Hey im just about to root my galaxy s so I can apply a lagfix and just want to clarify im doing the best thing
I am on version 2.2 froyo JP3
I'm going to be using super one click root and oclf
Is that the best option for me to root and lagfix??
I personally prefer z4root (check the dev section). It's run as an app on your phone vs connecting your phone to your PC and running the desktop app. Unfortunately, z4root doesn't seem to work on all firmware versions while super one click appears to cover them all. You'll have to check if it works on yours.
An easier solution might be to simply flash a custom kernel that includes root and a lag fix. There's a ton of them in the dev forum. I've personally run SpeedMod and it includes what you're looking for.
Good luck.

Hi,
I'v had a look for this in the forum but not found any infomation on this.
Has any one been able to root the new JPY update that take the Samsung galaxy to Froyo 2.2.1?
If you how did you do?
Dude it takes a few seconds to use the search function: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Also SuperOneClick works just fine.
i rooted my phone using z4root

You have 2 options:
1) SuperOneClick has worked for me on 2.2.1 where others have failed. It's a desktop app you install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
2) Flash a custom ROM that's already rooted. The advantage to this is it also includes a fix for 3e recovery that will let you flash update.zip files from your phone (required for some apps). There's a few kernels out there that do this and everyone has their preference. I personally use SpeedMod. Check the developers page for instructions, downloadable file, tutorial, etc. This is the option that I personally would do.

or just flash a custom kernel ie chainfire cf kernel.
how can you root using z4 on 2.2.1 when you cant even install the app? after updated to 2.2.1... the z4 root is useless even if its downloaded straight from xda and transfer to the phone.
Hello,
First i used z4root to root my sgs 2.2 but since i updated to 2.2.1 i cant root it anymore.
Anybody got a solution?

SuperOneClick.

Desktop app that seems to work with EVERY firmware version I've tried.
Alternatively, flash one of the custom kernels from the i9000 dev forum. For example, I've flashed SpeedMod which includes root as well as the recovery fix.
Yeah, I met the same problem, once I upgraded to official 2.2.1 JPY. Unfortunately, since Z4root doesn't work anymore, there is no easy way to root it without computer.
Seems like super one click is the best option so far.
Plus, you might be aware as well, adfree can't support i9000 2.2.1. :-(

Thank you, with SuperOneClick it worked .
I'm Root again.
I could not get SuperOneClick working on my Dutch SGS. I regained root on 2.2.1 with CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.
Just pushed it in using Odin, no problems so far.
I don't want to hear what "might" work
I want to know what WILL work - as in 100%
Are there are Bell Canadian i9000m users with Froyo (2.2) who rooted their phones ? (I am not into flashing etc. I just want to root so I can back up my apps with Titanium Pro THEN be able to flash)
Please for the love of god help me
Try (one click root ),i think you can find it on android market
I know you said you are not into flashing, but last time I had tried I had trouble using utilities to root my phone on froyo. (SaskTel I9000m)
I found it by far the easiest to flash the speedmod kernel via odia to get root. You can flash the kernel and no other part of the phone if that is what you want, and still gain root, and IMHO the best add-on feature there is, backlight notification!

So let me get this straight, I would still keep everything, all my apps, my current build (2.2) and everything else -- but I would gain a new "kernel" and root ?
do you have any links or instructions ?
Hi Just got a Galaxy. and i ran the firmware update with has updated the phone to version 2.3.3 build bujv9. phone is unlocked
I have been looking at rooting as lag fix seems to improve speed a large amount.
I done a benchmark and got 885. but after rooting with voodoo it says you can get 2100 benchmark.
But it says i have to have version 2.3.4 to root phone. My newest update is 2.3.3. So i am not sure if i should root or need to. or can with the version i have.
Please can someone advise on best way to go. Sorry for long question. been used to htc phone for last year.
Thanks
Go to dev section, search for chainfire root kernel, dl ext 4 app for lagfix.
Once yr rooted with cwm recovery, you'll be able to choose any custom rom/kernel combo you want.
Happy days.

Hi
Thanks for replies.
Think i will root phone. Really love the Galaxy. miles better than my desire was.
But Samsung do not do much as regards themes and widgets like HTC.
I do get a bit of lag but phone runs pretty good with gingerbread.
HTC desire has nothing on this phone. and i can see the screen clearly when outside in the sun. desire was useless outside. And i got 32Gb of space now.
HI
My phone has the gingerbread rom BUJV9 Installed.
I am not sure what i have to use to root my phone with this rom installed.
I have been looking everywhere to find a straight answer. But cannot find one.
So not a clue which cf-root to use or if i have to downgrade first. Or if i can use any rooting tool.
Any ideas please.
Cheers
You can use also Hardcore kernel for that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134975
Easy steps:
- download a rooted kernel for 2.3.4 (I prefer Hardcore or CF-root)
- open Odin and check "PDA" and browse to kernel file
- put your phone in download mode and connect it to computer
- pres Start button
Nice guides here for flashing with odin and rooting :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12979275&postcount=1613
Hi
Thanks for advise. rooted phone ok now. Got superuser working.
Just need to find a super fast rom now.
Are a lot of good custom roms and kernels here and every developers deserve at least a thanks from our side.
Personally, now I prefer S.U.R.F.A.C.E. rom with Hardcore kernel. Good battery life, fast and customizable.
In my opinion Froyo ..JS8 was the best and now Gingerbread XXJVR is the best, at least until now.
Cheers for advice.
I had HTC desire before so used to rooting with them. So now rooted will soon get used to flashing. It's just the first bit. But in the end Galaxy was peasy compared to HTC. And Galaxy is miles better phone.
Hi all,
I have a notification from AT&T that I can now update my Froyo Captivate to Gingerbread.
I am currently rooted (Even if rooted, I am not using any custom roms.. and I don't seem to need any.. I am happy with what has come with Cappy. I rooted it just to sideload the apps as it comes disabled in Froyo by default)
My question is: If I use the Kies and update my Cappy to gingerbread, will I be able to sideload the apps as I do it now?
As I am rooted, will it create any problem updating it to gingerbread using Kies?
I just updated to gingerbread yesterday using kies mini, and after I did the "Allow Installation from non-Market Sources" was visible. I think thats all you need for sideloading. You will lose the Root, but like you said you don't need it.
I'm not sure if beeing rooted will affect kies, I was on a custom rom so I used a oneclick back to stock and then kies
thanks t-roth for the response. How is your experience with new stock GB?
Does anyone knows if I am rooted, I can directly go to the Stock Captivate GB using the Kies Mini

If your rooted phone can connect to Kies, you can install the update.
Thanks Bruce. I will try that out..
Probably the last question. Am I going to see huge performance change moving from Froyo to GB?
I was rooted and Kies had no issue with my phone being so. It left me root-less after the fact, and I felt naked. The number one reason you SHOULD want to be rooted is to get rid of the freaking still-born garbage AT&T thinks we should endorse and like. As far as actual side-loading...I was unable to get the Sideload Wonder Machine to work. But I didn't sweat it because I quickly sought Root. Some of the more powerful utilities require root, but for the casual user, you probably won't want to be messing about in system folders anyway.
You say you "quickly sought root", but did you find it. I tried the 2.3.5 upgrade and as noted it left me able to load non-market apps ok but I was root-less. I haven't been able to root the KK4 upgrade and since I live and die with my Root Explorer and TI Backup I NEED the root. Z4 Root wouldn't work and neither would any of the 3 versions of Super 1-Click that I have (1.6.5, 2.1.1 & 2.3.1). If you were successful, what did you use?
I think it depends on how you enabled the side loading of apps. I'm not on the official gingerbread but that's what I think.

use the newest version of super 1 click root.. duh.
or look up the fugu mod root method. odin flash fugu root kernel, let it bootloop once, then odin flash your stock kernel again... or a cwm based kernel for your android version (kk4)
