Downloading question - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, need some help here...
when i'm downloading movies from the net, my phone will go into standby and download will stop...maximum on my phone is 30mins (galaxy s)
how to keep the phone just on?

That is probably a good thing IMO doesn't your phone get hot when it's working that hard? Why not download on a computer and either stream or just copy to phone....i think this constant downloading un raring would significantly reduce the life of your phone

Make sure the Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to never.
Hopefully that will help.

3G will eat up your bandwidth
Settings>Wireless and Network>Wi-Fi settings>(click the menu button)>Advanced>Wi-Fi sleep policy>Never

..or go open your SPAREPARTS app and set your WIFI policy there..
the post above + mine now gives you 2 options.
now be a happy camper!

N1 WiFi policy

Hey folks,
Despite the fact I defined my wifi never to go off it still seems to be disconnected after some time while the device is in a sleep mode. I see that it's also not switched on by apps needed to be updated online, f.e. apps like weather forecast stay not updated.
I use wifi analyzer to manage my wifi.
Any thoughts how can I make wifi to be on after it's already connected while n1 is in a sleep mode?
Thanks.

Data and WIFI...

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if when I connect to the internet using a WIFI connection (whether its one I own or a public one)...does that count as "data usage" on my bill?
The reason I ask is because I'm on tmobile and a most of you probably already know, they lowered the cap to 5gbs of data a month and after you go past that limit you'll still have data connection but it'll be super slow (most likely EDGE speeds) until your new billing cycle begins. I'm currently at 4.8gbs already (watching youtube videos, using the internet, xda, etc) so I want to know if I can use an open WIFI connection without worrying about going past 5gbs.
Thanks.
no it wont count as data usage.

make sure you go to Wifi advance settings and select "Wifi sleep policy" accordingly (I suggest to put it on "Never")
If you don't do so, Android will turn off Wifi and switch to mobile data when your screen is off or not plugged in.

Thank you, I'll make sure I do that then.
note that the wifi sleep policy will only work if you are running FRG83 (2.2.1) unless you are VERY lucky to not experience the bug on 2.2
edit: nvm just saw you're running CM 6.1 ^^
mobile data
also if you really want to not use any of your mobile data you can go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile network settings and turn off data, then you will only use data over wifi and won't use any more data
Use app 3G Watchdog to monitor & manage your 3G data.

[Q] Data useage and selecting wifi

Hey all,
Dumb question here but first android phone so need your help.
I only have 500mb of data allowance with vodafone UK and just recently got a text from them saying im near my limit for the month.
Being at home with the phone I use an app called quick settings to disable mobile data and then enable wifi.
But just used network monitor app and it says that I've not used any wifi.
Can anyone help with what Im doing wrong as dont want to go over the allowance. Coming from a BB never had this issue as they ZERO apps worth downloading
Cheers
I use Network Counter.
If you want to know how much different programs waste, you can look at TrafficStats.

Thanks will give both a go. My worrying thing is android market doesnt seem to use the wifi when downloading even with mobile data disabled.
Maybe your wifi sleep policy is wrong, go to settings - network & wireless and go to wifi/wireless settings and tap lower left touch button at bottom of phone and select advanced once in that menu you should see wifi sleep policy select that and set it to never, it means the wifi is always on even when phone is locked. Hope this helps.

@stelo81
Thanks for the 2 programs suggested. Seems network monitor didn't show anything correctly.
With wifi on and data disabled your 2 suggestions show wifi kicking in.
Just gotta remember to switch on before downloading!!!
Thanks again

if you have the option to disable the BMPS "Beacon Mode Power Save"
yes will work
what that setting actualy change?
Made no difference for me. Still max 65mbps on the N4 as opposed to my N10 that gets 270mbps.

disables the BMPS "Beacon Mode Power Save" and improve the wifi speed !!
Doing this didn't really improve much for me for Wifi speed but it did cause bad wake locks..
it caused a Suspend services Wake lock pretty bad and drained my battery fast. tried several reboots and it always came back.
reset the Wifi CFG file back to 1 and reboot and then wake lock went away.
I just did this using ES explorer (Enabling Root Explorer and Mount File System as writable), now the Wifi will NOT turn on.
I even reverted the setting back to 1, still cannot turn wifi on.
How do I fix it???? Please help!

Phew, figured it out.
ES explorer also changed the permission, set it back to r--r--r and can turn it back on now.
I just realized how bad wifi speed is on this phone. My busted screen beat up epic touch is 4-5 times faster on wifi speed tests. I guess i know why my vonage calls suck sometimes. Does anyone actually get full speed wifi or are all of us suffering from this issue?

The wifi radio in the phone is limited to 65 Mbits. That change won't make it become a multistream radio (this is a hardware limitation), it will merely change the way power management is handled, which can have an effect on the throughput (not the connection rate).

Where did you read that the radio is limited to 65Mbits?
I get over 70Mbps when I'm connected to my Linksys EA6500 router...

65/70/72 is all the same: single stream, 1x1 configuration.
What I'm saying is it's not a dual stream 135/150 Mbits.

You are correct sir, my bad... I misinterpreted what you were trying to say initially and completely overlooked what you said about dual steam. You're right, none of these "tweaks" can fix that.
I wish I could swap the wireless from my N10 over onto my N4...

If wifi is enabled it should connect automatically as long as you have previously connected to it and are in range(obviously). When wifi is enabled it scans periodically for wifi networks in the area.

Tasker can do it based on time or location and I think there's a couple others as well... I just use tasker because I use it for a lot of things, but I also just leave Wi-Fi on
