I have a 8gig microsd card. I know that the nook requires fat or fat32 which limits me to a 4 gig partition. hOw can i use the entire 8 gigs? ? Should i ( or can i ) make 2, 4 gig partitions? Both fat32 with one being primary and the second one being logical?
Can someone please tell me how i should do this so i can use all 8 gig's.
Thank you
I think if you put the card in the NC and have it format it you will have all your space. I have a 8 GB card I use in another device and have had no issue using the full space.
Mine is a 16gb card-
14.82gb free of 14.83gb as reported by the NC itself.
Formatted by the NC.
You won't have any problems.
Thanks guys !

FAT/FAT32 doesn't limit the size of the partition to 4gb, single file in these filesystems cannot be bigger than 4gb.

I have a 1 gig card to use in my rooted NC. Do I need to format it some special way ? I have it formated as NTFS but I can not read it with ASTRO. It should be listed under sdcard right ? but I dont see it.
Help!
From what I've read on the Nook Color spec, it supports the FAT32 filesystem.
Try formatting your microSD card to that (or use the Nook to format the sd card directly)

Yup, FAT32 will work if what you have is a PC. There may be some UNIX filesystem format that's supported too, but for a 1 GB card, FAT32 is enough with its 4 GB file size limitation.
So I got myself a class 10 MicroSD from newegg from the company called Patriot (reviews for all their products say its a good company)
NewEgg page with item
In any case I figured 99$ isnt too bad. So I got the memory card today and sure enough computer has no issues reading it.Speeds are great and no bad reads or writes
So Im trying to set it up with ext3 etc and nothing seems to be working. So in any case I reformatted everything to fat32 on my PC and the phone isn't even detecting the memory card.
I was under the impression 32GB microsd should be ok. I hope this isnt a compatibility issue. Anyone else have thoughts in this?
Tried partition magic, default disk management application on xp also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and no luck. At this point I just want the phone to detect the memory card to I can format it from the phone and then do the ext3 either from CW or Amon
Anyone? Is changing the drive letter on a computer going to change anything?
I heard that FAT32 does not support 32GB partition very well.. also some card readers have problem with reading a 32GB shdc card.
Try to make a 10GB Fat32 partition on your SD card and leave remaining space free, see if your phone can use it.

Thanks ill give it a try but no point in a 32gig card if cant use most of it on the phone. Dont need most of the card as ext3 lol
Working fine here. I used Acronis True Image to clone the card the first go around, but didn't like how it setup the card. Then used Acronis Disk Director to reconfigure a 31gb FAT & 1gb ext3. You can use Amon_RA Recovery to setup the card too. I did do that too, but I already have Disk Director to give me the gui view of what's going on.
Cannot get EXT3 partition to work on Desire
I'm also having issues getting the ext3 partition of the Kingston 32GB micro sdhc card to work with my desire.
I used GParted to create a large fat32 partition and also created a 1GB ext3 partition, but when i reboot the handset i get an error meesage on the desire telling me that the sd card is damaged and that i need to format. When i go back into GParted the FAT32 partition looks healthy but ext3 partition comes up as unallocated.
This method has worked fine with an 2 and 8GB micro sd but it seems to have issues when using the 32GB.
I've also tried using rom manager to create a 512MB ext3 partition but that just causes the phone to sit on on the boot up screen.
If anyone is experiencing the same/similar problem, please let me know how you tackled it.
Try to use Amon_RA's recovery and reformat your SD card with it.
Gparted seems to be the best tool to use.
Hi,
Same problem with a Patriot MicroSD 32GB Class10.
Attempt to partition MicroSD with :
-Gparted
-Minitool Partition Wizard Home
-CWM (HD2)
Partitions are always destroyed or strange modified so Android can't read FAT32 partition.
No problems with a Sandisk 32GB Class 2.
Ok i worked out what this issue was.
Unfortunantly i've purchased a counterfeit Kingston MicroSD.
Kingston confirmed that it was a fake after i send them pics so that explains everything.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
The reviews seem mixed on the Patriot

Hi, i used win32diskimager to burn my 16 gig microsd card. Now it reads 300 mb and even when i reformat it, it won't go back to the 16gb. I was wondering how i can fix this and get my sd card back to it's real size

Well, yes. Specifically, use EASEUS to delete all partitions except the storage partition (the largest) then drag that partition to fill all the unallocated space. Windows only recognizes the first partition on any flash storage.
If you are running off SD card - and left the stock NC in tact on the EMMC - you can use settings to reformat your card. It'll have a couple folders you will have to delete afterwards - but it should free up the memory to original state.

If you are doing this in Windows you probably will have to go to Disk Management and delete the first partition and then format.
Right click "My Computer"
Select "Manage"
Select "Disk Management" (you need Administrative privileges)
Be very careful to pick the correct drive letter!
Right click the area where the drive letter appears and select "Delete partition"
Create a new primary partition and format
What I did to restore my micro SD card completely to a formatted state was put it in a SD adapter and put it in my digital camera and formatted the card. It removed all partitions and files. Works everytime.

You made my day ! Thanks for this information! After set up debian for arm on my 16 go sd card I just had a 74mo partition I got my full space back with your advice thanks
I am using this card for Raspberry Pi and I set up debian for arm with Win32DiskImager. It is at this moment the problem happened
The simpler solution now is probably to use SD Formatter for Windows. It should wipe all partitions and get you back to a 'default' state.
Use SD Formatter
Another simple way is to look for a program called SD Formatter (free) on the internet.
and format the SD card (make sure it is correct drive letter) using NOT the default setting but i believe it is a pulldown call (erase all zeros)
Great program, if you play with SD cards you should get it.

Just find and write a smaller image file to the card. Then use a partition manager program like Mini-Tool Partition Wizard (free) to expand the partition to fill the card. I have 200MB version in my tips thread linked in my signature. It has CWM 5.5.0.4 on it.
Use the 4 GB CWM image... then use minitools partition manager or eausus to resize to full capacity.

First time to post. Hope I'm in the right thread. Have read many of the threads here regarding Nook Color, CM7, CM9 et al. I really enjoy learning from all the information posted. I currently have an unrooted NC running CM9 on a micro SD and love it.
My problem: like djfury, I have tried to write an image file of a given size - in my case 16GB - to a new 16GB microSD card and always get a message that the file is too large for the card. What I have done is to make an image of my current CM9 installation on the microSD card using win32diskimager. Then I try to write that image to a new 16GB microSD card. But, alas, the image is suddenly to large for the card.
I want to keep this exact same image as it contains various apps and data that I have installed to my CM9 card.
Is there any way to "resize" the created image to make it about 2MB smaller so it will fit on the card?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, use a partition software program like Mini-Tool Partition Wizard to make your partition 4 a little smaller (take it off the end). Then use win32diskimager to make an image of the card. Then burn that to your new card.

I'm a little concerned about what version number of CWM people are getting in these size-specific images. Anything earlier than 3.2.0.1 (the last stable release) has a good chance of causing you problems down the road, depending on what you try to do with it, and I'm not aware of any 3.2.0.1 images bouncing around except for eyeballer's 1GB image over here (quoted text near the top).
Leapinlar's 5.5.x.x image should be fine, too, but if you have 3.0.2.8 or earlier it can be finicky about dealing with the partition tables on NCs released after July 2011 or NCs with modified partitions, which can result in boot loops and other shenanigans.
As detailed earlier in the thread, you can expand the partitions from the smaller images later if you want to continue using the card for backups, or if you're just using it one time to root or flash something, you don't need the space anyway.
Another thing that causes confusion and issues is manufacturer's selection of how to report size... some use the 1024 standard... some use the 1000 standard... If you read from a 16 GB card using the 1024 standard and try to write it to a 16 GB card using the 1000 standard... it will be approx 16 MB too large...
That being said... you are best if you can resize the last partition on a card approx 20 MB (to be safe) make the image... then write image to a new card and resize the last partition to consume the remainder of the card.

Sorry about the delay in offering thanks to those who replied. THANKS.
I also found the best solution for me was to use Mini Tool Partition Wizard and the Copy Disk Wizard. This process took a mirror image of my micro SD card then allowed me to write it ot a larger or smaller card. In my case from a 16GB to another 16GB, then from the 16GB to a 32GB. The last partition was automatically resized to fit the selected card size.
I'm happy now and can use one card for experimentation and still have a backup for restore purposes.
Thanks again for the advice offered.

Hi guys
I'm looking forward to use Link2sd so I installed minitoll partition wizard and tried to create 2 partitions:
1 Primary 7 Gb FAT32
1 Primary 0.6 Gb Ext2
i could never complete the task and partition wizard kept saying the sd card was unformatted. I found on anther thread that for some phones Ext2 partition did not work and that a second Fat32 could solve the issue.
I went down that road and the sd formatting went fine creating 2 Fat32 partition.
The BIG problem is that the sd card (Kingston 8 Gb class4) is extremely slow, getting all my backuo data back into it took like 30 hours.
Is this normal ?
What is the proper partition combination for the X8 on order to use Link2sd ??
Such slow writing speed to the sdcard seems a pretty high price to pay...is it worth ???

I used the same software to create partition in my Sandisc 8GB class2 SD card. It took around 10 mins to create and format the card with 7.5GB FAT32 and 0.5GB Ext2. Both are primary.
I suggest you to check the Card and software by interchanging them. That is try with same software on a new computer with this card and again on your machine try a new or another card.
Another way that you can make the partition in CWM recovery.
Positively there is something wrong, the time you mentioned is too unusual.
Hi
Thanks a lot, when you are so close to the trees you can't see the forest.jaja

Droid bionic has a max 32 gb external sdcard limitation. is this a hardware or software limitation?
thinking if it was software, could I create 2 partitions on 64gb card and mount extra partition in vold.fstab as usb1 or sdcard-ext2 or something?
thanks.

I do not know if this helps or not but my Samsung Precedent is supposed to have a 16gb SDcard limitation but I have a 32gb card in it and it reads it as such. AlI I can say is stick the card in and see what happens. Once I get my Bionic up and running I plan on moving the card to from phone to phone. Good Luck and hope it works.

Is the OS JellyBean?
is the card formatted exfat or fat32?
Is it class 6 or class 10?
thanks.
Note: reason I'm asking is I have been reading problems with class 10 micros SD drawing too much power and exfat not being recognized with usb thumb drives and I wasn't sure if that carried over to the Micro sd card(for those with a y cable, an OTG cable, and powered hub)
Software problem only, reformat the card as fat32, your phone will ask to do this, and it will work fine.

I broke down and bought a sandisk 64gb micro sdxc
picked up a sandisk 64gb sdxc class 10 from best buy for $35 yesterday.\
It would not read in my bionic because it is formatted exfat file system. Android no like. ext2 or fat32 is preferred if your a windows user def fat32.. problem with formatting anything that large using windows is you need utils found here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735
that diddn't work for me so I used easeus partition manager to delete partition on card and create a primary (not extended) partition that was unformatted. I then used the fat32format.exe from the link above to format the card all of which was done in windows xp
working now.
I'm sure there are some things here that are not neccessary but this is what worked for me after a few failed attempts.
do not copy files form your old card until you put a couple files on the new card and test it. you will just end up wasting your time when it doesn't work and you have to reformat it again or repartition it again and copy..... again. I copied 29g to the card like 3 times. lol.
my entire music collection will be with me at all times now!
64gb MicroSDXC is 30$ on Amazon (US).
I got one and it is working flawlessly in my bionic. I was running CM11 at the time, but have jumped a couple of ROMs since then.
I copied all files off of my old card to PC (using the card slot), formatted the new card IN MY PHONE, then copied the files on to the new cardPure success. No errors or anything.
Just my experience though! Bionic isn't supposed to handle 64gb cards, but mine did just fine.
64 megabyte SD card
I also purchased a 64 megabyte SD for my bionic and it works great.
