Different ROMs - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, can anyone give a brief synopsis on the main differences between the current popular Froyo ROMs? I have been running leaked Froyo ROM since it came out but about to reflash. Alot more ROMs have been developed since then, and all seem to have good reviews. I'm not sure which one to choose now.

Personal preference and what you want/need.

They all have their ups and downs. They are all great in their own way. unfortunately I need to ask you to take this to the q&a. We need to keep the forums in order.

if this does not provide you with adequete information on what ROM to flash, then flash them all and see for yourself
Hello im new here but i have to put my two cents in on this one.
If so many people are interested about which roms are best then why not run a "favorite rom thread"
I'll bet it would do really good.I know i would like to hear what other people have to say about their favorite roms.anyway it might keep down to just one thread instead of people starting new ones all the time.

ORRRRRRRRRRRR new people could do their research on a rom, read the threads, and then flash and determine for themselves.

well i think reading what people have to say about their favorite roms in a dedicated thread is more interesting and adds more to the board than not doing it at all.
people are gonna have to research and flash in the end no matter what.why not talk about it?
Because every rom will react differently with different phones, which is why people need to find out what works best for them. Devs already have recommended settings on their first post.
I think the whole point of the layout of xda is to not single one dev out as godlike with their own section, no polls for best, and to let the threads live their own life.
even so...there already is a favorite rom poll/thread... search for it. i remember seeing it and no one uses it
Just flash ROMs and see which one you like best. It's what I did.
I've thought about using my blog / site waiting for a purpose to do a series of personal reviews of various ROMs for my G1 but I don't know if it'd be worth it with so many Android sites out there. Seeing questions like this quite a lot makes me want to try but it depends on demand. Time is not an issue as I have a lot of it spare currently.
Thing is, most people only try out one ROM because they get recommendations from someone else. In the end, one ROM gets propagated above all the other cuz no one else has the guts to try out all of them...

Who Has The Best Eclair ROM

Wassup guys, just wanted to see if anyone can suggest what they believe to be the "Best Eclair ROM" right now. I am currently using Manups Eclair ROM v. 1.5 which is good and all but it is also the only Eclair ROM I've tried and I don't really feel like flipping through all these Eclair ROMs so if anyone can be so kind as to suggest that would be great, so I'll just go with the one everyone suggests more or at least try it...Thanks in advance.
It depends on what you'd like.
I'd recommend trying out KingKlick's eclair ROM and the OpenEclair one too. You might like one of those.

try searching through here.
Macrophage001, what was the point of your response? I found this thread in a Google search because I pretty much asked the same thing the author did. I'm no developer and I don't have time to spend thumbing through the thousands of threads and responses within XDA. In spite of what you may want to believe, it's people like us who make sites like this a success People with questions. In all honesty why can't you just help? Why be a smart ass? I can't convey my frustration enough.
Why? Because part of the site rules are to not ask for the best rom. It doesn't matter whether you are a dev or not, you can still read the first 3-5 pages in the dev forum, download roms, copy them, backup your current, and flash away. Which leads to you formulating your own opinion.
After trying out three different 2.1 roms for Eclair .. I find that Cannon has the best one out, its had the least errors and is lightning fast..

Ehh...sticks and stones =/
Cannon202's Eclair is def the most stable and fastest Eclair ROM Just needs video support like all the others and it would be my everyday ROM
i personally like king klicks his last the longest

So where do I start....

I am getting a HTC Hero from Sprint tomorrow, and I want to upgrade it to whichever Rom is the fastest and most stable. I see that Froyo is still being worked out, and after browsing 36 pages of comments, It seems to be about 95% complete. The last phone I flashed is the Cingular 8125 (yeah, I've been out the loop for a while). If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Re: Where do I start....
First of, Congrats on jumping on the Android bandwagon.
Here is a list of things you need to do.
1. Root your hero.
2. Then you need to find a good ROM that fits your needs. Some people like almost no stock apps, some people like all the stock apps on the Sprint Hero. I Have tried almost all the new ROMs that are on XDA and after benchmarking all of them, I have found Purehero 2.1 to be the fastest. it consistently benchmarks at 6300 milliseconds. here is the link for pure hero.
you should download the OC version.
3. But don't take my or anyone's word for it. Try different roms and see what you like. some people like speed, some like visual aspect. i like both and i think purehero is the best there is that gives both.
4. Just search how to root sprint hero in xda and there are several pages that offer help.
5. also search purehero for the ROM
Is the Purehero 2.1 ROM based on android 2.1 or 2.2?

It's based on 2.1.
One other thing to note: Learn which forums are appropriate for your various posts and questions. For example -- this forum "Android Development" is reserved for posts specifically about ROM and kernel development stuff.
Your question about 'How should I get started' belongs in either the "Q&A" forum or the "General" forum, where basic questions and answers are handled.
Also know that the "Search this Forum" boxes are your friend. You could have found plenty of answers to your question without even having to post a topic like this in the wrong place.
All that aside, welcome to the world of rooted HTC Heroes.
you are right...to be honest, this is so overwhelming. I looked through various post, but wasn't sure what to search, because I had no idea what I was searching for.

[Q] Which is the best rom for the cappy?

I'm starting this post as a guide for people trying new roms, I thought of asking which rom are you using right now, but that would be a popularity contest.
I've been an android user for a while, but I'm new with the cappy, as a new owner, I didn't know which rom is the best rom around, so far I've tried at least 5 (firefly, darky, apex, stock 2.1, stock 2.2) But I don't wanna say which one I'm using right now cause I don't wanna influence the results of this post.
So, I'm Gonna post all roms I've see and ask the users what you think, please, after voting, talk about your experiences with the roms you've been using, I feel this could help choosing a rom for every new owner.
If I'm leaving a rom out, please let me know and I'll post it.
If you are a developer and you don't wanna see your rom here, please let me know via PM it and I'll remove it.
Alright, I've tried to edit the poll but as it turns out, only moderators can edit polls, so, please, I'll try to contact a moderator to include other roms in the poll, but I don't wanna bug a moderator for every single rom, so, If you guys be so kind, which other roms would you like to see here?
So far I only have one suggestion from xhozt to add victory, I would like to add at least other 5 roms. Suggestions?
This is a bad idea. First off its a matter of opinion and secondly all the dev work hard on their roms, how is it fair to say one is better than the other?

Yes, as choosing a phone its a matter of opinion, and yes, not all roms work the same and they don't have the same performance, are you implying cause they are working hard on their roms they shouldn't be rated?
What you are saying its like saying movies shouldn't be rated cause people work on them.
We should have an honest poll an opinion for guidence, this shouldn't mean we are disregarding other people works, I support all developers, but as a person, I believe some roms I've tried are better than others. The posts I've seen have not helped me making a decision on a particular rom, so far all have been trial an error. Not every rom is perfect, but some are better than others.
On a final note, Its just a poll, I'm just asking people around, if this polls were more extensive, I would ask more questions as memory managment, multitasking performace, etc. But I can only ask one question.
Lol thats different. We are talking about community dev's spending their part time working on projects. Don't know you shouldn't compare or rate.

Sure thing buddy, I'm trying to edit the poll but I cant find where is that option
It is a bad idea only because it has been tried before and failed. Best rom threads are locked because every user has differences in what they like, as well as how their phone reacts to the rom. A search next time could show how many of these threads, including the last rom poll are locked.
Just so you know, you can't edit the poll once it has been created.
Glitch kernel let me OC to 1.4!

I still believe work can be rated, but I'm not rating individual works, Im asking for people's opinion, if a developer has something to say about it, and want their rom removed, I would gladly remove it. I won't do it cause you don't think is right, this is a free site last time a checked.
Another one of these??
No thanks. Closed.

No point in having this thread. Every rom has its rights and user. You can try and find out yourself. There are only handful of ROMs. Important thing is still 4.2.1 is not that ready yet. If you want, try OFFICIAL NIGHTLIES FROM CM10.1 or Asylum(cm10.1) or Stunner 2.0(AOKP) which I have used before. I might have missed out some here but never tried them. My choice would be a Stunner... . Please feel free to try them and find out yourself rather than somebody suggesting you to. After all they are here to download and try. Good luck.

First, wrong section.. You are asking questions so this should be in the q&a
Second, that's very subjetive questions.. The rom that has it all and it's the best thing that ever happened in my life... Could be the worst piece of crap for you.. So go find out by yourself

C'mon guys, can we show a bit more love here?
I don't think this should be in Q&A, as it's a question that's meant to generate discussion and comment. It could easily have been rephrased as - "Comparisons between 4.2.1 ROMS". It doesn't have a question mark at the end, so now it's OK even though it would be discussing the same thing? Or it could have been a "POLL: Best 4.2.1 ROM", and it'd be ok?
And yes, we can tell people to go try all the ROMs out there, but what's the harm in someone asking for other users comments on their experiences? Afterall, isn't this meant to be a place of discussion? I've found it enormously useful to have discussions like the OP is asking for, and it'd be a shame that these discussions don't take place anymore.
To try to contribute to the OP's question - I've used Asylum and have loved it. It has saved my Note. Had been very frustrated with the lag that came with the TW ROMs but now it's brought my Note back to life again. I've been wanting to try Stunner, and based on Galaxtus' comment that he prefers Stunner the most, I will give that ROM a try too. (So thank you, Galaxtus for that very helpful comment!).
official CM 10.1 of course.

As with all "best" threads, there is no best. You need to try some out, and see which one is best for you.
