It's been over 2,5 years now since I bought my TyTN II and been using it all this time without problems. But few days ago, my messaging app - tmail.exe - suddenly started to drastically slow down (for example: showing or deleting a message takes ~30 seconds, sending takes even more time).
Interesting thing is, that after deleting a few messages it started working normally. Received another messages, and slowing down returned. Also deleting e-mail accounts I've had configured helped for a while.
tmail.exe seems to be using 90+% of CPU during any task. There's lots of free memory, since no other app is open.
I did not install any new software for months now. Messaging app database is in the phone memory, not storage card.
Been googling and reading posts for hours now, but couldn't find any solid answer. Any suggestions (preferably other than doing a hard reset)?
Thanks in advance.

Well, tmail.exe is native to WM, so should work properly with preinstalled NET CF. Either way - according to cgacutil I've had installed version 2.0.7045.0 before, now i have both it and 3.5.7283.0.
All in all, I didn't notice any change, but thanks anyway. Any other ideas?

alright ...!!! try to reduce the cache on the display screen, If you delete the cache, it will alleviate the working memory system. Well .. to clear the cache when the internet, you can go to internet option and clear the cache. Meanwhile, when the cache is related to the screen, then you can delete it through the registry editor. How, entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ GDI \ GLYPHCACHE .-> Change the value limit of 8192 (default) to 16384 or 32768.8. you can use a registry cleaner and SpeedBooster maybe this can help

Changed to 32768 and restarted the device. Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.
I think its more of an issue of tmail itself. I've kept googling on that and found a post stating, that when number of stored messages hits some threshold - it starts to slow down. Still, even if it is true (is it?), then I wonder why it does slow down so rapidly - from normal work to extreme slowness. For example yesterday deleting ~15 SMS took my phone approx. 2 hours (doh!).
Perhaps there is some kind of indexing service on all messages that is the reason behind this?

My storage memory seems to steadily but significantly grow and grow. It is now at 98% full and I can't find any space. Normally after a hard reset and installing all of my data and apps this figure is in the 80% range. I do keep my temporary internet files cleaned out by removing everything from Windows\Profiles\guest\Temporary Internet Files which can generally free up a very large amount of space, say 10+ MB or so. The obvious additional pieces of information are:
-no new large files added
-quite a few SMSs - but not a thousand, maybe 50-200 total
-no new programs installed
-the mystery bloat seems to be in the Windows directory which is now 138MB (seems odd) as reported by Resco Explorer
I have used find large files feature and have thoroughly browsed my Windows directory and just can not find the large file(s) causing this. Could this be some kind of memory leak? This is the second time this has happened and the last time I resorted to a hard reset which drastically improved the problem (got rid of it and got me back down to the 80% level again which it seemed to stay at for quite some time). I really do not want to get in this mandatory endless hard reseting loop.
BTW: AT&T device and ROM, bloatware removed by reset during bloatware installation at start up. Any advice greatly appreciated.
you sure your removing the PIE cache by opening PIE and selecting to clear history and delete files by going to tools/options in PIE? thats the most common place you get internal memory getting eaten up. ive had 40mb go through PIe because i forgot to delete the files through the PIE settings
Thanks. Emptying that directory does the same thing. Just to be sure I did that anyway. No change. At 96% now. Ugh.
Give us a list of...
Device, is it a stock AT&T Tilt or one of the beta's we are hearing about?
Firmware, items shown on startup from soft reset!
Installed Apps/Cabs,
cause you could have something storing log files that you don't know about!
then we can have a reference of where to go!
OK here goes...
R 1.27.12.11 (std AT&T)
G 22.45.88.07H
D 1.57.00.00
Aps (in addition to std. ROM):
Opera

Thanks again!
Look for a file named Today in the Windows directory. I noticed this on my Tilt ROM and it was steadily growing. It's safe to delete.
Also check your email, this can grow rapidly if you get attachments.
?Glitch
Does google maps save it's map cache to the storage card? I thought it didn't. If not, that would likely cause your memory to drop if you use google maps a lot.
Thanks so much guys.
@URPREY: The only file like that is Today_Order_23Jul07.cab and it is a whopping 3kB
@?Glitch: I only use SMS not MMS not e-mail, I think these guys are pretty darn small.
@snoogisnguy: I thought google maps downloaded everything it needed sort of in real time and cleaned stuff up in real time as well. Can you point me to a directory to examine for large files?
Bribe
OK hate to resort to a "bribe", but this problem is killing me. $25 to the person who can solve it. I'd be happy to simply make another donation to the forum as well.
Google maps keeps almost everything it downloads, if you use that a lot that would be my first guess.
check My device/application data/GoogleMaps and the file cashe-GLM.
Mine's about 2M and i rarely use it.
Try memmaid from Dinarsoft. It can evaluate your storage usage, including the google cache and tell you what is taking up the space. It's got a free 15 day trial.

hard reset and start again... might be an issue that you may never find
on another note, why dont you sync up to windows and check the file/folder size of each one you have... theres not that many and so it should only take a few minutes
atleast that way you can narrow it down to what area of your phone is taking up so much memory... and then narrow it down to a file hopefully
just an idea

Which file explorer did you use to check? The file that was on mine was a hidden file and had no extension so I only saw it with Total Commander. It grew very quickly and I had to delete it several time. I believe it was a cache file for the today screen. I use an RSS today plugin and I think that's what caused it. I have no issues after changing to a cooked ROM.

Thanks guys! All of the other suggestions, although great ideas, turned out to not be the culprit. The one above, with some more detective work was the winner. Memmaid located a folder called ~Recycled that was 15+ MB. It is a bug (or maybe even a "feature") in Resco Explorer that it does not show this directory ewven when you check show everything such as hidden, system, in ROM, etc. This directory held some files that were cached images from web browsing as well as other unidentifiable files. Memmaid also nicely deleted the entire directory. All was well until I got a bit too aggressive and used Memmaid to move all of the application caches to the memory card. This made my system very unstable, slow and almost unuseable. Luckily I could get back in Memmaid and undo those changes. Anyway a bit of a long struggle but finally this very annoying and crippling problem is solved. I really hope this thread helps out others with a similar problem.
As a follow up question does anyone know how to prevent such bloat in this directory in the first place? Seems like a very crippling feature of WM wihtout access to this directory.
dunneldeen: Was your suggestion enough of a solution that you want the "bribe" money? Thanks again either way!
You simply have to remove "recycle bin" feature from Resco Explorer settings, so your files will be deleted as soon as you do it and they will doesn't go to the recycle bin that in theory you have to empty manually, like your do with the one on your PC.
The most important thing. Back up your user data!! You cant harm your device since you can almost in any case master reset but when performing master reset the internal storage will be erased. Back up your registry as well. Some services, networks and relateed stuff may stop working.
Every time WM boots, system writes amount of free memory. Check it and compare free memory spare after performing selected tweaks.
HKCU\Performance\Available RAM on boot
I have performed master reset, set Default homescreen (WeatherUpdateService take too much ram space), installed Resco Explorer, Registry Editor, Celetask, and Oxios Memory. Micro SD is inserted but all programs are stored in internal memory.
Do not continue without registry backup (PHM Registry Editor works fine) and back up of user data from internal memory (Sprite Backup)!

Wings defaults:
- Available RAM on boot: 19 701 640 B
- Task Manager shows: 19,252 KB
- Freeing memory using Oxios Hibernate: 20 260 KB
- Task Manager shows then: 19,720 KB
After the tweaks:
- Available RAM on boot: 21 381 120 B
- Task Manager shows: 20,736 KB
- Freeing memory using Oxios Hibernate: 21696 KB
- Task Manager shows then: 21,356 KB
Well, cca 1.5 MB isnt too much but since there is so little RAM, every single MB counts.
Now I have to put all the programs back on Wings and see if there will be any change.
Notes:
- "Flag = 4" means service wont be loaded
- I tried to set "Keep = 0" for services in "HKLM\Services" but it just did not work so smooth as deleting. ("Keep = 0" should unload the service after initialization)
- Its mostly BlueTooth/OBEX/A2DP, SIM/SIM Toolkit, network services... which i dont use so much.
Do you know any other RAM saving tweak (only memory related)?
Has anyone tried to change IE cache limit? It returns back to 5120 after reset...
Weather Program
This does sound awesome! But I do not want to change my home screen. From what your saying also, it seems that the weather program (2nd icon) is constantly on (auto update and display), which in turn, is using up RAM. Is it possible to just close/delete it from windows itself or the registry? I think this will give us at least another 5-6k in ram which will put us at around 18 or so from start. I am fine with 18, but not 12 from start.
If you dont use the HTC homescreen the Weather Update wont be loaded. Otherwise you just have to live with that.
This is pretty crazy. You advice do delete services without explaining what each do..
For example:
Stk_service - what if user wants to use SIM Toolkit?
OBEX- sending files, contacts over bluetooth?
If users want to use BT (OBEX, A2DP, HID, GPS), SIM Toolkit, USSD messages, Windows Live... then they just have to not delete these services or restore them from backup (just import missing registry).
I thing the memory size is much more crazy than this.
Thanks a lot! I will try it soon.
Hi! Thanks for the great tips!

(I know i totally screwed up when there was BIG RED LETTERS SAYING "Do not continue without registry backup (PHM Registry Editor works fine) and back up of user data from internal memory (Sprite Backup)!" but i did. Kick me)
one (or more) of these tweaks makes my SMS service stop working (no matter if I choose to recieve/send SMS over gprs or gsm)
any which one that would be? (I know I could just try them all )
Hi!
Someone has tryed to install fring on this device?
I did it yesterday and i disable autostart immediately, but i have seen that before installing it i had 4-6 mb free cleaning the ram with terminate all and now about 9 not cleaning and 10-11 closing all apps.
I have no time for a complete test at the moment but if someone can try to install fring and test the phone it will be great.
Bye
When I disable this service, I can't send any SMS !

I have searched for this extensively, but i can' seem to find anything about this subject. It could be my searching skills, or I might not know what I'm looking for, but sorry if this has been answered!
I have installed touchflo 2d, a few free programs, and i dont do much messaging, about 500-1000 a month range. But every once in a while i experience a message saying "you're device is running critically low on memory" so i deleted a few programs i dont use anymore, and everything was fine.
I have been keeping my eye on it, and it seems my storage space is decreasing slowly by the hour. It decreases by about 1 mb every 2 days. i have searched through the file explorer, and i have NO idea where my storage is going.
Thank you in advance
O and ive had my kaiser for about a year, and before the touchflo 2d i never had any problem such as this.

What ROm are you using and what other third party apps have you installed...try temp clear to clean everything up also...
i honestly don't know what ROM I'm using, how do i find out?
third part apps are:
Amaze - never used
g-alarm
opera 9.5
palringo
skyfire
s2u
pocket CM contacts
and google maps, but that came with touchflo
what type of messaging do you do?
Are you sending and receiving 500-1000 text messages a month or are you sending and receiving more like 5000 text messages a month? What kind of messages are you receiving? Pictures? How about email? Are you saving every email you receive to your Tilt? Attachments too? If you have multiple email accounts with a lot of attachments and multimedia text message often, these can eat up memory space faster than you would think.
I don't know what's your problem but using dirmap, you should easily be able to fix it.
Dirmap scans your memory and gives you for every directory the amout of memory used.
You can do a search on google or find it here : http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/fr/index.php?soft=1414
Good luck.
Thomas
I was having a similar problem and finally realized that i hadent been clearing my opera cache. After doing this I freed up almost half of my phones memory.
hope that helps
Clear all your temp files and browser history. That's the hidden storage space that a lot of people forget to clean up. Also try and move any number of files, videos, photos from your phone onto your storage card. This should free up some valuable space. Check to see how much of your phone memory is free right now.

You know, It would probably make sense to ask you how much space you have on your phone right now. Check both storage space on the phone and free program memory. Also the SD card.

LOL, and that's supposed to be "not much". I send/receive like 5-10 a month, and never exceed 100-200 in the inbox without deleting on hard resets every ~6 months
ClearTemp app is the way to go
I have to agree with the Coleslaw Copper, the simple app cleartemp is the way to go. it will automatically identify and (upon your acceptance) will clear out all the little things that can bog down your phone's system, including your temp file, cache, and i believe your deleted mail. A very sensible way to address your memory problem. Also, redirecting your everyday items to your storage card will help.
Does anyone have / know of a way to restore the program memory back to it's original state without having to soft-reset? I've tried Memaid, Oxios Hibernate, SKTools, etc, etc...
Anyone who has used a Diamond for more than a day will know that program memory just disappears, even after killing all applications and running one of the apps mentioned, it just won't come back! I've discovered some ROM's are better than others, but none of them are what I'd call 'reasonable' at memory managing.
Where does it go to, and why is a soft-reset needed to get all available program memory back? Any development wizzes got an idea on this?
I'm using ipaq 6818 with nhocbanme cooked rom. he was added a software called FREE MEM to OEM but it's only able to recover some of missing memory. Normal memory after soft reset 28 - 30mb. after several times use for activities it'll drop to 17 - 23mb which all app has been killed via task manager. after do free mem it's only recover about 1.5mb and couldn't totally recover like first time after soft reset. but it's Ok for me since this nhocbanme cooked rom is very fast and very very stable for my ipaq 6818. the minus is this rom looks very dark. if u are not change the folders icon
It seems that WM is bad at managing memory and lets a number of bad programs take up space after closing. Opera seems to be one of the worst culprits; I wish we had a better browser for the Diamond.
NoTSR helps sometimes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446928
I rarely use it, prefering to soft reset often.

... yes, you're right. Opera seems very 'memory hungry' - can't understand why memory management apps can't release the memory afterwards though. Probably something to do with Microsoft - as usual!!

Most chefs have optimized their custom ROMS with a large "file system cache" to, in theory, increase performance. After much experimentation, I have found so far that this seems to directly correlate with some of the memory leaking we see in these ROMS! (perhaps the WM6.5 file caching algorithm is faulty?)
Anyway, you have nothing to loose but time, so please consider this simple tweak...
If your ROM has a HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize of a large value (4096, or 0x1000 in hex, seems to be common) change this instead to 0x100 (256) and soft-reset.
Now, use the phone a bit, and notice how much free RAM you get back after closing everything down. Even if the free RAM doesn't initially jump right back up to almost where it was at boot, you'll notice that CleanRAM does a *much* better job of getting it right back there.
To me, the phone doesn't feel slower in any way with this small of a file system cache. Turning it off completely did feel a bit slower, but I could have just been imaging things.
Either way, I've had a cache value of 0x100 since my last reset several hours ago, and have had Opera, CorePlayer, IE, YouTube, Adobe Reader, and several other things opening and closing and running concurrently, and once I shut them all down, I am right back to about where I was at boot. The one time it didn't get there, cleanRAM gave me back 18MB and there I was!
Try it !
* UPDATE: I don't claim this will completely fix memory leaks -- I'm sure there's many factors at play here -- but it does seem to really help!
i just tried it and it dropped down to 52% after i was at 70%. it feels a bit slower for me but nothing to major.
thanks for sharing
Tried it on NRG's Latest, changed from Auto to 256k (using Schaps advanced config).
Mem Usage seems to stay a little lower, and the performance seems similar.
Just my experience.
Dave
will try it and report back
attached a cab
This really does work... I even noticed sometimes if I leave my phone alone the memory usage will go down a little bit now instead of leak. No performance issues. Using dotcompt's latest ROM. Works great, hangs around 65% memory in use now even with heavy use. I changed my cache setting to 128kb.
I tried this tweak with the 6.5 stock ROM from HTC on a unbranded model. De default value was 0, i changed it to 128 and now i'm hoping for some action
I will report back tomorrow if i notice any change.
Thx for the tip ^.^
Hi all, well i tried this tweak. It does seem to slow things down a bit. I saw there was an option to disable the cache, i'm going to test this now.
For me 128 was the best value.
Grtz,
FeareX
I'll give it a try at 128kb .... let's see
edit: After first reset upcoming appointments and weather forecast in home tab were missing ( -> changed mem size to 256kb ... let's see
when i went to try this out, my cache was set to 0, so i changed it to 256 and didn't notice any change and the same thing occurred when changing to 128
does this work?

zero means that windows mobile takes what ever it wants/needs. If you want zero you should disable the cache.
also watch out for this: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Windows_Mobile_6_Standard
I also played around with the maximum buffer size for HTC Sense. Found somewhere in HKLM\Software\HTC\ResProxy
Some Custom ROMs already have a lower value. In Advanced Config you also find a setting for the glyph cache.
And I kicked out many tabs. For example the music tab is locking memory once it is used.
But keep in mind that caching is done for speed. And the best tweak is not to even use HTC Sense! ;-) But a blank today screen is not very useful, so I am still looking for a good solution and testing alternatives.
At least Windows Mobile devices should have much more RAM
I changed mine to 256, rebooted and 2 things i notice. SMS that comes in does not display the caller name. It only displays the number. I can view the SMS from the tab but when i tap on the sms and goes into the sms compose window, no sms is displayed at all
Changed back to 0. It's probably just me but FYI

If the transmission is good in the 95. I would use it and swap ecus. Have to make sure the motor mounts are in the same location. I would also use the CV shafts from your 95. I have thought about that when we still had our 2001 93. Going with a newer motor to get out of the sludge year Ect. 93 would be a sleeper though. Vroom vroom!!!
