Rooted Nooted Nook - My Review - Nook Color General

I rooted my Nook without much consideration. It was very hard to do on a Mac. However, I am stupid, that probably explains why I rooted. It works great. Angry Birds, but that's a bit like buying a book to read then tearing out all the pages to make paper airplanes. The plus side is you'll have some amazing paper airplanes by the time you get to the page where Dumbledore dies (Dumbledore was just autocorrected on my computer!!). However, realize that this approach is a waste of money, you should instead only do this with library books. Library books! I just checked out some library books on my Nook! That's insane to me, somehow they limit the amount of people who have access to the ebook and it self destructs after three weeks. That disturbed me so I torrented it instead, I'm a slow reader and I like running up my library late return fine super high. If they won't take my money why should I take their books?
Overall I'm impressed by everything except the lack of interesting wallpaper. If you're always in a lovely mood and enjoy elastic band jeans, don't worry! They supplied plenty of options for you. Or maybe you like tribal masks or play basketball or like the appearance of yellow snot smeared over your screen. Oh wait, it's not your screen. If you want to add anything to your daily shelf it has to be bought through Barnes and Noble. I bought, or rather was gifted this magical glowing machinery, I am not renting space out on the damn thing. Thank god for Calibre, at least I don't have to pay for a glorified RSS feed.

that was quite an interesting review xD

so many thoughts...... so little time.. I can't keep this guys opiniin straight.

I agree. It seems like he paid a prostitute to write it.

You lost me at hard to do on a mac. It was easy.

I stopped reading at "I'm stupid" because I don't read, or listen to, anything stupid people say.

[Q] Need help convincing my wife

I've decided on purchasing the Nook Color. I've been saving my pennies, but my wife is still not sold on the idea. She loves blogs and facebook, and she loves the netbook I got her for Christmas, but other than that she's not seduced by the raw technological possibility of the NC in the same way I am. What I need from you all is this: What features can I bring up to get my not-super-techie wife excited to own one of these things?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have children?
If so the children book range and the games you can get after root is a great way to keep them entertained.
(Im a teenager so i know what im talking about... lol)
Otherwise, the ability to use facebook, twitter and blog websites on the go is great, and other apps that just save time, like calculator apps for instance are EXTREMELY useful...
There also:
Recipe books (if she likes cooking)
Pandora
But to tell the absolute truth, if she doesn't want an ereader to actually read off, i dunno if you'll be able to convince her to get it...
If you can't convince her that you *need* it. And trust me you do....
Just bring it home.
If she gets mad (and she will)
Simply blame me.

I conviced my wife that the Nook would help me in many ways.
1) I am a Systems Engineer working for a large indrustral plant. I carry manuals, drawings, books, etc on my phone and a day planner with me. I was able to replace the planner with the Nook, I have moved all of the other stuff to the nook and the biger screen is very helpful.
2) I am attending classes for a masters degree. I have been able to get some of my books in PDF or Epub formats. It is also helpful for reviewing notes etc...
3) When I fly I can use the Nook for music, games, movies, etc...
take her to the store, use the demo model, and hope she falls in love with it. My wife thought it was gadgety, but now it's pretty much all she reads on. We had to strike an accord on rooting though. Eventually I switched to Nookie Froyo, and during the day when I'm not home I reboot it without the card so she can use it "stock". According to her it became too confusing once I rooted it (never did figure that one out), but finally it boiled down to the home screen replacement. I left it rooted, but went back to the nook home screen and disabled softkeys (button savior helped here since it's easier to hide), so it's as close to stock as it could be with still having the ability to load apps.
Bonus, if she likes magazines, they are actually pretty nice to read on the Nook. the 1.1 update makes them even better, so I look forward to rooting catching up with that so I can keep up my hybrid build. Good Luck!
Gee, sounds like the simplest thing is that "you have a netbook, I'd like a NOOKcolor"... that is, unless you have the netbook/laptop/etc. as well. Lucky me, we both have desktops, we both have netbooks, we both have Classic Nooks, and my wife still doesn't mind that I have the NC, 'cause she knows how much I like my toys.
(PS: the occasional gift (necklace, etc) for her makes it a lot easier for her to overlook my toys as well.)

What I did was take her (wife) to B & N and let her play with the NC. However, before we visited B & N, I shared a couple of YouTube videos illustrating the wonderful possibilities of the NC. Matter of fact, she took the NC to work the next day to show it off to her people.

Go ahead and buy it and tell her that it is a sweater.
My wife already had a Nook, and she was a little jealous over me getting the Nook Color as she "kinda" wanted a tablet, if it could: Facebook, Email, Read/Write Office doc files.
I installed a trial of one of the Office programs and let her play with it for a few.
We bought her one that night..
I can't imagine someone NOT wanting a nookColor! Once i rooted mine, hubby got so jealous he went and bought his own and had me root it for him. We are both 150% satisfied

Favorite quote/suggestion. ^^^^^
Anyway, we don't have any kids yet, but we're both working and going to school so budget is the biggest concern (hence me "saving my pennies"). She doesn't mind me having gadgets, it just has to either be a need or something she would love as well. I've taken her to B&N and told her "Just play around with the Nook Color for a minute." She always says "I don't know what to do when you say that." I like the cook-books angle because she does want to get more into cooking and one of her friends brought up that very point.
Please keep the suggestions coming! With the combined intellect on here, we can get me that Nook!
Thanks again!

My wife was the very same way, take her to the store and she just stares at the Nook Color saying "what do I do". I went ahead and bought her one for Christmas anyway. As soon as she turned it on she was hooked.
My wife is very much a facebook nut so she enjoys the fact that she can read and then flip the NC sideways and browse the full facebook website on a whim. And it helps to that she is an avid reader so once she got down the fact that she could have multiple books going at once... she now has whole book cases and home screens dedicated to different books depending on her "mood".
Ultimately, you don't NEED a Nook Color. That's tough to sell. But you mentioned school... this is great for school whether reading a pdf text book or a lit book for a class. Studying is good too, say you need to look up something online while your nose is in your real books. Well just pull the NC out and seconds later you got your answer all without the clutter of a full netbook/computer on the desk. Looking at papers taking notes... there are a lot of academic roads you can take if you head down the path of rooting.
All in all my wife was a netbook candidate too...
But once I bought her the NC she just took off with it. If your wife understands enjoying reading a book, then to her this "gadgety" Nook Color is a "readers netbook". Or heck if you take the time it’s almost an academic netbook of sorts.
Anyway good luck convincing but in my opinion the nook is hard to wrap your head around until you really get time to sit and comfortably mess around with it. The Nook Color is so customizable with rooting that really you get out what you want out of it, just takes time to let it mold itself into your life.
That’s my .02 hope it helps
I have an idea, how about you grow a pair and just buy it Im married and my wife spends a majority of my money, so when I want something I buy it, lol
We have 2 android phones, 2 laptops and a desktop in our house, but I think im going to buy a NC and root it so I have a facebook/web machine laying around thats more portable than her big a$$ macbook pro and my stupid work laptop...
I started off pushing for something much more expensive. When I showed her I could buy something for half the price, she happily agreed. Seriously, after I explained what I wanted it for she was very supportive of my decision.
honestly though, take her to the mall, let her try on something nice and then offer to let her get it. She will think your being sweet, then you stop at Barnes & noble on the way home for payback

Were I to take the tactic you're suggesting and "grow a pair and just buy it," my wife would immediately take that pair, cut them off and stuff them in her purse so they'd always be close at hand to remind me what happens when I listen to people on the internet. And she'd return the nook. No, my friend. That would be disastrous.

This is your best bet, works great for me

They were talking about the rooted nook color on wsj.com!

So I was using the pulse news app to read the lastest happenings and come across a link about a possible " Market at risk for bubble?" article on the Wall Street Journal site. I was pleasantly surprised when a reporter showed off his rooted nook color in a section titled "Look, Ma I turned my e-book reader into a tablet." He explains it only cost $200 and really enjoys it. I felt proud! The part about the nook begins around the 4:15 minute mark!
Here is the link:

I wished he tried nookie froyo or even cm7. I need to send him an email with some links to tutorials.

Nooking with Encore
Read something similar to this clip and has made me think about about how much a tablet should really cost.
The NC was always first and foremost an eReader so they could sell the hardware at a dirt cheap price and cover the costs through the books. I'm guessing they did not think too much about the margins on the hardware because of the book sales but it makes you think how much a tablet should really cost. Nothing in the market comes close to NC's cost at the moment.
I don't really buy into the component glut they are suggesting but I am guessing in the long run, tablets will become cheaper and cheaper which good for us all. I just remember the old episodes of Star Trek where the techies in the background all had tablets all busily working away in the background. The future is coming soon than we think
I hate how the barometer these days seems to be be...but does it have/run Angry Birds? He didn't even show any of the actual cool stuff you can do once rooted.

[RANT]Why do the current tablets SUCK?

I'm shopping around for a new tablet, well I should preface with this. I have lusted after convertible tablets and slate tablets since I was 14, and luckily in 2008, I got the dell xt followed by the dell xt2. And now I am in the helm to shop for a new tablet. And then I settled on this pretty piece of machinery for my next purchase - the lenovo x220t. And it looks great...
So, happy ending. Seems like a great buy right? NO! I buy this and I am issued with the same crap I've been getting for years. An actual tablet OS. Oh yes someone chimed in - install android on it, you will love it. Er, no I don't. If I wanted a phone OS, I would get a phone OS. I hate the fact that if tablets are discussed, some brain dead ignoramus talks about oh get the ipad, or get the samsung galaxy or the motorola xoom.
And granted the xoom, by the hardware is mediocre at best that is further limited by a less than stellar android honeycomb in which the developers have done some of the stupidest things in terms of creating a lack of UX/UI Standard. Yes, the fricking "stage" looks nice, but in simple tasks like opening or closing the browser tabs, deleting email, programs, it totally and completely SUCKS. Yeah, the iOS for ipad is further refined in several instances, but if I wanted to buy a phone OS, I would get a phone. I can at least say, android is taking a step in a better direction by dividing the two OSes to make different developmental gains.
But what about the current crop of OSes now? Ubuntu, while fast, sucks, even with that pathetic god forsaken unity bull on it. Mac OSX, don't get me started! Windows 7, while fast, also sucks. And if you customize it for finger friendly operations, you get the ugliest pieces of crap I have personally ever seen. Maybe I should try the overlays. Yes been there tried that. It's like putting makeup on a pig. It doesn't hide the fact that it's still a pig and it surely don't make it pretty!
So at the end of this rant, what is a person to do who doesn't want god awful honeycomb or the laughable iOS or the pee poor big game changers. Wait, no really. That's the mythical answer. Wait. And that answer ticks me off! It's almost been 10 years since convertibles came around to be affordable and even more since the tablet actually began. In all that time, not one single OS can fit for a tablet paradigm? That mixes support for desktop applications that is stylish?
Who in the holy hell can save us from this tablet dominated trite that we have been exposed to for years!?

So why not just use a laptop? What advantages do you have using a tablet that a laptop won't give you?

@OP: when you do find a good tablet for that use, let me know. My sister is going onto her clinical studies in about a year and her netbook is just too bulky (!)
I suppose an iPad would be good, but I don't wanna let her fall into the trap of Apple so soon in her life.

zero data input value?
er...I just not only tutored a calc student with my tablet but just synced my 20 pages of notes via onenote that has easily converted it to text. I record my lectures on my tablet and save from the lack of a good ui/ux, this has been extremely reliable data input. And that's been there since windows xp...
In fact, spoke with a friend of mine whose an acupuncturist who lives on his tablet. Patient records, signatures, everything is on that hd and stored in some digital format.
@sakai4eva
as far as which to get, if she is doing something medical, skyscape is an indispensable block of programs that truly do help. Often I read the psychiatric information just for jokes and giggles. But for an MD student, it is fantastic. For anything else, the ipad is a joke and it's a waste of time for functional. Same can be said for the awful galaxy.
In terms of tablet pcs, what many have been crying for (myself included) is a better gpu. I am hoping the x220t sandies i7 processors will provide a better integrated gpu chip. However I will be stuck with n trig...the starting price for the x220t is 1100 USD (rumored) but probably for my specs it can easily become 2k.
Also, feel sorry for us. We can't "work" while doing this. Some schools offer assistanceships mine doesn't...damn santa barbara...

Hope you understand some of this:
1. She has to keep running around the hospital for the entire shift.
2. She needs to write down notes for the patient's illness and the teaching doctor's explanation
3. She needs to re-read all this when she gets back and compare with her textbooks
While a netbook could have filled her needs, it is very impractical to carry it around AND type while balancing drugs, stethoscope, patient's charts, etc. A tablet would work like a notepad with the ability to write immediately on the surface (as well as sketching) without using the keyboard for data entry.
Lightweight, easy to carry, long(ish) battery life, ease of use will be key factors here. I would have bought an iPad if she started now, or possibly a PlayBook when/if it comes out right.

Thanks for the tip on skyscape. If/when she gets her smartphone (no sponsorship here), I'll make sure she gets it.
I don't think she will need a unit with a "powerful" GPU per se, so I'm pretty much settled on the iPad unless the PlayBook turns out to be soooo much better.
As for the tablet, it'll be paid by myself or my father. She's gonna owe me big time for this
playbook may not have skyscape support
and for writing anything the ipad SUCKS
onenote has a much better system especially with cloud integration. Not to toot windows horn, but onenote is genius. That is bar none one of the best note taking programs out there. With acrobat pro, the combinations are endless. I can totally say that.
If form factor is an issue, ipad is definitely smaller than any tablet I am referring to, but not nearly as robust. The dell xt2 is about 2.5 lbs, with the hp 2740p about 3 pounds. If it is just for notes, I would go for the xt2 and you can catch one on ebay for around the same price as an ipad.

Does ANYONE like Skyline?

I feel like the only one....
Most people I ask tell me "the cgi is great, but I don't get it" or "i hated the way it ended" or "I don't understand why they needed brains" or "the acting sucked".
Was it really THAT bad?
I hate it. The acting is as bad as it gets. The script is even worse. If anyone here hasn't seen it, just watch the trailer. That's the whole movie.
The special effects is the only thing i liked.
Yes that one was a real turd. The chi was OK and the acting was bearable. But when I think back, it was just a waste of my not so pressures time.

I watched skyline for the first 10 minutes and then when I saw the black guy from scrubs trying to be a big timer, lol I was like ok I'm done. I like sci-fi movies so I wanted skyline to work but I can only stomach so much. On top of the lame script and horrible acting, the casting looked like it was done by throwing darts at names. Lost my attention quick. But best alien movie I've seen lately. BATTLE LA. Hands down badass!
I hate it too
I agree...Battle LA was awesome.
Skyline was just horribad, but yes, the CGI was impressive. Even though they couldn't seem to nail down the aliens size...something that was several times wider than a human shouldn't be able to fit through a normal door. >_< But the story and acting was just EXCESSIVELY bad.

I think Battle: LA could be MUCH better. It's no where near Skyline in "OMG WTF is this", but i think it should have included elements from the real event back in 1942 (more about that here)
I think if they'd make it more like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (since it's more like the real event), it would be better. But as an action movie it works quite well.
So I really am the only one.
Alright one more then....if you HAD to sit through one, would you rather Skyline or those Syfy channel "Movies"? Because those are movies I can't stand. I'm trying to feel my way into why I'm so "off" about this movie (as in, vs. public sentiment).
You're not the only one. GF and I watched it. We thought it was great entertainment and it kept us occupied the entire time.

Android child mode

Ok so Christmas is sneaking up on me and I'm thinking of getting my son (almost 3) one of these cheap android tabs. I was thinking of the innotab or leap pad but for its price i feel an android tab would do so much more and would be something he wouldn't grow out of in 6 months time.
So does any one on here know any good child mode apps i could use if i get him one? I wouldn't want him destroying the tab by changing all the settings and buying apps and sending emails to people etc.
I'd like an app that would boot into kids mode upon start up and that would be easy for him to access basic things like games and camera and coloring apps etc etc..and ideally a function where i could monitor his usage and see his progress in games and drawing...
Please help
Ps: for the people that think I'm mad, i am. Don't judge me for giving him a tab. I won't get an expensive one and even if i did, it's my money so no criticism please!

+1 Why can't people let kids grow up at a normal speed, rather than trying to magically make them become a geek by the time they're 5? Kids spend far too long staring at television as they grow up, give him something that will get his imagination working and get him outside in fresh air.
Yeah ive seen one i like the look of called kytephone. I found that one here on xda.
I was mainly after opinions on what people use for their child. And what they liked about it.
And although he's only 3 he's very clever like his daddy lol and it will hopefully stop him using my note.

Edit: this thread isn't going as i hoped. I will not stick him in front of the tv all day nor will he have access to this tab 24/7.
We do play outside, we do have fun that don't involve technology so what's the harm in him earning an hour or two tab time?
I'm after advice not criticism so can we get back on topic or shall i close the thread?
Thanks
You should probably get him something like this.
Additional link here.
Cheap and has toddlers in mind with it's design.

^^^This big time^^^
Children need to play outside and socialize. Its only going to do them good in the long run.
There is a kid's Nabi Android Tablet in the Bestbuy Flyer in the Black Fiday Thread.

Hey, he is 3? When's he going to play with a tablet? Shouldn't he be in school?

I agree with the earlier thread.....
I just bought all 4 of my kids the nabi2. It is sporting tegra3 processor etc..... very rugged. $199. I even play games on it. Extremely easy to root. My oldest is 14. He even likes it. Mainly because he doesn't have to worry about breaking it.
It has nabi mode. In it you control content etc.... and "mommy mode" is just your basic ICS.
Check it out.
Thanks for the replies guys!
As for the haters, yes he will be in nursery, yes he will play out side, i don't lock him in his room and feed him through a hatch!
He's 3, he's clever and if he behaves he earns a reward which will be playing on the tab. It's my money, my child, my house and my rules.

And with that, this thread comes to a close.
