My refurbished N1 randomly reboots and loses SD Card - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My orignal N1 had problems with a pink tinge on all photos, erratic touch (surprise!) and very slow wifi speed (it could take up to 30s to load a page from a high speed wifi connection).
I finally sick of this and so called HTC and requested a RMA. Since Ididn't want to be without my phone I chose the option where they send you a refurb, put a hold on your CC and wait for you to send one back.
Anyway got the replacement phone, put the SIM card and SD card in and sync'ed it back with Google. Most of the apps installed okay and there was a firmware push to 2.2.1 [As an aside, I lost data on most of my apps so the Google sync doesn't seem to sync the data in applications]
The new phone seemed to work better with faster browsing and hardly a trace of the pink tinge but now randomly reboots. What's worse is when it reboots, it goes into a reboot loop and the only way out is to remove the battery.
Also when it reboots, often it cannot find the SD Card and I have to reboot again.
Finally when I move apps from Phone memory to the SD Card I get a message error in moving application (or words to that effect) but I can try again and it works. The SD Card is fine and I have done a CHKDSK under Windows to make sure it has no errors.
So I called up HTC and they are going to send yet another one. I sure hope this one works okay else yet another RMA.
What sort of QA do HTC do anyway?

Just for s---s and giggles did you try backing up sd card, reformatting with sdformatter outside the phone then copying data back onto card. If you do use full erase option on sd formatter.
Of course, if you have an ext you will need to repartition before copying data back to card.

No because just powering the phone off and on again gets the card back. So it's unlikely the card is faulty.

Just a thought--these phones don't seem to do the logical

Maybe I will crack open my Nexus S and try that out instead

There ya go!
Don't look for an sd card though

Storage card pretents to be empty when it is not?

I am running Duttys March 4 Dual Touch, No Cube on my Kaiser. Probably unrelated, but yesterday every thing on my 6GB Sandisk Storage Card disappeared
About 750mb of data! The card appears empty in File Manager until I select "Show all files" when a single folder called WMDRM containing a single 132kb file shows up.
If I go to Settings> System> Memory The storage card shows 738mb used and 5084mb free. So it appears the data is there but inaccessible. If I browse the card from activeSync the same is also the case. Properties tell be 738mb used, but nothing is visibel except the single small file.
Any ideas on how I might be able to get it back? Really want to get my data back....

You may have scrambled your files.
Put it into a USB card reader and try to access it on your PC - if it looks the same there, try looking at it with a good file undeleter like Fix-It Utilities or Norton, see if you can recover anything.
I just had a laptop hard drive fail on my last week, so I feel your pain. Fortunately I had fairly recent backups so I didn't lose too much.
Makes me think of someone's tagline I saw once:
"There are 2 kinds of people in this world, those with a backup plan in place, and those that have not yet had a catastrophic disk failure"
Good luck!
Search this site for SD CARD2
Most likely the issue is cause by the infamous Win CE bug.
If I have not posted the solution here, do a google search in the Web, you'll find detailed instructions.
[Edit] Your data is there, so don't do anything foolish, or else you'll have to reinstall everything. The SD CARD2 issue is very simple to resolve.
Thanks guys. Had a look as SD CARD2 threads and they did not seem to relate to me. Ran Pocket Mechanic and its Scandisk feature on the Card and it reported loads of "lost clusters". I then ran it again with "Automatically fix errors" and "discard lost clusters" and it merrily removed them all. So now my 738mb of data has gone. Rats. Oh well I will just start again a fresh and hope it does nto happen again.
i feel your pain. it's happened to me quite a few times on my XDA II, and once recently on my Kaiser when i damaged the mini-usb port (entirely my fault) and it started writing corrupted data onto the card when copying files over through activesync
I've since taken to keeping copies of my card data in addition to backups of my device. i usually carry 2 cards with me, one backup and one "current"; and i also keep backups of my SD cards on my PC, just in case.
Strangely, After a few hours most of the data on the card spontaneously returned. One minute it was empty and the next it had all the folders and files back again. Albeit with a lot of lost clusters and a heap of files reported as 32kb. Was able to recover a lot of the stuff and have got another 2GB card to use in the mean time.
Is there much point in reformatting the card? From experience, does anyone know if formatting might "fix" whatever caused it to lose clusters and go bad? Am considering sending it back for a warranty claim but how can I ascertain if it is actaully faulty once I reformat it.
Reformat or replace?

I have had USB flash memory seem to be faulty, especially when trying to transfer large amounts of data for a backup - then rebooted and re-inserted and had readable data. I would try reformatting, and then back up often and watch it like a hawk. Or, if it wasn't too expensive, just discard. Or, try to get a replacement - I did get an SD card replaced once at N/C because it wouldn't read in anything I tried it in, and I complained and was heard.
I bought a replacement 2GB panasonic microSD in Japan a couple of days back. (Always find the memory quality excellent there.) Their eyes were out on stalks when they saw my 6GB card. Must not be wideley available there yet. Anyway I plan to use the 2gb for the time being to rule out hardware and software causes. Have reformatted the suspect 6gb card. Will soon start using it again with everything backed up to the max and hopefully the problem will not return. I have been flashing a few different ROMs. Because of this I am becoming ever more reliant on the Storage Card for system recovery. So cant afford to have a dodgy one.
Hi, folks.
I use a HTC cruise with WM6.1 from Bepe. This morning, all files from my 8GB miniSD card just vanisehd!!! I removed the card from the phone and tried to access the files in windows with a sd card reader, but no file was seen. Although, there was only 3,5GB free!!! The files weren't there, but they kept occupying space. I used this software to recover the files. Awesome! They were all there, except for the ones stored in root. Also,I had to rename all root folders, the subfolders were OK. I just had to filter files marked as "good" and then copied them to my HD. The phone is working as usual, but I can't explain why exactly this happened? Would it be a vicious virus? A joke from Micro$oft? Any ideas?!?

my tilt keeps eating files on the sd card

my tilt keeps eating files on my sd card which hasent botered me much untill today it ate my tomtom maps and im over 200 miles from home so I don't know how im going to get home on thursday what could be causing this?
Could be a bad or dying card. I had one that behaved similarly -- got a new one that so far has been rock-solid
Newegg has some pretty cheap cards, I got a 2 gig for only 4 dollars, free shipping.

I'd say the same..
OP you got more chance that your card is corrupted than that your device has an appertite for data
that's what I thought when it 1st started but this card is only a cople weeks old. usually it just eats my wisbar themes or the folders there in this is the 1st time its ate anything oter than that.
Are you sure the files are totally gone? I had this happen a few weeks ago, where my ENTIRE SD card's contents were missing, and then out of the blue, they reappear unchanged. It happened again yesterday, and then, back to normal. Maybe an external reader could see if the files were there or not. Or try a data recovery program if they were deleted, there are a ton of free ones on the web. I think there was an alright one called something like Recuva. Good luck finding your files.
Dave
Disappearing files is not normal. Run a checkdisk.
I've had this happen to mine, as well. The files were there, but the file system had to me manipulated in order to get them to appear again. It would say on my computer that 5.38 GB of my 8 GB card were used, but no files were present. The only way it they would show up again was if I tried to recopy the files from my computer on a card reader. It would ask if I would like to overwrite the files, then they would reappear. I narrowed it down to an unknown error that kept happening after the Tilt would write a new file to the card. A hard reset is the only way I found to fix the problem. Since I did my most recent hard reset and formatted the Micro SD card and reinstalled everything, it works like a charm. Don't bother with AT&T. They are convinced it's a problem with the card. When I called, it was the first time that they had dealt with the issue. I even ended up talking to a rep from HTC, and they had never dealt with the issue. I, too, had TomTom Navigator, and lost maps. I have a SanDisk 8 GB MicroSD HC card. Maybe one or both of those components plays a factor in the error. I hate to say that you have to reset it to fix anything, but so far, it's the only thing that's worked. Back up your data. I carry a MicroSD card reader with me on my keychain with a card with duplicate data on it, just in case I am ever 200 miles from home without my GPS maps. I pop it in and worry about the issue when I get home.
I've to say you are not the only one person has this problem. My Tilt eat up SD contents all the time, especially when it try to write some contents to the card but the Tilt just switched-off during the writing. (I have some SW that pull data periodically from the Internet. Sometimes takes longer than the auto-off timer).
The only solution I have now is to make a backup mSD card on my notebook, and if anything suspecious happend to the card, I first run a chkdsk with notebook, or if the problem is beyond repair (like whole Tomtom missing), I just re-format the card then copy everything back.
Anyway, just chkdsk the card on PC periodically, my experience shows those small errors in begin will accomulate and finally eat up all files on the card.
And oh, yes, it's not necessarily a card problem. I have several mSD cards from various vendor with verious spec (speed, size) all shows the same problem.
Not perfect solution, but it serves me well. (Better than stuck 200miles from home...)
Maybe you should feed your phone more often so that it doesn't have those crazy urges to feast on your presious sd card files.

SD Card Corruption with Nexus One (has happened twice)

Twice in the last two months my 16 GB Class 6 AData microSDHC memory card has popped up as being "corrupt" and needed reformatting after powering back up from reboot on my Nexus One.
The first time happened on CM 5.0.3.1, the second time was with CM 5.0.4.1 with the UV kernel. Both times, data could not be read either through the N1, my old G1, or my friend's Droid. Thus a reformat was required and data loss ensued.
Anyone else experiencing occasional data corruption on their SD card? Another friend had it happen to his G1 with an 8 GB microSDHC memory card recently, running the latest CM for the G1, also on reboot and battery swap.
Is there a common thread here? Could it be HTC hardware-related? CM software-related? Just coincidentally two bad memory cards? Me using chinese replacement batteries when swapping out? The UV kernel? Not trying to point fingers or throw stones, just trying to get to the bottom of this...just lost some great pics of a recent vacation I just got back from. Suggestions or hints are welcome!
TIA!
this has happened to me a few times but I was still able to get my data through amon-ra recovery. I think it have something to do with an improper dismount of the card.
I'm curious, what brand of memory were your friends using?
I actually had this happen when my n1 was still stock (16gb class6 card)
I put the sd card in a card reader on my pc, everything was intact so I backed it up, reformatted and still had the n1 report it was corrupt. I ended up having to shut down, remove card, boot up w/o a sd card in, then with the sd card back in I never had the problem again
I know I did a full format the very first time, that 2nd time I had done a quick format. I've done a format recently also via amonra for ext partition and still no problems.
I happend to me few weeks ago. After turned it on ... I couldn't do anything because the screen was black and any key or type of touch was useful ... so I removed the battery and at the next start the SD wasn't readable anymore!
sry 4 my bad english!
erikikaz:
i'm running a 16 GD Class 6 AData memcard in my N1, my friend is running an 8 GB class 6 SanDisk memcard in his G1. Neither of us is running Apps2SD or anything weird.
glad to see i'm not the only one with this issue. was gonna buy a new 16 GB card but saw an article yesterday that sandisk is coming out with a 32 GB class 6 sdhc card in a month so i'll just wait for that one.
Same here
Same thing has happened three times on my Sandisk 16gb. I am running stock everything on nexus..nothing funky app wise.
After the first time it happened I replaced the sd card. It still happens. I have never been able to fix the card other than reformating. Chkdsk /f on win7 gets to 98% then throws an i/o error.
There is something majorly wrong. It seems that it happens in all android phones from time to time not just the nexus one. The consensus online seems to be that it is a mount/dismount issue that corrupts the card. I never mounted or dismounted the card at all with PC and it still happens so not sure what else it could be.
Do you think it is a phone hardware issue that would resolve with a new handset?
Has this ever happened to anybody using the standard 4GB card?
Where did you purchase your micro SD cards? There are a lot of fake/faulty cards being sold. I bought a fake one (unknowingly, obviously) and it kept getting corrupted until I tested it properly using h2testw.
I have the same problem on my nexus! I use an LG 16GB Card and CyanogenMod-5.0.5.3-N1! Any way of recovering the data without amon-ra?

roman

+1 Make sure you dismount from computer first...otherwise this problem will pop up again...and may not be correctable next time. (There's a reason why the phone asks you to properly dismount from computer first)
no **** my n1 has the error message damaged sd card. restarted the phone a couple times and same message. what should i do? i see peoples solutions on this thread but idk where to start. i have a rooted n1 running cyan 5053 with apps2sd
I have had this problem a couple of times too, the latest being this morning
I have a stock N1 with a 16GB Sandisk card. The first time this happened, i went to use the camera and it said insert SD card, even though there was one there, I rebooted the phone and then got the Damaged SD card message.
This morning I was on the train, had been using the phone to read the news earlier with no problems, I got it out of my pocket and screen was black. and the phone completely unresponsive. Removed and replaced battery, booted up and got the Damaged sd card message again.
Both times I have been able to recover most of my files by putting the card in a PC, the first time I found that a couple of my photos were corrupted and unrecoverable, indicating that possibly it was the camera app that may have caused the issue the first time.
This time though, I found that some of my music tracks were corrupted along with one of my videos, and also a directory on the SD called LOST.DIR. Everything else was fine.
Not sure why only these files were affected, as I was not listening to music or watching any videos, so I dont see why the nexus one should have been accessing those parts of the card when it corrupted.
I could not delete the corrupted files, even on my PC, accessing them causes the PC to lock up. The only way to get card working again seems to be a format.
If only the format would work!
Regards,
Roman
Just happened to me as well. Genuine 8gb Sandisk, class 4.
After a reboot Nexus reports corrupted card. It really seems corrupted, I'm unable to read it in a PC or anything else:
[ 1042.673542] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 1042.673551] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
[ 1042.673561] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error
[ 1042.673571] end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 10248
I'm using CM 5.0.4.1 with UV kernel.
It's happened to me, even using the "safely remove hardware" function on the pc. i started just using the unmount on the phone which seemed less problematic.
Yep...add me to the list. Running stock N1 was playing music when it ocurred it started skipping through the tracks fast right before it stopped. It has affected/removed all my pics and left the music.
I'm with you all:
2 times on my Motorola Milestone, using a 16GB class 4 "unbranded" card
3 times on my Nexus, using that same 16GB class 4 card.
2 times on my Nexus, with a 16GB class 6 SanDisk card.
Most times, the data has been available by mounting the card into a PC or Mac directly, though my Mac has seen the card as "read-only" in these cases.
I seem to have this problem after mounting the card onto my work PC, though I don't often do that. I mostly use ADB to copy files. Maybe it is linked to leaving the debugging interface up all the time? I do that and I'm sure that most of you do as well...
Me too
I am using FRF91 MRCr21 and I am on a 800mv 070810 .35 rc4 kernel. Newest 5.00.08.04 radio.
Twice now after using quickboot my phone has reported my SD card damaged and it says I will have to reformat. It is a 8gb class 2 sandisk, real. One time I used quickboot to enter recovery mode and the other was only to reboot the phone. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the best fix? Both times I rebooted my phone was stable. I wasn't downloading or installing anything. Thanks!
My phone can't read the card. If I pull the card and put it directly in my computer it won't read either. Both OS can't read the file system and want me to reformat.
Neither happened due to not dismounting. Anyone correlate the problem with quickboot?
have had zero luck with adata 16GB classs 6 cards. i have gone through 2 of them however their 8 GB card has been awesome
Just had this with a Sandisk 16GB Class 2 card. Inserted into card reader, copied something, popped it back into the phone, corrupt card message. Even the computer says I have to format it.

Help:: Milestone- SD card always not reading

I have a month old Milestone (GSM) which replaced my HTC Diamond. I did an OTA update to 2.1 update1 (SCHOLS_U2_02.36.0 build). Phone came preinstalled with an 8GB MicroSD card.
I have a major problem now: the SD card almost never works. Neither does any app which needs the sd card. "Sd card & Storage" settings does not open and hangs till it is force closed. It is detected on booting up the phone (Initializing SD card), but after that invariably turns to "sd card unexpectedly removed" if I try to access it (through File Manager/Settings/ASTRO/anything else).
System occasionally asks me to format the sd card saying "corrupted sd card", i have done it only once. Every other time I turn the phone off, remove battery & sd card, reinsert both and start the phone back up. The boot up recongnizes the SD card again, but the whole cycle repeats if i try to access the sd card or use an app that requires sd card functionality.
Also, connecting the phone to my laptop and trying to read the card also results in "SD card removed unexpectedly" and the laptop hangs if I try to enter the drive.
I have not tested a different MicroSD card (not possible to for some time). I have seen many instances of this problem elsewhere on the internet, and none seem to have any resolution. XDA is my last hope.
Please help.
PS: Maybe it's related, but the Camera doesn't work either. When accessed, the camera (and the camcorder) just show up as black screens and nothing else (no menu, no settings). It has to be force closed each time.
I have a very similar experience. The funny part is the card is mounted, but not visible.
Let me explain :
1. If i try any generic app which tries to access the SD card, it says it's not there.
2. Settings>SD card & phone storage says Unavailable to everything, like if the card is not mounted.
3. Fun starts now - Ghost Commander has no problem reading and opening directories and files on the SD card.
4. if i connect the phone to computer via "Charge only" option, i have no problems to view the SD card contects via "adb shell", "ls /sdcard" commands.
I suspect that this is another of the superb Motorola firmware updates, where at least 1 thing must break, or it wouldn't be Motorola Milestone firmware.
Same here. I only have a milestone since a few days, did you guys have that problem before the latest software patch already?
At least i know now that it is not my sdcard that makes problems.. seem to be a common bug
Just wanted to add that I'm having the same problem on my Milestone running the 2_02.36 build for Singapore.
I've noticed that Astro can still see the SD card and all the 3rd party apps that write to the SD card work fine as well. It's only the built-in Android apps (Camera, Settings etc.) that don't work.
It is a well known problem
I've been researching the last 2 days and found tons of complaints about the SDCard problems, there are a few lac fixes out there, but this is where the real problem starts.
Since my SCCard unpredictable unmounts or corrputs itself constantly, it is not even possible to install open recovery because after the reboot, the sdcard causes some problems that interrupt the process of a clean install (started with the exploit downgrade). And most fixes that "might" work, require Open recovery due they are scripted for that purpose and also enable a "roll-back" this way.
However, there is a solution to it, but since Motorola Europe has announced that from Ocober 18.th they begin with the froyo rollout, I'll wait.
Anybody that still wants to give it a shot, here's how I'd go for it:
- Root the milestone with the 1-click-rooting tool
- Install a console and su as root
- push the files via adb to the sdcard and execute the according how they are set up in the .sh
Ok, here's my fix: Downgrade to 2.0, not with the vulnerability sbf, but simply download bootloader and rom from here: http://and-developers.com/sbf
Fire up RSD Lite, start phone and press d-pad, once you're there, connect phone, downgrade bootloader and os.
There are differend sbf: System and non-system. The ones that are not system files, will completely restore your phone to original. I've chosen that option, now it works flawless, no missing features or apps, except the Xing app, which i couldn't care less.
In my case the card comes back after few reboots and then keeps working until next reboot, so if it comes back i try not to run off the battery .
This was not the case with the previous software version. This thing started after the software update.
Its effing annoying because half the functionality of the phone goes for toss if the sd card is not reading!
I have tested all "official" releases for the milestone. The only one that does a good job is 2.0. No battery drain, no sdcard unmount or whatever. Of course i also checked out the G.O.T. 2.2.1 Froyo.. some awesome performance increase, but then again, if i can't get of the house without carrying my charger, because within less than 8 hours its empty, it is simply not ment as an everyday phone. So i rather stick with the older, but solid version, which btw. is a common thing in IT anyway.. trying to get of this "version-junkie" trip ;-)

FYI, 2.0 has a problem of its own too - the camera autofocus bug.
No doubt about that. Ans release bug free? I still like the os for the fact tust its young and "beta"...with a great potential. (My personal opinion)
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
Hey Guys,
I myself have been having this issue ever since the latest update. Lets see, i got this phone in April this year and i have been having a lot of problems with the phone. The music player and camera auto-focus bug in 2.0, for instance, and the service centre in Singapore are not helpful at all till around August when they actually employs a Manager. Customer service picked up though after that and finally in Oct, after i called up Starhub and Motorola to scr*w them up, they are willing to exchange my milestone with a new one and i updated it to SHOLS_U2_02.36.2 and thats when my sd card problem started.
So 3 weeks later, yesterday, i had enough of the sd card problem. The problem just keeps getting worse. I almost wanted to slam my phone. Back to what i tried, I have tried to restore to factory settings, change my sd card (even though i doubt its the problem), and finally found the fix.
I flash my phone with Vulnerable Recovery for my bootloader, used RSD to downgrade my sbf to SHOLS_U2_02.36.0 and it worked. Oh and for those who doesn't want to lose any data, use the service version. I used the service version and it is working fine for almost a day now. No sd card unexpectedly removed, or any error message pertaining to sd card.
This is going to be my last Motorola phone ever. Sorry about the long post =X

Another HD7 SD Card Issue

My unbranded htc hd7 has been working perfectly for a couple of weeks now, but recently started to have problems. I switched it on after changing sim cards (which i believe i did perfectly, didnt drop or do anything wrong) and it then says..."storage card cannot be read", not allowing me to go any further. I then try to hard reset the phone, which gets the phone to start up with no problem, but now says it only has 12.5mb of storage available (my sd is 16GB, and is the same one issued with the phone).
I've already counted my losses with the stuff i had on it and i'm willing to format the SD card if it means fixing this issue. But Is there a way to fix this via bootloader or something else that will not void my warranty by me having to physically dissasemble it. Your input is very very much appreciated...
There is an option in Zune which lets you wipe all your data on the sd card:
Settings\Phone\Synchronization Options
Nah that didnt seem to work. When i click on erase, it erases the 12.5mb doesnt seem to find the sd card
Sounds like the SD card has become unseated or corrupt somehow
Let me know if you find a way of formatting the SD card without removing it.

Thanks for your input.
I suspected the same thing, so i removed the back cover and the battery, then used a "caveman fixing tactic" of banging the bottom part of my phone with my hand (didnt want to damage it by hitting it with something harder and again didnt want to open it), and its working. Tried banging it again after that to see if it will stop working again but seems to be fine now.
I know this is just a minor (silly) fix and will go to htc to complain about this fault and see if its loose in there because i've never hit the phone hard before this (besides hitting on my hand of course, which is the first and last time i'm doing it) and nor have i ever dropped it. I still havent ruled out the possibility of a faulty sd card, or an error that seems to be appearing with others after the recent NoDo Update.
hd7 sd card issue
I have exactly same issue, the first time (from new) i turned on it did see the sd card and then i inserted a SIM and did a reset and now it just reports 12.5Mb memory always. I have opened it, voiding warranty to remove the 16gig sandisk card and re-insert it many times but still doesn't see it and yet never reports any error like 'cannot detect sd card'. Next i flashed from O2 to a unbranded ROM (from this forum) and still the same and now doesn't even detects the SIM! Next i tried a new 1gig sandisk card.. still does see it (not sure format is required for wp7).. the orignal 16gig card cannot be read or formated on a PC tried using a pc dos format, low level format, sd format programs but pc never assigns drive letter to it.. so hd7 is scrap unless someone can suggest something to resolve.. i suspect the SD card interface from phone is faulty.. gona try the banging on table method next and hope is smashes to bits put it out of its misery!
Had the same issue with my phone. now stuck in bootloader mode. now have given up and using lg optimus one.
Mine is doing the same thing only showing 12mb even with the stock sd card. Did anyone ever get this fixed?
What version of WP do you guys are on? I noticed after each update, the system seems to grab more space on the card. That said, there is a option in Zune settings to change the available storage via slider, may be you have got that set to 12gb somehow... May be try to change it and c what happens then. I personally don't have this problem, even after modifying my hd7 so I can swap sd cards as needed (hard reset required but kind of useful)
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I modded my hd7, too. But I never had this problem.
Did you mod with goldcard method or hspal/rspal???
the sdcard has password on it and can only be read through the phone unless you somehow did something to file system and lost the password than you can fix it.
Fix 12 MB
it fix my sd
enjoy your HD7
