Nook Color vs. Galaxy Tab?

Has anyone spent a good amount of time with both a rooted Nook Color and the Galaxy Tab who can write some impressions on how they compare in regular use? The $350 difference is dictating that I go Nook Color, but it's always fun to hear comparisons before buying...

Two of my coworkers got a Tab. It is definitely better than the Nook Color - it's running Android 2.2 out of the box, the screen is as excellent as the Nook's, and it's got 3G, gps, bluetooth, and a camera (if those things are important to you).
It's also snappier as it has a slightly faster chip. It is thicker than the Nook Color though.
The biggest difference is that you can pretty much buy 2 Nook Colors for 1 Tab.
If you want the full Android 2.2 experience and the $300+ price difference is not a factor, then yeah get a Tab.

i only tested a display and i was blown away by the experience. all the goodness of the nook (great screen,sturdy hardware, 512MB of ram) with the performance of the archos 70 (much snappier than the nook-but not as fast as the galaxy).
i'm very much considering returning both the nook and archos 70 and just getting the galaxy tab. i only need one (other) tablet anyways.

The point is, how is the potential of the NC with a custom ROM?
With a fine software many think that the NC will perform almost as good as the Tab...
Time will tell.

I think it will.... Roms do make a HUGE difference with these type of devices. Let's hope someone get one out soon.

I wasn't too impressed with the Galaxy Tab when compared to the Nook Color. I don't need 3G, bluetooth or a camera because my phone has all of that. I've played with the Galaxy Tab in a store here in Finland and it's quite thick as well.
The Nook Color is thinner and than my iPad but with the same resolution screen and more dots per inch.
The cost is another issue. The Galaxy Tab is over 800euro over here yet the Nook Color came to under 300 euro including 23% local import tax and shipping service cost. I would have bought the Galaxy Tab if the price wasn't so ridiculous.

800 euro... that's 1050 USD. Here you pick up the Galaxy at the store for 600 USD, some 450 Euro.
Gotta love the CHEAP US of A!

I think we need to be a bit honest with ourselves here. Let us cut to the chase, the Galaxy Tab is a better device than the NC. It is more capable out of the box because of the hardware it carries, and as good as the Nook Color is, lack of hardware features can never be made up by the best ROM in the world.
This does not mean the Nook Color is a bad device. It is a great device, in its price range.
To me, the Nook is not a competitor to the Galaxy Tab. The Tab is a BMW. The Nook Color is a sturdy Ford, both good - but two different devices that do not compete with each other.
A buyer interested in a Galaxy Tab will not consider a Nook Color (as a Android tablet) just like a Nook Color buyer will not consider a Galaxy Tab. The price differential is just too big.
There is much to like about both devices, but comparing them, IMO, is apples to oranges - and a mismatch from the get-go.

Keep in mind who makes the Tab
Like so many others I heard about the Samsung Behold 2 and how those customers got screwed but got a Samsung Vibrant anyway. And like so many others I found out the GPS is borked. And the battery life is poor. At least I didn't experience the lag problem, but I returned it.
And watched for the not-really-promised GPS fix. Which finally came and...didn't work. I really liked the screen and wanted to like the phone, but if the phone can't do what was advertised up front, forget it.
And Samsung on Android 2.3 on their S9000 series of phones (e.g. Vibrant)? Their statement sounded like "Maybe someday if we feel like it and there is a strong tailwind we might think about it but no promises". Maybe the phone is a dead end, maybe it isn't, but based on Samsung's performance so far, I wouldn't count on it. It doesn't have 2.2 yet. My phone (MT4G) came with it, my wife's (DX) got an OTA.
To me this says the Samsung Tab is absolutely out. You'd have to practically give me one to get me to take it. Same for the Nexus S.
The Nook, right now, is not fully tabletized, but that's a matter of software. It has a fabulous screen and seems reasonable in many ways. It is far cheaper than any of its competition (as a tablet). I find it stylish and I could actually imagine reading books on it (I know, what am I thinking?). And my wife is irate that I'm considering it so soon after she got me an Air.
So, is there a Plex controller that is worthwhile for Android tablets? That'd go a LONG way toward getting approval from the missus.

I agree. Samsung has never supported their devices well, and they still insist on using proprietary cables and connectors on everything. On top of that, they went ahead and did everything I dislike about apple by releasing the galaxy tab at that price. They are not even trying to compete with the Ipad, they are just assuming that everyone who wants an android tablet will shell out the big bucks to buy it, the same way apple fans will shell out the big bucks to buy anything made by apple. I'm sure it's a good device, it's gotten great reviews - I just don't like the way they went about it.

My wife told me after I got the NC that she was going to get me a Tab for Christmas. I'm glad I got the NC, I would have had to return the Tab! Too many features in the Tab that I just won't use. The only thing it has that I wish the NC had, is the slightly faster processor (800MHz vs 1GHz.)
Besides the hardware differences, it's a Samsung. They aren't known for providing updates in a timely manner and support on their devices. Sure, we don't know about the NC's status in that respect, but I also don't really care given it's price point. Whatever the development community does is fine by me!
But as was already said, you aren't comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing apples to a fruit basket. It's got more, it's different, and it's more money. I'm fine with apples.

While we're talking about Samsung's business tactics that leave a sour taste in your mouth, two things come to mind:
- apparently they turned down Google's proposal for them to name the eventual Nexus S the Nexus 2 because "we're not #2 in anything." Wow. Surely someone is making a year-end list of "biggest douchebag quotes of the year" right about now - please note this one.
- I'd sacrifice my first-born if the reason for the delay until "after the holidays" for the wifi-only Tab was because of production delays. Either the carriers threw money at them to delay it, or it's just more profitable for them to sell 3g models, so they delayed it (or both). The irony is, I'd more strongly consider a Tab if a $450 wifi model was available now.

It would be closer if the Nook Color had Bluetooth, that way you could use a Bluetooth GPS, headsets, etc...
...but someone posted in another topic that Bluetooth might be there just "hidden", maybe in a custom ROM ?

About the Galaxy Tab, I've played with it for about an hour. My opinion is that it is laggy and definitely doesn't worth the ~600 euros that is its price here in Greece.

The processor chipset (?) is supposed to include bluetooth. It's assumed it wasn't activated due to licensing costs for bluetooth, so it's there, just not used and may be "unlocked" by a rom.

I've both. NC cannot compare to the Galaxy Tab in user experience.
You just get a much better polished experience with the tab on everything. Tab's gpu is almost 10x faster in polygon count. CPU is faster (even with SetCPU set at performance on NC). Everything just works on the Tab.
That said, I am considering returning my Tab because of all the new tablets coming out in a few months, and the price. NC could hold me over for a few months.

Do you know if the hardware GPU is better than the NC or is just based on current software of Tab vs NC? I've done a lot of research into the nook color, but I admit, graphics wise it's still a bit of a mystery to me.

Nookcolor thoughts after CES

Now with CES behind us but with thoughts of all those new tablets still fresh in our heads, anyone still think a rooted Nookcolor will be able to hold it's own against the tide that's coming.
Anyone with a rooted Nookcolor-will you still buy a tablet this year and if so which one, or will the Nookcolor still do.
I think the price point of the Nookcolor is it's greatest strength now.

I agree for $250, the NC can't be beat. Honeycomb on NC
I do plan on getting a new tab, maybe one of 10.1" running Honeycomb but don't know which one yet.

My opinion is...
The Nook is a book reading device first. Its a make shift tablet second.
It is not really fair to compare it to tablets that are designed to be tablets.
With that said, the newest thing is always around the corner. What is NOT around the corner is the hundreds more dollars for me to spend that these new devices cost as compared to the Nook.
Once the Nook gets a stable and functional Froyo, it will put it a very good advantage for at least the next year with app support.
It will take some time for Tegra2 to build up steam and drop in price. Meanwhile you have all of these older devices/tablets/cellphones still running older systems.
Just because 3.0 is coming up does not mean that all support will stop for the older devices. Developers would be foolish to stop supporting the older builds.
So, the answer for me is YES, the Nook is a great buy at this moment in time.

I have to agree with the price point being the NC's largest draw and strength. For $250 you can't get a better piece of hardware. Once we can get honeycomb (and by we I mean you people smarter than myself) on the NC we'll be flying high.

From what I have read, which may be BS, honeycomb will require dual processors to function properly, so I doubt nook color can handle it.

There's always something "better" available "real soon now". I'd have to check, but none of the CES announcements included either a price for the device or a release date. Heck, the Adam took almost a year from CES to release, and even then it had a very limited release and still hasn't shipped. But you can go over to B&N and pick up a NC right now.

I just picked up a Nook Color for $180 from CL...but even at full price I didn't see anything that blew me away from CES. Sure the newer tablets will have better CPUs etc. but I doubt they will have the Screen quality of the NC at this price-point. For me what sold me on the NC is the ability to Root it, make it a very functional tablet (even if so claim its a book reader first, I think it makes an amazing tablet). I am one of the few that do not need a webcam etc. And let's not forget the amazing Screen quality!

CES Shows some really awesome looking devices but the market at the moment is pricing everything retardedly high. For the moment the $250 NC is the best bang for the buck for a simple Tablet. And I do fully expect to see a Honeycomb port in due time.
Untill the market gets saturated with actually good devices around the $300 price point and not the $499 point, (Especially the 3G only devices?! Not everyone wants or needs 3G!).

From my viewpoint:
The OS is sometimes the most expensive part of buying a PC/tablet. I would expect with the fact that Android is open, costs for these devices would be driven down significantly. However, the new crop of Android tablets are up there with Win OS tablets (almost), yet don't have a full featured OS.
I agree with spikey911 that this is an ereader first, Android tablet second. To me, having it run android apps is a benefit, not the primary reason I got it.
I would love a dual core or a Tegra 2 tablet. Would I pay more than $300 for one? Absolutely not. By the time that comes down in price, the next crop of the "greatest" comes out.
The only way I would upgrade to different tablet is if/when the Lenovo LePad/U1 comes down in price. Then I could chuck the NC and my Core 2 duo netbook.

That's the same thing i thought, but then how to you explain the galaxy tab? 600 bucks for what? Where they price gouging? I picked the nook color because the ability to root and the build quality was outstanding. Closest to that of the iPad. With the new crop of devices coming they are not bringing anything new, dual core yay but other than that what else. For those with nooks is 4-500 dollars worth a larger screen? What can you do on those that you cant do on the nook color? Also nook is still on 2.1 so with froyo there should be a slight speed increase.
Dont think anything from CES was mind blowing and would make me considering giving up my nook.

Outside of Android, Gigabyte just announced a reasonably nice Win7 Tablet with a N550 (duel core) and even a 320G HD supposidly aimed at the sub $300 market. If so with a reasonable capacitive screen it would be one of the first reasonable Win7 Tablets. For a device that has netbook specs it may be the first to finally get it that they need to be priced reasonable for the reasonable specs. Touchscreen replacement for a keyboard should not cost $200 more.

I'm still waiting patiently for the NC with 2G/3G... Anyone know when it will be out?

I think that we are seeing the NC at razor thin markup (almost cost) due to the "razor/razor blades" marketing model that ebooks use. B&N expect to make all their money on book sales, not the hardware. Until we have a Tegra2 KindleIV to compare to, I doubt we'll know for sure

I'm not looking for my Nook to replace my laptop. The thing that got me is the performance/price and the big thing: not having a data plan. I don't understand who has the money to buy a $500 device and then pay $25-50/month for 24 months. I can buy a really nice laptop for $1100-1700.

For me the NC is a tablet first & an ereader second! At least that's the way I use it. IMO it has enough going on hardware wise that the only time that it is an ereader first, is that period of time between opening the box & rooting it! Just because it doesn't have a few hard keys, camera or GPS & USB host doesn't mean it is not a viable tablet. Actually, a rooted NC has more tablet functions than it does ereader functions. I am very happy with the NC without these features, as that kept the price where I could afford it. With it competing in the ereader market, B&N had to price it accordingly. If it had been competing as a tablet, it could have demanded a much higher price. I was not looking for a laptop replacement, just a more portable connected device that doesn't require a data contract.

Best tablet for under $300. Once Froyo is successfully ported and BT able kernel it will be even better. There is no way you will find another 7" tablet with capacitance screen, 1024x600 res, 512MB RAM, 8GB Internal Storage for anywhere near this price. B&N is selling them at a low price to get people to buy their ebooks.

I am not convinced that not having some pretty strong minimum hardware specs is a good thing. Microsoft was pretty smart by setting the bar high on their Win Phone 7 units. I think the Android community would benefit from having some specs that ensure that a tablet or phone will perform fast and smooth. You know that Apple will increase their specs for the next iPad and it will suck if honeycomb runs poorly on previous gen tablets.

I've been enjoying my NC since February. I use it mainly for e-books, e-mail, web surfing, casual gaming and occasional Netflix streaming. I love tinkering with it using different ROMs, etc.
About 2 weeks ago, I purchased a XOOM and have been enjoying it as well. Initially, I thought that I would just sell the NC since it would be redundant to have two Android tablets, but I just can't let it go. The experience of using both devices is very different. While XOOM is great for surfing the web (native resolution webpages without zoom in/out), typing long e-mails or watching a movie, NC is very portable and perfect for reading (can't hold the XOOM -or any other 10.1" tab for that matter- in one hand for an extended period of time).
I guess I'm going to keep both. I was wondering if any of you were/are in the same situation? Did you end up keeping the NC?

I'm not quite in this position just yet. But I know exactly how you feel. I really enjoy the Community that the Nook Color has, I love the size and portability that comes with this device.
But I want more. Really, I want to be able to have a tablet media center on the go, and the Nook is really lacking without hdmi out.
So I find myself really pondering what to jump for next... And unfortunately few things are making me want to. Doesn't help that I promised the wife this Nook Color in fall for her classes... Hope Amazon hurries up with their Nook Killer a.k.a Coyote.

I'd like to pick up a 10" tab running android.
I can't see ever getting rid of the Nook Color, even when that happens. I'll own this device until the end of it's life.
I like the form factor, and the nature of it as an e-book reader means it will always have use for me.
I can't see being the avid reader I am on a 10" tab.
I've been looking at tablets with my lady, and she still wants a Nook Color. It's the size that does it for her, and the quality of the device.
The Nook Color hits a quality level in it's offering that hasn't been seen in quite some time on the regular retail market.

This is going to sound weird after stating this thread, but I sold the Nook Color today
Someone made an offer that I couldn't resist (came ahead at the end), and after seeing the upcoming 7" tablets, as well as the 8.9" Sammy and anticipated Amazon tablet, I decided to let the little guy go before its value stats to decrease due to competition.
I'll be definitely picking up a 7" tablet to accompany my XOOM in the future, but I don't know which one yet.
I guess this should be my good by post to the Nook community. It's been fun!

Does the Acer bring with it the end of the NC as a tablet?
I looked up what specs I could find and the features do look impressive, except for the battery. It appears this is the tradeoff that was made to cut down on weight so "it would be suitable for female users". 1530mah that will last up to 5 hours? That sounds a bit optomistic to me. To put it in perspective the NC has a 4000mah battery that is supposed to last up to 8 hours.

No tablet currently available can beat the nooks beautiful screen. You can all the specs in the world but if your screen sucks there really isn't any point to it.

Isn't it just an IPS screen with 1024 x 600 resolution? None of the tablets (not just 7" competitors)? Really?
There are many tablets in the market with similar -or better- screen compared to NC. Besides, my XOOM doesn't have an IPS screen and I'm perfectly happy with it.

When you look at the overall specs of the nook as compared to the other 7" tabs on the market, the nook just comes out on top. This takes into account the price and the screen. One of the most comfortable things about the nook IMO is the design which boots first from the sd card. It is almost impossible to brick this thing. The only feature the other tablets have that I would want is a functional webcam. With CM7 and host mode enabled, I have all the features the other tablets have except webcam. At present, HC, as an OS, leaves a lot to be desired, the other tabs have poor to average battery life and there are few tablet optimized apps. Yes, HC can run all the apps out there but the overall results are somewhat less than optimal. For my money, I'll wait till q4 when we should have ICS and the quadcore chips out there. Not trying to flame any other tablets but I have tried out most of the 10" tabs extensively and have not found one I would jump on right now. Just saying.....

As already mentioned in this thread, the main category that NC lags behind is anything multimedia related. The speaker, headphone jack, lack of microphone, etc etc. Of course, these are not expected on a NC, because it was designed as an eReader. However, since you are putting it above other tablets -even the 10.1" ones- then the comparison will be valid (again, normally I wouldn't even compare it).

Actually, one of the reasons that I decided to sell the NC now was because it is pretty much alone in its segment (i.e., 7" tablet) and the price is its biggest strength. However, any 7" tablet that is around $300 may make it harder to sell the NC in the future.
As I mentioned, I am still in the market for a 7" tablet. I just need Staples to start carrying 7" models, so that I can get it for next to nothing

So, you're saying size really DOES matter... lol... just had to!

My situations with the Nook is this. I didnt need a tablet. Couldn't even try to make up an excuse as to why I needed to buy one. All I knew is after reading these threads is that I just wanted one. Now I couldn't live without it. Its totally replaced my laptop and put a serious dent in my main desktops use too. I will buy another tablet once one is released that's worthy but the Nook has earned its right to stay indefinitely.

I bought the Nook Color because it was cheap and hackable and I figured it'd keep me busy and avoid ay temptation to buy something fancy/expensive because there will be lots of movement in the field this year. But once CM7 came out for it I've just been a really happy camper. I think what it's going to take to get me to move is a 4x3 aspect IPS screen maybe running ice cream sandwich, and a "family" data plan so I don't have to think about tethering or wifi access. The 16x9 screen just doesn't fit web pages or book reading nicely when in portrait orientation which I seem to favor. Yeah I just described an iPad, but I'm not going there.

Rumor has it that XOOM2 will be in 4x3 aspect and will be released -according to Moto CEO- in September.

How does a $250 Asus Transformer compare to the Nook Tablet?

I'm a very happy owner of a rooted NC and have been following the progress of the Nook Tablet, planning to get one when the cm team puts out a rom for it.
Today I see that the Asus Transformer will be $250 at Best Buy for Black Friday.
I haven't been following the Transformer so I'm not very familiar with it. A quick look at the cm and xda forums doesn't seem to show any roms for this device so that is a concern.
Is this tablet a better buy than the Nook Tablet for the same price? Note I'm talking about a NT with cm on it, not a base device.
Would it be worth the hassle of dealing with Black Friday at Best Buy?

@ $250 get the Transformer if you can, you get HDMI out, Camera and GPS, just to name a few of the advantages.

The Transformer it's a top notch tablet.
It is bigger, faster, fully capable tablet.
Honeycomb feels elegant and sophisticated compared to CM7.
I bought the keyboard dock and spend about 50/50 with and without the keyboard.
The Nook has size advantage when it comes to taking it anywhere in my purse but I love both equally.
Battery life is excellent. I got mine for $300 but I am glad I won't be standing in line to get one for $250

What? There is root/recovery/ROMs out for the device.

Transformer is lightning fast compared to the Nook. I have both including the dock and I have stopped using my Nook except for reading. Just a way better experience.

The TF (Tegra 2) is about on par with the Nook Tablet (OMAP 4430) for general computing, but is much worse than the NT for video playback.
The TF has HDMI out, but has no USB port. To get USB, you need to buy the dock, which I understand is $100. The dock does add a keyboard along with an extended battery, but it also adds weight. Effectively, with the dock, the TF will be an underpowered $350 netbook with detachable screen. The hybrid setup tends to be a love-hate situation. I myself prefer use of a BT keyboard that can be used for any tablet.
The TF has an IPS screen, but build quality is somewhat iffy, with speakers going out and various other ailments. Per freq of problem reports in the various Tegra 2 tabs' forums, it's about on par with the Acer Iconia, and less reliable than the Xoom or the Samsung GT.
As of this moment, the latest TF B70 stepping is still unrootable, ever since Asus changed its SBK (secure boot key). I wouldn't count on rooting the TF, since the issue has been around since August.
The TF will likely get official ICS upgrade some time early 2012.
IMO, it depends on your use. If you want an integrated keyboard, then the TF ($350 w/ keyboard) is better. It also has a larger screen, which is better for certain uses and certain people, eg older users.
I don't think it's a "better-worse" decision, since the TF and NT are different enough with little overlap. BTW, the TF has been periodically on sale at $300 for a while, so basically you'll be doing the fight-the-stampede deal for $50.

$250 is a pretty good price. If I wasn't going to get the tf prime I would pick one up.
You might be able to get it on cyber Monday online and not have to deal with the crazy people at black Friday sales.

I had no intentions of rooting the Transformer - it is great without it.
ASUS has already announced that they would be upgrading the Transformers to Ice Cream Sandwich.
I haven't had any issues with video but I don't intend to stream video to my TV; I have a Roku, a Sony Media Player and an LG Bluray all with wifi so I can stream from those.
IMO I think the ASUS Transformer is one of the best tablets out there and worth the $250 or $300 it costs.
Edit: ASUS has really impressed me with their willingness to issue OS updates for this device. I don't think any phones or other tablets have gotten as much love from the manufacturer.

That is a great price. I have the NC and the TF. The TF is a full tablet running Honeycomb. Even without rooting it is a great experience. Much better than the CM7.1 on the NC. FWIW, Asus has provided great support on the TF. They just updated the firmware on Thursday. Some post have said that ICS is coming to the TF in January.

If comparing both as tablets then; the Transformer wins because it is usable as a HC tablet out-of-the-box with official G Market support plus the pending upgrade to ICS.
The NT will require aftermarket hacking and OSes to run as a tablet.
It will of course enjoy great developer support (here & elsewhere) assuming the 'SD card-boots-first' holds true to make it easier. I doubt if we see anything beyond Gingerbread on the NT.
However, dealing with the lines of people on frigid mornings outside BB is not worth it (IMO). It seems every year the lines keep getting longer and longer with people coming in at 9:00 p.m. the previous night. Just not worth it anymore.
I would rather get the NT for $250 and mess with it.
On a side note: I am excited about the NT since it comes with a dual-core, more ram and storage and a mic. I have 3 year extended coverage with ADH handling from ST. Hope my NC breaks down in the next 12 months; might get the NT as replacement....he he.

I thought about it, and after finding out the closest best buy is almost 2 hours away, I just said nah.
Plus, I'm dying to see if I can get the NT as a replacement in case something "terrible" were to happen to my NC lol.

I just saw that Bestbuy will be selling the Dell Streak 7" with Honeycomb installed for $160. I saw this right after I finally decided to go ahead and buy a Kindle Fire. Now it seems almost like a no brainer to get a near full featured tablet with the same size screen as a Kindle Fire but for $40 less, but it also seems too good to be true.
So I wanted to know, are you all happy with your Streak? Would you say that $160 is worth it.

I felt in love with Dell Streak 7 already, too bad that I bought this for my gf, and giving it to her tomorrow. Dell Streak 7 is a good tablet, of coz the resolution is not high so it doesn't let you play all the HD games and you don't have much RAM to play heavy games, but if you use it for entertainment, relax with no "tough" game then it is better Kindle Fire. And of coz this is just my opinion. To be frank, I don't play much with my Iconia A500 since I got this

Very much so! I love this little bad boy underdog.

I am happy with mine. I wish the screen had a little better resolution. Bluetooth tethering to my phone is a snap. I basically wanted something that was like my phone but larger and it works just perfect as that. Its much easier and faster to use than having to drag out my laptop.

I initially liked my DS7 but over time it began to annoy me. The screen began to make my eyes hurt when reading and the battery would run down quickly. I ended up getting several Nook Tablets for the family and for my purposes, I'm more satisfied. The NT screen is much sharper and the battery lasts hours longer than the DS. I only used the camera once and never used the GPS so the trade is worth it since I mainly use my tabs for reading, surfing and light game play. I did initially miss the variety of apps but someone came up witha workaround and now I can sideload with apps free sites and Amazon app store.

I like my Dell Streak 7, the 7 inch size and weight is much more handy then my 10.1 inch tablet in its portfolio case. Basicly the compact handling of a phone with a readable (as opposed to squintable) screen size. Screen resolution has not been a problem infact it is a nice match to Netflix.
The short 4-5 hour battery life is the only aspect I wish was better.

Is that for a mix of usage or for straight video watching?
With my rooted DS7, using SetCPU and setting up custom profiles, I tend to see about 4-5 for watching vidoes, but get about 6-10 hours for playing games, and a 4 day standby time.

The battery isn't a major issue for me. Not a fan of the stock launcher though. Really want to use LauncherPro, but it keeps fc'ing. Anyone have any suggestions on other LauncherPro like launchers?
Also for some reason, I can't listen to voicemails with Google Voice. Still got to figure that one out.

Device does not support WiFi channels 12-14, makes a noise when speakers are enabled, batery life is not so good, WiFi signal is worse than other tabletst, display is very bad (angle/resolution), also the device is clumby (fat and heavy)
BUT
it is very cheap and very fast. im fine with it so far, but i might switch to another device.

got one form BEST BUY. still on the way.!!!! but I'm Sure the screen not the BEST!

so far so good only one problem it is not reading from SD Card.

No I am not. And Don't buy a streak 7 given so many much better choices out there in the market.
My DS7 was a total disaster now I see it. It was my first tablet and I was inexperience to make an informed buy. I bought from TMO store on the release date and then found that no Dev is supporting it.
Eventually I participated a donation led by someone else and we send a device to DJ Steve who became the one and only dedicated dev on DS7, who are also working on many other devices at the same time.
Screen horrible, battery horrible, TMobile 4 G signal always break down for no reason and requite a reboot to get it back. GPS NEVER works well for a trip without a hiccup. This is my third DS7 already because I exchanged the previous 2 with Dell because all sorts of reasons.
Since you are asking advise I assume you won't want to listen to holiday choirs and holy praises. I am the bad guy who is critical.
Bottom line, DONT BUY A DISCONTINUED PRODUCT WITHOUT DEV SUPPORT.

I'm thinking about what 7-inch tablet i'll going to buy: Dell Streak 7 or Lenovo A1.

What other products are there? Currently it's the cheapest (mid/high end) 7" tablet available, it's main competetors are the gtab7/+ which is either lower specced or more expensive. It was just sold for $160 on black friday new and can be found pretty easily for
~$250 on ebay in good condition.
Sub $200 tabs cant compete with it as they have very low end internals.
The S7 with Froyo and the s7 with Honeycomb are completely different devices (not literally, but the way it works)
I didnt buy mine until black friday as I so no point with froyo on it, but it's pretty great with HC.
As for the 4g, I honestly dont see the point of a 4g tablet, I have the wifi one and simply tether to my S5 (and also avoid paying a 2nd line just for data)
The GPS is rather weak on it, but in my case the wifi one is likely worse at wifi then the 4g one. It works with some hiccups.
So what if it'd discontinued, even if dell did support it for another 6 more months, the most we'd get is like 3.2 -> 3.2.2/3.2.4, there's no chance it'd get updated to ICS.
You have your warrentee, they're not gonna magically/instantly null it, they're still gonna support active warrentee owners until they all expire. (it might become them only offering refurbs but this is still support)
Bottom line: for $190-240 there's really little competition, it's either the S7 or the gtabs.
The Gtab 7 is slower but about the same price
The Gtab 7+ is faster but more expensive
The Lenovo A1 is slower but about the same price

How about nook tablet or kindle fire? Since people here enjoy custom rom anyway, os on these two won't be a problem I guess

Hmm that is a good point, I had forgotten about those.
Depending on how you look at it, they only run GB and not HC/ICS.
If you wanna use it as a normal android tablet, they're not currently ready for that purpose as they dont have any stable roms yet.
I do believe the kindle is slower, but it'd definitely got more devs, and when CM9 hits stable it might be a pretty good choice. It's tegra 2 vs CM9 for the same price point.
I cant say much about the nooks, the old nook is much slower but cheaper and will likely get CM9 (it already has CM7), I dont read much at all about the new nook except I expect it to also get CM9 eventually.
I assume the S7 will still be the fastest of all 7" tabs except vs the gtab7+.
The nooks and kindles are advertised as ereaders, with the kindle as kina ereader+multimedia. They're not advertised as full on tablets so they can be underpowered for their age.

same here. i get more and more unhappy every day. multitouch works only to up to two fingers. you are right about gps, i tested it and got only 2 satelites in 2 minutes while standing in the garden.

I guess I look at it as being the best $160 tablet I've ever owned. The only issue is the battery life, but I can charge it twice a day for the hundreds I'm saving over comparable devices.
The screen sure does take a lot of flack on the Streak 7, but if you look for the silver lining, just about every app works at that resolution. You don't have some of the scaling issues that higher resolution tabs have.
I also hear a lot of comparisons to the Fire and the Nook...and, if they get root and a good custom ROM, then they might be better for "basic" tablet functions, but if you want full tablet functions out of the box, with all the cameras, mics, GPS, etc...then the Streak is still a better option.
Ah well, this forum is pretty much dead, so I'm sure this will fall on deaf ears (or blind eyes?).
I'm happy though!

I bought a Dell Streak 7" last week that was a couple of months old for $150. It came with Froyo but I upgraded to Honeycomb and it's like having a different tablet, really nice for what it is.
It's not an iPad2, Asus Transformer, Xoom, Acer etc. I looked at all of those tablets two days ago and the screens on them are very much nicer, but...they cost $300-$400-900+, not $150. The Streak is a real tablet not one of those $100 unknown brand Android tablet gadgets that last a week. The wifi and GPS work great along with having Honeycomb now I really like it.
I owned an iPad2 for 4 months and it is a fantastic device, it also cost me $1000 for wifi/3G and a Smart Cover. I've had the Evo4G since Aug. of '10 and love Android so in the future I'm thinking about the Asus Transformer that's coming out later this month. It will cost 2 to 3 times as much as the Streak, it will have a beautiful screen, and be worth the extra money no doubt.
I use the Streak for Flying and it is outstanding for various Aviation moving map programs. For $150 instead of $1400-2500 for a Garmin GPS aviation unit it is a bargain.
So you're not alone, the Dell Streak 7 does what it's supposed to for a reasonable price, and I like it too.
