I have SQLite Editor on my NC & am trying to follow Nookdev instructions for setting it up to install non market apps. When I run SQLite I get a notice that it has been granted superuser permissions. Obviously I don't know how to use SQLite Editor & need to find some instructions. I purchased it from Speed Software, but don't see any instructions on their site. Any help?
Thanks,
kev

So those douches over at Telcel removed these apps. How to add them?
This is what *I* did, and I'm a total noob so I don't pretend to say this is the *best* way to do it. If you find a better way, by all means, post it here.
Anyway, what you need:
1. Root your phone. Tons of ways to do it, search forums for it.
2. Root explorer. Payed app, worth it. You need Mastercard or VISA in order to buy it, AMEX won't work.
3. Market enabler, pull it from market
4. The apps APK's. I'm attaching gmail related apk's. For gtalk you can extract them from any 2.1 firmware (i'll post a quick guide for this below).
Steps for Google voice search:
1. Start market enabler. Activate [au] Telstra - this is not permanent and harmless
2. Open market and look for Google Voice Search and install it.
3. You're done!
4. Optional: Dump that stupid "Portal Ideas" icon they put for the browser and download Dolphin Browser instead.
Note: The widget will still say "Yahoo" but it will default to Google search. Fortunately for us, Telcel is pretty sloppy and they actually never removed the google search apk's (except voice search)
Steps for Gmail
1. Put the Gmail.apk and GmailProvider.apk somewhere in your SDCard or external SD
2. Using Root Explorer copy these to /system/apps
3. Reboot. If you forget to reboot you'll get a bunch of force closes and other errors. These are harmless, but once you reboot they'll go away.
I imagine that for Gtalk it would be the same steps as with Gmail.
Quick guide to extract apk's from any firmware
What you need:
Linux or a virtual machine running Linux (virtualbox from oracle is free and good, + Ubuntu)
A 2.1 firmware file. Don't use a 2.2 i have no idea what would happen
1. Get the firmware .tar opened with WinRAR or 7-Zip or whatever.
2. Navigate within the .tar until you see "factoryrfs.rfs" copy that over to your HDD
3. From your Linux system (VM or otherwise) mount the rfs using the instructions here:
http://z4ziggy.wordpress.com/2010/09/17/mounting-the-rfs/
Once mounted go to the system/app dir and get whatever apk you want from there.
Hope this helps.
some apps (aldiko and is suppose superuser) need to access db files to operate correctly. is there any way to install sqlite or is this something we need to add into a custom rom?
You stated that this is required for Aldiko. If this application is installed on the NC, will that solve the problem with Aldiko remembering the chapter that was being read, but not the page?
Isn't it already installed?
I thought i remember reading that one of the fixes for installing apps was to pull a sqlite db, run a script to set a new value to allow apps and then push it back.

Have you tried sqlite editor? It is a paid app on the market... I got to it by trying to open a DB file from root explorer when Modding for installing apps from SD.

All,
Following the non-ADB instructions to Enable App install from on-device installers (http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Enable_App_install_from_on-device_installers), I downloaded SQLite Editor - and it force closes on me.
This is a auto-nooter'd 1.0.1 NC.
Any ideas?
Regards,
George
I get the exact same behavior. I uninstalled and reinstalled...same thing. I am also running auto nooter for 1.0.1
help
I couldn't get sqlite to work either. I used the abd instructions, they didn't work either. But Did get it to work by sending the pull settings.db command (minus the $) editing settings.db with a hex editor on my pc(searched for install non market apps, changed 0 to 1') then used the push settings.db command.

I have rooted with the update.zip. installed android sdk and now trying to enable captivate app sideloading, but I cant' seem to locate busybox after i installed it. I used "Buysbox installer" and click in install and states buys box has been installed, but i can't locate it anywhere on my phone to start it up to continue with the enabling app sideloading. I am lost on what to do from this point, any help would be awesome. Thanks!
When I enabled sideloading I logged into to my phone through adb copied the system DB, used SQLite extension in firefox to switch the bit, and then pushed the DB back on the phone. Restart and done.
What method are you trying to use to enable sideloading apps? All busybox did for me was allow things like su, copy, etc in the shell through adb.

I was trying to follow these instructions.

How did you do this? Do you have step by step instructions on how you did what you did?
Thanks!
Thought you should be able to download busybox by itself from the market - or you could install Titanium Backup which will install it for you.
if busy box installer says its installed, then its installed. there is no 'app' for busybox. its in the system. that website is slightly misleading. i think they mean the busybox INSTALLER. open it and run the install/enable it. as already suggested, if you install titanium backup, it will check that busybox is installed and working properly

actually there is an APP icon for busybox that will show up in app drawer. If you want to make sure its installed just download it from the market...open the app and run the install...takes all of about 30-40 seconds.
I just ended up downloading root explorer and firefox SQLite manager and just copied the settings.db over to my sd card and changed the settings from 0 to one on the install none market apps, then copied it back the com.android.providers.settings and i am enabled now. awesome thanks!

Sorry I didn't get back to your post. Glad you got it to work. Good luck with the non-market apps.
Been using a rooted NC for a while and love it.
One of my problems was that I couldnt get certain apps from the Android Market, like Evernote and Yelp. Not sure of the reason.
Anyway, I've found that by using the Amazon App store, I've been able to download and install some apps that I couldn't find previously through Android Market.
Just wanted to let people know that Amazon's a great addition to the rooted NC.
Amazon appstore
I haven't been able to install the Amazon AppStore app....keep getting a FILE UNSUPPORTED error.
Nook Color 1.1 rooted.
Did you allow non-market apps?
Yes, I have allowed non-market apps. You have to download the apk file directly from amazon, but then when i try to install it from the device it says that installing apk files is not allowed. Can someone tell me the easiest way to install an apk file to rooted 1.1?
EDIT - nvm By going into NookColorTools, checking and unchecking Allow Non-Market Apps, I was able to install the Amazon Appstore with Apps Installer.
well, amazon app store is nice thing however as i understand works only in US. so its quite limited

I would also like to know.
Had the same issue. Here is what I found that works.

The relevant portion is under Activity 4:
Activity 4: Install apk packages directly from the Nook Color
If you get Install blocked and Installation of download apks is not supported messages when you try to install an apk package directly from your Nook Color, you’ll need to perform the following steps to enable it
1. Download SQLLite 3.7.4 or later and install it under the Android SDK \ Tools folder. From the SQl Lite page you can download sqllite-shell-win32-x86-3070400.zip. Inside there is a sqllite3.exe that has to go in the Tools folder inside your Android SDK installation.
2. Open a command line windows (Activity 2, Step 4) and type the following commands: (replace android-sdk-windows with your path to where Android SDK is stored on your computer. The main ideea is to get to the tools folder where you have both adb.exe and sqllite3.exe)
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>sqlite3 settings.db
sqlite> update secure set value=1 where name='install_non_market_apps';
sqlite> .q
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
I downloaded and used ADB Wireless from the market, which is easier than getting ADB working through USB.
