I checked the nook site, and it does not show support for .mobi files. The majority of my ebook collection is already in that format, and I would hate to have to convert each and every book over to epub, etc.
Does the Nook Color support .mobi files, rooted or not? I did read that someone was able to get the Kindle reader app on the NC, which reads the .mobi files, so I happy with that, but I just want to make sure before I make the purchase.
Thanks! and Happy Holidays!

The NC supports epub ... a rooted NC can install the Kindle app so that would be a route .. a better route might be to use Calibre (free DL) .. this PC app can convert mobi files to epub and can do so in bulk so you needn't do them one by one .. also the Calibre software (runs on your PC) can connect and send files to the NC, so pretty handy.

True, I use Calibre for my EVO to convert books, but I was hoping to avoid even a bulk conversion, only due to the sheer number of books to do so.
I'm not afraid of rooting it, so that may be the best way to go, and this way I can whispersync with my desktop (in theory)

OK, maybe I'm in the wrong place but hopefully someone can help me or direct me to the right place. I have a Samsung Captivate. I downloaded FBreader app so I can read ebooks in epub format. I don't want Kindle and from reviews I read, FBreader is better than Aldiko or Laputa.
#1. Where do I go to buy ebooks (latest booksbest sellers, etc.)?
#2. How do I download them to my PC then transfer to my external SD memory card in my phone? Or/And
#3. How do I download directly from my phone to the SD card and this use the app to read?
Thanks in advance for your help, Fellow Droiders.
p.s. I DO have Kies installed. How/Can I use that for syncing ebooks from PC to phone?
When I first started learning Android, I had to experiment with a few different kinds of ebook readers. I previously had a Tilt that I loaded Incubus' Froyo on, and that was the only thing I ever read books on.
FBreader never really did quite work right for me, I ended up using the free version Wordplayer. It seems to work the fastest, has a lot of nice options, and doesn't screw up the formatting of the text. I read about 20 books on the tilt, and now that I've got a Captivate, I've read six on this device using Wordplayer.
As far as where to buy books, that's a matter of searching Google. I haven't bought any epub books myself, I've just been converting my old .lit ebooks using Calibre.
I never had any luck with FBReader I know it does not get good reviews but I have liked Aldiko that I even purchased the premium version of it. I was getting my books from Barnes and Noble in epub format but the only thing that it would play on without decrypting the files is their Nook software which is fine in its self but my other collection of books that I did not get from Barnes and Noble I import them with Aldiko. One nice thing about the nook software is that you can do it all on your phone and never have to worry about the PC as it will load the book on your phone directly
Hope this helps
I purchased a magazine subscription from the nook store and it wouldn't show in my nook library. I called BN support and they said that it was an ePub file (not a PDF) and it seems like my device doesn't support ePub files. All other nook purchases are showing up in the library. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app with no luck.
Does anyone know how to get ePub support on the device or a way to make this work?
Nook doesn't allow you to download and transfer the file from another device.

On the NOOK app I've noticed Epub files need to be side loaded which basically means manually copying them to the nook directory into my documents. Also, the nook gets a bit retarded at times and will crash anytime you try going into my documents, if this happens you need to go into settings -> applications -> nook and clear data
Not sure I understand what you are asking but Aldiko is a free reader that will do Epub files. It is in the market.

Thanks. I just went back through the order process and saw that it says it is only available on nook color. Probably wouldn't work with a sideload.
Are your tablets rooted or where did you find nook reader?
I installed the nook app and subscribed to a mag and it shows and I was able to open it.

Which title? Customer service said some would/wouldn't work. Some titles will say that they are only available on nook color.

Does anyone know how to sideload the cover art? I have a ton of epubs sideloaded and they work great just can't get the cover art to show.
...just bumping this to see if someone can give more detail on nook magazine subscriptions on the g tab. Almost all titles say that they are exclusive to the nook/nook color. My attempts have not been successful.
Please let me know the titles you have tried and how you got them to work. The step by step would be a useful reference for others considering the g tab as well.
Thanks!
epub files are just easier dealt with in fbreader. Available in market.
Not as flashy as Nook, but much more user-friendly.

I use Readers Hub with Zinio to read magazines. Go to Zinio.com and sign up and purchase subscriptions to the magazines you want and you can read them on your gTab.
Here is where you can get the apk files for these apps.
Force closes with the standard Zinio apk.
Use the fixed version for the GTab.

(5 months later...) The nook app has been updated to support magazine and newspaper subscriptions as well as user ePub files.
Yeah, works great for me! I'm loving being able to read magazines on this color display as apposed to the terrible magazine support on the standard Nook. A few bugs, but mostly going without a hitch.
So, I own the NC. It rules as a tablet, but as an e-reader, I love, love, love, love, love my Kindle. It's lighter, viewable in the sunlight better, etc.... Strictly as an e-reader it's better. The problem I have is that I do sometimes read on the NC at night just because the screen is backlit. This doesn't cause any problems when I'm reading Kindle books as they seemlessly sync between both devices with no problems.
The issue I run into is with books that I sideload. I've got a library of books that I obtained from 3rd parties. I can easily sideload them with Calibre on either device with no problems. I can't find a way to sync them though and I'm not sure if there is one. If I read 100 pages on the NC, then I have to figure out what that corresponds to on the Kindle and vice versa. Any ideas? Part of me makes me think this won't work just because the Kindle obviously can't run any apps. I can email documents to my Kindle and get the books to my Kindle that way, but I can't access those documents from the Kindle app on the NC so it's not a solution for me. Any ideas?
I wanted to do the same thing.. followed these instructions & working fine. Won't sync highlights or notes.. only the location.
wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Sync_with_non-Amazon_eBooks
The location is really all I'm looking for. I am definitely going to try this this weekend. I've got over 200 side loaded books so I'm not gonna do this for all of them obviously, but for the ones on my reading list, this is so worth it if it works.
Edit: It looks like this is designed to work between the PC app and the Kindle. Will it also work between the Android Kindle app and the Kindle? What folder do I need to drop my .mobi books in?
It syncs the location both ways fine all devices. You just need to edit the exth type on the mobi file before you sideload it to your kindle/nc.
I don't use calibre to sideload, I just use it to convert epubs to mobi. I import the epub, convert to mobi, then export the mobi. From there, I edit the exth type, and keep that edited mobi in my own directory structure... dragging & dropping the file into my devices. For android devices, there's a kindle directory on the sdcard, and on kindle, drop it in the 'documents' folder.
I imagine you can reimport the mobi file to calibre after you edit it to sideload it that way, but someone else would know better...
Does anyone know any apps that can open .mobi files? I have a bunch of ebooks but I'm not sure what app can open it
Thanks

MobiPocket Reader. Looks like it is right protected format so there is probably nothing that can read it.
See here: http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/MOBI
Amazon Kindle app will read MOBI files.
After you install Kindle app, just drop ebboks into the kindle folder that is created on your SDCARD. You may need to close and reopen Kindle to see the ebooks.
Cheers
Stu
Perfect thanks
Calibre, a free program on the PC, can also convert a mobi file into just about anything you want, such as epub. Then you can read them in your ebook reader of choice.
To make it easy to then move them onto your Android phone, many popular reader apps (like my fave, Moon+ Reader) access your Calibre library directly if you are on the same wifi network, and Calibre has their own app for accessing your library from an Android device.
Has anyone found a universal e-reader that can read both Mobi and Epub formats? My collection of books for the nook color include both and I'd rather just go with 1 reader instead of 2 if I could. If there isn't such a thing what readers would you guys suggest for a CM7 rooted NC? Thanks for the help!
I think Cool Reader supports both, I never tried it so can't say for sure
According to https://market.android.com/details?id=org.coolreader&feature=search_result Cool Reader does indeed support both (though only non-DRM Mobi files).
Why not just download Calibre to your PC and let it manage your books. Does all the translations for you

Seconded. Converting Mobi to epub is a snap in calibre, and then you can choose your own e-reader. I recommend Aldiko, personally. It has a lot going for it over the nook app.

This may be hard to believe but not everyone has a PC in front of them 24/7.
Cool Reader is very good for mobi files.

You don't have to have a pc in front of you all the time....just long enough to convert your existing mobi files. Takes about 30 seconds each. Thus the use of the word CONVERT, rather than READ.

It is? I have yet to get the Market version to open a single non-DRM one, regardless of whether the extension is .mobi or .prc - despite this ability being touted on the Market page (but strangely not the official home page).
Rodney
DaoCaoXie Reader claims to handle both epub and mobi formats although I use Calibre and have never needed to test the mobi functionality.
I have to say I've tried all the eReaders going on Android and like DaoCaoXie Reader the best. It has its limitations; searching is non-existent and it can import only 80 books. But for easy reading with nice page transitions; full brightness and font control I like this one a lot.
[edit] I've just looked up info on DaoCaoXie Reader and it seems that automatic import is limited to 80 books, not the whole library.[/edit]
I tried almost all the readers before settling for FBReader. It says it supports mobi but I always use ePub. For me it was the easiest to use and is most flexible. The default formatting wasn't great but I could quickly change the font, line spacing and margins to get it to look exactly how I liked. For what I like it beats every reader software in my book, including the Nook Color stock reader.
No affiliations, just a satisfied user.
I also use FBReader, but haven't tried the .mobi because I already converted all my .mobi to .epub (and any new books I just buy in .epub).
I also like FBReader because of the FBSync app that lets me keep it synced with my Thunderbolt. That is the reason I switched from Aldiko.

Well for a thread about reading .mobi eBooks ... good comment. Especially the more so because FbReader, by its own admission doesn't do .mobi.
FbReader is, IMHO, awkward, clunky and ugly ...but if thats what you want - go for it.

From the FBreader.org about page:
Main features:
Supported e-book formats are
ePub, an international e-publishing standard.
fb2, a Russian e-books standard de facto.
plucker, one of the most popular Palm e-book format.
Non-DRM'd version of Mobipocket, a popular commercial e-book format.
More formats.
As to FBReader being "clunky" - that is indeed your opinion. I find it it no more clunky than Aldiko or other readers, and the FBSync option makes it much less "clunky" in actual use for my purposes than other readers.
I use ireader for drm'd .prc / mobi books (some work, some don't) can't recall if it supports epub though.
I also had books in various formats. After trying many different options to read .mobi books. I finally decided the quickest and easiest thing to do was use Calibre to convert everything to .epub I'm also using a Calibre app to import my books from PC to the SD card on my NC and have found that to be much easier than mounting my Nook every time I wanted to upload a new book.
I purchased Laputa, Aldiko and tried several others but have decided that my favorite ereader for managing my large library is Moon+ Reader. I find the layout easy to navigate, the options are plentiful, developer is responsive and I really enjoy the page turning animation.

Yes, I agree Moon Reader is most excellent and certainly worthy of everyone's consideration. I used it for quite a while before landing on my current favourite;DaoCaoXie
Also agree that Calibre just sorts alomost everything out. It doesnt handle comics very well though. 'Perfect Viewer' is the best of the current bunch for cbz files.
Thanks everyone I ended up going with cool-reader and it is exactly what I was looking for.
I use iReader. It handles encryped .mobi, .prc, ereader, etc and stores your keys in a wallet so new titles downloaded with an existing key open automatically.
it's great if you've been stuck with a bunch of fictionwise or peanutpress files you can't read anymore!
