[Q] Another broken market question! - Nook Color General

My market was working fine (You know what they say... if it ain't broke, don't fix it... I really should have listened) before I tried to add the new Vending.apk
The steps I took were copying the new market to my SD and backing up the old to my SD.
I deleted the old one on /system/app (all using Root Explorer)
Moved the new one to System, renamed it. Changed permissions and rebooted.
On boot, no Market.
Went to restore the old one, rebooted, no market.
Now I try to install the new one in the system/app with the .apk, and it simply says Application not installed.
Any chance I can get the old .apk just in case mine is faulty, or any advice?
Thanks fellas!

Should have thought about clearing Data before I tried anything. But now it's a little too late as I don't have the option to clear out the data. It just won't respond to the key press.
I downloaded the Vending.apk app from the original thread trying to get the market to work on the nook, and it is simply telling me that the Application could not install, again.
I really don't want to have to reset/reroot again, as I have had to do it for 6 units already and I just want to play on my new toy!
Any suggestions?

Have fun!
I installed after deleting the existing market apk. It force closes every time I try to use it. I cannot move it or copy it to system apps. I can put it in either internal memory or on the SD card. I can accept market terms and start it but then it force closes. I tried clearing data, cache and rebooting but same force close every time. I did not delete market updater apk. Any suggestions? I have the original market reinstalled until I can come up with a solution.
Woah, that's a huge change. o.o
I recommend getting the sgs tools app from the market. It has this included now and you don't have to worry about sideloading or moving the apk with a file manager or adv commands. The new market is really nice.
This is my captivate. There are many like it buy this one is mine.
works on cm6.1 beta 3
Worked on Perception 8. Just copied it over to my sdcard and installed it using the normal installer. Thanks man! It looks awesome.

Looks/works well but where's the update all button? Does it only appear only when there are more than one apps to update?

Works and looks great on Captivate and I also suggest using SGS Tools FTW.

I found an easy to flash signed zip somewhere that I used.

New market seems like a step backwards in some ways. I can see the need to reduce the refund time, but 15 minutes is nuts. Also, removing the tabs? That's just a mess.
Bring the tabs back, and make refund time 3 hours, and I'm a happy guy.
I also think it's a step backwards in a lot of ways. Yeah, that nice green design header looks cool... but it dominates the damn screen. Annoying!

Update: Tried to go back to original version via SGS tools restore script and lost Market completely.
Reinstalled new apk via droid explorer and it reappeared, and now search functionality works as expected.

Yea... but you can scroll around and lose the header once you start browsing.
Didn't have any issues after installing it - search feature worked.
Just downloaded straight onto my phone and used the base installer (no droid explorer, astro etc..) and it worked fine.
Also you get the "update all" on the top button under your downloads if you have multiple updates - which I did
Thanks again for this.

missing market....doh

i feel like an idiot after this but here it is. I tried replacing the android market with the new version. I placed the file, renamed Vending.apk, into system/apps. prior to that I removed the old market apk and placed it in another folder. needless to say the new version didn't work after a reboot, and I then tried reverting back with the old apk, and of course that doesn't work now either. so now I'm marketless
please don't tell me have to flash back to stock and reroot. it has to be a simple fix, right?
any help as always is appreciated
I used the non-themed one from this thread: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...05022-who-going-re-revisited-vending-apk.html
If I recall, I opened Astro and installed it with that app's installer. I think it even came up with an option to install, update or uninstall. If it wasn't Astro, it was Root Explorer as those are the only two apps I use to install apks.
Good luck.

Thanks. I'm using root explorer, and installation fails. It goes through the installation process, but just fails at the end. So I still don't know exactly what the problem is.
Well, in the world of android phones, it seems that usually means there's a version of vending.apk somewhere on the phone that needs to be removed.
Also, take a long look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872621
Just copying the Vending.apk in /system/app is normally fine.
Did you check the file permissions of the new file?
Needs to be at least rw-r--r--
After reboot you should see the market in your apps.

I checked permissions and all is set up correctly, and it is installed after all. However, when I open the market, it hangs for a moment and then closes.
I had the exact same thing happen a couple weeks ago... There may have been a solution, but I just did a Titanium backup, reset to factory settings, re-rooted, and restored Titanium. The whole process probably took less than what you've spent asking for a solution in this thread

it'll probably take me a bit longer than you to go through the rooting process again, but I guess it'll give me a chance to update my Nc to 1.01.
I'll still give it time for someone to come up with an answer that doesn't require rerooting

Need help with new market

I downloaded the new market apk then installed after renaming old one. Now when I open it, it asks me to accept terms. After I accept, it tries to open then just disappears. I tried doing the old market and now that does the same too. Cleared cache, same result. Any tips?

Try Clearing the Data, with Titanium Backup? Also which Market did you install 2.2.7? and is this on 2.2 or 2.1?
Tried titanium but it didn't work. The version is 2.2.6. I appreciate your help.
Have you tried using Logcat, and seeing what the error is there?
Lol what's logcat?
Logcat basically logs everything that your phone does. It's helpful when trying to figure out problems.

[Q] Contacts process force close after removing some bloatware

Would really appreciate some help.
Removed some bloatware via Titanium Backup, and of course, I got trigger happy.
process com.motorola.contacts (Contacts force closes)
process com.motorola.conversations (text messaging force closes)
So I have Root Explorer and got a hold of a system dump for Bionic.
I started by moving YahooContacts.apk (one of the apps I guess I shouldn't have uninstalled) back to the /system/app folder...but it doesn't show up anywhere as an installed app (just that the .apk was moved). If I try to actually select the .apk and try to install it says "Application did not Install" but the .apk IS moved.
Processes still don't work after moving.
I would appreciate any help, at this point I can't text or place calls. Thanks in advance, this forum helped me with the entire root process.
You cannot freeze/remove ANY of the other authenticator apps, it will cause contacts to freeze. I ran into that on the Droid 3.
First off there is no need to delete/remove, Freezing them accomplishes the same thing but most importantly it allows you to reverse what you have broken by Defrosting it. Do yourself a favor stop deleting and start freezing. If 16GB is not enough internal storage for you then you might consider an external HD from Seagate!!!!!!! LOL
I realize I made a big mistake. That's totally on me But it's in the past
Do I have any options to get this working again? I am definitely going to freeze apps in the future.
If I did delete an authenticator process, is there any way I can get those back? Would they be available through a system dump?
I believe that you need to make sure the permissions are correct after reinstalling an apk to the system/app folder. I've never done this, so I'll let you do the research. I've heard you can use root explorer to do this or a script with terminal emulator. Sorry I can't help more
I have the exact same problem, and am attempting to troubleshoot this issue on a different forum, however I am not allowed to post links but I'll try and keep you updated.
Edit: It's not a problem with permissions, I've made sure that they're correct with root explorer. It seems to be a Bionic-specific issue. I might just return it at this rate.
Thankfully, there's an unroot to use. I think im in the same boat. re-added all the yahoo related .apk and .odex and set permissions/owner, still nothing. Unroot and hope the Verizon dude is in a good mood!
Except now ADB is throwing "ERROR: ADB could not be granted root access" when trying to unroot
excellent.
Someone in the thread I was talking about had some success, its on droidforums dot net, droid bionic forum, bionic support, HELP! accidentally deleted IMSCServer from Droid Bionic thread. Maybe you can try something I haven't.
just do a factory reset thats what i had to do as I had the same problem.
I tried that, it didn't work... Did you actually get your system apps back? Did you do it through settings or the recovery menu?
i froze my bloat thats prob the difference and it was yahoo that caused the problem for me...

It really begs the question why anything with Yahoo is required by the system. Furthermore, why did they make it so frustratingly hard to reinstall system apps on the Bionic? Really disappointed in Motorola for this.
Here is the fix for Contacts, restore these files and set correct permission, reboot and presto Contacts fixed
That did it.. I have been looking for the YAHOO Contacts.apk file for 3 days with a bloody wortheless phone that I spent 300 shells on!
BTW I agree with Glimmerman, WHY DID YAHOO get involved in contacts? Talk about a sneaky way in integrate them.

Sorry if I'm newbtastic here but what do I do with these APKs and odex. I tried installing with ES explorer but it would not install. Am I supposed to move these files somewheres? /system/app then try install ? Thanks

lol yep my girlfriend did this yesterday fortunately i have a bionic too so i just pulled the files from my phone and pushed to hers.
damn you yahoo.
also, apparently go contacts EX will 'fix' the problem (you must use their app however)

Suffering from limited Market visibility? Try LCD Density

I couldn't find a separate thread on the latest Market visibility issue, but it's discussed in several threads. So I created this one to be easily found and hopefully help some people.
EDIT: Check this thread with more updated information.
The Issue
After upgrading or making changes, many people are not able to see all market apps that they did before, or several appear to be incompatible.
The Solution
It seems that the Market uses LCD density as a filtering item. Changing the Nook lcd density to 160 brings back compatibility.
The Options
(1) If you are on CM7, upgrade to at least the latest stable (10-12-2011) which includes a fix for the resolution.
(2) Get the LCD Resolution app from the Market and change the density to 160 (check "Always Set on Boot" option). Then clear data from the Market app via app manager/App Info or Settings. You will need to accept google T&C's again when you next open up Market. Some people have reported that they need to clear data several times before it shows all apps. App added for those that need to sideload.
(3) Edit build.prop to set the density to 160. Then clear the Market data as in step 2.
(4) Use an app like Titanium Backup to uninstall the marker updater app. Then uninstall the market update and clear the data/cache in the market app and reboot.
I'm not running CM7, so that's out.
I can't get anything at all to display in the market, so the LCD Resolution app is out.
How do I go about editing the build.prop file to change the LCD density by hand?
EDIT: Likely a dumb question but I'll ask anyway... The NC is the 2nd device that's registered to my same gmail account. That's not causing issues, is it?
You missed an option. Use an app like Titanium Backup to uninstall the marker updater app. Then uninstall the market update and clear the data/cache in the market app and reboot.

Well, if I could get access to ANY applications in the Marketplace, I'd be happy to give that a try...
I get a message that says "No matching content in Android Market." when I start up the market. I searched for Titanium Backup, but it said "There are no matches in Android Market for the search: titanium backup", and presented me with one possible app to install - OI File Manager
EDIT: OK, I've been playing around a bid with ADB, and I can rummage around the guts of my phone, but I can't get it to recognize the NC. I'm on WinXP, do I need to get some drivers to get it to recognize the NC? I've turned on the WirelessADB that comes as a part of the MN package, and ADB still doesn't seem to recognize it.
What am I missing????

1. If you have someone to send you the app (sorry, I don't have it), copy it to your NC then sideload from there.
2. Using either Root Explorer or File Expert to modify the build.prop.
Do some search on the topic to know what need to be done.
3. I don't think it's a problem but again, it's just me.

1. If you keep getting that issue, I suggest doing a complete re-install again.
2. ADB is a pain and isn't for everyone. ADB via USB needs SDK and usb driver. ADB over wireless is another issue, someone says it's too easy, I can never get mine to work.
3. Which CM7 version is currently on your NC? PC shouldn't have problem recognizing the NC if you turn on the USB Mass Storage feature.
OK, so I managed to connect adb to my NC, I pulled the build.prop file, and opened it in eclipse.
Here's what it says:
# ro.sf.lcd_density=240
ro.sf.widthpixels=600
ro.sf.heightpixels=1024
ro.sf.lcd_density.xdpi=169.33333
ro.sf.lcd_density.ydpi=169.33333
Looks like the density numbers are close. Do I need to change them both to exactly 160?
thanks!
FreeMan
I could be totally off on this, but I finally got the steps (in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027&page=156) to work when I cleared the data from the Market in Nook Color Tools. The instructions say to clear the cache in the Market, and clear data in Google Framework. I was mucking around a lot, doing things a little differently each time, but I know that the time that it worked was the first time I cleared data in the Market in addition to clearing the cache.
Of course, once it was working, it updated Flash since it had cleared my preference NOT to update flash...

You can uninstall the market update and clear the data/cache and then launch the market. That would give you temporary access to the old market.

Thanks, no, I didn't comment it out, it was that way when I opened it.
I can adb pull the file & edit it, but I can't put it back because the file is RO. I tried
Code:
chmod 777 build.prop
but it won't let me do that - says it's a read only system file. I know that, I want to change it!!!
I don't have an app on the NC to change the permissions on the file, and I can't get one because I have a very limited market. Catch-22...
How do I go about changing the permissions so I can overwrite the file? I thought that's what I was supposed to be able to do with adb.
EDIT: If I clear data for the Market, then reboot, when I go back in to the Market, I have to accept permissions, and I get some access to the market, including search. I searched for TB & installed it, so I now have that available to me!! (Yay for progress!) Any other critical apps I should install this way to simplify the job getting this fixed?
Is their a way to change only the market to have 160 dpi and everything else 161? The way i have my nook set up it looks bad with 160 but i love the look of the new market
Edit: I got it thanks
Glad you got it working, can you share with the rest of the class?
Sure, Change your dpi to 160 then clear the market data and reboot. After you reboot change your dpi back to 161 DON'T clear the market data then reboot. Now your market is still at 160 and everything else is 161 dpi.
Edit: It goes away after awhile, looking for a new solution.
I'm confused. Still having trouble with market access...quite a number of apps (like Facebook, for instance) don't show up in the market at all. I installed the app mentioned above, and my LCD density was already at 160.
So my question is - does this mean the market access problem is something else? Or is it that that many apps really aren't compatible with the Nook anymore?
-Brian
After changing my dpi to 160 and clearing market data facebook and other apps show up and are compatible.

You don't mention your setup, so it's possible that you could have updated to CM7 with the correct resolution but would still be left with the old market cache data.
In any case, try and clear out the Market cache and see if that helps.

I am out of ideas, i cleared the market cache then refalashed CM7 7.1 Stable and the 20110828 gapps to go with it and i still have the bad market.
Did you say you got it working on the top this page?
What now?
