Just wondering if there is an app out there that will allow me to connect to youtube or pandora cause my work's wifi blocks the use of these apps. I currently work at The Home Depot on the freight team and we are allowed to listen to music after the store closes as we put away new freight.
Home Depot is now putting wifi into all of their stores but the downside is apps like youtube and pandora are blocked and also their websites are blocked so we cannot access them.
Just need an app that will connect me to a proxy or someway get around these blocks while on wifi.
depends on how it's blocked, if it is blocking the IP itself, then you will have to proxy or something, and it it's just blocking by DNS, all you need is a manual hosts entry.
Google has free DNS servers u can use.

If your phone is rooted you can probably use tor to get around it.
why not just use 3G?

i thought about that but it doesnt seem to happen that much when you are in love with this phone lol
You can try using orbot. itll run your phone through the TOr network which has always been good and worked well with my schools wifi! you need to be on 2.1 though, i hear there are isssues with 2.2

You can use the advanced settings on your wifi connection to enter your proxy of choice. You could set up your own proxy at home using several scripts and what not found across the web.
I would link you to some, but as an IT Consultant, I hate when people try to circumvent my settings to keep all the users safe, even if it's something that won't cause problems and in this case most likely they do it as they have low amounts of bandwith and 2 or more people streaming youtube music or pandora could bring the network to a halt for other users.

Has anyone tried this app for tethering their data connection? It's $6.99 and I don't feel like paying for it if it isn't going to work.
I've not tried TetherBlue yet.
I have tried EasyTether ($9.99) and PDANet (I think $23).
Both are free as long as you don't access HTTPS secured web sites.
Most email services require HTTPS.
If you need access to secured sites, you will most likely need to pay for something.
Good luck!
I'm using Linux so I'm searching for an alternative.
I don't know how much of a hassle it is(I've have yet to buy an app), but you are supposed to be able to get a refund within 24 hours for any app you don't want. Just wanted to make sure you knew.

I wish this one worked
I have used http://code.google.com/p/proxoid/ on windows 7 and linux.
Its nice and free, but I have only used it as a proxy for firefox to go through, so it only really offers web browsing, but i did not get charged for any tethering.
Ok so I wasn't sure if this goes in general, qa, or dev, but I figured this would be the most likely spot for an answer.
I have a home server set up & will shortly have a VPN running. Now my main question is this: I know the phone has the ability to connect to the vpn, but is there a way to stream music/movies to the phone? I having to hand pick each song I want to put on, so being able to access my collection remotely would be very nice.
Thanks!

This has nothing to do with development.
You didn't mention what OS you are running at home so all we can do is guess.
But FTP, Samba, DLNA - depends if you want to copy of stream and how much battery you want to suck down. Since you have a DLNA client - that would probably be the way to go if you want to stream music. or you could get a 32GB card and carry a lot with you.
If my first post didn't make me seem like a complete fool this one should make up for it. As far as I'm aware allshare only works via wifi, my goal is to stream via 3g. Using wifi tether on my captivate & setting up vpn allows me to stream to my ipad, but my goal is to stream over 3g to my phone.

When I say this I may be wrong and come off as stupid as you think you seem, but I can't imagine how that could be possible... And unless you have unlimited data (they didn't grandfather mine), that would sure eat up your 2gb pretty fast.
Really, I can see how it's possible, but not how it's easily done. Access web server from phone; apache maybe?
streaming to phone solution
Easiest solution so far is orb.com, but I personally would prefer a solution that worked on my LAN and just allowed use of samba services instead of using an outside service. Coreplayer was great on windows mobile.
Yea, I would love to do the same thing. I have over 100GB of music on my home server and have unlimited data. I hate having to pick out the music to put on my phone only to inevitably want to listen to something I didn't happen to pick.
I think it would be possible but I don't know if there are any applications that would allow you to do it.
Subsonic
Nice! Subsonic looks great. And it runs on multiple systems since I don't run Windows for my server.
Thanks AJerman
What is the best VPN? I would prefer free but willing to pay.
Will be using this on OS X at school because a simple https proxy won't work.
Should I make my own using my internet at home or can I use my web server to do what I need?
try hotspotshield
I use OpenVPN. Easy to deploy (especially if you are running a VM) and some ROMs have OpenVPN connections native (i.e. Cyanogen).
vpn service
I am using ( purevpn.com ) service for almost a year now and have found no problems whatsoever.
I used SwitchVPN, they had Open VPN for only 7.95$ a month, so it's a great deal. Fast, no problems, and not laggy in games.
Hi...Nice topic going on...Well there are numerous VPN Provider with different packages.
So what dont you visit to bestvpnservice.com
This is a VPN Review site and you can get the best and as well as the cheapest VPN after getting detailed review...
I want to know how access the facebook site from our office. the management block it. its really important to me. thanks
The best way would be to use a web browser on a USB stick, like Portable Firefox.
You'd need to run a proxy from some other location, like your home internet connection, and set the proxy options in that browser. With this, the traffic will be going between the two machines, and only going to Facebook after it's out of the office network.
If you're super-paranoid, you might want to use SSH tunneling to port 8080 on your home machine (so it looks like just web traffic), and run remote access through that tunnel to a machine at home, with Facebook pulled up on the web browser there.
DONT USE A PROXY!
they are managed by random people, entering account details, is risky because they can get them any time!
Moved to Off-Topic.

+1 and also ib4l
Why the fxxk people can't just do the work they are being paid for is beyond me. One of my colleagues spends half his working day on Facebook while I work my bits off for the company - can you guess that it pi$$es me off?
Speak to your management and ask permission to access Facebook.

My school has the Light speed Systems blocking website tool and I would like to know if there is a way to download ROMs or Kernels from media fire or whatever from my School's WiFi ?
Youre going to have to find a proxy site that your school hasnt blocked. Make a list and try some out, cross off any that don't work.
Ahhh I see

or you could persuade the dev to make a mirror at some unknown site
or dropbox. my school doesn't block dropbox because teachers use it too
google drive isn't blocked at most schools too because at my school, lots of people use google docs
Other question: My school's wifi requires you to connect to a proxy to access the internet after connecting to their network
on my home wifi network, I use an app called Orbot(its free don't worry) . its like Tor for the PC, except its for android.
its basically like another transparent proxy that allows me to access any site and download stuff not available in the US
is there anyway I can use orbot, while connected to my school's proxy. because orbot doesn't seem to work for me
it only works at home when im not connected to any proxy
