i bought my nook today based on all the stuff happening here, been on xda since just before evo launch. i see alot of methods for rooting etc. i'm just confused. all i'd really like to do is get root with su, and get market, gmail working along with everything else i use. whats the easiest way to do this.
oh and i have totally forgotten how to use adb......been to long since i needed to. again sorry for the noob questions, i just want to do whatever works best and i can't tell what does. on and i'm running 1.0.0 should i upgrade or what???
oh and keeping the B&N software isn't a must, but would be nice
Update to 1.01, then use the latest build of autonooter. No need to use adb, as Android Market will be installed by autonooter. Your B&N stuff will still work, except for in-store reading.
nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor[/url]
This should be a good resource for you.
IMO, I would suggest updating to 1.01 as the above poster said, and then rooting using autonooter. But in addition I would also update to the new Market.
I have an interest in using my nook as both an e-reader and an android tablet. I saw a thread on dual booting and would like to find an appropriate bootable SD build that I can use on a daily basis. I have an interest to try any I can find but I could only find 2. If you know any please post the names and preferably the link also. Even various versions of the same build are welcome.
I think this list will also be useful to many people. I hope you can find some time to list what you may know.
Thanks all.

From what I've found in the Development Forum (right next to this Forum):
- Android 3.0 Honeycomb "Preview" from 2/07
- Android 2.3 Gingerbread "CM7" SD from 3/11
- Android 2.2 Froyo "Nookie" from 2/27
The first two require Market to be sideloaded using adb.
The last does not, but will soon be redundant, because there are now many B&N employees reporting that B&N will make available the Android 2.2 Froyo update for Stock Nook Color, which will include Flash and a B&N Market.
I suspect that update will significantly decrease the amount of "custom ROM" activity, because a lot of people do not want to void their warranty, and like the ereader software and the easy-to-use B&N menu system.
Those who are looking for specific apps will then flock to a simple Autonooter that preserves the new B&N 2.2 update, but gives root access.
And geeks who enjoy tinkering (probably a lot of us in this Forum ) will continue to do so.
Thank you, I will look into it. The two I tried needed the market sideloaded so I kind of shyd away from them at the time. I didn't have time to learn how to do it but maybe soon I will revisit it with a cool head.
That's good news about an official release from b&n.

I've seen modifying build.prop, using sqllite, and changing the name of the otacerts file. Doesn't seem build.prop is valid here until someone gets a hold of one with the new update. But I don't want to lose my root. So, what's the consensus? (please vote in the poll)
Here are the 3 mentioned:
1. Rename OTA Certs
2. Use Sqllite
3. Edit Build Prop
The build.prop is sort of experimental but seems to be working so far from reports.
The consensus is definitely to read the other 1000 threads on the subject before starting yet another one.
Really? There are 1000 other threads that compare all 3 options?
All the ones I read are where someone brings up one thing and then a few other people chime in on a different one. I was trying to find out, in one place, what the most recommended one was.
It is my fault for not creating a poll at first.
It is your fault for being a jackass.

I'd say he's read the 1000 threads, given the fact that he rattle off a list of suggested solutions from those threads.
FWIW, I too am interested in knowing if this issue has been settled. Just rooted my NC the other night, am really enjoying all teh apps I've downloaded and would be happy to block updates and wait for a rooted 2.2 update.
So if anyone knows the definitive answer ot the OP's question, please do let us know.

Don,
I haven't read the reputed 1,000 other posts on this topic, so I don't know what consensus may have been reached there, but this is my take on it:
- otacerts renaming isn't going to be reliable
- the sqllite fix (modding the fota.mode item) is a permanent fix, which eliminates any possibility of OTA updates creating problems
- modding build.props may work, even if you don't have a master to reference from.
I.e., some reasonable higher settings for ro.build.version.incremental, ro.build.description, and ro.build.date MAY do the trick, even if they're not a clone from a legit updated version. I don't know (perhaps someone else does) if perhaps only one of those is really necessary, E.g., something like ro.build.description=2.1.0.428.int.enc.rrdp.s39975 may be enough to do the trick, since it holds the main versioning string (currently at 1.1.0.328).
So my recommendation if you want to be sure would be to do the sqllite fix.

Flash CM7..... problem solved
I added links to the 3 methods I mentioned, for everyone's reference anyway. I did also read somewhere that someone said that installing CMR would stop OTA updates as well. But didn't see a lot of discussion about that.

I don't think CM7 is ready for prime time on the NC. Last I saw video driver and flash still had issues. I too would like to see a 2.2 stock update so it could be rooted. BTW I am running Nookie Froyo right now and it is pretty sweet.
I tried the CM7 Agnostic SDCard option and nightly build and, well... did I mention it isn't ready for prime time?
But I am one of those fringe lunatics that never says anything important, never gets noticed, and is instantly marginalized. I'll likely die an early death and no one will notice...
Sorry, to get back on topic, I don't think CM7 is ready yet for Nook Color.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Agree. CM7 is not quite up to where it needs to be as a daily driver.
build.prop flat out works... End of story.
Of course someone needs to get the build.prop from the new one when it's released, so if you're really scared about it, stay off wifi I suppose. But it usually takes a while before people start getting it.

The build prop only blocks one update. In order to block the Froyo update, you'd need the build prop for the Froyo update. That would only work until there is another update. Then you need the build prop from that update to block it. It becomes a vicious, never ending cycle. I may be incorrect in my understanding though.
I don't think anyone really knows at this point which is why there are "1000 threads" on the topic. We just all have to sit back, drink a beer or 7, and wait until the next update is being pushed out. I personally went with the SQlite edit in Root Explorer. Seemed like the easiest way to me.

That's what I'm going to try. I found the entry, but haven't changed it to "manual" from "auto" yet.
Update questions
I'm running Android 2.1 on my rooted Nook Color. What will happen if I don't block Barnes & Noble's upcoming update in April? Will my NC merely become unrooted and operate like a regular stock Nook Color? Is it possible that any damage will be done to the NC?
I'm actually curious to see exactly what an updated, unrooted NC will look like and how it will operate. I know that somebody eventually will come up with a way to root an Android 2.2 Nook.
My rooted 1.0.0 NC (Dec. ~8 autoroot) ignores the updates *DOING NOTHING AT ALL*. I can use the Market, download books from BN, etc.
Knock on wood!

From what I've read on other Andriod devices, it relocks the device and you lose superuser. Still, I'm curious if all the apps I downloaded with root will work after the update. The device was a b-day gift for my sister and she really loves the e-reader aspect, hence why HC and nookie froyo haven't been slapped on there.
Well, if you run the stock launcher on a rooted Nook, you still see all the apps you have downloaded from Market in Extras. So I would assume that the 2.2 upgrade could preserve the apps you have on there. Though, I would always recommend doing a backup, getting updated, wait for whatever exploit is employed and re-enable your apps.

Don't tell that the to hundreds of CM7 users running this as a daily.
Honestly, the only functionality "hurting" right now is video performance, as caused by an audio wierdity. Past that, I can't think of alot of broken stuff CM7 needs fixed. Sleep battery performance can be improved i guess... as it is, i like CM7 ALOT more than Froyo (no more SOD!)

I'm with you. Tried the CM7 from SDCard yesterday. It was okay, but it didn't exactly rock my world. Waiting for all the bugs to get worked out. In the meantime, sticking with Nookie Froyo.

I skipped over Nookie Froyo, but I used stock Root for awhile, and i've been on Cm7 for awhile and I love it. I agree video is not at 100% on cm7, but I really don't spend alot of time watching video on my nc at all. I downloaded the nook app from the market, and the tablet works great. The devs have done a great job, I have no issues using CM7 as my daily driver.
Gotta back you up madcat since we're the only pro CM7 users on this thread

Just as good of a chance at getting Sense UI on any device that isn't HTC. Slim.
Why so slim a chance?
I see custom Sense Roms all of the time for HTC devices.
I'm not meaning getting the NC stock launcher/app onto other tablets, but into Custom Roms for the NC itself.
They hack up the framework for their custom launcher/apps. Without the source code to their launcher there is little hope for running that on AOSP builds.
Now someone can make a custom 2.2 rom (winzippers) like you see for HTC, but those are not AOSP based. They are also in an illegal grey area....
With the exception of magazines there are a lot of alternatives to the stock reader. I don't see what the obsession with the stock software is.
Read to me Kids books is another feature, much more so than magazines (IMO) that makes stock worth holding onto for some, like me, that have children and actually use NC for books.
I like the layout of the stock launcher.
The Magazines are a plus,
The storefront is better then the marketplace nook app and since I do have alot of B&N books It is nice being able to actually read them. Cant with 3rd party readers and the Nook App in the marketplace BLOWs. Especially if you've alot of side loaded books. No cover art for sideloaded books and the layout sux.
I also LOVE the fact that nomatter where I am or what I am doing, there is a page icon at the bottom of the screen that takes me directly back to were I left off in the book I am reading, Also shortcuts that take me directly to the B&N Store or my Library from where ever I am are always present. It is integrated extremely well.
[edited]^^ Read to Me Kids Books is pretty darn cool to. My nieces and nephews love it.

+1, the regular android nook app blows. It doesn't even have a built in dictionary.
Would be great if we could port the nook library/store to other roms.
I am very curious as to why everyone thinks that the new update will make it easier to pull out the custom nook application. As Nemith pointed out, the apps rely on heavily modded framework, which means you can't just grab the APK and go. Despite being a 2.2 upgrade, i don't expect any difference there; the custom launcher shows that they are still heavily changing the Android framework..
I think the bigger issue is the big divide in users. As a tablet user, one of the first things i was happy to get rid of, was B&N's horrific interface changes (notification bar, etc), via CM7 (and Froyo before that). The "Read to me" feature was neat, but certainly not worth keeping in light of the horrible UI. But that is me, since i do not want it as an eReader. I guess others are more ok with it..
Well, it would be "easier" to work on porting from 2.2 to 2.2/2.3 rather then it would be from 1.6-2.2/2.3 as a whole.
Not that it would necessarily be "easy"
I never really had an issue with the B&N interface myself. Well, after installing ADW that is.
That's just user preference. Not everyone likes/dislikes the same thing.
I don't mind my tablet interface being slightly different from my phones.
My plan is to run stock on the EMMC and CM7+ from SDcard. Just need to take the leap and get them to dual boot and share the same Sdcard partition.
Homer
Why not just dualboot your EMMC? The process takes no time whatsoever, and it will still run the updated stock without a problem. Flash to stock 1.1, upgrade to 1.2, prep dualboot, migrate stock 1.2 to second partition and install CM7 nightlies unmodified to the primary partition. Its what I do, and what I'm planning on doing when 1.2 is rooted. Seems senseless to me to boot off an SD when you can do it all internally

You can only access the large library of "Nook Kids" color books using the stock reader. A few of the Kids titles will load on the B&N Nook app, but most will not as they are made specifically for the stock reader.
Once B&N releases their updated tablet reader app that is supposed to support Nook Kids books like the one for the iPad does, this won't be an issue anymore. So those of us that use the Nook Color (and Nook Kids books) to read to our kids, are stuck using the stock reader. My daughter LOVES the "Read-to-me" feature of Nook kids, and I would not be on her good side if i got rid of it just to run a custom ROM.
I dual boot Honeycomb on my MicroSD card, but the "Nootered" Stock ROM is what I use on a daily basis, as I use the stock reader a lot.
Does anyone know exactly what's changed in the magazine reading?

No offence to those who duel book their NCs, but I see no point in it whatsoever.
I really dont want to have to continuously reboot my NC just to boot an alternate version of the same OS.
I would much rather have the one. I never have to turn off my NC as is. I rather have everything on the one OS rather then have to boot back and forth just to use what I have on one or the other. Takes no time whatsoever? That does indeed take time everytime you have to power down and reboot back and forth.
I'm just waiting for the official update to be rooted now. XD

That's what I did with my modified SDcard install, base download and all the notes in;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1022786
Hopefully will save you some time...
To each their own -- I was simply providing another route of administration for someone who, unlike you, IS interested in dualbooting. Some of us have a point to it -- for example, I have magazine subscriptions held over from my original nook -- I like reading the things I paid for. Can't read them in the market version of the Nook app. That leaves me with one option: the stock install. However, it doesn't take care of my desire for a tablet operating system. CM7 does that perfectly. You know how long a reboot takes? 45 seconds. Its not the end of the world, and for those of us who DO have a purpose for it, it certainly isn't pointless.
Your comment, however, kinda was.

1.6?? The nook by stock runs 2.1. And i still say that no, it doesn't really make it easier, since we don't have the source code to see what B&N really changed. Sure, we can keep trying to run it, and grab files are we find them, but then you are overwriting other files which isn't desirable. Realistically, the only way we are safely porting the apps, is if:
1) B&N's app stops relying on modded framework; everything is neatly tucked in the apk
2) We somehow got B&N's Froyo source code (which they are under no obligation to release) and see what is being used and how to put it in CM7 code.

So I saw this vid on YouTube:
youtube.com/watch?v=zdmtkHkrgLE&feature=related
Shows you how to root in about 10 minutes or so...however...seeing some posts on this site about rooting it seems more complicated than this vid...however this vid is much easier to just follow and root your phone.
I have an Incredible S and would like to root...should I follow this vid or not?
Also...if I do a factory reset would I be able to just remove the root and get back everything to normal?
Thanks in advance.
This root is for the Motorola Droid 2, not IS.
I'm not sure if the cmd's apply the same for all android phones (I doubt it)
but your best bet is to just go through the process posted on these forums.
I know you want it 'convenient and fast' but you might end up learning a thing or two about being in control of your own phone.
Thanks for your quick reply...looks like I'll have to spend more time understanding rooting
if this is your first time doing this sort of thing with your phone, a little research goes a long way. using this forum to find information for your phone will allow you to get s-off and install custom roms; from there you can root to get extra functionality from your phone.
This link is a consolidated thread where all information for incredible s tools are. if you're new to flashing etc. you may want to do a little searching before getting started.
