There is a really simple Email client app that seems to have appeared after rooting. How would one go about using Google Contacts to launch an email with this little app, all pre-addressed to the contact and ready to go?
When I attempted to let the Barnes and Nobles "Contacts" app sync with Google Contacts, it seems to have wanted to give B&N more access to my contacts that I would like. It also doesn't really look like B&N's contacts app really wants to play with anything else.
Unfortunately, what you are looking for is not working on the NC as of this writing. The only contacts, of any kind that can be sync'd over (and not using a 3rd party solution like Moxier or Touchdown) are gmail contacts. And those contacts just get dumped into the NC's contact apps, which is quite useless as the contacts just sit there. There is no way to pull a contact into into any email program, even gmail.
I see. Obviously everyone is pushing for all of us to use THEIR web-based services. I'm a bit surprised there isn't an independent address book app out there that can both sync with Google Contacts, and be capable of launching the default on-board email client with the recipient selected from the sync'd contacts.

I was wondering if there was a better way to manage my contacts on both the Google contacts and my Exchange contacts?
I have Touchdown for Android and it works beautifully on my mail and calendar. But the contact syncing never seemed to line up right. There were often duplicates, missing fields (such as birthdays and addresses), and it just feels clumsy.
For now I have just been keeping my Google ontacts updated and manually entering the new info in Outlook when I feel like it. Is there a better way?
Well, I haven't seen anyone successfully replace the NC contacts app with the generic Android one, but I found something almost as good ... if you're willing to pay.
If you download Touchdown for Exchange from the market (demo version, have to pay to use it for more than 30 days), you can set up your gmail address as an exchange account (login is the full e-mail address, server is m.google.com). It'll sync contacts w/the Exchange server ... and by default, sync those with your "phone's' contact list.
I've tried it, and confirmed autocomplete for contacts now works in gmail.
Some caveats:
* While Touchdown can handle more than one exchange account, it does so with "profiles." You switch between them -- and when you're in one profile, you'll only have access to the contacts from that one. I've got my phone set up with both my personal gmail and my office's google apps account ... so now I'm using Soocial to sync their contacts (non-ideal), and having touchdown just bring down the office stuff.
* You'll want to tweak your e-mail settings to minimize how much data you're having the device get. No need to pull down your inbox again if gmail already is. I have it set not to get message bodies, to sync the minimum amount of days, etc.
* It's a paid app, so you'll have to pony up the cash. And although I'd previously purchased a license key via the market on my phone, I'm not seeing the option for the license key (protected app unsupported by the current market hack?) showing up in the market for my NC. You can also enter a license key, but I'll be trying copying over my valid key from my phone and seeing what happens ...
Nice:
* It handles the calendar well as well ... so no need to bring in the Calendar.apk or CorpCalendar.apk if you don't want to.
Soocial non-ideal
Hi Wordsmith,
Just a quick question why you find Soocial to be non-ideal? I'm part of the Soocial team and we try to listen as much as we can to our users or potential users. Sounds like you are looking for a one stop place to have your address book synced. In what area do you find Soocial lacking now for it to be non-ideal.
Thanks for trying and using Soocial. ;-)

I juist wasn't really looking to have these address books synced in the first place, but I AM looking to access both from my NC, as I do from my Android phone. Since I didn't have a great solution to that, I'm using your product to include all my contacts in both of my address books.
I've used touchdown for about a year now and it's never let me down. Best exchange program hands down. Thanks for the tip to use it to sync Google contacts!
FYI: you can sync only contacts if you choose and the server is m.google.com w/ssl in case anyone needs it.
Has anyone been able to add their facebook account by going to settings-accounts-facebook?
I installed the facebook app off the market, but when i went under settings it didn't give me the option to sync friends to contacts like it did on my droid.
So went to accounts, add facebook, entered my email, and password, but it wouldn't sign in
Kept giving me a server error, then about every third time it gives an error that says that something is wrong with the device clock and to contact the administrator.
Tried uninstalling the app to see if it was causing problems, but no luck. Anyone been able to sync facebook friends with contacts (its
mainly to get contact pics off facebook)
Thanks
Edit: Finally got it to work. Only took over a week
When you install Facebook, under the "My Accounts" app, you'll see two entries for Facebook. One is actually for your Facebook app, and one is for Moto's "Social Networking" app. Using the Moto-branded version may offer you additional features.
I've noticed a couple places where you get shafted by Moto software for not using their built-ins. Like the Car Dock front page only links to the Moto Music Player... which has no music because I stream from Google Music.
I believe since OS 2.3 (Gingerbread), the facebook sync with accounts option has been removed from Android.
Easy method, download (free) SyncMyPix from the Market, it will sync facebook pics with matching accounts on your phone into your actual Google Contacts.
I run it once and don't let it do it automatically, just run it whenever I add new contacts.
The sync facebook accounts worked fine on my original droid, its running cyangenmod 7 2.3.3. Thats why it was driving me nuts, could just set the sync settings from the facebook app. Figured it was some moto thing, but didn't know if it was specific to my phone or not.
Thanks

Thanks for the SyncMyPix suggestion!
Looks like the facebook app has removed the settings for syncing contacts. Tried using the Verizon "MyAccounts" app but definitely a little screwy.
fb contacts synced with no problems for me. I used the "social networking" app in the app drawer and entered in my fb info. contacts now have either gmail or fb photo as their contact photo.
I used one of the two in the My Accounts app, contacts synced just fine.
I don't love that when you sync with face book your gallery becomes less about you, and turns into a fb gallery...wish you could turn only that feature off...

I am considering buying Galaxy Note, but there is one issue I haven't been able to clear so far:
How compatible are the GN calendar (s-planner), memo (s-memo) and contacts with Outlook and Google calendar? Can I synchronize between GN and Outlook calendar and contacts? Are the s-memo notes transferred to PC and if so, can they be exported to any other format (Outlook memo? MS Onenote? Evernote? ASCII text? Graphics?)
I have already had Palm PDAs (with the Palm Desktop on PC), then WinMobile devices (with Outlook) and got quite used to the comfort of being able to view and edit contacts, schedules and memos on both PC and the mobile device. If GN doesn't allow this, this would be a serious downside for me.
Everything is synced with Google. If your Outlook syncs with google then it shouldnt be a problem with the calander and contacts. You can add s-memos to calander events, but if you dont do that, then you have to manually sync s-memo things to Google Docs. But other than that its completely autonomous. There are also a lot of apps that do what you want. I would recommend buying a Note.
syncs fine with hotmail, exchange, google and facebook.
I initially had an odd scenario where hotmail gained some facebook calendar events (birthdays) but that seems to have resolved itself.
Thank you for the answer.
It has been written somewhere that the latest version of S-Memo can also synchronize with Evernote. Can anyone confirm that? And if so, does it just send the content as an image or does it retain some more formatting (text? www links? etc.)

sync works with evernote but it send the notes as images.
I am a sync-o-phile (oo-er, sounds a bit rude), always have been.
I now have my calendar and contacts synced with Google & Outlook using and App called Sync2 from www.sync2.com. It seems to work fine, although can fail when outlook is closed and it is still alive (I close Outlook to sleep my PC or Outlook can crash). I sync it and several other web calendars at the same time.
I also have my Outlook to do list sync to ToodleDo, and then to Due Today both on my PC and my phone. It uses Outlook categories as Project names, which is neat. I have not tried linking with the Notes To Do list as this seems peculiar to the Note, and I want a more general solution.
I like that Google/Samsung now seems to carry over Outlook categories for contacts in the Note. That means I can use them properly.
I use Evernote to sync all my notes as it is far more powerful than the Google notes thing, and more generic. I also love the ability to open a file, edit it, and save again, and it updates the note.
I use Basecamp on my PC, phone, and the web for managing projects and collaborating with customers.
For files I use SugarSync, and it syncs with up to 3 devices, up to 2GB for free, and I typically just ignore it an expect my files to be wherever I am.
Odd thing is that I have noticed several contacts getting images from other sources I never asked to look up. I presume Facebook. This is bloody annoying. Does anyone know how to stop it?

This is quite possible. I have also noticed the same behaviour on my WinMobile phone (HTC Touch Pro2), so it is not directly an Android related issue. And yes, the images for my contacts that appeared suddenly without my consent, are the same as their Facebook profile images.
Got a Note!
You've managed to give me the information I needed and finally I bought a Note!
So far I have been able to confirm:
Synchronizing Smemo with Google Docs - works great, text remains text, while images are embeded in the document
Exporting contacts from Outlook to KIES worked "sort of", while exporting to Gmail and back to Note worked great. I have managed to retain all the information and even code page (I used ASCII, not Unicode) worked as expected.
Exporting calendar from Outlook to Gmail and back to Note worked almost perfectly (apart from some inconsistencies which were due to duplicate entries in Outlook)
As for contact photos, it seems that only those which originate from Facebook are added to contact data.

I got all my contact photos from way back, and those must have come through from Outlook -> Google -> Note as Outlook is the only constant source since I was first able to do this (with my Sony Clie)
Perhaps in my case Outlook photos would also have been added through Google, but I exported/imported them via a .csv file, which didn't retain photos, only text data.
My outlook contact photos sync perfectly.

This has been driving my crazy since I got the phone, and I thought it was a combination having multiple email accounts set up (gmail, @Live, @aol, @corporate, etc.). However, I've cleaned out my contacts from my non-Gmail list, and still have this issue.
The issue being:
I have my Gmail synced from all-time, so from 2008 or whatever it was. When I compose an email in any of apps (Outlook, AOL, Exchange, Gmail, etc.), ANYONE who I've ever emailed with on my Gmail account will pop up as a contact. So if I begin to type my friend's name in "Michael", rather than having 3 Michaels pop up, I have about 50 "Mi..."s pop up.
Anyone have any clue how I can remedy this so that only the 150 people or so I have as actual contacts will popup instead?
Thanks!
Anyone? I hope the solution isn't "root"!
If you go into your contacts, bring up your menu click contacts to display. go to customize and uncheck "all other contacts". If I have it checked under my Gmail accounts I have 1484 contacts, Everyone I have ever sent/got an email too/from, Craigslist addresses, mailing lists, spammers, etc. unchecked I have 160. I could be mistaken but I vaguely remember an option on the gmail webmail client settings (years ago) to add anyone you talked to into your contact list. On my old note 2 there was an option to only display contacts with phone numbers but I can't find a similar option on the turbo though so you may still have a few unwanted ones if you have email only contacts.
Seemed to have worked, thanks! Now working on getting my Exchange to remove some unwanted contacts, but this was huge!!!
Thanks!!!
No sweat, glad it helped!
