[Q]How to get rid of Old files - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys excuse this maybe stupid question but searching arround didnt help me much.
My problem is this:
I have made 3 Firmware update,1 from Kies and 2 from odin, and in all cases things went wrong and had to make factory resets. This kept so many files in my sd and now everytime i start the phone it takes about 5 minutes to scan the cards.
I m currently on JPX and very happy with it,and dont want to change, but want to get rid of all those files in the sd card that do nothing. What should i do then?

If you mean /mnt/sdcard, backup all the files you want to save and do a format in the sdcard settings. No important system files get saved there. So it should be safe.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

i m not sure what you mean bu saying mnt/sdcard....i meant the pace where programs use to store some files,i ve got thousands since i have installed many many programes, but unistalled them cuz i didnt like them...
so you think going in recovery and wipe sdcard will keep my syste as t is but clear all the programms and the unused files???

SD Card F******D Help

Hello one and all, please dont flame me for this post but my SD Card is bolloxed and i need to get all my apps onto a new one.
I have new a 8 GIG Class 6 to transfer to i have already partitioned with Ubuntu but i dont know how to copy my apps off the old card to the new
one and for those loaded apps on my phone to stay working.
I have used the search on this forum but there is so many different ones i have read i am now totally confused.
I did root my phone myself and put on a Cyanogen rom so i am fairly ok with
certain stuff but this has me proper confused is there just one one click method, i read something about "SwitchRom"
i dont want to lose all my apps but this is getting a bit desperate now
Thanks
Your apps are never lost even if you use a new sdcard and use Ubuntu to copy and paste the apps to the new card, you still have to reinstall alll the protected apps. So depending on how many apps you have installed , I would do a wipe and reinstall them all.
Or do a nandroid backup, don't forget you might have to run fix_permissions if you get any errors.

[Q] Can't wipe internal SD, can't replace update.zip file etc

Hi Folks,
I've been searching all over the internet for 2 days and trying many ways to fix my european Galaxy S i9000 but i havent find any information that could help me on this task.
The device is unrooted, is running Eclair 2.1update1, firmware XJWMJ8, the final part on the firmware update I could not make it because every time I tranfer the "update.zip" file (139mb), I shut down the device and go to recovery mode... try to execute the file and it dont go trough the end, it means does not work properly.
When the device restarts I can see on the root of the Internal SD are the old "update.zip" file (only 1.5mb).
I even tried format the internal SD card trough the PC running windows xp, it took long time to do it, after all I transfered again the 139mb update.zip file and tried again the flash trough recovery mode, what I surprise I had because I could not make it again... but when I got back to the internal SD card there was everything as before I formatted.
I also tried format inside the android, there shows 13.43GB total space and 9.86 available space, after I unmount the SD card and format, it gets back just like before (13.43GB/9.86GB) just like I ever did format.
The i9000 after boot comes up tons of messages about apps which needs force close, they come many times and is about all app on the device, they keep coming until I can not get to see the LCD screen anymore. I tried erase all information many times, I tried to delete older accounts and nothing works, I can't access the market. It seens to not be bricked but also can not be fixed...
My only help now is there somebody had something like it could explain here how to fix.
I am still thinking that is something about the internal SD card and I can not wipe the information on it, since the information keeps getting back to it, like an automatic backup pulled by a trigger everytime I tried to wipe the info.
Is there any way to acess the Device's RAM to check the content or search over the device about the location where these files might be saved?
I cannot install ClockWorkMod recovery because the issue with the update.zip file, I havent tried the CF-Root because I am not sure which one I need, so as you can see: I am almost tied to this situation.
Any help would be very appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Paulo
Flash a new firmware using Odin and all your problems will go away.
Thanks.
I already made it several times with many different firmwares, all had the same results and so I stopped to do it and leave the device with this last one, at least until I know other options.
Wipe the lot.

Use Block 2 Odin method .

[Q] Need Serious help !!!

hello everyone
i got the incredible S 3 weeks ago and all was gr8
a day ago something happened while it was connected to my comp and my
phone SD card was formatted, now the SD has no files and no folders - its completly blank - and back on my phone maps and stuff tells me "files are missing" blah blah you got the point. seems like neccery files came ON SD card now its now finding it - and its not apps i installed - its things came with the phone. also HTC sync install files are gone and basically every thing that was originally on the SD card as i got it from HTC factory is gone.
now i know HTC sync is downloadble but you get the point of me wanting everything back as it was right of the box.
so i did factory reset but still files are missing cuz it cleand my phone bun didn put the originally SD stuff back, its still empty.
so
1.how do i get all the FACTORY DEFAULT files as i got them before they were deleted ?
2. what does it really do if you format your SD Card? aside to delete pics and video i made? does it really a problem or im just going crazy for nothing?
3. how do i get my phone to be as just the way i took it out of the box, inside and out, phone and SD card...all..?
tnx!!!
Are you looking for some specific things on sd card?
For maps, go to locations and download the map of your country.
For htc sync, download on your pc and copy to sd card.
I dnt think any other files would be missing
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
thats the problem - i donk know what have been gone...
for example the LOCATIONS App is asking me to download files that are missing on the SD card, but it wont work...dk why
so thats why im asking :
1.how do i get all the FACTORY DEFAULT files as i got them before they were deleted ?
2. what does it really do if you format your SD Card? aside to delete pics and video i made? does it really a problem or im just going crazy for nothing?

1. and 3. Install an RUU file. These are Rom Update Utilities files. They will flash your phone to untouched stock files. It depend on where you are from, but get one from there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1066949 (If you are in Europe, the first one should work fine)
2. To me, if you format your sd card, you only lose your media files (pics, videos, mp3s) and also the data files from downloaded application that have been installed on it (the Apps to SD thingie introduced in Froyo). But your phone should still be working nonetheless. Though maybe Google Maps and stuff were installed on the SD out of the box by HTC.
Anyway the RUU should restore your phone to the state you need.
Good luck with that.

Maybe you did. But it's not the end of the world, even if some useless "HTC Locations" don't come back yet, you will find that, eventually
Try with an RUU as I said, and then you will see if more stuff is missing. This is the closest to the "Out Of Box experience" there is, anyway.. or so I think.
dont know whats RUU or what sould i do from now with the link
sorry, need help - im new to this

[Q] A few questions about my new ICS rom

So I just put on ICSSGS and im trying really hard to resist the urge to have sex with my phone. I don't think i've ever gone WOW to any rom that i've loaded. I literally said wow about 3 or 4 times when playing around with it. anyhow moving on...
I wanted to know what you guys think is the best way to remove old folders that get trapped in my file explorer. I wiped everything like the installation methods say but i'm left with a bunch of folders from old apps with actual files in them that i'm afraid to just say delete all..why isn't my phone fresh? theres a lot of stuff stuck on my internal sd card.
secondly, what is the best way to get your facebook friends pictures into the people app? should i suck it up with the facebook for android app which is garbage, friendcaster? or haxsync?
Dunno about the book of faces thing...
but all of the stuff on your sdcard should be intact, that's normal, the instructions had you wipe, then flash ROM from sdcard, if that wipe erased the sdcard the ROM you were about to flash (not to mention any thing else you wanna keep) would've been gone..that wouldn't have gone too well.
Fastest way to just wipe the whole sdcard would just be to boot into recovery, go to mounts and storage, and format sdcard. That will erase everything. So make a copy of all of it somewhere aha move back the stuff you wanna keep.
wows
I also had my wows when couldn't find speed dial in ICS...

you need a ext4 partition on your sd card and an app which enables you moving apps to sd like "link2sd", "s2e" or similar. And you need to root your phone.
Look a bit around in the ace section here on xda and youll find everything you need

you must create ext3 or ext4 primary partition on your sdcard. to create partition, install mini tool partition wizard to your pc. then you can use link2sd to link dalvik caches to your sdcard. or, if you use cm7 as your rom, you can install s2e. to remove system apps, use link2sd

Thanks alot guys

Are you linking the apk, dex and lib files or just installing (moving) apps to sd? You should create link to free up your internal space.
Take it from my experience. I used stocklite for almost 5 months with link2sd. Linked all apps except for those with widgets or that i needed at boot left on internal. 80 apps, 50 mb free on internal.
If you change to cyanogenmod you won't have more internal space, same space, different rom. When you do the required wipes with cwm (which you should to install cyano roms) it will format and erase the partition. You'll still have your partitioned sd card, but all info in that partition will be gone.

I installed Cyno Mod 7 ROM and it works just fine and i have partitioned again and everything is fine now..but i backuped my stocklite and i dont have the original ROM which i used even before rooting how to get that 'the real one which i had when i bought the phone?' if i have that one ..i can change it to anytime when i want..
Carrier specific roms are harder to find than free roms. Go to sammobile and check if they have the rom that came with your phone.
The stock roms are all installed through your computer with odin and your phone in download mode.
