I've been messing with my Captivate a lot for the past few weeks, rooted and flashed once I got sick of waiting for an update. I've tried most of the major roms out there and am having a great time learning about it all.
I have a problem and would appreciate some advice on the simplest way to solve it. Whenever I try to enter the image gallery, I get a black screen for a few seconds, then it vibrates a few times and kicks back to the home screen and gives me a failure notification. It does this regardless of what rom I'm running so I'm assuming it has something to do with the file structure on the card? If I data reset, will this fix it?
I looked around but didn't see an apparent answer for this specific issue. Thanks
Try this, download sgs tools from market. Goto uodate stock apps select gallery

Hmmm, I downloaded it and it doesn't seem to do that much. I don't see any options like that for sure. What is that program supposed to do?
After I posted I realized the app I referenced is not on the market.
Have you tried deleting app data
settings, applications, manage, all, gallery, delete data

This is the app I was talking about

wow, thanks! That did it. I just upgraded the stock app and it's fine now. This app looks really useful, what are some of its other uses?
Secret codes gets you into a bunch of useful things
like lbs test mode for gps
the updated gallery you installed is also supposed to help battery somehow.
I do not use it all too much though, but I keep it around

i recently noticed when i try to download any app from the android market or update an app it will act like its starting the download but then never actually start it. im running the latest cyanogen rom. i have tried wiping and reflashing the latest cyanogen rom and reflashing the google apps addon. i have tried restoring to a previous backup when the apps were working in the market. i have tried flashing a non cyanogen rom even. nothing i can think of (my thoughts are limited since im fairly new at all this) and still no success. i had the same problem on my g1 with cyanogen and i somehow managed to get that working again by trying similar things but no luck yet with my nexus one and its really upsetting me. any ideas on how i can go about fixing this? thanks for all your help

May sound stupid (and yes, it is) but try launching google talk. Often bby logging in to talk, market downnloads kick off. Seems to be google account related.

try going into settings, applications, market, and uninstall updates, then open the market again

OK I tried the uninstall updates idea and no luck there. Opening Google talk also didn't solve the problem. Any other ideas guys? Thanks
I wonder if you ever found a solution to this?
Well for me, I have to open GTalk and close it and reopen and close and reopen...it eventually works when it fully loads... Oddly, it seems to only happen on wifi. I'm pretty sure it's a GTalk issue.
Hopefully the new market system will make a difference...I really hope
How's the amount of space on your phone? Do you see the little hard drive icon? I know that the Market always starts to download stuff but never actually downloads anything when my phone space its low.
Hope this helps!

So after spending hours searching and getting no where fast I am turning to here for hopes of an answer. I am running Serendipity 4.0.1 with the JK4 modem. I have been trying to purchase apps from the Marketplace and I don't know why but, it will not let me buy anything. I have tried many many different things, flashing, clearing the cache, changing modems, going through third party apps and still no luck. I even used the ID changer script with no luck.
Anyone have any ideas at all as to what I can do to enable this feature again? I am still new to this so please take it easy with the abbreviations and terms as I am still learning as I go Thanks again!!
**Update** 1/20/11
Well after tinkering with different settings through the night and much frustration, I actually solved the problem on my own. I managed to locate and correct the server I was connecting to so it said North America. After that got the new app through SGS Tools and did a cache clear (again) and reset set the phone. Much to my surprise, it actually worked
Where did you change that because im having problems...

It sounds like he just used the Clear Market Cache option in SGS Tools.
Should Have been more detailed In my question Where do you change the server name Is what I should of asked. Sgs tools did not work for me.

And just like that its working again lol...
Yeah I finally got it working again through SGS Tools changing to the north america setting and that exactly what happened, It just started to work again.
ive read of people not being able to update or download google maps. my problem with it is almost every time i download an app from the market google maps downloads instead. or it tires to update. and the app i intended to download does nothing as if i never clicked on it to download in the first place and clicked google maps instead. its like maps just takes over and decides that its going to do what it wants. wtf is the deal?
are you on stock JF6 or what?
oh sorry. i guess some info wouldve helped. im running serendipity 6.4

hmmm.. i used to run that ROM and i had that problem on the first boot. after that however it went away after i just went to into the market and cancelled the download. As far as the apps not downloading after you press them, i feel like thats a market app issue.. have you tried reflashing to an earlier version of serendipity?
Im on 6.4 and have had no issues with the market or google maps. I have always flashed a freash nand if things start getting funky.

Ive been using serendipity since out was released. I noticed this happening a few versions back. Maybe since around 6.0. this my second flash of 6.4 cuz I had a brief stint with another rom and had the same issue there.

The map problem is related to GB ROMs.
The last update on the market for google map will make it take control and restart on its own.
Even if you close it in your running services, it will actually prompt restart before closing = never closes and drains your battery.

For me it says free when I go to myapps in market. Once installed it is fine.
For me, in my apps it says installed.and that's it.it will still hijack my other app downloads and download itself again..

I completely removed it. And my massive power drain stopped at the same time??
On gr-12, previously serendipity 6.4 no problems with both

Buh-bye maps, you will not be missed.
Hello free ram and much better battery life.
Autostars app should take care of the problem of Maps restarting at will.
Google Maps
FYI: Turning off "Use Wireless Networks" in the Location and Security setting appears to keep MAPS from loading in the background, thereby saving some battery. Keeps you from completely deleting the app.
My two cents.
I did some searching on this issue but the only thread I found was from 2010 and we've come a ways since then. My issue is, randomly when I try and access my gallery I will get a black screen while my buttons remain lit. I have to hit the home button in order to do anything and then need to kill the gallery from running in order to get back into it. Has anyone else seen this or know how to fix it?
I'm runniny Serendipity VII build 2 kernel 4.

I haven't had this issues, but here are a couple of things I can think of:
1. Did you try installing a different gallery over it? (Using SGS tools)
2. How many pictures do you have? I could see a lot of folders/pics tripping it up.
3. Have you tried clearing the data from the app? (Through settings)

I haven't installed another gallery because I like the default one and haven't had any problems with it until recently. I've got a few hundred pictures but about 7gigs of anime that I can't keep from showing up each time. I checked the application settings but there isn't anything you can clear.

Try this: look around in your filesystem for a file called .nomedia, and put a copy of that in the folder/folders you have your anime images in. They won't show up in gallery, but you'll still be able to get to them.
Hey guys,
I was wondering if there is an app out there that will allow me to stop other apps from starting up?
I've tried Titanium Backup's freeze option, it would completely remove the app from app drawer.
I was looking for something that we prevent it from starting until I.decided the run it the first time. For example, I would like Google map to not startup upon boot, but would still like to start it up if I need to use it. I don't use Maps often, but when it starts on boot, Places, Latitude and Navigation start up too.
Any ideas?

I think it's called "Autostarts" in the market, good luck!

I'll give it a whirl! Thanks man!
I use startup manager, but I guess they are the same. Must have app imo
I tried Autostarts, and it works really well! Its got quite a bit of options to manipulate. A lot more than I, personally would need.
I'll check out the other app for sure! Thanks!
