the Rom with someone else's handy work?
Does anyone have a recommendations on where I should buy the Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000 Note? I just want to know the options I may have other than Amazon, Ebay, or Expansys.

Ok, if you can download it, Adobe it should work. You can try a custom rom which supports tablet mode should you not be able to download with normal dpi. That will enable tablet mode in market, after clearing market data and reboot it should become available for dl.
Currently there are a couple good stock ICS roms and a couple good custom roms. All (except cm9 xplodwild is safe, not other cm9) kernels are dangerous due to Brickrisk of known bug. However, all cm9 based suffer the bugs of cm9, speakerphone broken, high battery consumption, etc. Most have their own bugs on top.
Now ICS source is out wait a couple days as more custom roms and kernels will be build as well as bugfixes. And off course, support the devs with donations for coffee, so they stay awake and make no errors lmao .
I love this community, enjoy

1. No. Truth is, root or no root, you are equally vulnerable to malware. Just read the reviews and all before installing any, you know, 'unknown' app.
2. Wiping, factory resets and CWM. Although this is just for stock German ICS and older ICS ROMs like Stunner. New ROMs like Paranoid, CM9 are safe. Still in case you must search before you do anything with custom ROMs just to be on the safe side.
3. Can't find Photoshop Touch on the play store. But there must be a work around am sure. I am using Paranoid by the way.
4. You can pretty much flash a custom ROM and flash various themes and things. Don't know about RAM but you can over clock or under clock your processor. There are various tweaks scattered so just search for it and more often than not you will find it. Carbon tweaks are really good. Search them in themes and apps.

Ok, if you can download it, Adobe it should work. You can try a custom rom which supports tablet mode should you not be able to download with normal dpi. That will enable tablet mode in market, after clearing market data and reboot it should become available for dl.
Tablet Mode. Ill look out for that in the features.
Brick Risk Eh?...Well this is why I ask these things. Ill stay away from cm9/kernels. I know enough now that it looks like can look into some custom roms with a *little* more on the ball.

What happens if root malware tries to root me. Must go deeper /s
2. Wiping, factory resets and CWM. Although this is just for stock German ICS and older ICS ROMs like Stunner. New ROMs like Paranoid, CM9 are safe. Still in case you must search before you do anything with custom ROMs just to be on the safe side.
Wouldn't do it any other way. I've already learned alot just from searching (presuming I can figure out the right question to input in the query)

I have a question. Why cant we (flashaholics) settle down on one rom?. I my self am very content with my sonic rom, Nottach xposed, and other mods but am always looking for something bigger better newer. Why? Why I ask. Its a freakin phone. Make phone calls, text, surf the net and watch videos. Why do we constantly keep looking for other roms to flash even though the very rom we are on works perfectly and fills our needs. Im just wondering because I see the same people in various rom threads always flashing different roms. Two or 3 a week. Look. Im not saying its bad, I'm just trying to understand the need to look for the something better all the time. I my self am looking at other roms wondering how they are when I think the end result would be the same just minor differences. Just a thought.

I don't know if it's a need for something better at all - as most roms and etc are not so much better than one another and more so just different and bring a different experience.
I'd say it's just more of a hobby that people get in to because it's fun. Playing around with different themes, tweaking kernels for performance than battery life, switching from AOSP features to TW ones, playing with that roms unique feature than playing with another's, setting up a new home screen setup, etc etc.
Some people like collecting stamps, some people like tweaking and upgrading their car, and we just like pimping out our phone and trying new things!

Addiction for sure. Plus alot of people are trying to find their "ideal" android experience. As stock falls way short. I remember the samsung captivate I had, daily flashing!! For me now I just want a bug free setup so I dont flash like I used to. Usually only flash when I notice the phone is acting up or I mess something up ...

Not saying you're "wrong" because this is all opinion, but from my perspective, Jelly Bean hits the mark big time. In the nearly five years of Android, since rooting the G1, this is the first time I wasn't in a major hurry to get on a custom ROM. For me it's not the "Stock vs. Custom" aspect that drives me, but rather that stock unrooted keeps so many of the existing capabilities on lockdown. This phone and this OS kept me happy for a good minute.
That said, like others have mentioned, I love to tinker and there is no question that many custom ROMs improve on the Stock experience, even the JB stock experience.
But after the EVO, I kind of settled into comfortable favorites. Ran Calkulin's ROM for about 6 months and then MIUI (which is one ROM, but new every week) from when it first ported through the EVO3D and up until I got the SGSII. Flashed a few ROMs and then settled on the BluKuban and am now running that on my SGSIV.
I guess my flashing bug was pretty much tamed by 2010, but I definitely understand people who are flashoholics. I was one and it was like having a new phone every week. That was the appeal for me anyway.

Compared to the many here, I would say I'm definitely not a "flashaholic." I do, however, enjoy tinkering with my phone very much and "modding" my phone has now overtaken the modding needs I used to have for my car.
I like trying out new kernels, mods, and apps that enhance the useability, speed, reliability, performance, and battery longevity of my phone. I ask myself sometimes why I spend so much time doing this stuff and for me, it's for several reasons:
1. For me, smartphones are still relatively new (got my first smartphone last year in May, a S2) and therefore exciting. Like the media says, "A mini computer that fits inside your pocket." It's just so cool~!
2. Before I got into modding my car (and my wifey's and my mom's), I was really into the modifying and overclocking (watercooling) PC scene. Smartphones have rekindled my passion for technology and my nerdy side reemerged. When I was becoming bored and feeling kinda indifferent about the slowdown in the PC industry, the rise & dominance of smartphones have reignited my passion to learn something new and be excited again after each breakthrough in mobile technology.
3. I like to keep my phone up-to-date with the newest and greatest from Google and the many amazing developers.

Ah I feel you pain.. Seems to me you are like me and trying to chase that perfect rom. I had a galaxy Nexus for sprint and hated waiting for my roms to be ported. I would also check xda and when i see the thread title updated i got excited and downloaded immediately. I never backed up w/ apps like TB so always had to start fresh and honestly my gnex was never setup for easy access.(like when i need directions for maps it has ten pop ups slowing me down). Then i went on to mods kernels and others and was always wiping and flashing. I stuck to cm 10.1 because its self nightly updater. I was so excited with my S4 that i didn't think of rooting it till day 2. I wanted to root, run stock and install apps like cerebrus, af wall, and adaway but im coming on to day 20 and i haven't rooted it. I know if i root my phone will run slower and if it bugs, blame the root then i'll never feel happy and start flashing roms then get stuck in the loop again. NO! I almost considered getting an iphone 5 just so i can stop but didn't. Samsung is a big company and right now their rom is working for me. Im now hooked on cases. lol
Long story short,(incase you dont want to read ^)
You're not alone. Galaxy S4 is a damn good phone but like every other device, it has flaws. Try to get use to stock because even if "perfectRom" is released you'll find yourself going back buggy roms.
Or you can have someone password block xda and fight with the moderators and go cold turkey for 60 days. I know they say 30 but lets be safe.
all of the above is correct, if you just want a phone, get a iphone, if you want to play with things, roms/themes etc, then this is the phone, I personally did not buy a $500 phone to make a call with.
BECAUSE IT'S LIKE TECHY CRACK!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!! *starts twitching in the kernel & mod forums*
