Buying a g1 question - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to use it without having to go through the first stages like the registration I don't have t-mobile so I have no internet
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

the other way you can register is using wifi to do so. i dont think the google registration has anything do with t-mobile itself.

HTC ROMs let you choose a WiFi AP, AOSP/stock ROMs do not (well, RC29 does with an adb command).
Anyway, I think all >=1.5 ROMs allow you to skip sign in, so you can then enable wifi, open a Google app and sign in.
Also there's an easter egg which works on some builds, where you can skip sign in by tapping four corner of the screen.

cheers for that.

A Quick Note About Sherpa
With Cyanogen already including Sherpa in his latest experimental build, there have been a few issues that have arisen. I feel that, because of these issues, any devs who are considering adding Sherpa to their builds should make users aware of these issues. If you are such a dev, feel free to add the following list to your first post. Also, you should make it clear that this version of Sherpa is pre-release.
If you wish to add Sherpa to your builds, you can download the .apk here: http://gynecologistcobra.net/apps/Sherpa.apk
Major Issues
Do not open the keyboard while Sherpa is running. It may cause it to crash.
Sherpa does not work properly on non-US devices. In the worst cases, it will fail to connect to the server. Even if it does connect, it may not be able to discover your surroundings.
Sherpa may fail to launch completely.
Sherpa requires GPS to be active to auto-locate you.
Sherpa may turn on your Wi-Fi while it is running.
Minor issues
Auto-rotate does not work in Sherpa.
It also sometimes just won't start, freezing up while trying to acquire the GPU. Awesome app though

Well, it was designed for the Magic, which has more RAM, ergo it can freeze on start up.

It definitely requires GPS for auto-locate to work. I've also seen it turn on my wifi connection.

Actually, now that you mention it, I have seen the 'Open Wi-Fi Networks' notification flash up while I was running Sherpa. While my WiFi was turned off.
I think this is definitely a pre-release. If you watch logcat, there are hundreds of exceptions being thrown.

Possibly using skyhook wireless wifi geolocation service for poor gps visibility situations?
Thanks. This is working on cy 3.6.81 with no problems for me
Good stuff on the bugs list but im thinkin the sherpa app that got leaked was a beta version and there will be plenty of bugs, so don't hold your breathe yet but i guess wait till the official once releases.

Good to see you've calmed down a bit from JAC's thread, Johnny
We know it's a prerelease version. However, people may want to start putting it in their builds, like Cyan has done, so there should be a bugs list.

That is weird, it does take a few seconds to show, maybe it takes longer on Hero since it is a slower ROM.
After playing around with this app.. I must say its definitely one of the best "places" type app out there. I have noticed a couple things that havent been mentioned. First off, i havent had any fc even after opening the keyboard. The app screen doesnt rotate but is still functional for me in landscape.
I assume this app you can set your location manually via zipcode, city, etc. I would imagine that this also picks up via GPS.
On the bottom where it tells me my location, it is set for my home. GPS isnt picking me up elsewhere, as i am not at home. When i search by zip it works fine.
I also tried to go to google maps and lock on gps there.. but no go so far.
Like i said, i know there will be some small bugs considering this app isnt meant for the g1 Anyone else experience the GPS not locking your current location?
My GPS is off. On google maps I get the correct location but in Sherpa it thinks I'm at home, not at work.

Yeah.. I hear you. If i have my gps enabled and go the the Menu in Sherpa, select Go to Location. There is a "Use Current location" Then the little circle to the left of you displayed location with "think" for a couple seconds and stay at the same location... I dont even know how it picked up that location.
If my gps in not enabled then the circle with "think" for as long as you let it.

App To Drastically Improve Battery Life.

Did a search and it didn't show any results about an app called Juice Defender....so here's a post about it.
Simply put it disables your apn when your phone is asleep then turns it back on when you go to use your phone.
It will really surprise how much it saves. Instead of my phone having 5% battery life left after normal usage in a 13-15 hour day, I now have 30-35% percent left.
I suggest everyone give it a try. It has customizable options and is a nice alternative for those not wanting to double the size of their g1 with an extended battery, but want more from their battery.
Just search "Juice Defender" in market or here's the link to the website: http://www.latedroid.com/2010/01/juicedefender.html

An APN is only required for 3G, so it should still be fine as EDGE/GSM would still be available. Thats the theory anyway.

Exactly I still receive all my calls and texts, and it also has a schedule so it will turn the apn on for a short time every so many minutes. Mine is scheduled for every 30mins my phone is asleep, it turns the apn on for 3 mins. This way I still recieve any updates that require a data connection, such as email or facebook.

The Access Point Name (APN) is required for GPRS/EDGE/3G. It's my job
OT
The reason why the custom ROMs have the "big apn list" is because when you use different carrier sims the APN is typically always different (except a lot of companies use "internet" for their APN). When I went to China last month my G1 automatically knew the APN for China Mobile. China Mobile doesn't have 1700mhz 3G and I used the APN appp to disable internet access so I wouldn't burn through my prepaid minutes. Very nice.
Im not sure this app works. I turned it on, left Hello AIM signed in, sent some IM's to my phone from my PC and my phone was still able to recieve the IM's in sleep mode.
something that I do is that I turn off my gps and my sync option also I only select my sinc for my gmail and not my contacts or my calendar (I unchecg those) I disable the option that allows google to get my location automatically and share my info with google
when Im not using the internet I select the option of 2g networks only
and that saves me ALOT OF BATTERY

Not sure why that's happening, the app definetly works. There's a half second delay when you wake up your phone and you can see the apn being enabled again, as it wasn't there previously. some things to consider:
-You didn't actually activate the app. It's not enough to just install it you have to click on it and select activate.
-You sent the IM's immediately after putting your phone to sleep. It isn't an immediate turn off of the apn, some data may still get through before it completely turns it off.
-Or it maybe a custom ROM problem. Maybe some unique setting is set so your apn behaves differently than the app expects.

This is what I did (and still do) before I installed this app to save battery. Try using the app and you'll see your battery life will almost double.
I can only agree. Works fine for me. Battery lasts considerably longer.

I don't see it on the market?
I see it on developer website as free and has a barcode. I scan it with my barcode scanner and it didn't find on the market either. Is this compatible with cupcake 1.5 ROM or only 1.6 or higher? I like to give this app a try.
Update: OK I looked at the FAQ on dev site and it's not compatible for cupcake ROM. So I guess I have to wait until 2.1 rom comes out.. bummer.

i just searched for it and it is in the android market.
I did a search in the market and found it... it seems to work like the OP said it would... I am still able to receive texts, and I can see the delay when the 3g comes back on. Only time will tell though... If you download the free version, some things are disabled. I might end up getting the paid version later if this really helps.
alright, so i installed it and played around with the settings.
i rebooted my phone and now it doesnt really boot up.
on the lockscreen, i get the 'no service' message. and then it gives me a ton of force closes one right after the other.
so basically, it doesnt allow my phone to boot up. doesnt even get to the part where it gets signal or anything.
im just gonna restore from an earlier backup and see what was wrong. but dunno if this has happened to any of you...

Update firmware no cell service

I've got the motor Droid. Had service then canceled a few months ago. Been using wifi just fine.
Reset to factory defaults just fine a couple weeks ago. I have a question.
1: How come google maps don't work anymore? Is it cus no cell? Should work anyway since this phone has GPS chip built in. Should not need cell service. Maps says no data connection and wont lock on to any satellite. Can maps work without cell service?
2: how do I get activate phone screen from coming up everytime I turn my phone on? I hit home button and it goes away but it is there everytime I boot the phone. Can I disable it somehow? I have no need for cell service.
3: where can I get capacitive stylus for the phone locally? Like best buy or some other place.
4: how can I update to android 2.2 when it's released?
5: I notice when surfing in the default browser I have to tap more then once on links to get them to load. It really bites. Happens sometimes but enough to annoy me.
6: any idea if there'll be android 2.2 or 2.1 phone or tablet of 5" min screen? I don't need phone service but would like a much bigger screen.
7: anyone know of a stable free shoutcast apparently? A online radio apparently crashes and freezes every single time I've used it so I gave up.
8: how can I backup my browser bookmarks free?
9: is there an apple iPhone copy paste feature somewhere? Built in android highlite text sucks. Can't see text below finger nor can you get accurate enough in text where you want the cursor by using yer fingers. Really sucks and I'd love something better like how apples pops up the magnifier when you hold yer finger down.
10: how can I get global copy and paste?
Thanks very much for reading and helping.

The GPS chip works without a cell connection, but Google Maps requires a data connection to download map data. Theoretically you should be able to plot a route using Maps/Navigation while connected to a WiFi network, then disconnect and have the GPS lead you to your destination (since it caches the map data for your entire trip at this point), but if you deviate from the planned route, it won't be able to reroute you or resume giving directions until you get back on the cached path. Your only other real alternative is to buy a navigation app like CoPilot, which stores complete map data on your SD card.

Never seen one in stores, but of course this depends entirely upon what "local" is for you. You should be able to find them online pretty cheaply, though.

This is definitely the one thing I miss about the iPod Touch. I'm sure Apple has four or five patents on it, though...
when opening maps it gets nothing. No sat or map pics at all. This from no data? How will it show where I'm going then even with cached from wifi?
Immediate do the capacative stylus work on Droid? Like which could I order?
I don't have cell service so how would an ota update work?
Thanks so much.

setting up wifi with no sim card???

Is there a way to root/modify the g1 to use wifi without have a t-mobile account or sim? I posted a similar question under development, which it turns out was the wrong place. Any help would be greatly welcomed. Thanks much!!
thank you
Check out CaNNoN202-CompleteEclair-v2.2 they had a patch zip so you can choose WiFI at startup. Also most of the Froyo roms have a skip setup option setup WiFi then logon to google.

I will look at it. I don't think my post was clear enough though. My g1 has a treasury upgrade to rc29 on it. When I turn it on I can't get past the initial sign in part because I don't have a similar card or valid account with T-Mobile.

If you can get on WiFi and (create) login to your gmail, you can use it with out the phone part in till and if you want to put a working sim chip in it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316 ADD_DATE=
if you have RC29 then you probably have root (confirm by typing "reboot" in contacts app or wherever, just type the word reboot. If it reboots you have root. If not -- then you dont.
and then adb shell these lines as put forth by jesusfreke and you will bypass the sign in logo and get to wifi....
i love this hack.

[Q][DEV] Shamu Binaries

Question for you ROM developers/builders: What binaries are you using when you build AOSP for this device? On my builds, I can't seem to get Mobile Data working. I'm using the latest build for TMO, as I am on TMO. I verified the APN settings are correct and tried four different radios (M1, M2, 17R, 14R), but nothing seems to allow mobile data.
I also can't seem to get videos to display in apps like Facebook/Instagram, etc. I tried with both AOSP Web View and Google Web View, but neither worked.

i tell you what, i think you did everything right. with tmobiles radio, sometimes you just have to let it sit there until it connects. after connecting the first time, itll be faster after. just let it sit there, or connect to wifi, itll eventually connect.
