my second nook color..... - Nook Color General

Long story short I had to exchange my first one due to it creeking on the left side and a red ghosted arc in the middle. Now my second has bad power button. Anyone else have any issues? Kinda getting annoyed.

Mine creaks on the left hand side and so does my friend's. Seeing as it doesn't have any effect on functionality, we're perfectly fine with them. My friend's first one had a volume problem where it muted it self permanently every time the screen locked. They seem to have a lot of design issues.

Kinda dissapointed but for 250...... should I be picky? They told me if I had anymore problems I would have to send it in. That's garbage imo.

Mine is perfect. No creaks. I must be lucky.

Why the canadians gotta get all the good ones?!?!?!?!?!?

I've had 2 and both were creeky...
Other than that no issues...

Did I mention that my back cover seems to be lose or has a lil Play? I guess that is better than the creeking.

The creaking was driving me nuts, took the thing apart and wedged a small piece of paper between two plastic bits at the corners of the lanyard hole.

That danged 'feature' seems to be the cause. mine creaks on the bottom near it.

I have 2 nook colors and mine has a slight creak when I squeeze the top and put my ear against it but not really noticeable. Other than that all is great, I guess I am just lucky.

Forget that, Until my "30 day money back thing" is over id take it in everyday, maybe that B&N/BB/Walmart just cant stock shelves right.
Once thats over then youve got your 1-year warranty for sending it in.
And im not picky, mine creaks but Hardware problems like a button not working is unacceptable, for 250 I expect at least one year of use.

I have one as well, its towards the bottom corner near the N button..
Its not very noticeable, but since I know its there it drives me nuts...
Not going to risk another exchange since it might be worse than this one.

No dead pixels here. I have creaking though. I wonder if it's happened due to the case I have and how it locks in?

I had creeking straight out of the box. Its not your case.

On my second. First had a faulty volume button. This one has the creaking, but I can live with that.

i haven't noticed any creaking with mine but i think my charger is bad causing repeated random keystrokes when i use it while it's plugged in

Same here. I had this same issue with my galaxy epic4g...using a defective usb cable...i can live with the wonky kb while bein charged...just curious as to what it might be.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I don't have any of the problems listed here. I received my NC as a Christmas gift. It was even wrapped by B&N too! The only "problem" I've noticed is some very slight light bleed at the top center.

Anyone with dust under the screen?

Seems like a few people on Android Forums are having this issue. Anyone else noticing dust under their screens, especially after keeping the phone in your pocket for a while? Evidently, for those that have the issue, it's noticeable under bright light.
My phone should be in my hands tomorrow or Friday, but obviously I won't stand for dust under the screen. That's something I'd expect with a Razr (which mine suffered from back in the day)... my G1 never had this problem.
HTC SVP c500 (on orange UK) aka HTC Typhoon had the infamous dust problem too.
I have quite a few specs of dust under the glass on the lower left of my screen. May gave to contact Google to see what the replacement policy is.
Grrrr
god I hope this doesnt become a wide spread issue!!! I have no dust under my screen thus far... and I hope it stays that way.
I also have dust under my screen. I called HTC yesterday and they told me that i can exchange it for a new one within the 14 days, but I'll lose my engraving (kinda lame.)
hopefully the next one doesnt have the same problem. Would be nice if there was a way to clean it.

You're better off finding out if it's an issue as early as possible. As soon as I get my phone, I'll be keeping it in my pocket when not in use (though that may be a very limited time). If it gets dust, it's going back.
I keep the phone in it's little case it comes with inside my pocket, takes an extra second to get out but it's only temporary until some companies come out with some sweet cases.

But that won't tell you if the seal around your screen (or wherever the dust is entering from) is defective or not. That's why I suggested "trying" to get dust in early, by keeping it in your pocket at times. If it doesn't get dust, then you're fine.
I don't want to test this out... as soon as my full-body screen protector gets here, it's going on the phone and staying there. No dust for my phone!
i just realized that one corner of my screen makes a clicking sound when i apply pressure to it (bottom right corner). Upon closer inspection i realized the clicking was the screen adhesive not sticking down. I can see the corner of the screen moving verrry slightly under pressure (probably .005" worth of movement) This is also the corner most of the dust is accumulating. It looks like the adhesive they use to hold the glass down is at fault. Hopefully this isnt widespread.
Calling HTC now to demand my exchange! If you have dust under your screen try pushing on the corners.

Just got off the phone with an HTC rep. They set up a "swap" so I'll get my new phone before I have to ship my old one back. Unfortunatly I'll be losing my engraving... oh well.
The rep told me this problem is "known" and they are taking corrective actions.
My phone is being delivered tomorrow. I'm wondering if I should refuse the package and wait until HTC's 'corrective actions' have been applied before I reorder.

It's known... of course. Yeah, the engraving is a small price to pay, especially considering you can get it engraved on your own if you want, albeit for a few bucks.
So the first thing to do when you get the phone is to press down on the edges and superglue the **** out of it XD

I'm getting mine tomorrow and from what I read, it will be in my pocket all the time and see if it happens before the 14 days.
Thanks for raising awareness of the issue to us all.
This has been a pretty rampant issue on many of HTC's latest smartphones. My N1 will hopefully arrive sometime this year, they're taking their time shipping it out, but if this is the case, it's going back.

Indeed it has. One would assume they actually thought about this, proofed the production process/adhesive/whatever, and at least tested some phones before hitting the markets. Oh well, guess they don't.

Creaky hardware?

Is anyone having basic build quality issues with the NC hardware? I just exchanged my first one because it had a mushy power button that didn't click, and the replacement i find makes a creaking noise whenever i grab it by the left side. I know it's going to drive me crazy if I don't exchange it again.
I haven't experienced any of those... in fact I find the construction to be quite solid. Bad batch maybe?
I returned my first Nook Color because there was a dust speck in the screen. I couldn't rub it out and it kept bothering me so I brought it back to B&N and they gave me a brand new one. I wonder what they will do with the one I gave them. Everything seemed to work except that one dust particle in the screen.
Mine had a dead pixel which awoke after a bit of use, but other than that (and I'm picky) it's been really solid. The touchscreen is a bit wacky at times, but that could be me - I have extremely dry skin and that can cause issues.

Funny, I am having the exact same issue with my NC. Creaky left side. Kinda makes a 'click' noise in about a one inch spot on the left middle by the screen. Kind of annoying but I suppose I'll live with it..
Definitely experiencing the creaking as well, and now I am noticing the back left side has some 'give' to it, allowing me to actually push it in slightly. The right side is perfectly firm. Anyone else notice this? Only had it for a few days, so if this is an isolated issue I will return/exchange it.
Thanks
+1 mushy power button here too.
no dead pixels though so I think i'm going to keep it.. I've got 'QuickBoot' installed anyways as a workaround
Mine is creaky, too. Everything that matters (to me) appears to be working well.
The top frame may be a 'snap-on' thing that snaps-on from right to left resulting in a bit of a space on the left side about a 1/3 of the way up. I'm sure most folks are sensing/feeling/hearing the 'creak', especially when moving through different ambient temperatures.
Touch and squeeze most of your devices (notebooks, phones) that are composed of different materials, e.g. plastic and metal, and, more than likely, they 'creak', too.
I have the creaking too. I thought about exchanging it but I don't really notice it anymore.
I returned my first nook color because of the creaking on the right side. It only happened after the device warmed up.
The second one is now doing the same thing on the left back. As much as I love it, it doesn't seem very solid.

Yeah i've got the creak top left corner. Doesn't bug me much but I do plan on keeping an eye on it.
I've got the creaky left side too. It hasn't bugged me too much, but the USB cable did catch on fire when I plugged it into my Nook this morning.
So that was fun.

I'm thinking of returning mine too. I have creaking. Anyone else have a bowed panel where the home button is? The left side is about a 0.5 mm lower then the center and the right side is about 0.25 mm lower then the center.

Seriously, the USB cable sparked and caught fire when I plugged my Nook Color into it this morning.
It didn't appear to damage the Nook, but the USB cable end is burnt and blackened.
Needless to say I'll be taking it back.
I'll take some pictures in a bit.

You know, that actually doesn't sound far fetched to me. For some reason the USB cable does not want to work in 2 of my known working USB slots. Windows gives me the standard "USB root hub has detected a power surge" message. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if it caught fire. I plan on seeing about a third party cable if I keep running into weirdness with it.

Tiny bulge under SIM slot after 6 days

I just noticed this evening that I have a little bulge under my SIM slot. The rubber protrudes about 1mm, and is about 1/4" long. It happens to be exactly above where my ring finger rests when I hold my phone, as if my finger (over the past 6 days) has forced the separation. It's nothing a bumper or case won't fix -- but I don't have a bumper or a case.
Hopefully it's an isolated case **He naively says starting at the screen lift on his Nexus 7**

Hi
Might just be clip on the back cover that hasn't engaged. Can you clip it back in by squeezing the back at that point against the front?

Nah, it's surprisingly stubborn. I've put quite a bit of pressure trying to "pop" it back into place to no avail. I really do hope this isn't a mass problem. I'm going to do an RMA (also have the rattle & hiss). The next one I'll have a case from Day 1.

The rattle is just the plastic lens in the camera related to auto focus, a lot of phones have the same rattle, search for "camera rattle". Hiss is caused by the DC-DC power converters in the phone, it's a known issue with low power equipment such as mobile phones, just do a search for the terms "dc dc converter audible noise". These are not faults, just side effects of the technology that most people will ignore or not notice.
Such is the variable nature of these components you may get another phone that appears better or just the same or even worse, but very likely the rattle will always be there as that is just how the cameras are at rest with nothing powering the magnetic servo of the lens.
Obviously the bulge in the side of the case shouldn't be there, certainly a reason to get it replaced.
Regards
Phil
OP - I finally received my phone yesterday and noticed that I too have the same little bulge. Mine is on the opposite side of the phone. It does look like it's just a clip that didn't engage. However, like you, I tried to push it in to no avail. Since there is nothing else wrong with my phone at all I am holding off on sending it in for an RMA because I'd be afraid to get a phone with worse defects. This one is so minimal that I can live with it. Especially since I REALLY have to look for it to see it.
With that said, I'm contemplating just removing the backing, which I have read is super easy (just remove the two screws at the bottom and the sim tray and it pops off). I was thinking about doing this to inspect that little section to see if something is just protruding a tiny bit that can be easily corrected. I'm going to wait until I see others have successfully removed the backing before attempting it myself.
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.
UPDATE: I called Play Support and told the rep about the issue. He said I'm not the first person to have the small bulge and recommended an RMA since it's considered a defect so I went that route.
I returned a Nexus 7 that had the same problem. There was no screen lift, so I hesitated, but after taking the back off and seeing that internal components were pressing the bezel outwards (and the screen had been attached onto the already-bent bezel, leaving the bulgey spot without any adhesive to speak of even if I could get the bezel straight) I decided I didn't want to wait for dust to start creeping in and took it back. Glad I did, my replacement was perfect. Hope you get the same result with a new N4 (whenever they get around to having a new one for you :| ).
Damn I have the buldge to Don't know if i'm just noticing or if it's been there all along. I've decided i can live with the tiny amount of hiss in the ear piece and the camera rattle (which i've been told and believe is normal and not a defect). Can't decide if this is something that'll worsen over time or just live with this in fear of getting a device with worse issues. DOH

Don't fret. I called Google about this issue since I have it too. The rep told me he had a few reports of this and recommended an RMA for it. It won't get worse but if it does bother you just call and have them send you a new one. The process is really easy. I've done this in the past with other Nexus devices as well. They send you a new one within 3-5 business days and put an auth charge on your card for the full price of the phone. Then, when you get the new phone you put the old one in the box and send it back to them. When they receive the phone they remove the auth hold. This way you are never left without a phone.

anyone experience popping noise when pressing note 9 screen?

Hey!
Got a Note 9 last week and day after receiving it i noticed when holding the note 9 and pressing on screen in certain areas (near sides/corners/centre) it would make a popping noise, sounds like adhesive behind the screen not adhering properly or something like that. I got Samsung to replace with a brand new one and same thing with this one, it happens whether phone is on or off, it's definitely not rite as you can hear it very clearly, feels like some flex going on in screen when it happens as i can feel the screen kind of dip slightly when it makes the noise, but ok when it does not make the noise.
Curious to see if anyone else have had the same issue? gutted as loved it for the short while i had it but sending second one back now for refund as worried something will happen with screen further down the road and Samsung may not cover it. I know of at least 3 others who had this issue when buying same time as me.
Cheers.

Hey thanks for sharing that. This is the first link I got searching for this, I have it happen to mine note 9 too. It's such a bummer since I had it for only three days and will have to setup a new one from scratch if they have to replace it.
are you sure the s-pen isnt vibrating when you tap it on that side? remove the s-pen and tap it. i bet it goes away
Wow. No issues like that. I've had three Note 9s and all three have been perfect. I'd definitely return for a replacement. Weak or loose glue could seriously affect the water resistance, since it depends on a water tight seal between the screen and the frame. I'd never recommend using your phone in water anyway, but I at least like the assurance that if my phone takes an accidental dip. There's a good chance it will survive.

Yep real shame, my replacement was the same to, it's on way back, getting a refund, not worth risking something going wrong with the screen later down the road, i mean manufacturers do anything to not accept responsibility specially when it comes to screens. First one started on second day, it was great for the first day, replacement was doing it from the moment i took it out of packaging and holding it, it was worse than the first one.

agreed.
After studying the noise a bit more, it is definitely an issue with the glue. It will not happen all the time I press the screen, but it happens more often when the phone is a bit warm to the touch (e.g. charging the battery). Also, it appears to be along the side where the battery resides - I wouldn't worry about the battery itself, it just makes sense that the glue will get loose where it heats up more often (in my case, I don't stress the phone all that often for the other side where the SoC is to play a role). Anyways I'll be returning it tomorrow once the shops here in Berlin open 'cause now it's christmas break.
One extra thing that might be interesting, the back-side also has some sort of a glass-separation issue, at least it looks like that. Notice the circular smudge around and right of the DUOS label - I tried cleaning it but it comes back, I think the glass is separated at that point too, but just a tiny bit. I've had the phone for four days and haven't dropped/hit/scratched it AFAIK.

i agree with you, seems to be adhesive/glue issue, it did not happen all the time for me either but as you mention it, i noticed it more after recharging (when phone gets warm) so think you nailed the issue on the head to be honest.
I noticed it around the sides (edges) and the centre of screen, second one was even worse much more noticeable and was happening straight away after taking it out of box.
Something i noticed but never mentioned as wasn't sure but second one was the same, maybe it's normal but don't think it is, on the curved corners of the screen it appeared to me the screen looked slightly lifted not flush with the frame but only on corners.
I live in the UK btw. I was thinking a bad batch but seeing Samsung had a good deal on with cashback and discount i imagine they sold allot between the time i arranged to send mine back to getting the replacement which was a week so i imagine they would have been separate batches although i could be wrong.

Cool, thanks for the info. It's too dark in the winter days so it's hard to say if the glass is a bit off on the corners, but nevertheless, I will write back when I (hopefully) get a replacement one.
One last thing - you did speak directly with Samsung support? Did you buy it from their store or you just didn't want to bother with the store you bought it from?

I bought it directly from the Samsung online uk store. There was a discount direct from Samsung for students/people who work in certain industries so it could be bought for £699 (£200 off), but also they were offering £150 cashback bringing total down to £549, plus cashback by going via a cashback website meant i would have had it for around £504, also they were doing trade in so people could get even more off up to another £150.00 bring cost down to £399, then people got the samsung game deal thingy, don't play games myself but people can get a Fornite theme by downloading Fornite playing 3 games then you get the free theme, kids going bonkers for the theme, people selling the theme upto £100. So people could have the phone at a bargain price.
So I got a replacement, and just as you said, the display had the same popping sound out of the box. It happens like once a day, but since there is really no substitute for this device right now (stylus + good DAC, besides all the other great features), I'll keep using it and if it gets worse contact Samsung down the line for warranty/replacement. Decided to leave this as information if some other person happens to have the same problem in the future.

feel for you, such a shame and disappointing to happen a second time, it's a great phone, i did not want to risk it so sent second one back too. Fingers crossed you won't have any issues. Mine was happening regularly so like you say just keep an eye on it.
I don't have that issue even with the tampered glass on my phone.
Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
i actually noticed it a few times.. like last night it was doimg it. sort of right above where the keyboard is in portrait mode..
it seems to happen when its really cold outside for me.. its not enough for me to have it replaced thankfuly
I can replicate this when I clean my screen with a microfibre cloth. It happens on pretty much all of the screen. I believe I can also see some light streaks in the screen when this happens. The popping sound happens regardless of the temperature of the phone. Will have to inspect it more to see if I can spot any other issues with the screen. I got mine in the UK just over a week ago. Apart from that I think the phone has been great so far. Not sure whether to replace it.
glad i sent mine back now to be honest, personally i would send back, as you say everything else is great apart from the screen popping sound. The worry for me is the screen might cause issues further down the road, screens are the biggest issue with mobile phones and manufacturers are quick to blame user and deny warranty.

My Unlocked US Note 9 does it too. Mine mainly does it on the right side near the middle. It's not enough for me to warrant sending it back; it still works fine and I don't see any screen issues when pressing on the screen. Also I bought mine used so I'm guessing the screen was replaced. If it gets worse, I guess I'll fix it then.

Screen lifting on Rog 2

Greeting all! I've had my Asus Rog 2 for a little over a month I'd say. I have the proper Republic of Gamers version. I've noticed on the left side, where the attachment port is. An amount of flex in the screen along the seal. It's probably only a millimetre or so. But it flexes up and down when pressed, seeable from a side on view. The other side where the volume and power buttons are does not that this flex. There is also a light difference to sound when tapping that side of the phone while typing. Which I can only put down to the slight screen compressing on the left. I'm not sure how I can to notice it. Some people have said it might be an intentional aspect of the phone to give a small amount of flex/shock absorption but I can't find anything online mentioning it. I'm more leaning towards it being a fault in my phone. It's not once been dropped always been in a case. So yeah. Anyone able to shed light on this?

Finally. Someone with class and crazy sharp senses. I myself have severe OCD. I used to be very verbal about this kind of stuff on the AC forums xD. But on XDA i toned myself down.
First of all. Asus has crap for Quality Control. I had 2 ROGPHONE 2s with different power button height. And in between the lcd and bezel i could see glue. But okay nevermind.
As for the screen lifting near the accessory port, i do not seem to have it. Did you happen to sit on it? Or put the phone in the back pocket? Remembering that this is a tall phone.

Nope! I don't even take the phone to work with me. I swap to my previous phone.
I'm pretty sure it's a fault. It hasn't caused any issues apart from some annoyance to my OCD. As long as it doesn't worsen it's not something I can't live with.

It will worsen. You should get it replaced. Im sure it will eventually become wider from the flexing. Btw do you use the accessory port often? And do you have a tempered glass applied?

I wouldn't have a clue how. I'm in Australia and I purchased the phone via eBay.
I've used the accessory port once, just to check it out. Used the fan for maybe 15 minutes. Other than that I've never removed the piece of rubber there.
And yes, I have a tempered glass protector applied.

Yeah, it's 100% the screen. You can see the black edge of the screen move up and down from the dark drownish side of the phone. I'll just have to keep an eye on it I suppose. Bit annoying though. Pay almost $1,700 for one of the best phones on the market thinking you're going to get something issue free. Ha.

In Indonesia. Samsung has the best QC. I only had 1 issue with Samsung. Which was dust under the S7 Edge screen. But other than that they're very good. But Asus Indonesia is a joke. Its like we get a refurbished phone. I bought 2 rogphone 2s and each had their own defect. First had glue in between the screen and bezel, and my current unit has different volume/power button height.

Which is why I didn't want to buy the Tencent version. Plus it wouldn't work here correctly without getting into the firmware. I just figured I'd spend the money. Get the good one that'll have no issues. I asked the seller if they had warranty which the answer was no. They referred me to a few companies that do insurance on phones.
I've never bought a real expensive phone before, and my previous phone was 4 or 5 years old. It was an S5.
So it is annoying. But other than that I don't have any complaints about it.

Or you could use it until it shows signs of damage defect. Or bring it to an authorized repair shop. Im guessing lack of glue.

Lack of glue probably is the issue. I might see if there are any places around that can do it. Doubtful there would be around me. Best luck is probably Sydney. Which is a few hours away.

If you like DIY stuff. Try using LOCO glue. They helped me seal my Note 8 when it had cracks.

You seriously dont know how comfortable your comment has made me after reading it. I have always had this habit of checking my belongings (from my phone to my own body and muscles) to make absolutely sure there isnt a single even slighgest problem with it and guess what, there always is something to notice for me!
One of the reasons why I had never opted for an oled phone knowing I will notice the burn-ins one day when there isnt any other person who notices them.
Now I finally decided to go for this phone with the assumption that asus knows how to make gaming stuff, but now I can see several issues already, from the obvious red tint to the screen having lots of bandings and horizontal lines on lower brightness on gray color.
Now I can also feel the volume buttons not needing the same pressure and of of them being softer and also the rgb light on the back being poorly so when the light turns on there are some dots around it that also light up(i know that its only a white paper behind the back glass so if there are any print issues they will also light up)
Althought I dont have any serious issues(yet), im definitely not buying another phone from asus or any other not that famous brands for that matter. My last device was a sony x compact which I had for 3 years from when it came out and I still regret selling it, it was so damn perfect.
Btw, thanks for lettin me know that there is a disorder named OCD, I dont know why I hadnt searched about it already.

Hi, well thats quite a positive feedback. I had quite a backlash at AC forums. I've had people say that I'm making AC look like a Mental Issue Forum and some user even boasted how happy his credit card is if he buys a new phone when the old 1 is damaged.(credit card lol) Btw, i wouldn't say its a disorder. Different people have different standards. For me the Mercedes Benz S Klasse might be perfect, but for you it might not be.
And my OCD is definitely worse than yours. My phone can only be touched by me, and me myself dont touch the physical buttons(I'm afraid that it will be damaged).
And never feel alone about something. There will always be somebody out there having the same issue but not posting on the forums xD.

Not a fan of DIY.
So I stopped by a phone repair should this Arvo. The guy said to him it looks as though the battery is swelling. He said thats the side the battery is on so that is the most likely reason for it. He asked if the battery life was alright still.
Hard for me to really notice. I only use the phone on weekends and in the afternoons while home. I generally only charge it every second day, and I unplug the charger once it's at 100%. He said it isn't serious at the moment but if I notice battery charge fading fast, or if it swells a lot more to bring it back and he'll be able to put a new one in.
Just my ****ing luck to get shoddy battery, if that's the issue.

No they didn't. But it's their job so I'd say they can make a pretty fair guess.
I might go back there Monday, as I need my phone this weekend. On Monday I'll go back and tell them to do what needs to be done to fix it.
The battery is on the opposit side from the vent that would be on the left side of the vent, didnt you say that the problem was on the left side of your screen meaning its on the right side of the back??!

Yeah trust me the customer services' first guess is battery swell which basicly doesnt happen soon unless you are always charging your phone while playing and overnight and draining it to the last percentage. But is can happen as a result of physical impact or damage, and when it happens you will most probably notice the shortened battery life so I would say it's not a battery problem unless of course proven otherwise.
