I rooted my samsung captivate and installed the custom rom ginger clone. It wasn't increadably stable but it was ok. I wanted to try axura because apperantly it was very good, so i tried to use the odin 1-click thing and it seemed to work but then when it booted up it would get to the "AT&T world phone" thing and then it would go to a black screen for about 5 seconds then back to the world phone screen for about 20 min (actually the first time it turned on all the way was in the middle of class and I almost got it taken away) but it would eventually turn on. I have tried to get it into recovery/download mode but it won't work. I would like to know how to get my phone back to normal. Also when I go to update on settings or on kies mini it tells me i can and will let me download should i try this. Also I really don't want to try the usb jig if possible.

what batch phone do you have? (look under battery on back of phone). Mine is 1006 and I believe any made with 1009 (possibly 1010) or later won't be able to "one-click" back to JF6 and have to go back to JH7 instead. if you have one that can't go back to JF6 and tried to flash JF6, it's my understanding that there isn't a fix without the USB JIG... and having the JIG is always a safe bet/good idea.
also: wrong section, Q&A next time
If your phone is batch 1008 through 1010, Odin one-click will not work properly. Download Odin v1.7 and flash JH3 or later.
Update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10309886&postcount=1469
I made a USB jig without even cutting any cables. Just some resistors and tape (and a steady hand).
What about the samsung update should i do that?

Not true, I have a 1010 and can one click back to 6 no problem, I just have to make sure I have an update.zip around and the 3 button fix. OP I think your best bet is to take out your battery leave it sit for about 5 minutes, startup one click on your computer, put battery back in phone and hold volume up & down while putting in the usb to your phone. Flash back to stock and profit!
Works for me every time.

Same here...I had a factory new 1009..and had no issues...However...I am wondering if many who are having this using 1008..1009...1010 builds up..are having their problem with factory refurbs..or new phones..? Is Samsung doing something to the refurbs that is causing this issue ?

I have two phones from batch 1010...For one of them the 1-click works every time for the other I needed to use a Jig and JH3 + Odin 1.7 to get back in.

Whoever said it doesn't work is wrong. It works, but the one-click most people are using disables the button combo on all but early 1008 and older phones. There are flash packages which don't disable the buttons on any phones. If you must flash to stock (because you are selling or returning the phone or if some OTA update you want come out) just try to use the one with the fixed sbl.bin so you don't lose your button combos. If you just want to flash the latest perception or whatever then don't bother flashing to stock.

I'm pretty sure it just doesn't work...I tried to install JF6 with Odin 1.7 plus the 3 button fix and even that didn't work...I tried everything. The only ROM that took on my phone was JH3. Nothing else would work period...The jig was also necessary to get back into download mode...I almost got in with another ROM but eventually that also had a kernel panic as well. I probably should have posted a guide to what I did sooner but I didn't understand why my other 1010 phone didn't have this problem...now there is a guide already written to what I did...Although it is stated as using JH2 although I use JH3. I at least posted what I did on the 1-click forum in early december when I encountered this problem. I'm just glad the custom roms install ok over JH3 at least for now.

Not true. About half of those who try it (including me) absolutely cannot flash anything pre-JH3 without using the special JH2 to JF7 method I linked. It seems odd, because I am on a brand new batch 1010 phone, and my friend who got his phone a bit before me (also batch 1010) has no problems plugging it into my computer and using Odin one-click. It has nothing to do with the button combo problem.

On my 1009 build..I had the 3 button on eclair..and on any rom I flashed..and I had used the JH6 odin to stock with out issue about 12 times..I tried it 1 time with my new 1012 build with out issue..but..I don't want to press my luck any further...I want to find out if doing this is even needed since I have my Nand of the original rooted stock JH7...
I see no need to even do a nand of the original rooted stock rom as what has been suggested just about everywhere as the first thing to be done on a new phone..if this won't allow me to return to stock in the first place..I mean what would be the point of just taking up space on your phone if it doesn't work ? If it doesn't work...then it shouldn't be recommended to do it...If it does work..then it really should be almost mandated as a precautionary DO THIS FIRST on every Rom on here for those who have the 1008 builds and up...shouldn't it ? If it does work...it sure will save folks a lot of grief and heads aches...and a lot of extra work...

I cracked the screen on my last captivate, which had no problems getting into download mode. This phone will not go into download mode. I've tried all button combos, with all the same results. Either looping ATT logo, or the battery charge icon comes up.
Am I SOL? I'm hoping there's a fix for this, either now or coming out in the future. Im the meantime, should i be careful with my phone? I was planning on going from cognition 2.1.4 to 2.2 beta 5.5. Im a little nervous though, knowing i might brick my phone for good.
someone, please tell me there's a fix!!!
My first captivate had this problem.. I had to send it back to get a new one.
I am also interested in what the story is with phones with no 3 button recovery and no USB download modes.
I recently purchased one that has the defect. CAL Date is 17th August.
Currently debating if I should send it back for a refund or not. (I am in Australia, and the retailer has informed me that all new phones now have this defect due to it being a deliberate disabling by Samsung. So getting a working replacement from them is out of the question.
Does anyone have a newer Captivate than mine that had USB download mode and 3BR working out of the box?
I am guessing the odds of me finding one of the pre August models with 3BR and USB working are pretty low.
Will there ever be a permanent fix for this? (Not OTA update, not much good for people who are not on the AT&T network)
FYI, I bought my phone about a week or two ago via amazon wireless and it was a 7.11.2010 model.
It's a hardware issue. So if it's driving you crazy then try to exchange it, but the leaked froyo one-click odin patched it for me.

yes, yes, and yes
you could see if "adb reboot download" will get it into download mode.
Similar to the other poster, I've also heard that upgrading to 2.2 fixed the "no 3-button download mode" issue. Several people reported it.

The odin version for sure. I don't know about the clockwork version.
I upgraded to cog 5.5 via ROM manager. I still can't get into download mode. Will it make any difference if i flash with odin? And how do i flash with Odin if i can't get into download mode?
If theres no way i could do this on my phone, is it really worth returning/trying to get a different one? If im just extra careful when i change roms, what are the chances of bricking my phone? Would there be any way to fix it after this happens?
My one and only Cappy could never get into dload or recovery mode at all. Rather than return it, I have found workarounds, but they are definitely risky!!
HOWEVER, tonight I have some interesting news... I have found a way to get into recovery mode like this:
1. Start from phone off, then press power+volume up + volume down, and hold.
2. Wait until the 4th AT&T screen comes on, then release the VOLUME buttons, but still hold power.
3. The phone should go into recovery mode.
I tested this several times and it worked every time!
Now I know this is not download mode, but it is a start for those of us who have trouble (or no) 3 button recovery. My point is, maybe there is a different "combo" that will work.... I'm just saying.
You should be able to get into recovery by simply holding vol up vol down and power until att splash screen comes up first time...
As for not getting into download mode using vol buttons and plugging in usb, ie having to use adb, flashing roms is risky as you may not be able to Odin back to a working phone if something hapoens

Yes I (and many others) know that vol up+voldn+pwr SHould work, but it doesn't for some of us. I just tried again to be sure.
Yes I know the workarounds are risky, read my post.
I was just saying that if I have found a way to get into recovery with an alternate method of the 3 button deal, then maybe there is an alternate method to get into download mode too.

Use adb to reboot into download or recovery. If you are rooted you can just type 'reboot download' into a terminal as well.
ROM manager flashes will not fix the 3br as they do not flash any bootloader blocks.(at least in the current releases)
Does the Odin Cog5.5 restore 3br or just the leaked Froyo?
i just bought my cappy a week back....i just rooted it....the 3 button combo is working for me....if u want i can write down any version or manufactoruing date u want to know....just tell me how to(im a noob)
Cog 5.5 didn't fix the 3 button problem for me.
My 3 button access was fixed when I went back to stock 2.1 via 1click odin and then requested the ATT OTA upgrade. It said failure, but my 3 button access worked after that.
After that I used Rom Manager to flash Cog 2.2(don't remember which beta)... lost 3 button access... not sure why. Most threads I've seen on that topic say it shouldn't do that, but it did.
So went back, redid it all, then flashed Cog 5.5 via Odin3... working like a champ now. Easy 3 button recovery and download where I had nada before.

I fought with mine all day yesterday trying every trick I found on the net. I finally just downloaded the SDK and did the "adb reboot download" thing and whammo...fixed.
Okay so, I used the Odin JI6 Froyo flash and everything went peachy. Also installed the OCLF and the Voodoo one from off the market.
Problem is that the root wasn't total/complete and the update.zip was replaced but could not be used in full rooting or something along those lines (I'm not certain).
Anyhow, the phone worked great for the last three days, then this evening the browser wasn't refreshing facebook so I restarted the phone. After the AT&T logo it went blank and it vibrated like a beating heart constantly before restarting again after about 5 minutes, which then made it beat like a heart again etc.
I tried going to the boot screen/safe mode and reinstalling the update.zip (which didn't work because of the failed root), tried clearing my data cache, and then also i formatted the sd card. Nothing.
After that I tried putting it into download mode and flashing Odin, which didn't work. It said it was sending the PIT files but stalled there and never changed. I tried a master clear and it didn't go anywhere either.
Any advice?
You should've read the forums more before flashing and saved yourself this headache. You will need this to flash back to stock.

Dowload Odin and the drivers on the first page of the thread. Install the drivers. Run Odin as Administrator. You need to then remove your SIM, battery and external sd card if you have one. Hopefully your button combo will work to get you into download mode. Next, put battery back in, hold the vol + & - buttons and plug in your USB from pc to phone and do not let go of the volume buttons, do not touch power and you should then enter download mode. Yellow screen with android shovelling. Odin should see your phone, push start on Odin and let Odin do it's thing. When Odin finished and your phone reboots you will be back on stock JF6. While your phone is powered on and on your homescreen master clear with Odin.
You need to read a bit before flashing anything again. One Click Root doesn't work with Froyo, neither does Voodoo. Had you taken some time and read you would know this.
Good Luck, I hope this helps.

I feel your pain. Been there, done that. Although your process of bricking reminds me of a more sophisticated approach....lol....mine was out of total complete noobness.
Question:
1) Can you manually boot into download/ recovery manually using 3-button combo? If so you have hope (meaning your phone is basically "un-brickable").
-Bet that made you feel better huh?
-If you can't use 3-button to go into either modes, then you are in the same boat as i was. Hope you are still within your 30 days, or at least warranty. One way to tell if you can/ can't go into either modes is to check your "Batch #."
a) remove battery
b) look below your Serial Number
c) if your Batch # = 1007 = You are safe
d) Batch # = 1008 = good luck
2) When you say Brick, do you have the unfortunate "Phone (!) PC" screen? If yes, then its a "soft brick." If No, then its a "hard brick." I would start to worry.
3) According to your post, it sounds like you have the Regular Odin and NOT the One click version, correct? If you have regular Odin, i would at least try the One click. Regardless, both versions should be able to get you back to stock (JF6), but we already know how well your current version Odin has gotten you.
If you need help, there are TONS more knowledgeable people here in the Captivate forum than I. They should be able to help.
Good Luck!
1. Yes I can go into download and recovery mode. I've attempted to reinstall the 2.2 off odin but it doesn't take. It is the One Click Odin Froyo, it does not work. The Comm screen is yellow, and the logs just say it's loading the PIT and doesnt ever change from there.
2. I have seen that phone ! computer screen, but I'm not stuck at it. When that came on I held the vilume buttons and the power button and it went back to regular boot up (which obviously still doesn't work).
3. It is the one click. I'm not smart enough to use something that involves more than one click.
Stop trying to flash Froyo. Flash back to stock then master clear. Then go read the threads in the development section of the forum before flashing anything. The fact that you tried to apply Voodoo to Froyo and you tried to use one click lagfix on Froyo shows you haven't read and don't know what your doing. You corrupted something by flashing incompatable stuff, flash back to stock and master clear for now. Read a bit and then flash Froyo.

LOL . I as well. I know enough to be dangerous.
Now, on to business. If you actually read what Rhiannon has posted for you, and click on the actual link itself, you will realize that the version of Odin you are using (yes the one click) is NOT the correct version for flashing back to stock (JF6/ Eclair.....NOT froyo). Remember, if all else fails....."The One must return to the Source...." <-----Plus 9,000 to whoever can guess where thats from.
Obviously your phone falls within the 1007 since you have the Luxury/ Advantage of manually entering Download/ Recovery mode....i wish i did.

Thanks Spartan, I'm guesing too much skimming and not enough reading.
OP when someone says flash back to stock they don't mean Froyo. I don't mean to sound harsh, really I want to help you, but you have to read and follow instructions when you ask for help or it becomes frustrating to all that try to help you. If you want to get out of the mess you are in read my original post and use the Odin thread I linked for you please.

I see you are still on Cog 2.2 B5......dont care for 8 or any of the new ones? Or Sheps? What's your story?
Mine is simple....Patience. lol
I am on Cog beta 5.5 with 2e recovery kernel, I swapped the kernel myself before DG updated. It has working GPS and it is pretty zippy, I am not noticing lag. I was going to flash beta 8 last night but there were some modem issues and people losing 3g. Then 8.1 came out and I read the changelog and it isn't much different from my setup. I didn't go to beta 7 because Tw Launcher was removed and you need that for Kies to see your phone so that's a no go. Shep is using an I9000 kernel and I don't want to mess with I9000. I liike to flash my phone but I need to use it as a phone. I have tried some ROMS that I didn't think worked as well so I stick with what has worked best for me. I have all the mods on it, stock lock screen, battery circle mod, and gps works. I may try AOSP this weekend but I work all week not at a computer and I can't just flash all day. I find that things can go wrong and it takes time to reconfigure apps and contacts and if anything goes wrong it sould take a while to fix and I haven't had time to mess with it this week. I see you are still on 2.1, that is patience. I tried out Froyo and when gps worked for the first time ever since having the phone I'm sticking with Froyo. I am waiting for Voodoo to make ot to 2.2 then it will be perfect.
Also, I forget to edit my signature if i only try something for a day or two. I was on Froyo for a few before i remembered to change my sig.

It's all good. I was just curious, that's all. As far as the 19000, that makes two of us. I tried it, hoping that the voodoo + OCLF combo would work.......WRONG! lol
When 7 came out and i too noticed the TW removed, i thought Everyone would take a plunge into that, since many have complained that TW i/o was just unbearable. Oh well. As far as everything else you mentioned, i feel the same way.

I know you were curious, I figured I would just tell you my story. I froze Tw Launcher with TIBU for now, I've used Launcher Pro for months and didn't wanmt a second running in the backround, i will unfreeze it when I need it. Yeah, I try stuff anf when it doesn't work the way I need i go back to what works. I started it. No worries. I too would love to have voodoo. So far, with stock OS, ext2 + OCLF seems to work for me....for now. Keep in mind that i too would like to have the functionality of a Phone. That was my intention in the first place...lol.
So after figuring out what was wrong after making this thread:

I got my Captivate back to stock using this method. Unfortunatly this removed my root and all that good stuff and now im back to bone stock AT&T.
Before i had a Rogers version of the stock firmware which was the easiest thing in the world to root and download 3rd party apps (like the Slideme market). Now for some reason this at&t firmware that i got from the link above is being difficult. I CAN'T get into download mode (using volume up + down with usb), I CAN'T get into recovery (using 3 button combo) so i'm kind of stuck here. I want to go back to cm7 so i can enable 3rd party apps and use what ive been using for the past month (even though ive had problems with it i much prefer it to stock).
Where do i start? I just figured out how to download 3rd party apps using the sideload method but that is quite time consuming compared to what im use to (just download straight from the browser or using QR codes, etc.)

The issue i have with this is that my phone wont go into download mode. It will just bring up the charging logo (using the volume up + down + usb method). The weird thing is, i use to be able to get into dowload mode but now i cant since i flashed it "back to stock" AT&T. I use to have rogers firmware.
Update: I just got the phone rooted. For some reason it just decided to root. Before it kept failing.
Have you tried a jig to get you into download mode? MobileTechVideos.com has jigs for sale with free shipping, I picked one up from there for $8, it arrived within 3 days. Once you get into download mode, here is the link for Canadian stock, it's using Heimdall not Odin.

Yea i figured out how to get into download mode via SDK tools but now im in a bigger mess than before... I think i may have bricked it. When i turn it on it goes to a screen that shows a phone .. caution .. computer.
Is it bricked? Should i buy a jig then flash back to stock? It happened when i tried to load a speedmod recovery onto the phone and odin3 froze then i unplugged the phone. Any ideas?
That's not a brick. Get back into download mode. Flash back to stock and make sure your cable is connected properly so you don’t have the same thing happen. I would suggest flashing one of the many custom Roms they will all give you root. I have had that screen before, as long as your phone shows anything means it's not bricked.

Without button combos, try this; remove battery, SIM card and external sd card, if you use one, replace battery and battery cover, run Odin as administrator, press and hold volume up and down at the same time and do not let go, do not touch the power button, now plug the usb cable from your pc to your phone, within seconds you should be in download mode and Odin should see your device. Also, I have successfully flashed with Odin from the phone + pc screen you are seeing. If neither method works you need a jig.
Warning; if you updated your bootloaders to GB do not under any circumstances flash the three button fix or you will definately hard brick your phone.

i have tried all these methods, including a jig, but i cant get a computer to recognize that there is even a device attached, much less odin or anything else to recognize. (keis fails too). What now?
UPDATED!!
I had forgotten about posting here, and my problem has been resolved. So here it is... I tried everything that I could find within this forum, almost. I built my own jig with inferior radio shack components that would not activate download mode, though it would turn the phone on. I got wise, spent 8 dollars at ebay and purchased a JIG there. Instant download mode after 3 days (shipping). Reflashed with one click, updated w/ kies, made kernal changes and am now rockin my captivate. Thanks to those who assisted.
Hello astute folks on XDA!! My name is Brian and i'm a flash-a-holic. I'd like to share with you my experience that ultimately lead to me fubaring my beloved captivate.
I've flashed everything under the sun on this phone from roms to different kernels to modems. You name it, i flashed it with great success (after researching, never flashed on a whim.) UNTIL... Yesterday.. lol.. I was running a leaked 2.3.4 gingerbread rom and i noticed the problem first starting while trying to connect my phone to my computer via usb. The two didn't communicate when for the last 6 months, every single time i plugged in, my computer and phone recognized each other every single time. So that was my first clue that something aint right. Next thing i did was power the phone off. Went to turn it back on and NOOOOPPPEEEEE!!! Nothing!!!!! Held all three buttons and the little grey circular icon came on (the one that is initially in the battery icon when the phone is powered off but it's plugged in) but immediately shut off. Nothing turned my phone back on, but i was able to get into download mode. So thats what i did. I used odin3 oneclick to go back to stock eclair thinking that that will start everything all over, erase the bad/corrupt files and so forth. Flash was successful. Got back to stock eclair and got stuck in MTP initialization (you know, the screen in which you get if your debugging mode wasn't checked.) But it hung on that screen. No buttons would allow my to exit so, I pulled the battery. Then, the same damn thing.. I could NOT get the phone to power back on. Lesson learned for me. (today i learned that going back to stock is NOT a fresh install.) Used odin again, but this time unplugged my cord BEFORE i got to the eclair boot screen. As i'm peering at this home screen, i noticed that my USB connecting notification was flashing on, off, on, off yet my cord was unplugged. At this point i called tech AT&T tech support because i knew i was screwed. (i told them i tried to update to the 2.2 they provided on website and the phone cut out, lol).. I spent an hour on the phone and got no where other than determining that my phone is farked and they are gonna send me out a replacement (which will take 4 to 6 days) because luckily it was under warranty still. Tech support couldn't get my phone to turn on, but i could, lmao.. So... here i am stuck with a phone where usb debugging mode is buggin out!!!!!!! To wrap this story up, what i did was got back into download mode and flashed gingerbread bootloaders and a kernel and voila!! So long as i don't turn my phone off, i have a fully operational phone until my new cappy arrives in the mail in 4-6 days. (Dicks.. If i had been ordering a new phone, i'd have the option for next day shipping but thats another story.)
TLDR: Flashing too much will get you in a bad situation. Stick with a rom/modem/kernel setup that suits your needs because your next flash could be your last depending on the components in your phone.
EDIT: MAKE IT KNOWN THAT I HOLD NO ONE RESPONSIBLE OTHER THAN MYSELF FOR THE FUBARING OF MY CAPPY!!!!!!!!!!

That's a common hardware issue with the captivate. Happened to me twice. Its just the USB port spassing out thinking tthe cable is constantly getting plugged in and unplugged and freezing tthe phone with its craziness. Both times it was replaced under warranty. I'm paranoid it'll happen again now that I'm out of warranty.

i have flashed all froyo based roms on my cappy !
Can anyone confirm that excessive flashing may risk my phone?
Doubtful that excessive flashing had anything to do with this. Just be sure to do all necessary wipes and take all the required steps before you flash a rom and you SHOULD be okay. You are always taking a risk when you flash your phone regardless of how many times it has a positive outcome.

I'm 99% sure my board failed because of cheap, unreliable components. However, that 1% is still in the back of my mind that it could have been from something I flashed. I suppose I'll never know.

It is hard to tell from what you say that it was purely hardware. Definitely sounds like the issue locked up the phone more then it did mine the two times I experienced it but it definitely wasn't performance friendly to me either. It seemed to settle down for,me intermittently then act up again. I never lived with it for too long since there's a warranty center i can do a walk in exchange at less than a mile from my house.
PS. I would flash stock jf6 then update via kies if possible before you send iit in to avoid being charged $500 for voiding the warranty. If kies wont work flash jf6 and find the jh7_ota.zip file floating around the forums to flash stock jh7 In cwm then remove cwm. There is a zip file that restores stock recover. I can provide these files if you can't find them not sure if they still have active dl links.

As I started before, the phone is fully functional with gingerbread other than the occasional usb flickering..Only problem I have with it really is if I turn the phone off, it won't turn back on unless I hold power and volume up, enter cwm and then select reboot now.
Before I send it back, I'll odin back to jf6 first with oneclick. Without cwm on the phone, lol, it absolutely won't turn on by just using the power button. I made sure of this before I even called the warranty department and explained my dilemma
The nice thing is that I can use the phone while I wait fire the new one to arrive AND I can flash and experiment with everything now without worries!!!

I am also a flash-o-holic and I think that if you flash with odin lots with repartition checked or are enabling/disabling voodoo lots, it can mess up your phone. Has happened to me twice, just sent my phone today for the second time. Both times this happened to me it happened when successfully flashing back to stock with 512.pit and repartition checked. On boot up it stalls at the "S" screen and never goes past it and in recovery I get some errors like:
error: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
error: can't mount sdcard
I flashed many different firmwares with different pit files and different android versions but all conclude the same, stuck at the "S" boot screen.
I have determined that the partition tables were messed up and I tried to fix it by putting parted on my phone and trying to repartition it from the shell. Both times I get the "unable to write to /dev/block/mmcblk0 - I/O error!" Also, from CWM Recovery I try repartition sdcard but it also comes up with an error. The last time I sent it into Samsung repair they had to replace the main board to get it working properly again. Think it is definitely a good idea to find a rom / kernel / modem you are happy with and stick with it for a while.
So I can't even describe how many things I frigged up here. This is the basic way it all went down: I went to replace my boot image using a method I found from the guy that does the Mobile Tech Videos. His batch file pushed some stuff (I think it made changes to the file system?) and unfortunately I kept getting the garbage screen on startup instead of my logo. I was still able to boot into Fasty III v1.3 though.
I went looking for an alternate method and found one that dated back to January 2011. It involved a different push to the filesystem (I think) and a .PIT file. Well, then the phone soft-bricked. I was still able to get into download mode, so I flashed I896UXKH2-HOMEBINARY.tar.md5 which, if I recall, is the stock Rogers Gingerbread update. Now I'm stuck boot-looping between the Rogers splash screen and the Galaxy S animation. I'm not sure if it's because there are just way too many things going on in terms of bootloaders, kernels, file system changes and ROMs. Volume UP + Home + Power doesn't seem to get me into recovery mode, although I may be able to do that using adb... not sure. I had Boogs kernel on there, and Fasty III. Did they get wiped when I applied the KH2 tar?
I'm basically looking for the proper method to get this thing back to stock 2.3.3 so I can learn from my mistakes and, more importantly, get my phone working.
Heading to dinner, I'm hoping someone can link me to a guide so I can tackle this when I get back. If you have any questions about any more specifics I will try and answer when I get back home.
Thanks in advance!
So I've found a post on XDA for the Odin Master Wipe (One-Click)... I'd rather not lose my internal SD storage, does anyone know if there is a slightly more complex route to take that would restore all of the stock bootloaders, kernels and ROM?
I am going to say you might have messed up your Partition. You need to find what ever is a "stock" PIT for your phone. I can assume the I897's should work but I don't know. That garbage screen in the beginning seems like either the image was corrupted or you messed up on the process. Either way I would recommend either a 1 click to JF6 (if your phone like those) or use that same KH2.tar with a suitable PIT assuming KH2 is froyo or eclair. If that KH2 is GB try a froyo first, fix your phone then worry about GB. I use a i897 so I could be way off on this.

The I897 and I896 are, as far as I am aware, virtually identical. I'll try to find a stock partition file for Gingerbread I896/7. Well, I'm boned. I flashed the PIT file and then the device wouldn't even power on. So I finally frigged my way into download mode again and now I'm trying to apply the Odin One-Click program with the Master Wipe. Any other suggestions would be grand.
And now, it seems that Odin One-Click is hanging at the Set PIT file... command. It's been at least 10 minutes. This phone is still capable of download mode, I must be able to restore it!
Dammit.
Right click the Odin and run as administrator first then connect in download mode. Be sure to hook up your usb end to the back of the computer or if laptop- to the first port. And you may need to reboot your computer just cause.
^ What he said. DO NOT try restoring partitions with a package with bootloaders, reduce risk to hard brick

Any attempt to get into recovery or download now has left me with
RST_STAT = 0x1
PWIC = 0x3c
...
etc. I'm sure this is a screen that is not a good sign.
What about pulling battery and then trying to get into download mode.
If that does not work, then u need a Jig.
Don't worry, I have seen that screen or one similar on my phone as well. But a jig got me into download.
Will ur phone power on at all ?
Well, six lines of red hex status codes. This can't be good.
At this point I can't seem to get it to do anything but the six lines of code. That seems to pop up with the typical recovery combo. I don't have a jig, not exactly sure what that is but at this point I'm looking for any suggestions to get me into Download mode. Pull battery, sim, leave them in, whatever might help. This is the most boned I've ever been with an Android phone and unfortunately I need to rely on your experiences in the matter because I am not ready to give up on this phone. It's still a challenge and I love that, but this is also my primary mode of communication and I am the primary contact for my band.
This post will show you how to make a Jig... [HOWTO] *Layman's iGo Jig* [Solderless]
Thankfully, I just got 'er back into download mode... I'll let you know.

Odin One-Click just seems to hang now...It's now sitting at File Analysis. I am happy that Download Mode is still available, but I'm really unsure of what to do. I'm on a laptop, Dell StudioXPS laptop with Vista 32-bit, I ran ODIN3Excution v1.00 as administrator but I'm still getting nothing. I also moved the cable to the USB port closest to me.
True but those $30-$40 + shipping can reach close to $100 on my end, dont know for someone in Canada.
Do you have spare cable? Wich ODIN 1 click you using ?

Yeah, I have a spare cable. I don't think there is anything wrong with the cable, I think my tinkering has progressively made the situation worse. I am not going to spend money on this, there IS a process I can follow I'm sure. I HAVE Download mode capability, and a working computer. The Odin One-Click I'm using is showing Odin2Excution v1.00 in the title bar.
What did I do? **** up the partition table? So the bootloader doesn't know where to find the ROM? How can I undo this mess simply?
What I find most ironic is that I've successfully flashed kernels and roms to the phone, but the minute that I go and try to change the boot image, I friggin' brick the phone.
Go to dev section on one of the stikies and download Cezar's bootloaderless JF6 and give it a go.
