Mk how exactly do I use terminal emulator to flash sry never used it before and still learning this stuff
Sent from my Hero running GB aosp 0.1.6
Ok no problem just open up terminal emulator. First type su and enter. Next you type this flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-heroc.img then enter. BEFORE YOU DO ANY OF THIS MAKE SURE YOUR RECOVERY IS ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SDCARD.

Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
hmm
I seem to be having a problem. Terminal emulator simply says that it cannot find the recovery image. the image is on the root of my sd card. Do I need to already have android 2.3 to be able to do this? or can I just go from android 2.2 (CM 6.1)?
The img file is not just 3.0.0.5-heroc.img or whatever, it includes a string of numbers and dates tacked on to the end. Try using a file manager to rename it and then try again with Terminal Emulator.

From what I can tell, it is a customized version with less functionality than the official version.
I've been wrong before.

I've never heard of this bug nor had any problems with MMS
If you're having problems with mms try clearing out the telephony database
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
rm /data/data/com.*.*.telephony/databases/telephony.db
adb reboot
Can u give me a little step by step please? I really just know the basics on this phone thanks

Acutally seeing as the majority of rooted people probably just use the 'one click' apps it'd be easier to do this via Terminal Emulator.
Download Termial Emulator if you don't already have it on your phone
Open up terminal emulator
Then type out the following code box (at the end of each line you press 'Enter')
Code:
su
rm /data/data/com.*.*.telephony/databases/telephony.db
reboot

The location should exist...unless it was typed incorrectly or you have an incomplete flash /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/ should definitely be there.
If you have root explorer or estrongs files explorer with root access you can navigate to that location and delete using those apps too. Rebooting will rebuild the telephony.db file after its deleted.
If you still are having problems trying to find the database file send me a PM and I'll help you out when I can on gtalk.
Edit: Do this, open up terminal emulator and enter these lines in
Code:
su
cd /data/data/com.*.*.telephony/databases
ls
You should get a return line saying
Code:
mmssms.db telephony.db
And then reboot phone?

If you're referring to my previous post where you navigate to the directory and enter "ls" to list the files in that directory, then no. Thats just to see if the files are indeed there.
If they are, then you should do that "rm" command I posted before where you delete the telephony.db
If they both weren't there, even after a reboot, then as I said before - either the command wasn't typed in correctly, or the flash was incomplete.
Post what the 'ls' command returned to you after entering it in (ie. mmssms.db and/or telephony.db)
Its telling me not found after I enter "telephony databases"
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Well I got that command to work that deletes the telephony DB but I still cant download certain mms it says download was unsuccessful

Am I the only 1 who can't download mms on this phone?

Certain mms types will not work unless you're on a stock based rom. I believe it is the slideshows that are the problem.

Hey guys I'm very new to all this, I just used the z4root (Permenent root) method on my g1 dream and I would like to try a new rom on it but for some reason rom manager will not flash clockwork mod recovery or amon on it, it keeps saying that an error has occured when trying to access special privileges or something like that. does is matter if I'm using the free version or not? and do I need to put a custome hboot or bootloader on the phone as well? I've been reading for the last two days through these forums and I'm really lost and confused on how to do this. I understand that I must flash the rom from the custom recovery but can I get to the recovery through the hboot/bootloader once the custom recovery is flashed? Please help anyone. I appreciate it.
Never used z4 so cant really help there but i do know that you need a custom recovery to flash anything. So the question is can you get a recovery flashed. Can you boot into the os and log in? if so maybe you can get a terminal from the market and flash amonra from there with the instructions in his op. Not sure but worth a try.
z4root dont work proplerly try unviersal androot
Cool, hey johnson8 I really appreciate your help...so you're saying that the z4root has something to do with my phone not being able to download three recovery?

This is the guide you need to set up adb on your computer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
If you have any questions i will try to help. After this is done you should be set up to run adb and fastboot commands from your pc.
Do everything in this guide except the recovery image. You will be doing that via ezterry's thread with amonra recovery. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck
Ok will do..I appreciate all your help and have a safe trip..

Just follow instructions exactly and don't freak out and pull your battery during any of the process even if it looks hung. Good luck

Hi guys I got moto milestone running 2.1 any ideas on how to get custom ROM on the phone and whenever I check my software update on my phone out says ' unable to connect to the server ' , tired of seeing this pop up everytime . PLZ help
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
If you want to upgrade to stock 2.2.1, you can flash them using rsdlite. List of stock 2.2.1 rom's is available below.
http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone221
You can also use Motorola software update to upgrade.
For custom roms, you will need to flash VR first and then use AOR to flash the rom.

You have to press Volume Up and then the camera button
... or the other way around
Then you'll get a menu, use the volume buttons to select "Apply update.zip"
But this will only work if you've already copied the AOR update.zip to your SD card.
Which is available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796679
And here's a tutorial i used on my Milestone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698059

They have to be on your SD Card, but not in an folder. So when you plug the card into the computer, you copy AOR to "Removable Disk" (the one that is your SD card) and that's it.

Of course. Rooting is the first step to make any modifications to your phone. What stock version are you currently on?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
I can't say you need to be rooted, but it is needed for certain backup utilities like Titanium Backup. Otherwise, all you need is CWM
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
I suppose I misspoke. Root is not required, but is greatly helpful, and I'd suggest obtaining it first.
Sent from my glitched ICS Captivate using XDA App
I would say , root is highly recommended. But I think I seen a tutorial somewhere about flashing clockworkmod recovery on a stock unrooted captivate, or flashing a modded 3e Recovery to flash unsigned zip packages. I will try to find the link for you. But to backup all your apps and data, you will need root.

There are methods to root gingerbread, but they tend to be more involved then earlier versions of android. I correct my earlier statement that root is necessary. I'd highly suggest it if you want to back up apps etc, but it isn't required. I'd suggest downgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 and use the superoneclick utility. Supposedly this tool works on gingerbread but I haven't had any luck with it.
Sent from my glitched ICS Captivate using XDA App
The easiest way is probably to flash Corn kernel, because you get the option to root in CWM. And you will have corn kernel, so it will also be easy to flash from there
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
If you want to flash a custom roms, flash back to stock, then flash a custom kernel via Odin, reboot to system, put the rom on root of sd card, reboot to cwm, do a nandroid backup, wipe data/factory reset, then flash zip from sd card. That's the basic of flashing. Search around in the captivate section and you will find your answers. There are so many topics about flashing roms. Most of the time the rom dev, posts detailed instructions on flashing his/hers rom from start to finish.
Almost every custom rom comes pre-rooted. No need to root once you flash the custom rom.
Also, if you want to save your contacts, you should do so before you flash back to stock, or before you flash the custom rom. If you want to backup all of your apps, then you will need to be rooted, and have titanium backup installed from the market.
