[Q] Sprint Htc Hero rooting issues - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
There might be a thread out there but I can't seem to find the answer to my issue.
I'm looking for a way to downgrade my Sprint HTC Hero, I'm currently running version 2.31.651.7 and every time I run the RUU for version .5 I get either error 132 for the signature or wrong RUU.
I'm running out of ideas. Will gladly appreciate it if anyone can help.

Not sure about the downgrading issue but if you're trying to root with the .7 firmware you can use the Superoneclick method found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682.
It worked great for me with the .7 firmware but just make sure you have the HTC Sync software installed on your computer or it won't read your phone.

Also works on .2 update. It's how I do mine so I don't have to flash the new radio when I'm lazy. Every now and then the phone gets a good internal flush...lol

i was looking for a way without having to resort to the one click root

The CDMA Hero Wiki page has links to all RUUs and rooting methods. If you can't find it there, a simple search will almost always yield you results.

Maybe you have a bad RUU file? Have you tried to download the RUU from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
I recommend that thread for rooting as well.
Side note, every time I run the RUU for .5 I get a usb error. I don't even touch the phone. I close the program on the pc, reopen and rerun and it works everytime. I have rooted several people's phones like that.

HTC Dream Help, please.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum. So...Hi
Anyways, I've got a problem with my Rogers Htc Dream. I was trying to root it and was following a guide on youtube. Then i realized rooting for T-Mobile G1s and Rogers HTC Dreams were different. Now i notice when i turn on my phone it shows a T-Mobile screen instead of the regular Rogers loading screen. I guess i installed the T-Mobile firmware on my phone. I checked in settings the current firmware im running is now 1.0. So, i'm wondering if anyone can help me put back on rogers firmware on my phone and also link me to a Rogers HTC dream rooting guide. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I have that too.
Not really an issue. I just too happy to care when I finally rooted my Dream.

Okay so, the root worked for you? Everythings alright its just the start up screen that changed?
To get back to stock rogers firmware apply the update from rogers found here:
http://rogers.com/techsupport/
Then follow this guide to get your phone rooted and install cyanogenmod:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod

I'm abit scared to follow that guide because there seems to be some ifs about it, like it says avoid anything that writes to the kernel, otherwise you're dead. And it says you require a EBI1, how do I check if I have EBI1
"The Recovery Flasher utility will only work if you're on a version of Android that Rogers/HTC hasn't yet fixed.
If you are at the recovery screen, move on to the next step."
Well how do I know if they haven't fixed it? And if we can't use fastboot to flash images, as Rogers prevents it, then if this procedure goes south we're stuck? I can verify the MD5 of the SPL update ZIP 20 times, but that's not going to guarantee that when I flash it it's not going to brick my phone
edit: I booted with camera and power and it says hboot is 1.33.0009, does this mean I don't have to risk bricking when I root? The tutorial is for 1.33.0010.
I think that it makes it sound a bit worse than it is. I have never tried it but from what I have read if you boot a EBI0 kernel with a EBI1 radio it will just freeze. You will just have to pull out the battery, boot into recovery and then flash a EBI1 kernel on top.
Rogers is bad for releasing updates for their devices. All their Android devices still run cupcake, even the new LG Eve. This is to our advantage because none of the rogers firmwares are fixed. You can give the Recovery Flasher a try because the worst that will happen if you have a fixed rom is nothing.
If you have a 0009 spl you can follow the guide here to update your spl and recovery then start following the guide at Installing HTC System Image. You could also just use the method on the wiki for 0010, I cant see any reason that wouldn't work.
My phone is perfectly fine after the gaining root. So far not much of a difference, except for the virtual keyboard and two more screens and a few more apps and options.

I really want to root so I can install applications to the memory card, and to get 1.6, but I'm really really really scared that it's going to break. I got the phone from ebay, so I'm pretty sure if it breaks I'm out $300 bucks. I'm really at a cross road here!
Ya i was kinda scared the first time too. Then I just bit the bullet and did it. Try to read through the forums as much as you can to learn as much as you can about how your phone works. Also make sure that you understand each step completely and what it is doing to your phone. This is what I did and it made me feel a lot better about the process.
The main risk is flashing the radio and spl once you are done that the chance of bricking is almost none of not none. If you have any questions that you can't find answers to by yourself just ask and me or someone else on the forum will answer them for you.
Yeah, if you're on the Rogers HTC dream, just follow the Rogers heres your real root thread, and all the guides he post. And follow it while filling in the rest with logic.
You'll probably get lost like I did, don't be afraid to ask around.
does anyone know the warranty if it bricks?
Hey everyone, thanks for the help. I went through with the root and everything seems to be working fine. I can make phone calls and everything. I'm running a hero rom. The only thing thats different is it shows a T-Mobile screen instead of Rogers. I don't think thats a big deal, is it?

You can't downgrade the bootloader (hboot) version, period. End of story. This is NOT the end of the world though! The 2.1 leaked RUU that you used should have been a rooted developers ROM so you can use that to restore your phone, install the custom recovery, then use whatever ROM you want.

does the bootloader stopper you from using a 1.5 ROM? does it stop you from completely unrooting? i guess what im asking is, can you still flash a stock nandroid and stock recovery, would sprint notice?

If they need/want to reflash, then they will notice. You can just wait 1-? weeks for the official 2.1 Ruu, which likely will use the new bootloader.
Look, the just posted a release signed with Release keys instead of test keys. Once this is put into a proper RUU with Root it MAY fix your issue, give it 24 hours.

They leaked.
@ jlem26
I read this from the sprint community forum:
From Android Central When it rains, it pours. Just got word of a new leak for the HTC Sprint Hero. No way of knowing if this is the final 2.1 version, but this one is signed with release keys so you will lose your root for sure if you're into that sort of thing. Anyone who feels brave and wants to try for themselves you can find it here. Remember, this is not official software from any carrier. Using this is at your own risk, and nobody here at Android Central is suggesting you try it, though we're more than happy to show you where it is. Thanks Beezy420! http://www.4shared.com/file/gfPzbRcS/RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2276515_R_si.html Haven't tried it myself...But I figured I'd post it..
I downloaded it, but I'm scared to try it.......
The new 2.1 leak is almost certainly the final, so the official Sprint update will prob. be out next week.
WARNING: the new leak is NOT ROOTED, and the old rooting methods will NOT work. (Someone took one for the team and already RUU'ed the new leak, and confirmed he could not root afterwords.)
Presumably someone somewhere is already trying new ways to root this upgrade.
I've attempted root three ways now. NO GO!
Yes, I took one for the TEAM and went ahead and ran the RUU, it's fast clean and works fine so far.
BUT.....it closes the ability to ROOT....you've been warned!
Thanks,
Bubba.
thanks for being brave! Have you had any problems so far.
No problems at all.
Phone runs smooth and fast.
Only issue is that I have NO root now. But I knew the choices going into this option.
Having said that, and being able to officially tell everyone that it in fact breaks the root abilities.....is there anyone attempting to get root with this version or will we just ignore it?
Thanks,
Bubba.
I don't see it getting ignored. I wouldn't be surprised if someone somewhere was already working on trying to figure it out.
Is the 2.1 Droid rootable?

[Q] How to Unroot Sprint Hero?

Ive searched through a few forums and read a many posts. Its seems that many people have problems unrooting their phone, whether its using the wrong ruu or something else. & honestly the unrooting process confuses me a little. I would be happy if anyone could tell me the best/right way to unroot a sprint hero. I really want to do this is 1 try. All answers are appreciated...
Run the official Sprint RUU, takes one step to do.
Error 171
While running the ruu i got an error 171 message. It said it couldnt connect to my phone. I used the ruu from the post here because apparently i wont be able to reroot if I use the latest ruu. Can anyone help?
Nvm. I think it happened because i had my brower & word open. I closed them then restarted the process. My phone seems to be working just fine now.
I am about to sell my Hero (anybody interested?) and I want to completely unroot my Hero so that it is exactly how it would be if I never rooted it:
* OTA updates installed and enabled
* No way to boot into recovery
* Completely stock and updated
...like if I was to go buy one at the Sprint store right now. I will just use it completely stock until it is sold.
How would I go about this? Just install the official RUU? Which one should I install and where can I get it?

Just run the latest RUU and it will be back to stock, with no root and recovery.

radio version 2.42.02.10.29 help

Okay so here's my issue. I have been trying to root and reflash my phone for hours now but every guide I find uses a different radio than I have installed. I am using 2.42.02.10.29 and my computer fails to recognize that I have an android device connected whenever I run adb or any other program. Anyone have an idea on a quick fix?
Sorry if this is a silly question but I cant find any up to date guides for my radio anywhere and the most recent posts on the Hero are about 6 months old X)
Thank you!
The radio version does not matter if you are trying to root. The software version does. There are plenty of guides here for all of the released SW versions, I recommend Regaw's as it worked fine for me, but that was a version or two back(2.31blahblah.5) I'm assuming you have already downloaded the SDK and installed that crappy HTC sync, which you can uninstall once you have the drivers installed. All that done, check to make sure that USB debugging is checked and follow the appropriate guide.
Good luck!
yes I have the sdk and I installed and uninstalled sync already, I will look through the guides again and see if I can find another for my software version then
thanks!
update: I was looking at the correct number my phone is on the the same baseband verson as the radio version. And still no root method I can find to use that Baseband. I guess I need to find a way to update the baseband so... back to the forums

Umm, baseband is the radio.
Dude the radio doesn't matter in rooting. As long as you don't flash a GSM radio you will be fine. The radio you have is compatible with Aosp roms and sense roms. When you get rooted you can even change it if you like. But read extensively on that. Real "extensively" can't express that enough. But just for getting started, your radio/baseband is fine. You can find several ways of rooting in the forums. Cdma that is.
Something.About.Me.U.Dont.Like.
Its.Cool.I.Understand.AWAH
I'm just gonna add 1 more note. Your baseband is the most current version from sprint, and as others have said, will not affect your ability to root. The only thing that you cannot do with that baseband is flash the unrevoked forever s-off. But that is not the same as rooting.

Need help with my Sprint m7

[MANDATORY INTRODUCTORY SENTENCE DEPLOYED] Okay so as the title states I have an issue with my Sprint HTC One (m7) [MANDATORY INTRODUCTORY SENTENCE Complete].
The issue in question is lack of GPSability after flashing (you guessed it) Cyanogenmod 11 and currently CM12. I have tried multiple ROMs since then and all of them either don't fix the issue or wont install or work at all. So now I'm back to CM12 and everything works terrifically except for GPS...which I need...alot.
Now of all the research I've done on finding a fix for this infuriating problem has led me to believe that the only real way to fix this is to flash to a stock ROM, get a GPS fix/lock/signal/whathaveyou and then wipe and flash back over to your ROM of choice HOWEVER....heh heh I kinda un-acquired my backup, it somehow got erased during some blunder during the initial rooting process and I was dumb enough to not have saved a backup on my pc...oops.
Now I am aware that there are other ways of restoring my device to stock by other means such as RUU processes but I am not able to perform this process as my internet connection on my pc is dependent on my phone itself via tethering.
I also know that some have had luck by flashing new kernels however I have not been able to find one that worked for me.
So I guess what I'm asking is does anyone know of any other way I could restore my phone to stock using methods that don't require my pc to be connected to the internet, know of a place where I can find a flashable stock ROM or simply just fix my GPS issue outright?
I appreciate any assistance anyone can offer. Thank you in advance.

I forgot it was Rumrunner that needed internet conection to work, the RUU simply wouldn't work, again this time was no different. But, BUT, BUUUUUT, thanks to that link I WAS able to get access to answers that eventually solved my problem both primary AND secondary. Was able to get back to stock via a Stock Rooted Rom AND achieved GPS lock with CM12. You have my eternal thanks my friend. Your link opened the road to answers that two months of googling couldn't answer.
