I tried using the search but I get NOTHING relating to how to root a Nexus One, so if someone has the link can you please paste it here? Trust me I wouldn't bother posting this but the forum search is pissing me off.

****, do I need to go back to 2.1 to root then? Or am I good to do rooting straight from 2.2?

The basic steps are the same. Flash the recovery image as instructed in that guide, and then flash a pre-rooted kernel like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686627
That's gonna be the easiest method for you I think.

Hmm I did it the way I remembered with the oem unlock, recovery image flash, then the addon zip and it seems to have worked fine. Bootloader is unlocked and I am rooted, still running Froyo, but now am missing my keyboard...
Ah screw it I'm going to go with the FRF50 and see if that pans out and if not there is always a CM'd 2.1 to fall back to.
Try it with the kernel I linked to? It's optimized for FroYo.

Alright if the FRF50 doesn't install or work properly I'll go with a stock 2.2 and try that.
I love how easy it is to **** up this phone and yet fix it so easily.

And that, right there, is one of my favorite things about this platform. You're free to break the rules and try new things. When something doesn't work, you're not stuck - you can find a way to fix it or work your way around it. I love it

Yup couldn't agree more and 99% of the time all it takes is a wipe of everything and start over, and I love that I can do that. Like I screwed up the root and the OS was booting into landscape mode, for everything. Thank god the files downloaded fast and its back to normal!
By the way, with the root on 2.2, all the applications and what not should still work right? Like marketenabler and setcpu? Speaking of setcpu am I still safe to use the UV and OC kernal with 2.2 or should I avoid that?

I'm running the 2.6.34 OC/UV kernel that I linked you to - clocked to 1113MHz with SetCPU - works flawlessly. No issues here so far, and I've been running that setup since Sunday.

How would I do that then, my Froyo is already rooted, can I just reflash that and be all good or how else do I get that kernal?
If you've got an aftermarket recovery image installed, you can just download the zip file that is linked in that other thread, put it on your microSD card, and flash it from recovery.

Very awesome and it worked fine.
I'm going to guess I am missing a nice chunk of Marketplace apps because this is 2.2, notably some of the ones I bought, but its no biggie; marketplace enabler isn't installing but once again its a small trade off for what I am getting.
Glad it worked for you.
On the Market stuff, look around - I believe there are several threads discussing the issues and possible fixes/workarounds. I'm roaming in the middle of the desert so no Market to be found here or else I'd be able to help more.
Good luck!
Is anyone almost done with an easy way for the general user to root 2.2? 2.2 is awesome, but I don't want to swap Kernels or do any of that other advanced stuff..
1. Flash to stock
2. Install Rom Manager
3. Flash Cognition with Rom Manager
4. Done!

Hey all,
I am at the Stock ROM, step 1. But when I install ROM Mgr is states that I must be rooted to use.
As I read this thread, I need to be rooted to move to step 2. The whole idea of moving through these steps is to root my phone.
Am I missing something? Thanks...

just use one of the dozens of 'one click' roots that are found all over these forums....
Yes you can call me out. I deserve it.
But in my defense i tried everything and was at my wits end.
That said, i gave up too early. I tried one more time and just went to bed. When i got up i had 2.2. I dont know if it was Santa Claus or the Android Fairy and i dont care. It works.
Now i have the horrible lag issue and a Quadrant score of 950.
And now i have to face updating again and it spooks me.
Noobs, read the threads that deal with Froyo 2.2 and rooting. All the information is there. I am still a noob as are many others on the site, but with a little bit of reading and asking questions in those specific threads will get you far.
ok so many dumb questions:
I have ROM manager downloaded but it wont do anything because i cant do the Clockwork deal because my SD card is not mounted. I dont have a removable SD card but i do have one ordered and on the way. Does this mean i cant put Cognition on my phone using Rom Manager?

It doesn't matter if you have an external sd card. You must have USB debugging checked(applications - development)
Are you rooted?
Yeah thats the other thing. I am not rooted.
And i know there are a tonne of one-click root deals out there but what is the best and easiest method for 2.2?
Rooting is the part i dont know.

cognition is a rom by itself. if you want to use it, you need to flash back to stock using the odin one click restore to stock and then root it, run rom manager clockwork recovery mode, then install cognition from clockwork recovery mode.
there is no way to go from 2.2 to any version of cognition without flashing the kernel back to stock
the easiest method to do this is to just flash the whole phone back to stock.

the 2.2 one click root that you find on these forums will not work. it was designed for an older version of froyo on the i9000
i wanted to flash my first rom so i was watching the cognition youtube video. I was rooted previously and didnt do anything but install clockwork.
when i used odin3 to revert to stock, then tried to root again instead of reinstalling the root it brought me to clockwork recovery.
how do i continue to root from there?
app sdcard:update.zip? or install zip from sdcard?
do you have the update.zip to root on ur sd, if so then apply update from sd.
It just brought me back to the manual recovery screen. I guess im destined to not have root access anymore?
If you have clock work then don't need to root. Just flash the rom from there.
Makes sense. How will I obtain superuser permissions in the future then?
My guess is the the update.zip you have has cwm in it not root. After you flash any rom it will be rooted.
no real reason to ever be on stock. it's awful.
Dude it worked! I knew someone knew what they were doing lol.
Thanks so much man! I would donate but im poor atm lol. [email protected] email where i can in the future though!
One quick question...
When I redownloaded rom manager it asked to install the recovery again. Should I install it again even though I can seem to get to it already?
Will it hurt the phone to download it even though I can get into it anyway?
Rom manager is useless...clockwork is baked into all custom kernels. No need for it st all once your off stock.

Radio = baseband...
Check the development section first page at the top for every radio file.
Be careful flashing them, don't ever flash on a low battery or pull the battery out during flashing

i thouught radios can only be flashed when u have radio s-off? as far as i know.. revolutionary doesnt provide radio s off. (not sure, been in a cave for too long )
I don't know though, I not even sure what are radios and I went ahead to flash them. The last I flashed was a radio from Android Revolution HD.
So is radio the thing which require you to open up a command prompt alike thing and type in something like " fastboot" or what. .
Sorry for asking a noob question , what do radios actually do other than affecting your signals and calls? ?

Radio is not command prompt, it is the range of frequencies your phone uses.
It controls calls and call it quality, signal strength, gps, texting, 3g/hspa, wifi, etc...
Maybe someone here can help me.
I have a custom recovery/bootloader, and what I have done is copied android revolution HD and CyanogenMod7 onto my memory card.
I go into recovery, wipe dalvik, wipe cache, factory reset THEN install either of these ROM'S
it installs and says its completed then I go to reboot the phone. It's just got the HTC logo/text with white background and does not change. Not sure what is wrong here. It's S-ON, but is rooted apparently, so I can flash custom ROM'S just not flash radios etc.
I did however try like 5 custom roms, and the only one that works so far is 'MiUi' but it is buggy and wifi does not work. Dunno why.. don't really like the look and feel of it though. So want to try cyanogenmod or either android revolution.
I can't even go back to stock as easily, I've tried, (ran the .exe, opened up %tmp% and taken the rom.zip and did a series of commands to do it) and comes back with failed. I have HBOOT 1.16.0000 though and all of the stock ROMs say 1.13.0000, so not sure what to do.

I just bought a used Hero as a temporary phone and I'm trying to get off the stock rom. I rooted the phone and flashed a MIUI rom. It got stuck on the splash screen during boot. Not feeling like dealing with it, I just ended up RUUing it. Then I rerooted it and tried another rom...same deal. Now I back to stock again. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
Thanks
You didn't firate anything, did you?
Try manualy flashing the boot.img in the rom from fastboot. Sometimes thats the problem.

Good idea. I'd need abd for that though to run the commands right? I'm really trying hard to avoid installing it on my computer.
Why ?? If your going to be modding your phone s-off,eng-bootloader & adb are all tools you will definitely need. If not then you may have a few headaches down the line if something goes wrong.

I won't be doing anything beyond flashing a custom rom.
I just dug up my Hero. It had CM6 previously. I tried flashing an updated ROM and it does not get past the HTC logo. I tried 4 different ROMs. Using CMW recovery. Wipe/Format all...and nothing.
Yeah I'm completely out of ideas. I may just have to suck it up and install adb.
Which version of CWM are you running? I've used 2.5.0.1 for all of my ROMs and never had a problem. I should have the zip to flash through recovery and the HERCIMG flashable through HBOOT if you wanna try.

What radio do you have? I remember people having issues when using the older radio (.27) instead of the newer (.29). Then again, it might not make a difference at all either. Just a thought.
