Necessary to recalibrate after rom flash? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So yesterday I calibrated my battery and was suprised it actually worked. But today I flashed a new rom (for like the 6th time this week, I think I have a problem) Should I calibrate again?

I /think/ it's only when you flash a rom without a fully charged battery.

Well if you have tons of time I don't see why not. Most of the time, I feel that it is not necessary to calibrate the battery. I only do it when there is a severe battery drain.

+1 to this. Please ensure u flash a ROM after u charge the battery to 100%.

I've been looking but have yet to find directions on how to calibrate a battery. Can some one please tell me the ways to do this?

Charge the phone till 100% while it is turned on, disconnect the cable.
Turn it off and charge it till it's 100%, disconnect cable.
Turn it on and off, charge till it's 100% and disconnect the cable.
Now, delete battery stats using CWM or run the following command using ADB or Terminal Emulator:
Code:
su
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin

Sorry but what is cwm?

Can I flash with 60 percent battery?

Can I flash a new ROM with 60 percent battery? I see where most ROM'S recommend flashing with a full battery. Does this affect anything like how much charge the phone thinks the battery has? Or are there other reasons to flash with a full battery?

It doesn't matter. I flashed at 5% once. The only thing you have to do is recalibrate your battery after.

That would be a big problem
I tend to always flash at 100%. Just to avoid any issues. But you can flash at 60% if you really wanted to. Just do a calibration
Do it with full battery . Calibrating takes ages

If you are using odin, by definition the phone is plugged in to a USB power source. I suspect you couldn't drain the battery in that circumstance - maybe if you were plugged in, playing a video while serving up Mobile AP. But not when the screen is doing nothing but saying it's in download mode.
I have flashed through cwm with under 50%

That's assuming every one uses odin
I just clear data and cache and flash the new rom. But I charge up to 100% so the battery reads fine.

Yeah thats why I said "somehow". I thought about your point while posting though and it makes plenty of sense and im pretty sure you can charge a phone no matter what state it is in (soft brick, hard brick, waterlogged ha)

Yea
I've flashed in the range of 50 - 100%, never had a problem
like others said you just have to recalibrate your battery after.
I probably wouldn't go less than 50% though just to be safe.
It would probably be best to flash on a full battery, but I don't think its necessary. Just recalibrate and wipe battery stats and you should be fine.
Yes you can. May need to calibrate

Flashing at full battery?

Hi everybody,
I've read somewhere that it's preferable that the battery be fully charged before to flash. Does it the job if I flash with the charger connected or do I have to wait until it's fully charged before to flash?
Thx.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
its advisable that the battery is beforehand >60%...
I have flashed numerous times while on charge, tho I would imagine its preferable to take it off charge, what you do need is at least 3800mV in the battery
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
does not make a difference if its on or off charge, the battery been full when flashing is just for minimizing risk of bricking your device,if your device goes dead during flashing im afraid its game over,
hit t****s
I asked this question because I have read that battery statistics get wrong when the device is not fully charged before to flash.

Battery stats always get thrown a bit and being fully charged does help avoids this, but a few full charge cycles is all you need to reset/recalibrate
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
i flash numberous of time when my battery > 30%
no problem till now.
but it is advise to flash with full battery for your phone safely.
Thank you for your answer.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
flashing a rom the battery need to be full so you don't need to recalibrate your battery after the flash, but if you need only to flash kernel it no need to be full.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
it is just an safety net , when your batt is low , you are flashing an kernel , wile flashing the kernel the batt dies out , you can get in sirius truble.
that cannot happen when your batt is full , so just an safety net
Thx

How to calibrate battery?

Thanks

Another thing you could do is if the phone has CWM on it you can wipe battery stats from there. Just have the phone at 100% then let it die completely and charge back to full charge without interrupting the charge cycle.
i have the charge and this is what i use im not sure if it will help the revo but i dont see why not, its nothing phone specific as long as you can get to recovery
almost forgot to cover my butt. i didnt make this or come up with it. just use it to make my day last longer lol. hope it helps

Copying battery stats file?

Would it work to just copy the battery stats file to another rom so u don't have to re calibrate everytime u install one or would that be a bad idea

You don't need to calibrate, just charge it full. Battery stats are automatically wiped when you unplug with a full charge.

Well the new 3500 milliamp battery I got says to fully discharge and charge 4-5 times to get the most out of ur battery. Or is that just for when u first get it

Just when you first get it. Its a "break in" for batteries.

Although I believe that its good to do a full discharge and charge every so often.

Alright that's what I thought. Although while discharging my phone froze up and rebooted so I think ill have to recalibrate again lol

It shouldn't affect battery. I've tested it myself, battery life before and after calibration is no different. This calibration myth was debunked by a google framework engineer.
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
ya I read a short thing on that. Kinda odd though. Seems like sometimes u could get a worse battery life some days compared to others. But it also seems like a good idea since u don't have to calibrate every time u do something.

The calibration has nothing to do with the battery life, it just gives a more "exact" reading of the battery level.. I miscalibrated my battery once, and it was at 1% for about 3 hours, then finally died..

Ya that happened to me once. Now I just make a point of being able to fully charge anytime I flash a rom.

I have now been convinced that there is no reason to calibrate your battery at anytime. Google engineer pretty much put it to rest and since then I have flashed repeatedly and all that changes is the ROM , sometimes battery is bad and other times its great. CM9 is best so far. Until we get new kernals our battery won't ever be great.

Ya reading through the comments it seems batterystats.bin has nothing to do with the displayed battery level, but rather just what is using the battery. The displayed battery level comes from kernel level

Same, although not for 3 hours but 15min heavy load (720p mkv). Which normally kills 10% battery.
After calibrate it never happened again and died right after 1%

Battery drain while charging after new rom install

I recently installed the latest version of Paranoid Android running Jelly Bean 4.2. Since then I've not been able to charge from usb or car charger. Charging from the wall socket works but is SLOW.
I'm stumped as to what the problem is, Google and the paranoid android thread haven't helped so I really am at a loss.
Any help would be great. Thanks guys.

The simplest way to do is power off you GN. Plug it into a power supply for recharge. When the level reaches to 100%, unplug and get out the battery. Wait for 5 minutes before put back the battery into the GN. Then restart it.
Otherwise get an appli like Battery Calibration, recharge the battery until 100%, the start the appli to calibrate it.

But that sounds like I calibrating the battery itself. I use multiple batteries with my GN. Would it have an effect or am I doing something within the phone itself? Because both batteries drain while charging.
Also if I should do this then should I keep the charger plugged into the GN while I've taken the battery out?

No,unplug the charger.
I also have 2 batteries. Often, but not always, after a new ROM flash, battery recharge takes long time when the GN is On.
In such case I have make calibration for all my batteries. For each new ROM, calibration once for each battery is sufficient.
