Help please. Clockwork recovery not working and cannot flash roms - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been flashing the newest roms since i got my captivate back in august and i have had no major problems. i have been running assonance 5.0 since it released and wanted to flash assonance 5.2. I do the same flashing routine ive done 30+ times yet the rom wont flash. i have tried flashing back to assonance 5.0 yet still no results. has anyone experienced this?

Have you tried flashing back to stock and starting from scratch?

More details. What us happening

I have flashed back to stock 2 times. After choosing the rom in rom manager the phone goes to the recovery screen. I hit reinstall packages and it reboots. Phone is rooted. Ive done the process 30+ times no problem. Still no luck flashing a rom. Can't reboot into clockwork recovery either.

I am having the same problem.
I just fixed it, after you choose reinstall packages, it will put you back into the default recovery screen (it did for me) I chose reinstall packages again, and it worked. I like the new version, it talks during the installation (dono if it was ROM manager or what but the first time I did this it didn't talk, it was probably cognition though)

Yep. Most times with ClockworkMod you have to choose reinstall packages twice.
You were hearing voodoo voices, just the lagfix that DG uses in Cognition.

edit: lol, nevermind, just read that you fixed it.

Man thank you so much!
Ive been rebooting my phone over and over and have reflashed through odin like 10 times, I was going nuts trying to figure out wtf was wrong with it and why it wasnt going into clockwork recovery mode, never thought to do it twice.

[Q] I must be retarded ... need help flashing a custom rom

hey guys Im a new to the whole rooting and flashing custom roms thing. I love my N1 and I figured it was time to start playing with it more then the usual out of the box customizations.
I rooted the phone using the one click root app:
(cant post the link since Im a new user)
and then installed the Rom Manager.
I then installed the ClockworkMod recovery like it says to do.
Then I performed a Backup of the Current Rom using the Rom Manager
then Downloaded CyanogenMod 6.0.0-RC2 along with the Google Apps add on.
once the download completed it says do you want to do a wipe and also asks option to back up current rom. I checked both boxes and the phone boots into recovery mode.
Now this is where Im confused on what to do. At first I wasnt sure it the Rom manager would auto load the new rom, so I let it sit for like 10 min and realized it wasnt doing anything. Then I pressed the power button and volume at this point it gives me 3 options ..
1) reboot
2) Wipe
3) load update.zip
First I did a reboot ... which did nothing but re boot the phone, then I applied the update.zip and it failed and then I went to the Cyanogen Mod wiki page
on there is said to: "Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset. "
so I did that and then tried to install the update.zip ... which failed ... and basically erased my phone like the noob I am
So can someone please help me and tell me what Im doing wrong? also I installed titanium back up this time around to back up my apps.
Sounds like ClockworkMod Recovery did not flash. Try flashing it again in Rom Manager.
Should have been posted in Q&A
Thank you. Ill try that.
Sorry for not posting in Q&A as i didnt know about it ... Im new here so please forgive me.
Might be Clockworkmod ROM Manager...
I had all sort of problems with 2.1.0.5 and can't use any of the backups I created with it (they just hang when I try to restore them).
Everything seems OK with 2.1.0.6 though...

I reflashed Clockworkmod and that fixed it ... it flash the CyanogenMod rom, but once I was on there the radio wouldnt work, to I went back in re flashed the recovery.

You had issues too? I couldn't restore any of my backups the other day as well.
Yeah, I was having random problems with my backups... took me a while to realize it was only my newer backups.
Finally worked out that it was the version of ROM Manager. Older versions work great, as does the latest...

CM requires the 4.06.00.12_7 radio. Go to settings - about and look at the baseband version, that is your radio version. Also keep in mind most ROM's will not setup your APN, you will have to do that manually. I thought CM did, but I have not used it in a while. I am addicted to Enomther's ROM.

[Q] Brand new captivate with no recovery/download mode by buttons?

So I had a cappy for all of 1 week before the ota update a few days ago came out. It bricked my phone so i took it back to AT&t and got a new one, only to find that I cant use button combinations to get into DL or recovery modes (my original cappy could use button combos). Has anyone else gotten a cappy that cant use button combos to get to the recovery mode?
Oh and before everything was stock, except for the "one click lag fix" from the app market, which i used to root as well as EXT4 i think.
I have heard that the new Cognition rom has done just the opposite for people. People that had the Captivate without the button combination working got it working after the flash. It must not be in the device itself but in the kernel. Flashing the Cognition rom is done through Clockwork, so even if you do not want to keep it (which I do not know why you wouldn't, as Cognition is GREAT), you can flash it to get to whatever kernel you really want. Please, experts, correct me if I am wrong.
thank you! ill try Cognition. ill post back here if it doesnt help me.
Don't you have to be rooted to flash with ROM manager? How would you root the phone without recovery mode?

Not really, you can ADB reboot recovery after loading the recovery-update.zip (renaming to update.zip) and cognition or whatnot *.zip into \sdcard. Then reinstall packages and it will load Clockwork recovery and allow you to install ZIP from SD Card.
the new OTA will fix the 3 button issue as well. if you are 100% stock this update should work.
ahhh i wish you had posted that a couple hours earlier! I just rooted my captivate and flashed coginative. can i still get back to 100% stock? i have a backup of the stock rooted rom. does un-rooting it count as 100% stock?
Plenty of info on this forum use the search button imo if you don't have button combo.. Take out back your playing with fire

Try this to go back to stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Follow the directions EXACTLY!
If you can't get the OTA update of JH7 to work, go here and do it manually.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790080
when you were factory fresh. You should have done OTA. it would have worked flawless ly.
if you are only root right now, you can still TRY OTA update. Worked for my friend. assuming you dont have anything else like lag fix etc.
If you have done a lot of stuff to your phone. Then use Odin3 to go back to stock (google odin3).
Then update, more then likely, it will fail at 50% like it did for me but it made the 3 button recovery start working. so that was the plus to it.
Then I just flashed Cog 2.1.
voila.

Back to stock stuck on AT&T logo

I decided to root my phone and try some ROMS last night on my Captivate. Love it by the way except one problem that I can not seem to figure out.
Before I did any flash I used ROM Manager to take 2 backups of my stock ROM and also used Titanium to backup all user apps and data.
Everytime I try to go back to stock and the phone reboots after recovery mode I get the AT&T logo and it never goes anywhere.
How do I get back to stock?
THANK!
If you are trying to restore stock through nancroid backup that won't work. You need to use odin.
What build is your phone? You can find it under your battery, something between 1006-1012
It is 1012. I thought you could just restore from those backups to get back to stock.
I have never used odin before. How do I go about that?
Thanks!
I can not find a good download for Odin. Could somebody provide please?
Thanks!
With your build you need to be careful what odin you use
You wavy to follow this

Clockwork does not restore kernel and modem. You are stuck at at&t screen because your system is ext 4 used on roms, and your nandroid is rfs. Long and short it won't work
So.... I am a bit confused now. Is there even a way to get back to stock at this point?
The link I posted
Your stock is jh7, odin One click is jf6. The procedure laid out in the link will get you back to jh7, although it takes a couple steps.
As long as you can get into recovery you can probably reflash any rom you have on your sd
Yikes thats a tall order to get back. Thought it would be more simple. So it is easy getting to a point to flash ROMS... Not so easy going back.
I'm also stuck in the same vicious cycle as we type.
I got 2 different stock rom backups and a cognition backup and can't get nothing to restore factory. I got premium ROM Manager. I can get into 2 different recovery screens. 1 from the Clockwork v2.5.1.3-voodoo lagfix and 1 using the update.zip on my root. Can't restore anything that gets me past the ATT logo.

What is your build number, under battery
Between 1006-1012
I don't see a 1006-1012 anything. Where exactly would it be listed under the battery ??? ON the battery ? my phone is 3 days old.
EDIT: oh I think its a 1010 ...I think I found it
Thanks for the help by the way.
Link listed earlier in thread
Yeah it is the same for me.... Sucks!
And I can not download any of the files in that link because I am at work and those hosting sites are blocked for us. :-(

Have you tried this
Phone off
Hold volume up and down and power
Let go when at&t comes up
Should be green recovery
Select install zip from sd
Choose zip
Select rom file that is saved on your sd, any you may of tried
Confirm
If your lucky maybe you can flash the rom
Uhh ??? Somehow from the recovery mode I just re-installed Cognition 3.04 back on my phone by browsing to the ROM.zip an installing it. I have to charge my phone for a few but I'll definitely come back and tell how I did it after a while. I think it was by browsing to cognitionv3.zip from 1 of the recovery menus insead of going to the update.zip. That beats the hell out of going through all the steps of going back to stock.
Thanks for the help.
EDIT:
Yeah somewhat like above post, only I had the Cognition (red) recovery menu and I went to install .zip and browsed to the cognitionv3.zip on my sd and installed it. *BLAM* back to Cognitionv3.04 I'll work with that till I got more time to mess with the other.

Yep I have tried that. Or at least I guess....
I go into the recovery screen but the problem is the only zip files I have are my custom ROMS. I did a complete backup with ROM Manager of the stock ROM before flashing however it did not create a zip file, it created a folder which contains everything that was backed up. I have tried to restore from that but when I do and the phone restarts it sticks on the AT&T white logo screen.
I am not saying restore stock, I am saying flash a rom. it may get you a working phone
Oh yeah I have done that just fine. I am using Cognition.
I am just trying to find my path back to stock.

Exactly, If you flashed a ROM on the phone the ROM is still there. Just use the recovery mode and choose "install a zip from sd" then go to "choose a zip from sd" then it will let you browse the sd for the .zip(rom) you just had. (not stock). It should be successful. Worked for me.
At least you will have a working phone and you can then look into going stock once you've read up a little more on it.
Just trying to help.
EDIT: oh, OK, I myself was in a panic and had just found that possible.
No problem. Thank you for the help!
I was thinking that when I did the backup with ROM Manager that it was creating a ROM version of the stock so I could flash back. Guess not though.

[Q] CM7 Test Only Booting to Recovery

First up, I haven't posted here much, but I definitely don't consider myself useless.
I'm always flashing (with Odin and CWM zip flashes) different ROMS and experimenting.
I know that I can flash back to stock/Darkys Resurrection etc if I want to get my phone working again, but I'd really like to experiment more with CM7.
The issue I'm having is that after I thought I followed all of the install steps, when I reboot, the phone just keeps going back to recovery, not booting the ROM.
The first time I was coming from Darkys 9.3 (with EXT4 on all partitions inc. System). I didn't disable lagfix first, it didn't tell me to in CM7 instructions, so didnt think it was needed. I was also already using 500Hz Speedmod, so I didn't flash the Kernel first.
I had no issues with any steps, but after flashing cm7-galaxys-initial-20110220.zip, wiping and rebooting, I just ended up back in recovery.
So I thought I would do it all again, from the start. I reflashed Darkys 9.2 Resurrection through Odin. This time I disabled Lagfix. I then installed the speedmod kernel that comes with the CM7 package.
Then I followed the steps. Again, I land in recovery, and again rebooting the phone just puts me back in recovery.
Any help?

EVERY time.
I made sure that I either powered down or battery pulled (depending where I was when I needed to go to recovery). Then I three-buttoned into recovery.
Uh... of course you're going to mess up your phone if you don't disable the lagfix... ALWAYS disable the lagfix before you flash, no matter what.

Yeah, but I've retried the installation. Using Darkys Resurrection, I went back to having a fully function 2.2 ROM again. Disabled lagfix, and then followed the steps again. Same outcome.
dumb ? #1 You don't have your usb plugged in when you do this?
Reason I ask, is that on some HTC models, this happened if you left the usb connected.
Also it happens on 'certain' versions of CWM, V3 i think, worth a thought.
Also try coming in from a different kernel, maybe speedmod, your constant appears to be darky

We'll see how I go. I can't remember now if I had USB plugged in or not.
I'm downloading stock JPY now, and I'll go from there. See how we go!
So I just did it all again, starting from a stock JPY. And so far so good. Seems either Darky's was the problem, OR I had a USB cable plugged in (which I don't think I did)
Yep.
I'm now getting into CM7.
Everything seems great, though I can't get wifi working. But that's for the CM7 thread!

[Q] Quick Question Regarding Odin, ADB and Flashing

Hello all! Long time lurker, first time poster! I'm on the verge (halfway through actually) of flashing my first custom rom: Serendipity 6.3. However I have run into a couple of issues that may or not be a problem.
1) I successfully used Odin 1click to flash back to stock from the official Froyo update when I went to master clear however at roughly 95% completion (On the Odin download bar) I got some sort of runtime error that had to force close Odin while the factory reset was occurring on the phone. Thankfully the phone rebooted and appeared to have wiped the Internal SD successfully. Was wondering if I should just re-download Odin if I plan on master clearing again. I abused the search function for the Cappy forums but couldn't find a solution to this specific problem.
2) After the whole Odin debacle I just decided to go on ahead with flashing Serendipity but ran into another problem... I cant reboot into recovery whereas I could prior to flashing back to stock... So I guess my question here is: Is it ok to use ADB reboot recovery to reinstall the packages that Serendipity uses as it's update.zip? Or should I download figure out how to use the other version of Odin that flashes the 3 button recovery?
I apologize for the length and possible redundancy and really dont want to step on any toes here but I have been wading through the sea of material (via the search function I promise!) on here and just get bogged down by the sheer volume of information out there on these multiple subjects...
If anyone could help me clarify any of this I would greatly appreciate it! You have truly taken me from wondering what rooting meant to beginning to experiment with custom roms! This site is truly a great resource!
Flash back to stock agin. Then try rooting it. Next install "rom manger" from market and install captivate update.zip . Next reboot into recovery (volume buttons plus power and release when see at&t screen) install packages then on clockwork manger recovery screen instal zip from sd and install your rom. But to hard reset dial *2767*3855#. But reflash stock sup don't have problems when flash your rom. Also cognition is as good rom if like stock look. P.m. me if need anything else.
