has anyone as of yet got a VPN service such as alwaysVPN working on the NC yet?? I was thinking it would be a useful feature for those NC owners outside the US for accessing the B&N store
I am pretty sure we need a modified kernel before we can do vpn connections. At least that is what had to happen with my phone first (Moment)

NO TETHERING
NO NAVIGATING
I really like/dislike my Samsung Vibrant. My HD2 was stolen and got the Vibrant on a temporary basis until the HD7 came out. Love the market place, hate the phone and the android service or whatever I had to switch my internet plan over to.
I cant stand roaming data charges. $30 a megabyte. Im pretty sure I wont get that with the HD7. Im a truck driver so I need tethering and navigating.
Is it possible for a tethering app in the future or is it a hardware thing?
It seems to be possible on the samsung phones, so it is possible. Cant say if itll happen on the hd7, but id bet its a matter of time before someone finds a way.

they also got a lg wp7 phone to tether.
That will happen. As far as gps goes, bing navigation is supposed to be in the jan. 11 update.
ok, so thanks to all the brilliance here i'm fully rooted and loving life EXCEPT i still can't tether to my iphone with mywi. it is set to default simply broadcasting its little wifi heart out. as far as i know mywi creates a hotstop not an adhoc connection, anyone else have this issue?
answer
I saw that the question had many views but no responses, so i'll go ahead and share what i've found. First, as stated some where else in another thread the tablet doesn't accept adhoc connections. Sadly, i looked everywhere online and apparently there aren't any jailbroken iphone apps that support infrastructure mode wifi.
I did however find a site that claims to open android tablets to adhoc connections, does anyone know if this is possible?
Thanks,
Mark

A friend who just bought a NC last night is also having the same issue. according to the research he did there are no wifi tethering applications that broadcast in infrastructure mode, they are all adhoc, including mywi.
There appear to be methods involving editing some files and statically entering your SSID info and whatnot. I'll look into it further tonight after work and get back with you.
It's an Android shortcoming. There's a fix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961 but unsure if it'll work with our NC since we don't have a ROM dump yet. If this doesn't work worst case scenario we lose WiFi. And the dump is needed to restore the replaced file mentioned in the posted thread, otherwise a hard reset of the NC would be necessary.
I bought the Nook Color while visiting Boston few weeks ago and activated it in some random Apple store (free wifi!)
Now I'm wondering, if I ever need to activate it again while not in the US, are there any workarounds? or can it be activated from anywhere?
I activated mine from Hong Kong, no issues. afaik you don't have to be in the USA to activate it, the only thing about the NC is that you have to be in the States to buy books from B&N (and that is only IP-wise too) and go on Pandora.

Ok good to know
One more question, when I load my own epubs to the nook, they show up in all the right places except for the home screen, there are only the b&n books, any way to get my own epubs there?
Activated in Spain with no problems. The only issue is you can't buy anything out of USA.
Yeah it works. I still hope someone here finds a way to circumvent the activation / registration process. Nobody knows how much the nook is phoning home to B&N.
Also, some versions of the classic nook firmware forced registration like the nc, and B&N filtered non US IP addressss...
Their TOS allow them to disable your device by deactivating your account. So if our NOOKs for instance send back lists of installed apps, B&N would know that we rooted (went against their TOS) and could deregister our device ... yeah, all this might not be a big deal since accounts can be easily created again, but that again might change.
that's a great news, I order my NC today, but I live in france.
Is there a way to root before registering?
Yeah, I believe for our rooting method it doesn't matter when we do it.
Now, even if you are rooted you'd have to know which files to change so that the registration Wizard doesn't come up. Maybe you could just kill the process of the wizard via adb, but you might have to do this at every boot and maybe the wizard is part of some larger app, like the DeviceManager.apk that has to run in the background all the time.
You can test and unregister, then register again via the menus. So maybe analyzing the data partition's differences in between could help us find the important files.
On a registered device I already tested deleting /data/system/accounts.db, which caused my name etc. to disappear from he device info. Still the wizard did not come up again, and I believe there must be another place where the nook saves a account ID or at least a bit that says, "wizard is finished". I also tried to delete the data directory for the device manager. This simply caused a notification to appear at reboot, that my device has been updated. (Of course it hasn't been updated). Still no wizard to be seen and root was left untouched.
Hi
My Nook is rooted and is great. However I'm needing to deregister it so the new owner can use it.
Whats the best way to do this? I'm not 100% sure I actually have the B&N password as I'll never order from them being in the UK.

I'm running Hash's ICS on my D3, and can't seem to do anything with any VPN connections. On MavROM 3.5, I was able to make un-encrypted PPTP connections, because for some reason, MPPE support is missing in the Kernel. I know what an absolute pain in the neck getting a PPTP server up and working on Linux can be, so I can't imagine what a pain getting it running on Android is like.
Has anyone been able to make any kind of VPN connection on their D3 with a CM9 based ROM? I have yet to hit my logs, and start capturing packets, but before I did, I wanted to see if its even possible, since having a locked bootloader makes things a little tougher..
Anyone have anything for this? 3rd party options? This is one area where the iPhone just works, and I have had a hell of a time getting various Android flavors connected to our VPN. Either PPTP or L2TP. It's just not as easy as an iPhone or iPad.
This is certainly been a decision factor for Tablet provisioning for our sales guys. One guy did buy his own Android tablet, and just can't get the VPN working, where all of our iPad's work without modification.
I hear crickets chirping...
I've been searching for months.. I have found no viable fix for VPN on either CM7 or CM9, and from what I've found it's an upstream issue in Android itself. Only solutions I've found connect to other service providers to provide anonymity. i have not tried paid solutions.
Not sure if this is an option, but OpenVPN works flawlessly. Unless you strictly require a PPTP/L2TP solution, try it out. I've got an OpenVPN server running on my router at home so I can connect from my phone at any time and have quasi-LAN access to my home network, comes in really handy. Not to mention it's a billion times more configurable than either of the built-in (and outdated) VPN types.
Android has never been known for its VPN compatibility, surprisingly enough. You'd think it would be a major focal point in terms of customer requirements, but I guess it's sort of slipped through the cracks.
Nevertheless, try searching the Market (or Play, whatever they've called it now) for OpenVPN Installer and OpenVPN Settings, the first app does what you'd think and the second is where you initialize and configure your connections.
I dont know the problem but i cant get vpn working properly with my note. First my vpn settings are right also i know the vpn is working as i use it with pc. i tried it pptp and ipsec as my vpn supports both. the problem is: i can connect without any problem and it stays connected but can get internet access. can anybody help. if it differs i am on LA3 rom with CF kernel
What kind of VPN are you trying yo establish?
Having a rooted one, the best choice is, at least for me, OpenVPN: I could be helpish in this case. But on IPSec ones I can't say much... They didn't just work for me, not even with HTC desire.
have openvpn option too but need to pay extra money for it so i keep it as my last choice. and one weird thing is i know i used these vpn connections before without any issues but dont know when they got broken so cant keep the track of the problem
Do you mean you subscribed an external vpn service such as the one offered by http://www.securitykiss.com/ ?
yes, but actually i didnt signed giganews gave me free pptp and ipsec but they want extra fee for openvpn. i dont need it much on phone just for buying electronic contents such as mp3 and ebooks.
