has anyone figured out how to open ebooks in it?
You need your ebooks (pdf) to be on your SD card I believe on the top level directory. I usually just find mine in Astro and it'll ask if you want to use Adobe to open them then it'll save them as documents you've opened.

Thanks, I just need to find a current version of ASTRO.
Aight, i have adobe reader 10. it does everything i need but can't find the reflow option (make fonts bigger). I dont want to have to downgrade to 9. too slow and choppy. Any help?
So far, the best pdf reader I have found is ezPDF. I use it on my Archos tablet. Has anyone tried this on the NC?.

Works w/ bugs. Getting Special Characters on screen, making the book un readable at times.
ezPDF, Adobe, RepliGo.
Since I bought it as a reader, first thing I did was check a bunch of pdf reading apps. From experience RepliGo works, Adobe works, and ezPDF works. The best of the three is ezPDF, but you need an SD card for the cache. The next best is Adobe.
I don't think any of them have an open feature that allows you to browse for the file you want to open, so they all require a file manager. Adobe and ezPDF both have a recent feature that remembers what pdfs you have opened recently, so that kinda helps.
Could anyone comment on the native PDF app? Does it work in landscape mode? And how well do panning and zooming work? I know in the original nook that zooming didn't really work, but it looks like reviews of the NC say that PDF handling is much better.
I've got a whole of math class notes as PDFs, and trying to reflow on those would be a pretty epic failure.
Thanks in advance!

Perhaps, I am wrong, but I could not get ezPDF to work without an SD card. ezPDF creates a folder on the SD card where it keeps information on the opened pdfs, configurations and settings. It also has a temp folder which I just assumed to be for memory purposes.
I have tried many pdfs and they look no different than on a computer, save for the occasional LN, which stands for a link. Those special characters don't really interfere with anything since they reside at the bottom.

The native PDF is QuickOffice. There a few things that bother me about it. One, there are certain formats that it does not like for pdfs and will just display a giant x. Two, it does not save the page where you left off. Three, to switch the page, you must swipe down to up as opposed to right to left or tapping the right side. Four, it does not have an indicator to display whether the page is loading or completely loaded. I sometimes find myself waiting on blank pages to do something. Or used to, since I use ezPDF which has an indicator and fixes all the mentioned problems.
To answer your questions about the native app: It works in landscape. You can fit the pdf to width or zoom in and out by using the pinch gesture or tapping the (- +) that shows up on screen. The pdf handling is much much better. The native app does not give you many options, so text reflow is out of the question, which I presume is not a bad thing in your case.

+1 for ezPDF with an SDcard.
Night mode with reflow is great, but I have problems tapping the bookmark button successfully.
Maybe my version of ezPDF is different than yours. I am running it on an Archos 101, not an NC. I am here because I am looking for a smaller tablet and deciding between the Archos 70 and the NC.
My ezPDF has a tab across the top that allows me to select either "recently viewed PDFs" or "all PDFs". The "all PDFs" tab lists directories and can expand the directories individually to select PDF files.
In my experience, ezPDF is way better than Adobe's reader for Android. Adobe's works pretty well, but is pretty basic. There are many, many features in ezPDF that are not in Adobe's.
OTOH, from what I have read in this and the B&N forums, the built-in QuickOffice PDF reader is less than basic. It has no reflow, for example, which I think is required for this type of device. It also seems to not support some common image types or compressions, or at-least folks are reporting pages with red x's across them. The feature set has been reduced from what QuickOffice offers in the actual product.
I find ezpdf to be too slow when it comes to going to the next page.
The stock reader works in landscape but I can not get it to remember where I left off.
I'm still looking for one I like. I wish there was an Android version of Annotate. That's my favorite on the Ipad.
I agree it is slow, but I can't read that fast. For me, the page scroll at the bottom more than compensates for that. The 101 is a bit faster than the NC (1GHz vs 800MHz), but I consider ezPDF so superior that I won't look back.
I assume you mean iAnnotate, and yes, I agree.
sin7, thanks for answering my questions about QuickOffice. That actually sounds like it should work for my needs pretty conveniently, since I'm using it for math references which don't necessarily need to stay on the same page.
I've seen a few people in other threads mention that vudroid works nicely for PDFs on NC once you've installed the softkeys app. Mine is still in the mail, so no personal experience, but that might help some of you still looking for the best app?
Could somebody stick up Adobe Reader 10 apk somewhere? I'm having the devil of a time tracking it down, and I cant seem to find the damned APK file on my phone to pull it off...
Thanks.
- Will.
You can search for the Adobe Reader on freewarelovers.com.
For some reason 10.0 is listed as an old version apk, but you can still download it.
Is there anything I should know about how a rooted Nook Color acts compared to something that's meant to be a tablet (e.g. the Galaxy Tab) that could influence whether I want one? For example,
This thread has workarounds for a bunch of quirks and problems with the NC. Is it common to need to workaround these and other B&N ROM issues?
I've seem mention of 'porting' apps to the Nook Color. Does this mean I have to do more work to get apps from the market than just hitting 'install'? Do some apps not work on the Nook Color?
It looks like B&N pushes over-the-air software updates to the NC that return it to a stock ROM. Is this easy to prevent? When they push their Q1 update, will it (probably) be easy to apply the update and then get all of my data/settings back, or are updates a pain that I have to put off applying until I have time to reconfigure everything?
Is there anything else I should know?
Well I am not hijacking this forum I just ordered a Nook Color I would cetrainly love to see these questions answered but could I also add a few of my own ?
I am in Europe what kind of usability can I expect from the device, will I be able to register it and what about books.
Also I 've heard there are some touch issues, whats up with that ..? is it true .. any solutions..?
I am following the BT thread and all looks great but what about the USB would we be able at some point to connect ext HDDrives or Webcams ..
Lastly I understand it will only play .mp4 movies anyway around that .......?
I will try to give you a couple answers based on my own experiences, though im no expert when it comes to rooting.
Yes there are some quirks with the NC that you wouldn't have to deal with on a regular android tablet. The biggest one is the lack of hardware buttons. There are several software solutions for this, the most effective and stable of which has been "button savior" which you can get in the market.
Some apps font render correctly because of the screen resolution/dpi of the NC. Some of that can be fixed by using an LCD density changing app or altering the setting manually.
You shouldn't have to port apps to run on the NC, but don't be surprised if some apps don't show up in the market. Most stuff works fine though.
As far as i can tell you wont get BN ota updates unless you're on a BN store wifi network. I've been rooted for weeks and i've never seen the 1.01 update pop up. I figure im waiting for the bigger update before i bother reverting to stock and restoring all my apps.
Ill post more stuff as it comes to mind!
posted from my nook color using the official xda app
There are certainly quirks, such as the hardware buttons issue mentioned above. And some apps don't work now, but I imagine other tablets would have similar issues. as android tablets grow in popularity we can expect more compatible apps

The B&N ROM does not contain some things that were completely not needed for the device as it was designed, so yes there are workarounds in that thread and on the wiki here: http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Issues

Never heard anything of "porting" apps, only reason would be screen resolution of tablets vs phones. Some apps don't behave nicely on the higher res, either they are in the center of the screen, stretched out and ugly, or simply draw really badly. Most fall into the first two categories.

Yes, your device will query for OTAs and so far nobody has figured out how to safely disable them. Update to 1.0.1 first, then noot it. And when a 1.0.2 or 1.1.0 comes out, expect to do it again. Until someone comes out with a real way to disable the OTAs or a full custom ROM is made.

It generally happens only when plugged in, and almost always unplugging it and turning off the screen and turning it back on the problem goes away. Some folks say it happens more if the screen is dirty, although in my experience with capacitive screens this is not the case.

Highly unlikely, but there are ways to do USB Host drivers on Android phones, so it's possible in the future.

Sure, use something like RockPlayer.
Other things to note...
Games run fairly well on Nook Color. I've been using Dungeon Defenders (framerate not the best), Antigen, Angry Birds, Fuzzies and Nesoid. They all work pretty well except for poor framerates with Dungeon Defenders.
You'll definately need Button Savior. The LCDDensity app is also good to have and tinker with. You'll want to get NookColor Tools on there as well to change keyboards. Root Explorer also.
It runs pretty much any app that I can run on my Droid.
Dolphin-Mini works great on the Nook Color.
There are some issues with buttons at the screen edges, like the Android Marketplace search icon or tab switching in Dolphin. Adjusting LCD Density with the LCDDensity app will cure that problem. Otherwise you will have to figure out how to tap on the edges for it to register. Mine only does this at the top edge and not on the sides or bottom.
Overall, a great device. Clockwork is well on it's way to being finished. And there are now a few folks jumping on the bandwagon to create custom roms.
Rockplayer will play other video types, but wont use hw acceleration and will be choppy. Best to convert to mp4 instead.
In the end i think this tablet is for those who actually enjoy tinkering and tweaking.

Seems like I say this constantly, but in my opinion you do not need Button Savior, Softkeys included in the Auto Nooter script for 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 works great.

Exactly. I've enjoyed "fixing" the Nook. But this process could be annoying to many people. Those people would be much happier with an ipad.

I agree. When you set softkeys "just so", it's a near-ideal key replacement. The default setup is what throws people off, with the little arrow-guy getting in the way and some confusion regarding the "n" key.
Mine is invisible except when I single tap the "n" key -a double tap gets me "home". That's perfect, and not at all in the way.
I recently succeeded in getting my NC to boot NF from emmc successfully. I am having some issues with certain apps. Now I know that NF isn't absolutely 100% perfect yet but any advice on these issues would be appreciated.
1.) Can't install New York Times or CHASE bank apps; I did the modifications to the build.prop file from NookDevs. I can see both but can't install either.
2.) Google Reader App installs and syncs fine but with a few exceptions. It scales the entire screen when I view the categories and the feeds within them but once I go into the article it looks like it goes into compatibility mode with the black borders. I have compatibility mode unchecked and have rebooted quite awhile ago. I cleared the data and uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail.
I'm almost certain that prior to NF while I was just on a Rooted NC everything worked, NYTimes, Reader and so on.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
I have the same google reader issue and I'm running 0.6.6 on emmc.

What about for Chase Banking?

Interesting, when I tried Google Reader on Autonooted stock, I did not get any black borders. I wonder why the difference.

Different version?
I would love to get an answer on Google Reader app. It is one of my most used because of the instant syncing (I used to use FeedR).
I got a new NC with 1.1 out of the box and rooted, then installed it from the market. Its version 0.9.3.
I'm having this issue with Google Reader as well! When I autonootered, Reader worked fine and scaled to the whole screen. Now that I'm on Nookie Froyo...the initial screens are scaled perfectly, but when I go to read an article, I get huge black borders with the viewable area looking about the size of a small smartphone.
It's driving me nuts, because I really utilize google reader quite a bit!!
I hope someone looks at this soon its driving me nuts also... LoL
I am having the same problem with Google Reader running Phiremod (2.3).
I came across this thread which claims to have fixed the issue on the Folio. I tried flashing the zip on my Nook but it failed every time. The source is included in the thread, so maybe someone who knows this stuff better than I can figure out how to make this work on our nooks.

I found that the issue with Google Reader has to do with LCD density. I have Phiremod 5.3 and the default LCD density setting is 161. Changing it to 160 fixed the problem for me.
I found that I had to modify the build.prop file in order of this to stick.
Search the forums as there are lots of references on how to do this.

Problem with changing the LCD density is that the Market Downloaded apps list often goes blank. Keep the density at 161 and use the free D7 Google Reader client. It is quite nice.
I can confirm that the Google Reader issue is a density setting problem. I changed lcd density from 161 to 160 and it works fine now. This also did not break anything else, not that I have noticed yet anyways. I will post again if I find anything broken.
I used LCDDensity, came preinstalled on Phiremod v5.
--MrAnt--
Just discovered that changing the lcd density setting does indeed break Market. The list of My Apps is blank and I am unable to restore the list, clearing cache and data, unless I revert the density setting to 161.
I guess I have to choose between a working full-screen Reader app or the ability to update my apps
Hopefully there will be a fix for this. I really enjoy reading my news feeds on the Nook, much more pleasant than my phone and more convenient than a computer.
--MrAnt--
Have you tired turning off Compatibility mode in spare parts? It worked for me without having to mess with the density.

D7 is a full featured Google Reader client.
So I am probably one of the few that is running a completely stock unrooted nook I was playing around with the new update today and downloaded a handful of the free apps. I have several questions:
1) For some reason my Fliq Notes icon disappeared, I can still use the app perfectly fine, but it's showing a gray standard b&n icon, any way to fix this? I tried "archiving" it and installing again, no dice.
2) What is archiving anyway? I'm completely new to Android if that matters. Is it like uninstalling something in windows?
3) In the apps screen, what is that right most "refresh" looking button? Whenever I click it it just spins forever and never stops.
Overall I must say that the nook runs much smoother than it did with Android 2.1. PDFs seem to render faster, the web browser pinch to zoom is smoother as well. Flash is great!
I run a stock unrooted nook, except when I run off an SD card.
I have a similar issue with fliq calendar's icon. I have a suspicion, after reading some reviews on other sites, that this may be a fliq issue.
I agree that the whole experience is a lot smoother with the update.
For these old timers on BN1.3 rooted, what are the advantages/changes of 1.4.1 over 1.3 for NC (rooted of course)? Is browsing faster?
The advantages I see are more magazines and Netflix. Any biggies?
Thanks.

I only ran 1.3 stock for about 24 hours before I zapped it with CM, so I don't claim a lot of experience using it. However, I've since gone to B&N 1.4.1 rooted since December, and quite like it. Here's what I'm aware of:
Some enhanced magazines (e.g. Conde Nast pubs like Wired Magazine, New Yorker) require B&N 1.4.x. They won't run on older versions, nor older B&N versions. If you want one of these, this might be important.
The reader has been tweaked (or broken, depending on your view). Landscape mode works now, as does 2 column landscape. There are more font and style options, though still limited compared to other readers. I like it, though. Some folks are having problems with article pages being cut off and other complaints.
The 'n' key is now used to access the B&N shortcuts menu rather than the on-screen button at the bottom. This is reviled by a number of users, but I prefer it. The use of the hardware frees up some screen space I'd rather use for content. While the button will no doubt wear out someday, I don't expect to be using this device forever.
Whether or not these are biggies will depend on what's important for you. Overall, I much preferred 1.4.1 to older versions. I wouldn't bother if I couldn't root it, though.

You can use HomeCatcher to try to remap it to your preferred launcher. Or use Button Savior or similar, and map its home button to your launcher. Or use Folder Organizer to put a link to the app drawer in your notifications. Lots of things you can try. I've gone with that last option, since I rather like the B&N shortcut mapping for the hardware button.
Here's my two cents. 1.4.1 is a minor improvement over 1.3 as noted in the previous posts. There are two other improvement:
1. market seems to have better visibility - more apps than before
2. flash update looping is fixed.
I did do the upgrade and will stay with BN 1.4.1 The upgrade was rather painless thanks to GMPOWER.
The 1.4.1 stock ereader can read Nook Comics ~ that allows pinch to zoom and panning on comic/manga pages and supports comics paging left to right while manga page in their native right to left. The B&N Android app does not yet support Nook Comics (though they are putting a new version into beta testing, so perhaps that will change).
Except for comics available with GuidedView, convenient zooming is important for reading on a 7" screen (though I wish the zoom could lock on page turns).
After you root 1.4, update the kernel, then you can overclock it. I tried that the other day and it worked pretty well. In the end, I went back to my CM9 ROM. The only think I miss about the Nook stock software is the reader itself.
