[DIY] Rubberized soft touch battery door - Nexus S Accessories

I love my Nexus S. Yes, the build quality is plastic, yet anything but cheap. I've seen a lot of compliments on the slick back cover (battery door). However, it's not to my taste. I find it to be overly reflective, a fingerprint magnet, and slippery to the point where I would drop my phone if it were not for the reverse chin.
Solution: DIY Soft touch battery door (rubberized back cover)
I simply applied four thin layers of spray on black PlastiDip. As in the instructions, make sure to shake the can thoroughly for a full minute and keep the can of PlastiDip a full 12-16 inches from the back cover of the phone. Wait a full 30 minutes between coats. Make sure to spray all the way around the edge of the battery door into the back of the cover. If you do not coat the edge your coating will eventually begin to peel at the edge. The easiest method is probably to mask off the contacts for the NFC antenna and spray the entire cover, inside and out. That way there is no rubber seam to peel at the edge.
Here are the results. I think the images phone2.jpg and phone3.jpg most accurately show the results. The closeups tend to make the cover look more textured than it actually appears.
PlastiDip is easily peeled off if you start at an edge, but difficult to peel off unintentionally. If I ever get bored with the finish or want to sell the phone I can remove the rubber within seconds.

yeah i used this for my galaxy S, pretty good idea actually lol

I like it. Did you sand before painting? If so what grade? Thanks in advance.

No sanding required. Just a thorough cleaning with water then spray on PlastiDip.

I dont think any sanding is needed because it simply peels off.

Is plastidip messy? because I'm gonna try this when I get home but it 20F outside and Im not wait thirty mins between coats in such weather lol. So I hope its doable in the house. However when I do mine I might put tape over the Google logo and peel it off after all dry and clean because I dont wanna lose that, I could careless about the samsung tho lol

Whats great is you dont need to sand and ruin the cover and simply peels off.
Thanks for sharing think im going to try this, might do clear color

I wonder if Walmart sells PlastiDip

But what about other cases or the front of the phone? You can't fit a regular cases now or any sort of holster. How is it in the pocket?

Even with four thin coats, it doesn't add enough bulk to prevent another case from fitting on the phone. For the screen, I use a Zagg for now until something better comes out. As for the feel in the pocket it is a little tacky. It doesn't slide in and out of the pocket as smoothly as I'd like, but in my opinion it's a necessary trade off. I still prefer the rubberized back.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

But what happens if you put a holster/case on? Won't it degrade the rubber?

What about the NFC chip? this is what worries me about the Nexus S, the NFC relies on this "cheap, plastic" cover... The NFC chip needs to be within centimeters of the other object's NFC chip. Wouldn't this interfere? Anyone try after applying a case or using this rubberized method?

This coating doesn't add centimeters of thickness to the back, so it should be fine.

Just make sure u hold can 12"-16" from cover I was too close on my first coat so I sprayed too much on there. But it looks fine

What exactly is it called? "PlastiDip" ? I searched for that on Lowe's website and found nothing.

Many thin layers works best. Also, you have to make sure the rubber on the sides is as thick as the back, and spray it all the way around the lip of the battery door. If you don't coat around the edge into the inside of the battery door your rubber will eventually begin to peel at the edge.

Is It Hard To Scratch The Bezel?

I've had the Note for quite some time now. I only use the Flip Cover and Screen Protector. I have yet to use Zagg or an actual Case. I always keep in phone in the pockets of my Jeans/Pants--I'm used to placing it on a bare surface like the table and a rough surface as well like the ground when taking photos / videos. I've had not a single scratch so far. I've checked under light sources and even tried using a magnifying glass but can't locate even a single minimal scratch. Is it that hard to scratch? I know this is not aluminum or metal. What kind of plastic polymer is this? Lol.
Be very careful, it's actually very EASY TO SCRATCH. I don't know the exact material the bezel is made of.

Strange, I've been using it aggressively, putting it in my pants pocket, walking, and not a single scratch.
I dont have a case or protector for my Note but the side and top parts of the bezel are.fine. The bottom part has scratches though as I normally put it in a cup type holder in my car.
So id say its still easy to scratch.

I guess the best thing to apply is GadgetShieldz / Zagg.

Actually, I mostly wear jeans. My SGSII over a 7 month period got scratched lightly. So my jeans scratched them from all the going in and out motions.

Metal bumper case question.. For those who own one.

Does your metal bumper case have a slight raise from the side to prevent scratches to both front and back especially the camera lens?
Do you think it would fit with a slim case?
Please post a link where you bought it.
Thank you very much and pardon my engrish!

I bought one a couple of weeks ago. I think the aluminium case gives good screen protection, but although it is reasonably low profile the few millimetres each side do seem to make the Note 2 feel much bigger. I personally don't think it's the most elegant case, they look OK from the front, but the back doesn't seem to follow the flow of the stock battery case too well.
Don't get me wrong, the phone fits in perfectly without any movement but not my cup of tea. I lose one bar on the phone signal when the case is on, NFC is fine.
Possibly a like or hate accessory!
Thanks for all the replies. That was my main concern. I wanted a metal bumper case that has a slight rise to protect the camera lens. I'm going to buy a ballistic 3 layer protection case since GN2 can be easily damage even at waist height drop.
Why ballistic? Because its relatively cheap, unlike otterbox and offers awesome drop protection. Had one for E4GT and money worth spending.
Thanks again.

i use that one. slight raises on the front and back to protect the camera. It adds a little weight to the phone but its not unbearable. I actually like it. I also got the armror suit military shield screen and back protector. Screen protector was not compatible with the case, cause when I removed the phone from the case, the sliding portion of the front peeled the screen protector off. and the added thickness of the armorsuit full body protector makes it very snug in the case. probably the reason why it the screen protector peeled off as I was trying to remove it.

I'd hate to use the bumper case where you need a small screw to open (i think I saw a bumper case like that once).

If theres any UK users in this thread that wants a black aluminium bumper for free then let me know and PM me your address. Elago slim fit case w/rubber grip

I bought the elago case off amazon for $10. Great slim fit case except no grip.
So I went to Home depot and bought a can of black tool handle grip spray. Taped case, scuffed where I wanted spray to stick with scotch brite pad and sprayed.
Now slim and grippy but not thick. It still slides in and out of pocket with ease.
Spray with thin coats every 30 mins untill desired amount. If you spray to heavy let dry and rub off with hand or scrapper. I speed dried with heat gun. Screwed up and to thick 1st time but perfect the 2nd.
Anyway thought I'd share with anybody looking for slim with grip case make you own.
Fyi, I only found black but they make yellow, blue and white I think..

Plastidip is the right stuff. I have done this a bunch to many different items. I sprayed the back plate of my note 2 because I like to use bumper cases. This gives it some grip. Like the op said, just use thin coats. If you don't like it, it just peels off when it's dry. It does rub off of the back plate after a while, but it is so easy to do again.

Sounds great! Will work on it tomorrow! Thanks so much for your reply!
Yes, thin coats and tape off the inside of case as close to edge as possible.
I went to pepvoys and found a can of trunk bed liner like rhimo liner which works better and hasn't faded or rubbed off. It sprayed thick but levels out nicely. Take precaution to any runs or drips on edges and with flat edge run along to cut drip and it should level out. I did just the outer sides

You definitely need to setup up lil spray area jig for case. I have kinda spray shop in my garage but basically just postisioned on 2 spray can lids and walked around spraying lightly. Waiting about 10-15 mins to recoat maybe less depending on room temps. Just keep eye on any would be drips and run them off with flat edge. I bought 3 elgo cases so I was afraid to F one up. Try a full body skin. I had a carbon fiber one that added some grip, but removed it. ...I didn't like the carbon fiber around the edges of the phone. I'm currently using the Spigen Matte full body skin. It adds some grip on my opinion, butsome may say it didn't add enough. Just my pinion of course.

First thing I do to any new phone (or laptop) is throw a couple egrip strips on the back... incredible traction...nothing slimmer...never need a case cause it doesnt slip out of your hands!

until i found a case i liked, i applied a generic, large, clear Zagg screen protector to the battery cover. i had to use 2 pieces and it was not an exact fit, but there was enough coverage to make it less slippery.
Try using flygrip

Because of my limited number of posts I'm not allowed to include a link. The company/brand is PLAST-DIP. You'll be looking for the Clear in a spray can. If you'd like to get creative they also offer an assortment of colors and "smokes" that make a translucent effect.

Does this type of spray grip tend to peel or scale easily with everyday usage? I was thinking of something to add more grip to my otterbox commuter case which tends to be on the slippery side. Is it easily removeable if needed and does it attract lint/dirt/etc?

Hard Plastic Case

Does anyone know if any of the snap on cases available for the Nexus 7 are made of a hard plastic? I can't tell from any of the ones on Amazon or eBay if they are a flexible rubber type that snaps over the Nexus, or if they are a hard plastic. I need one that is a hard plastic simply because I plan to cut it up, and need the pieces to retain their shape once cut.
What I basically want to do is cut out the middle section that covers the back of the Nexus, and use the 2 side pieces on the back of my dash bezel to hold the Nexus in place. Currently there is about a 10mm gap between the screen and the bezel face. If I can find a hard plastic case to mutilate, then I can slide the Nexus into the side pieces, causing it to be flush with the bezel face.
Thanks.

The official Asus-Nexus Travel Cover is a good, thin, fairly priced, hard-plastic case. So far, its my favorite of all cases , and I have tried my fair share.
Most of the ones with front covers are hard plastic, if you go for a case made of TPU it's going to be soft.
